TIME: 6PM

Sunset. Usually a time of contemplation, a time where most finished work and went home to spend time with their loved ones. Well. Most people. Shinobi were cut from a different cloth and had comings and goings at different times of the day. So being informed and escorted to their second challenge at dusk probably wasn't a big surprise to the squad of four. Wander and wander they did, following a man clad in a dark trench coat who said relatively little. Maybe he was apprehensive?

He certainly was when they got to a set of huge gates, twelve foot or more high, thick and sturdy but worn down with time. Written on the front of the gate was a warning sign: NO ENTRY.

He stopped at the door, expecting the Genin to stop short of him. The man said nothing, nor looked at them as he performed seals against the door. One seal, the doors edges began to light up. Two seals, the lights spread down the crack of the centre of the door. Three seals, the door cracked open. But he did not open it. Instead he would turn to the four awaiting Genin, face as serious as anyone who was about to send four children into the unknown.

"Beyond here lies a region sealed for a purpose. There are boundaries on each side of the region akin to this door and supported by fuinjutsu, once you reach a boundary it will be unpassable," he explained, his back not quite facing the door, "your objective is to reach the gate house on the other side of the forest by sunrise. What you will find is not for me to tell you, but you have the skills capable to surpass any challenge or you wouldn't be attempting this round. There is not a linear path through, but you will know how to progress when you see it. The time is 6pm and you are facing north as soon as you enter these gates. There are clues how to progress littered in the forest - your first is to the north-west, but try not to tarry. The forest is a dangerous place at night."

The man would step aside, as the first two Genin shuffled silently in, paying no mind to their peers. Mako had a fierce scowl on her face. Raimaa looked apprehensive. As they all entered, the man would call out behind them.

"Oh and... if anything befalls you in the forest, there will be no help. This is a trial of your survivability. To be a Chuunin in this world, one will face inherently dangerous tasks where your parents or guardians won't be there to help you. If you fail to make it to the gate house, you will be left in the forest."

The man said it very matter of factly. Not once did he smile.

"Goodnight and good luck."

The large doors closed behind them with a groan. Not long after the doorway was sealed, the same lights from the fuinjutsu sealing the doorway behind them.

In front of them the Genin would be faced with something far less foreboding than they likely thought. It was a forest, no doubt about it, but it was calm. Warm, even. Birds chirped in the trees and sunlight filtered in through the rafters of the trees. It would remind them of nothing more than any other pleasant forest setting.

Mako was the first one to speak, determined and a little snappy. She didn't ask for introductions.

"Well then let's get going. He said to the north-west right?"

Raimaa cleared her throat, when she spoke she was a little timid sounding, clutching onto her pigtail nervously.

"But how can we tell which way is the north-west?"

Rubbing her left hand silently, Yumi stared at the large set of gates looming in front of her. The aura around it was gloomy, however she wasn’t sure if that was the gate’s fault or if the vanishing sunlight was affecting her judgement. Either way it wasn’t a welcoming sight. As the man she was following began to speak, the young puppeteer began to pay close attention. The hints he provided would prove to be very useful for this next part of the exams, and she would be a fool to let something like this pass her by.

As the man finished speaking and wished the group good luck, Yumi watched as the gate sealed behind them. Similar to the first part of the exam, there was no turning back. Turning her head back around, the young kunoichi surveyed the area in front of her. What met her eyes was a calm forest that was being bathed in the disappearing sunlight. And although it might seem like a pleasant sight, it was obvious to her that this wasn’t the case. Appearances could be deceiving after all. Plus this wouldn’t be a good exam if this was just a normal forest. No, there was something or someone in here that made this place dangerous. And she was sure she would find out before reaching her destination.

Hearing the people in her group began to speak, Yumi turned her attention to the people she was traveling with. The only male on the team was Sato Rin which she had talked to a few days ago. She didn’t have much to say about him except that he reminded her of a puppy, always so bright and cheerful. She didn’t mesh well with those types of people. The other two members of the team she had never met before however. But judging from what she had seen of the two, the black haired one was brash, while the other was the opposite. She didn’t mind working with them for now, seeing as how she knew nothing of the forest. However the moment they started doing something idiotic or annoyed her, she wouldn’t hesitate to leave. The alliance all of them had was only temporary after all. And that was something Yumi was sure she wouldn’t forget.

"The guide said that we would be facing north as soon as we enter the gates, so west would be to the left of us.”

As for why her teammate couldn’t deduce this on her own, Yumi had no idea. Was she not paying attention when the guide was explaining everything? Shaking her head silently, Yumi reached into her pocket and quietly unsealed Ms. Bubbles. Attaching her chakra strings to her puppet, she began to walk northwest with Ms. Bubbles by her side. She normally didn’t like taking the lead like this, but she didn’t trust her teammates to know what they were doing. First impressions were pretty important, and she wasn’t impressed to say the least. Still, there was safety in numbers, so she would have to keep that in mind. It was time to see what this forest had in store for her.

Rin listened quietly, just happy at this point that his hand was decently healed up and he had a full range of motion. He had a greater appreciation for fresh air or stale air. As long as there was air. He was nervous but not innately terrified to be going into this new challenge. He was at least outside and not all alone, he had the potential of making friends here although Yumi didn’t seem all that interested in making friends for whatever reason. It was very odd, he had to be honest, her lack of desire to collaborate was not very shinobi like in his mind. But he would do his best to get along with the group so that they could all benefit.

The door was foreboding and the words the man spoke were even more so, but he listened and collected information in silence. The door opened and they were set into the forest. He would survey the area in silence before looking between the three girls. Two of which he didn’t know, but they were obviously good enough to have gotten out of the stifling and suffocating room. Which meant they had useful skills, and he would need to befriend them somehow.

"Yup! Northwest!” Yumi set off and Rin started following in that direction too. Well less following and more going along because it was their only clue. They could cover a lot of ground walking fast although running might be too much. He had not been too surprised about the puppet he had seen plenty in Sunagakure.

"So, puppetry... What does everyone else specialize in? We can play off each other’s strengths and make up for any weak spots.” He spoke loudly enough for all to hear but not so loudly that he might attract attention that was unwarranted.

They began to move, leaving behind the large sealed door and heading deeper into the forest. There were many ways they could have told which way was north-west, one of them was  assuming they knew the way of north west and the other was actually following the setting sun. Raimaa stared at Yumie for a second longer than she should have, the irritation flickering across her face as the other girl replied condescendingly. But it was replaced by apparent anxiety as she took off into the woods.

Mako followed along, not directly trailing behind her but off to her left at a small distance, eyes scanning the trees through a scowl that by now was sure to bring no surprise to anyone.

They walked for five minutes in silence before Rin chimed in, the group picking their way through the heavier set trees as they wandered towards their target destination. Mako glanced back at Rin and rolled her eyes, she wasn't the sharing kind.

"None of your business blondie," she snapped. It was obvious she wanted to keep herself to herself and was only using the group as a means to an end.

Raimaa, on the other hand, fell in close next to Rin holding onto a pigtail as her wide blue eyes. She glanced through the sun filtered trees at the rabbits hopping over branches and bird nestling in their trees. The place didn't seem so scary after all.

"I'm, uh..." Raimaa started with a nervous mumble, "a-a genjutsu s-specialist."

Over trees they went, wandering through bracken and trees that were getting a little more sparse in their leaf distribution. For now there wasn't much to see, they had a little while before they reached their destination.

As Yumi walked silently through the forest, she listened as the members in her group began to speak. It seemed that Rin wanted everyone to talk about their specialties so they could work together, but it soon became apparent that a situation like that would never happen. None of the people in this group were friends, and judging from the black haired girl’s words, she felt the same. At least there was someone in this group who wasn’t naive. That was more than she could say for the other two.

Watching the silver haired girl move closer to Rin, Yumi raised an eyebrow. Were they already making alliances? Sure she probably could’ve done the same by being more polite, but honestly she didn’t feel like doing any of that. Still, two against one was a bad match up if things became worse between the group. Slowing her pace slightly, the young kunoichi began to walk silently next to the black haired girl. If she had to choose someone to side with, it would be her. She disliked her the least after all. It shouldn’t be too much of a problem seeing as how they both had the same mindset, only using each other to reach their end goal. Two on two were better odds in her opinion and hopefully the brash girl should feel the same. Plus with an attitude like that, it'd be hard for the girl to befriend the other group anyways. It didn't seem like their personalities would mesh well.

As the group continued their fast walk, Yumi glanced at the black haired girl before looking away. It would probably be better to start a conversation with her like the other two were doing, but she felt that wasn’t the right move in this situation. Not only did she dislike talking to people she didn’t know, she could logically assume her new partner felt the same way, based on what she had told Rin. Still, she’d rather have a brash partner than a shy one. They’d be more useful in battle after all. Turning her attention back to the forest, Yumi kept her eyes out for any strange sights. They hadn’t seen anything yet, but that didn’t mean there weren't things lurking in the shadows. She would need to be careful so she didn't get injured this early on.

Rin raised an eyebrow when the black haired girl snapped. Well, that was useful. Guess he could just, not help her if someone decided to attack them. He shrugged internally, in the past he might have been a bit hurt. Now he was more judgmental, thinking the black haired girl foolish. It was unlikely that whatever was in this forest, one could take on solo. They wouldn't have brought them to the gate in a group if it was the case.

Still at least someone was cooperating, he smiled to the girl as she leaned closer to him.

"Cool." He responded, nodding. Genjutsu could be useful in strategy. Casting illusions whilst having someone with a more physical side working alongside her would make a great team. Of course, that left the black haired girl in an unknown situation. He had no idea what she did, not that it particularly mattered. He knew the majority, which was enough for now. He had a feeling he would find out in due time. It was unlikely that they wouldn't come across some kind of combat in this forest, even if it did look nice and welcoming still. The sun would set soon enough and he had a feeling that's when things would get quite different.

Rin couldn't tell where they were going, just that they were still heading northwest. At the pace they were moving at, they were probably already a mile in, or more. He hoped they would reach their first destination before the sun fully set.

"What benefit do you two see in having an attitude problem?" He asked to the two girls walking a little ahead of the pack. He honestly didn't understand the resistance, it would be better if they all worked together at least in Rin's mind. Why were they trying to lower their chances of getting to the finish line safely? It didn't make any sense. Maybe they were just conceited and believed in their own ability? Being a shinobi required teamwork though and even Rin could scarcely deny that.

Mako turned to look at the girl as she closed quarters with her, raising an eyebrow but not saying anything. She found it odd that the girl suddenly pressed in close to her but then, who was she to query it? They were out in the middle of nowhere with the sun setting... But just as the two girls would make eye contact the rugrat from Sunagakure spoke up and Mako turned her raised brow into another world class scowl before looking at Rin. She huffed out a snort, but didn't retaliate, he wasn't worth the time in her eyes. Whether the other girl from the Storm Country said anything remained to be seen.

Raimaa watched the display, eyebrows raising at Rin's bluntness, surprised at first but then with a flicker of enjoyment flashed on her face before it quickly morphed back into worry. If they were quick to notice they might have noticed the shift in mood swings, but it was innocent enough. Maybe she found the irony of them bickering not half an hour into the challenge funny? It was quickly succeeded by an anxious look between the other trio around her before she focussed on her feet and kept walking.

TIME: 7:01PM

Regardless of their bickering, the girls and young Rin made good time. They'd trekked two miles or so in the hour but they'd seen nary a clue. The forest was a lot more compacted now and it'd take time and effort to get over the bracken and undergrowth. Mako had taken out a katana and began to chop away at the branches getting in their way, allowing them all to pass. Neither girl said relatively little but Raimaa stuck to Rin like glue. Where he stepped, she stepped.

Another five minutes of hiking and Mako let out a grumble.

"This is dumb. We've walked north-west for ages and we've still found nothing!"

She stopped walking and turned on her feet looking at the trees that spindled upwards twelve or so feet. Hands on her hips with her katana in her enclosed fist the girl looked back down at the group.

"These fucking trees, we'll never see anything!" she paused, looking back down at Raimaa, she was smaller than the rest of them, scrawny and looked lighter too. Better it her than Mako.

"Hey, you! Why don't you make yourself useful and climb that tree to see if you can see anything?" she said with irritation poised in the other girls direction.

Raimaa grabbed her pigtails again, innocently anxious face pulling into a frown of concern. She looked to Rin as if for reassurance before looking back at Mako.

"Uhm... I don't like c-climbing trees."

Rolling her eyes at Rin, Yumi continued on her walk. Being silent didn’t necessitate having an attitude and you were a fool if you thought it did. This was why she didn’t like loud people. If you didn’t want to talk to them, they always got offended and started making some sort of false claim against you. Still it was nothing the good old silent treatment couldn’t fix. It was nice to know where everyone’s loyalties laid now though. She wouldn’t have minded working with Rin at first, but the bridge between them was already slowly burning. And she had no plans to put it out.

As the black haired girl cut her way through branches, Yumi narrowed her eyes. Was this forest getting thicker? She had to have Ms. Bubbles basically hug her due to all the branches sticking out. And since she preferred areas more open than this, she was already getting annoyed. She also noticed the silver haired girl sticking really close to Rin behind her. She didn’t really know what was up with that, and she didn’t really care. Still, she kept it in her mind in case she could use that bit of information later on in the future.

Listening to her partner complain, Yumi nodded slowly. They had been walking for quite a bit of time and she was sure swinging around that sword wasn’t that fun. She probably could’ve helped, but she didn’t want to dull her puppet’s blades. Plus the brash girl seemed to have it handled, so there was no need for her to volunteer.

Once the ongoing conversation between the two girls finished, Yumi immediately stared at the silver haired girl in disbelief.

"You don’t like climbing trees?!”

What the hell kind of excuse was that? What kind of ninja was she? Not a good one, that was for sure. Sure Yumi was being a little mean, but this girl had it coming. First she couldn’t tell directions, second she didn’t like climbing trees, what was going to be the third thing? She didn’t like violence? Rolling her eyes, Yumi stretched her hand and sent Ms. Bubbles towards a nearby tree while glaring at the silver haired girl. Unbelievable.

Moving until she was side by side with her sword wielding companion, Yumi had Ms. Bubbles scale the nearby tree. All of the branches on it caused her slight annoyance, but it wasn’t as bad as climbing it herself. What she wouldn’t forget however was that her side of the team was doing all of the work while the other two were just getting the benefits without doing anything themselves. She wouldn’t forget that little tidbit of information. No, not at all.

As Ms. Bubbles made it to the top of the tree, Yumi would close her eyes and direct her chakra through her strings and towards Ms. Bubbles. Once their vision was connected, she would look around with Ms. Bubbles to see where they were. She would then relay the information to her black haired partner, not caring whether the rest of the team could hear or not. They needed to listen up if they wanted this information and if they didn’t catch it all? Well then they could just get over their little dislikes and actually climb a tree. What the hell kind of ninja doesn’t like climbing a tree?

NAME: Papettobijon [Puppet Vision]
RANK: D
CHAKRA USAGE: Very Low
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu (Puppetry)
ELEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION:
By closing their eyes and concentrating on their chakra strings, a puppeteer is able to look through the eyes of one of their puppets, assuming their puppet has eyes. This effect lasts as long as the puppeteer's strings are connected to their puppet and they have their eyes closed. This technique allows the puppeteer to scout around by using their puppets and to also help them see if they are hidden inside their puppet. The vision from the puppet is relatively the same as normal vision but with slightly reduced color.

Rin was just about to do the job of climbing the said trees when Yumi had her puppet move up the branches. He moved a little closer to the other two girls, his kunai out from before for cutting the occasional stubborn branch. He didn’t have a katana, so he made due with smaller blades to assist from behind. Although it gave him information. The girl who used katana might be a buki or tai specialist of some sort. It wasn’t perfect, but he could guess that much at least. Seemed that they were decently rounded, if they could manage to work as a team which currently was not functioning as well. Especially since Yumi spoke information directed at Mako, ignoring him and the silver haired girl. At least he was close enough to hear the information that Yumi spoke, although he couldn’t help but shake his head a little at her resistance in general. What was the point?

Sighing lightly he looked up and down the trees. Northwest was the only clue so it could not be the wrong clue. It would lead them to the next, but the trees were thicker and the sky was darker. They had less time. They could rush through the area but that could mean danger. But wasting time wasnt good either.

"We have to almost be there then.” He remarked. But chopping at trees forever wasn’t exactly an efficient way of getting there either.

TIME: 7:01PM

Mako said nothing as Raimaa made her response to Yumie, nor did Raimaa respond to Yumie except stare at the puppet as it climbed up the tree. With Rin watching her go up the trio remained in silence as the tree creaked under the young girls weight.

Up it went, scaling a tree that was easily twelve foot tall. Not a massive feat for mini assassins, but still some exertion would be required. Up she'd go and when she got to the top she'd have to peer out over the treeline, over the tops of broken and dying branches as autumn swept over the forest. From her angle she'd realise the size of the forest, running up into the hills and disappearing over the side of the mountain. The sun was setting low over the dip of the mountainside and the shadows of the forest were beginning to engulf the west most part. Night was coming.

But if she ignored the spectacular view, she'd also notice a break in the tree line not far from them, a five minute walk at the most. Abandoned house? Certainly run down enough and sat in darkness enough not to be inhabited.

"Well? What do you see?" shouted Mako impatiently, no tone of rudeness, just wanting to continue on already.

If Yumie brought Ms Bubbles down and began to lead them towards the house it wouldn't take them long to find it. Nestled in some denser trees that suddenly gave way to a small opening, they'd see it: an old house, run down, roof slightly dilapidated and caved in on the east side. Door hanging off as if someone had left the door open when they'd left and time had begun to erode the frames. A fine mist was beginning to settle amongst the fern leaves surrounding the house.

Raimaa stopped at the edge of the clearing, peering about.

"Looks creepy..."

"We’re in some sort of gigantic forest and it’s almost night judging from how low the sun is. There’s also something off in the distance a few minutes away that might be the clue our guide was talking about. I’ll lead us to it.”

Bringing Ms. Bubbles down the tree carefully, Yumi had her black haired partner cut a path towards the suspicious area she had seen earlier. After a few minutes of hacking, the dense trees finally gave way to an opening. Inside that opening laid a creepy run down house that looked like the slightest touch might collapse it. And judging from the caved in roof on the east side, that possibility might actually happen. The door was also open which was nice, seeing as how they wouldn’t have to break anything to get in. Assuming they even wanted to get in in the first place.

Lowering her voice to a whisper, Yumi began to speak.

"So who's going in? Whoever does it needs to make sure that they walk carefully so that the house doesn’t collapse on top of them and have our clue disappear.”

The only reason she even gave this warning was because a certain silver haired girl might do something dumb and have a situation like that happen. Assuming she even had the courage to go in the house to begin with. Still a decision would have to be made and soon. Darkness was approaching and they needed to be ready.

Rin stood by in silence for a bit. Then the house was revealed after a rather short ordeal of some more hacking at the trees. It looked like death, creepy and befalling to the hands of time. They didn’t necessarily have a lot to go off of unfortunately and this could very well be their first actual clue as to where to go next.

"Raimaa, if you do genjutsu can you check to see if there are any set up?” The mist settling in was a bit suspicious in Rin’s opinion as it was not there a little while ago.

"I think after we should split up around the home, do some inspection. There’s one of us for each cardinal direction. If there are clues here they should be in the immediate area or inside of the home.” He hoped that the group was at least moderately listening, and if they were not he would let them do as they pleased but hoped Raimaa would at least check for Genjutsu traps whilst he started on towards the home cautiously, beginning to inspect arguably the most immediate dangerous area of the front porch, even daring to move towards the front door. They didn’t have any torches but there were some dried fallen leaves and he could ignite them to see if it became necessary. For now though, he was searching for clues. He wanted to find something that would be helpful. A directional clue.

Where were they going next? Once he felt he had searched around enough he dared to move closer to the house and poke his head in cautiously. He didn’t want to stir trouble, so he very silent even going as far as to hold his own breath.

TIME: 7:05PM

Mako chopped through the trees, neither of the girls said much about the house when Yumie told them of it. They pushed through the dense undergrowth until the sword swinging wasn't needed - then everyone stopped.

House was dilapidated, near to falling over. They all examined it, Raimaa exclaiming she found it creepy and Mako dipping her chin into her collar as she stared at the house. Yumie spoke up first, asking who was first going to go into the house.

Mako crossed to look at the house, skirting around the edges of the ferns but not getting much closer.

"You have a puppet, don't you, Yumie?" she quipped back curiously. Why didn't the girl with the dispensable puppet send it in instead?

Rin spoke up next as he followed in her footsteps, getting closer to the house than any of them.  Raimaa nodded the once and concentrated, sending out a small pulse of chakra over the house.

"I... don't think it's trapped," she muttered, picking her way towards the doorway nearest Rin.

Mako moved forwards, stepping onto the porch and pushing past Rin into the house. It was deathly quiet and the dust floated in the air; a sign that no one had been here in a long time. She began to check the rooms, her feet unusually silent on the floor.

And, indeed, though the house looked creepy and the mist looked foreboding, further investigation into the house wouldn't find them running for their lives. They'd have to have been careful on the floorboards, time had rotted the wood on the one floor house and even though there weren't any drops that they could see, the last thing they needed was to trip up on broken wood.

They'd have to investigate further into the house in order to find the clue they were looking for.

"I do, and all of us have legs as well.”

Raising an eyebrow at her partner, Yumi stared at her curiously. Why were they stating obvious things? Before the two’s conversation could continue, their other silver haired teammate scanned the area to see if there were any hidden traps. She didn’t find any, but Yumi was still going to proceed as if there were. Just because Raimaa didn’t see any traps didn’t mean that there weren’t any. As the group headed in the house and began to split up, the young kunoichi let out a small sigh. If an enemy was in here, then splitting up would only hurt the group. Still, the action was already in motion, so there was nothing she could do but follow along. Hopefully this wouldn’t come back and bite them later.

Going in her designated direction carefully, Yumi surveyed the house with Ms. Bubbles in the lead. It was slightly difficult to see, but thanks to the house being so rundown, some of the outside sunlight was shining in. This made it easier to search for the mysterious clue that she was actually looking for. She also paid close attention to the floorboards to avoid any mishaps that might happen due to negligence. It wouldn’t do to be injured so early on.

Rin found that there was nothing around the house to look at, so he was about to make his way inside of the house. Taking Raimaa's word for there not being any traps. Granted, he was beaten to the punch by the dark haired girl. His nose scrunched, she was irritating him. But he couldn't do a lot about it so for now he just followed inside behind her as she shot on past him.

He wandered in, he walked carefully but his weight caused the house floorboards to creak beneath him. Which made him all too aware of the noise he was making and try to walk even more carefully. He wasn't exactly in the expertise of sneaking around. His own sounds made him aware of the fact that Mako was quite silent. She could sneak around at least. That was something the team could exploit later. Either way he started to look around.

It was quite dark in the house, but not quite as dark as the puzzle round from before, there were shadows at the very least and the fog was quite thick but not thick enough to obscure his vision completely. He moved around careful to not get in the way of the others looking around, but his intentions were to find something in here that would lead them on to the next direction. They didn't have a lot of time to do this, and he didn't intend to stay here forever. There had to be something, and he was careful to inspect everything that looked even moderately interesting or out of place.. Or maybe in place.
