[Senju Kazuto]

As winter ended and spring rolled with warmer wings, the advent of the next iteration of the Chunin exams was closer. So when the news of the event came, he wasn't truly surprised. The news that it was going to be set on the far distant land of Yukigakure was something that he found surprising. He hadn't known an exam to take place in such a desolate and fringe part of the world. Yet he supposed that was the idea behind such a training, to test the resolve and abilities of hopeful Genin that could become Chunin. It was the natural order of things. Yet as he made his way to the training yard that was within the Senju Clan compound, Kazuto understood the need the shed the more calm nature that usually reigned in the way he taught those that sought whatever scrap of lore and wisdom he could provide. And he needed to be unbiased when it came to his words whenever both of whom he was about to teach did a mistake. But the harshness would be necessary, mostly out of the belief that the more both women sweat in the training arena meant that they would bleed less on the actual location of the exams. As he reached the training yard, desolate and without the tough of nature, an arena of loose soil that had become what it was now when no plants had taken root. He would turn and wait for Kazui and Miho to arrive, finding a single piece of lumber as a stool, sitting on top of it as it were a makeshift throne, his hands going to the loose soil out of some sense of ritual as he rubbed the dirt on the palm of his hands, almost as a way to reassure himself. As he would look unto his hands, he would raise his sight to the sound of upcoming steps, they light steps over the loose soil. "You're late." He said in a stern tone, without distinction to the Uchiha and the soon to be Senju.

’It’s just the exams, there is no need to get so worked up.’ Kazui would think to herself as she made her way towards the training yard within the confines of the Senju compound. It had been awhile since the girl first stepped foot in this part of the village, mostly because...well many of the Uchiha and Senju didn’t see eye to eye, so her presence was never really welcomed until she became Kazuto’s pupil, but even then she still felt out of place. But she managed to ignore the feeling, and instead she only focused on the words of her master, he was the only one who’s opinion mattered.

As the girl made her way through the compound, she noticed a familiar face walking along the same path. It was Kazuto’s lady friend, Miho. Kazui hadn’t talked to her in awhile and actually every time she saw her she was reminded of when her grandmother passed. A sigh escaped her as she picked up her pace to catch up with the girl.

"Hey, Miho!”

The Uchiha would say softly and quietly as she sped up her pace and began to walk in stride with the medic. They never got the chance to talk much outside of whenever Kazui stopped by to visit Kazuto, other than that the lady was still a mystery to her. Kazui placed her hand into her pockets as she slightly shrugged her shoulders and released a sigh of relief.

As the two continued towards the training ground, Kazui could see her mentor sitting there, his fingers running through the loosened soil as he sat upon a log, he didn’t seem very happy, and his words would somewhat confirm that as well.

"Sorry.”

The girl would say as her eyes averted towards the grass beneath her. This training was probably important, especially since the exams were around the corner and he would be looking to get Kazui prepared for it. The girl didn’t know much about the details but she did know that she wanted to make not only her master proud but her mother, Hiruko, as well.

The bitter chill of winter had now passed, though spring had sprung with the knowledge of the exams once again raising it's head to greet all who were to take part in it. Miho was among those who would take to the challenge, though it wouldn't be her first time. Of course, she was certainly more determined than ever to pass. If failure had taught her anything, it was that she required strength and a stronger resolve this time around. Something that came with her training. Walking the path to the compound, she'd hear her name being called out, seeing the younger shinobi she had met before, a smile crossing her lips as she nodded her head in greetings. "Hello Kazui…" The two had spoke very little since the events of her grandmother's passing. But she imagined that the space was required. After all, she had been there upon the woman's death. More so than that, she was a visual reminder of such a terrible event in the girl's life. No one wished to see that, though she could not help that fact anymore than the moon being second to the sun. "It's good to see that you are well..." In entering the compound,the two would approach their trainer for the day, noting his appearance as he appeared to be checking the state of the grounds. In commenting how Kazui was late, Miho would raise her brow a tad as she shook her head. "Kazuto...if she's late than so am I..." Her tone was calm, yet her demeanor remained unchanged as she heard the girl apologize none the less, prompting Miho to cross her arms over her chest in wait. SPOILER: Click to show

"I know." Kazuto quickly replied to Miho. He wondered for a second if he had seen through the facade. "We have little time to dither anyways." He told them both, deciding that it was far better to get down to business and begin the training. He understood very well the natures of his student and his fiance. Kazui was quiet but she had a tremendous drive to succeed that could become a weakness and Miho had an unbreakable will but she was also stubborn, if she could not pass around a problem she would try to tackle it into submission. With that lore he decided where to begin. "Both of you have great skills, but you both tackle problems head on." He would tell both of them. "Whilst this is a good trait in some occasions, the benefit for a tactical retreat when there is no other option left. He would tell them before his hands would begin to weave the set of hand signs, doing so in a slow and deliberate manner so they would both see the hand signs of the technique. As his chakra molded he would feel his body energized beyond what would be possible under normal circumstances. Suddenly he disappeared in a poof of white smoke that created rings on where he should be, before he would materialized behind both women as his quick demonstration was over. "The body flicker technique can serve you for that purpose. It might seem as an easy technique, but you need to consider the difficulty it can present. Most techniques, channel chakra outwardly or in a single point. The Body flicker technique does the opposite. You allow some of your chakra to flow through your body, giving it a jump start of energy that would allow you great feats of speed that the eye can't follow naturally. But if you over do you will tear muscles, damage ligaments and so on. The trick is finding the balance between power and control." He told both women, hoping that they would assimilate his teachings.

The girl would shift her eyes between both Kazuto and Miho as she watched the two of them exchange words. Miho folded her arms and awaited the Senju’s reply after informing him that they were both late. In all honesty, Kazui was used to the stern nature of her mentor, it was just the way he was, she supposed, there wasn’t much to worry about, the good would normally outweigh the bad. Kazui would place her hands in her pockets and kick her feet at the soil beneath her sandals as Kazuto responded to the lady. Whenever she was around these two together, she often got parent vibes from the two of them and she always felt as if she were the child in every situation, she always found herself in the middle.

A sigh would escape from the girl’s lips as she continued to shift her weight back and forth as Kazuto decided to not allow another second to waste, they didn’t have much time, so he said so right into training they would go. The man would start off by complimenting their skills, which was nice but there were always two parts to the story. Apparently, according to Kazuto, she and Miho both liked to tackle problems head on. Kazui didn’t know much about Miho as a shinobi but she could definitely see the stubbornness within her personality and within her own demeanor as well. ’Fair enough.’ The girl would think to herself as she continued to silently listen to the man as he spoke.

Tactical retreat. A very foreign concept to Kazui herself. There weren’t many situations where the girl could see herself retreating, it wasn’t who she was. There was a certain sense of pride that the girl carried with her, and now that she was beginning to get older and become stronger, she finally began to receive the slightest bit of acceptance from her clan. She feared as if she began to retreat now, that everything she’s worked so hard for would be taken away. Yet, the Uchiha would remain silent as she watched the Senju weave hand seals slowly, her mind memorizing each seal specifically, burning the thoughts deeply in her memory.

Her eyes remained fixed on him until he just...vanished. Where he once stood was now vacant and empty. ’Did he turn invisible?’ Kazui would question herself as Kazuto’s voice was soon heard behind her, causing the girl to slightly flinch before turning around to face him yet again.

"Master Kazuto…”

The girl would say softly as she looked at the man with a less than amused expression on her face.

"Are you teaching us to run away from our problems?”

She would ask as she folded her arms across her chest and awaited his answer.

There was a brief moment of pause as she looked back toward Kazuto. Though in hearing his statement, his expression shifted slightly, though remained his neutral normal as she raised her brow with a small smile on her face. In the end, he seemed to continue on as time was indeed of the essence. Her hands resting at her back, she'd listen to him as she began to explain that both her and Kazui had the similar trait of rushing in to take on their problems head on. Though, the two seemed to also neglect the useful concept of a tactical retreat. As he would soon demonstrate, disappearing before their eyes after a series of hand symbols, the speed of his movement would prompt him to appear behind them, leading to Miho looking over in just as much surprise as Kazui. The Body Flicker technique...she had seen it more than once over the years...it was certainly a useful skill to have in one's arsenal. Though, as Kazui seemed to state in question, it appeared as though Kazuto was teaching the two how to run away. The girl was still young, so she likely was trying to understand the meaning behind such a lesson. Miho, on the other hand, had a feeling she knew where the man was getting at. "Run away?" He said with a chuckle, shaking his head with some amusement at the commentary that his student had levied against him. It seemed that she still failed to understand the intricacies of combat. And deception and even the slightest of variations could determine victory from defeat and death. "Would you meet a phalanx of spears head on, Kazui? Would you trust your reflexes and the precognitive sight of your clan's ability once you develop your eyes? Would those same reflexes aid you if you were attacked from behind? Do the eyes of your clan provide you sight beyond the known capabilities of the Sharingan?" He asked her, allowing the girl to think on what answer he could give her before continuing, a slight sight flicking to look at Miho, making sure that he would follow his lesson as well. "When you're surrounded in all sides, out-manned and outmaneuvered, then retreating is the best chance. I understand that we as shinobi we're expected to meet our foes in the battlefield. But the life of every shinobi in this village is precious, it is not a currency to be spent so casually. Often to win a war, you most lose a battle, you most consolidate before launching a strike that will turn the momentum of any conflict in your favor." It was as the tactical doctrines that he adhered to taught him, as a student of war himself, he had seen that deception in the form of retreat gave you the tactical advantage to consider the disposition of the enemy and were to strike. Still holding his sight on the girl he would then nod towards Miho. "But perhaps you're not convinced yet. However, I urge you to consider the role of the medic." He said as he looked at his beloved. "No shinobi is more courageous than the medics I believe. When they must tend for the wounded in the midst of a battlefield, they must often do so whilst they use their bodies as bulwark and if the situation demand it, take the wounded elsewhere as fast as their skill and abilities allow it so they may carry the ministrations of their craft. Is it, escaping from their problems as well? He would tell the Uchiha before his eyes went to Miho, his expression asking her if he was doing a good job at dispelling any doubt his pupil might harbor. Before his sight returned to his protege. "It is not running away, Kazui." The Senju would intone, placing his hand on her shoulder. "The First Axiom of Victory is to be other where your enemy wishes you to be. Power does not always determine the outcome of a skirmish, the keenest weapon at your disposal is your mind."

Kazui stood in silence as she listened and awaited Kazuto’s reply. His reaction wasn’t what she expected however, and truthfully the way he made it sound at first was as if they should run. Arms remained folded as the Senju continued on with his explanation, asking the girl various questions of what she would do in certain situations and if her clan abilities could do this and that. A sigh escaped her lips as her eyes averted towards the ground.

"Well...I could. I think.”

The girl would say softly as she softly scratched the top of her head. Dealing with a phalanx of spears didn’t seem like much of a big deal to handle, but she guessed it was depending on who exactly wielded the spears. Kazui would rest her eyes and shrug as she tried to provide answers to her master’s questions.

"I mean, I also think anyone is kind of screwed if they get attacked from behind. Unless they can sense the person behind them, there isn’t much that can be done there, but uh I see where this is going. I’ll hold my questions until the end.”

Kazui would say as she took a step away from Kazuto and allow the man to go on with his explanation. Hands resting behind her back as she continued to shift her weight back and forth between one leg and the other. Kazuto was making sense somewhat. It’s okay to lose a battle or two, and doing so may be necessary to win the war. The girl would take a mental note as he provided another example, using Miho to get his point across. The role of a medic, they surely had a lot to deal with and the example he provided did make much more sense. But that only worked for Miho, Kazui was no medic but the Uchiha understood more or less.

"Understood.”

The young girl would say in a whispered tone.

Miho would listen, her eyes remaining upon Kazuto as he attempted to get his meaning through to Kazui, who also voiced the disadvantage of having one's back to their opponent in the midst of a tactical retreat. Though, the older male seemed capable of giving a good explanation for such a concept to be valued. It certainly had been seen in plenty of her own personal encounters. As if waiting to see if she agreed with his usage of her own role as an example, likely to see how he was doing so far with his instruction. With a nod, Miho would smile briefly, silently giving her support, though being sure to remain just as attentive as she was certain Kazui was. In the end, the girl appeared to understand for the most part, which likely would perhaps aid her in the future. Running away, while not fun in the least, was just as valid in a fight then going head on. Miho knew this, but didn't always practice it fully. The mind was the greatest tool that any shinobi had. It allowed for you to outthink your opponent, rather than overwhelm them. There were not always cases when you could simply lash out and make your foe submit to you. SPOILER: Click to show

"Well then." Kazuto said as he heard the acceptance of his student and the encouraging smile of his fiance. "We can proceed then." He said as he would weave hand signs with quick flicks of his fingers, allowing his chakra to mold and communicate with the root beneath. Suddenly from the ground two rings out of wood would break the surface of the training area, they were rough and unremarkable, easily overlooked in any other circumstance but would serve their purpose for the lesson. Satisfied with his creation, the Senju would turn to both women and as he moved in to continue. "As I said before, the body flicker technique is energizing your body for the briefest of instances." He said, retreading his previous words. He could imagine that both Miho and Kazui were trying to imagine how could that be. "Think of it as a geyser, as energy is accumulated and suddenly released. That is the same process." He would tell them both. "Now, do close your eyes and imagine that. Take a deep breath and picture your own chakra as a wellspring that explodes for a second, let it reach to every fiber of your body." Kazuto said, his hands behind his back as he walked around them. "Now open your eyes." The Senju said as he stood before them his face and tone mirroring each other. "You must be careful with this technique. The body is not meant for such release of sudden energy. Whilst useful this technique can only be used a handful of times." Allowing for his words to sink in before he resumed. "Now pay attention to the seal you will need." He said as he would form the tiger seal and then looked at both. "I hope that you both are able to appear in the midst of those rings." He said as he took a step to their side and crossed his arms before his chest. "Before you try anything. Think on this mantra." Kazuto told them calmly. "Picture your destination, have determination and use the technique with deliberation." He said, repeating the same mantra that his teacher told him when he was about Kazui's age. "Now, go on ahead and try."

And so on they went. Without much of a delay the three of them would return to the lesson at hand. Kazui would remain quiet until the end of the training to ensure that she wasn’t missing anything, her main question was already answered now all she had to do was learn the technique, simple enough right? The girl watched as Kazuto quickly weaved hand seals and focused his chakra. Two wooden rings arose from the ground. The young Uchiha was still watching on, ready to start her training.

The body flicker was more or less just energizing the entire body for a brief moment. That made enough sense, it was kind of like what Yusaku tried to teach her when she was still a student in the academy, albeit that this seemed a bit more complicated in nature in comparison to the other technique. Without much hesitation, Kazui would close her eyes and take in a deep breath as she began to picture her chakra exploding much like a geyser for a split second. ’Be explosive. Be explosive.’ The girl would repeat to herself in her mind as she pictured her chakra flowing through the entirety of her body.

Once Kazuto told them to open their eyes, she would open them and look towards her master for further instructions. He went on to explain that this was a risky technique. It made sense however that this could only be used so much, the body can’t normally handle so much strain. At least that’s what Kazui thought. The girl would nod her head in agreement. She wouldn’t overuse this technique unless she had to.

Now it was time to try the technique over again. There wasn’t much of a need for Kazuto to show the hand seal again, Kazui had already memorized it from earlier, but there was something that he wanted them to know before trying. Think about your destination, have determination, and use the jutsu with deliberation. Kazui would nod her head slightly and reply.

"Hai.”

The girl would say softly as she formed the hand seal and began to mold her chakra as best as she could. The girl could feel the chakra energizing her body, but as she tried to take off, nothing happened. It was as if her chakra just gave out on her. Kazui would sigh as she returned to her previous spot to try the technique again.

In training, the basics had as much value as the more advance lessons to come behind them. Listening carefully to Kazuto's words, she'd watch as he'd begin to summon two rings of wood from the ground, prompting her to shift her gaze in their direction, following it's return to him. As he proceeded to give them further instruction, Miho would then close her eyes to focus her thoughts and chakra. There was a looming silence at first, but the young woman could feel it building within her. Like a wellspring....rising and settling... She'd repeat this to herself, soon opening her eyes upon request as Kazuto proceeded to give them their task. They were to appear within the rings using the technique he had just taught them, allowing them to go to their attempts, but to keep in mind of their destination, to have determination, and to use the technique with deliberation. Nodding her head, the medic would release a breath as she would begin to perform the seals required. Miho knew them from her own training years before this, but that didn't mean she had perfected the technique in and of itself. In the end, the task presented to them now was dangerous due to the possible tear if too much chakra was released. Or worse, if the destination had been put off by a drifting thought. Such injury was important to remember, but it wasn't about to deter Miho from going forth with it. Holding the seal in place, her eyes remained closed as she centered her thoughts on where she wanted to go, chakra charging within her being as it prepared itself. Thinking of the geyser, the sudden release and then settling after, the image of the wooden ring appeared into her mind and within moments, the female would disappear within a puff of smoke. Her body was gone, though where she appeared wasn't exactly where she wanted to be at the moment. Seeming to now be standing upon the surface of one of the rings, the medic would look own and release a sigh herself. Of course, she didn't specific to her thoughts just where it was that she wanted to be in doing so, leading to her jumping down and preparing to start again from her previous position. He wasn't surprised when they both failed to perform the technique in the first attempt. It had taken him over a dozen of tries to actually get half way, although he could see that Miho, with her formidable chakra control, was very likely the candidate to master the technique first. Kazui was struggling as any novice would do and he hoped that she would not feel discourage because of that. He watched with quiet amusement as how they would continue, taking note of their past actions as they would try to perform the technique again and again. As he sat down on the tree trunk he began to formulate the recommendations that he would give both women after their first attempt. "Kazui, take a deep breath." He instructed his student. He said as he rose to his feet. "Trust your instincts and don't overthink." Kazuto supposed that the girl would block herself if she continued to be too hard on herself, which of course she would do as she had picked some of his own stubbornness as they would spend more and more time together training and improving her skills. His sight would then shift to his fiance, noting that she was doing better than Kazui, the experience and training serving her well. "Miho, consider the distance you must travel, if you're short then try to overshoot." The Senju would say. Such form of thinking would serve her well, specially if she was tracking a moving target. "If you were trying to teleport to a tree branch then you should also keep in mind the height of where you are going." With that the clan leader of the Senju sat again and awaited for both woman to follow his advice. As he sat down he kept his silence, awaiting for both of them to continue.

Kazui gritted her teeth and mumbled a few less than appropriate words underneath her breath before eventually letting her anger out through a quick sigh. She had a habit of losing focus when learning something new, not so much of her being distracted by some outside cause but more so her not paying attention to the way she molds her chakra. Once her master stood up and told her to take a deep breath, she would do exactly that. A deep breath in through her nose, and out of her mouth would calm her down even more. ’Just focus Kazui, just..focus.’ The Uchiha would think to herself.

As the girl weaved the tiger hand seal again, she would take in another deep breath. ‘Just do it.’ Those words echoing over and over again in her mind. ‘Don’t overthink it, just do it.’ With that, the girl would begin to mold her chakra precisely. The chakra energized her body, she felt powerful, but that wasn’t saying much. All that was left for her to execute. In an instant, the genin would wake off towards the ring in a blur, but stop just short. Falling to a single knee, Kazui would slap her hand on the dirt, squeezing the loose earth tightly in her fist before releasing it.

"So .. close.”

The girl would mumble behind heavy breathing. She knew that she couldn’t give up, but she could surely see how this technique could put an enormous amount of strain on one’s body. Forcing herself up to her feet, she would lightly walk back to where she started to give it another try. If Kazui had to stay out and practice this jutsu until the sun set and rose again, then she wouldn’t hesitate to do so. As long as she perfected this jutsu, that’s all that mattered as of now.

Both females were struggling with the technique in their own way, though Kazuto was capable of giving them helpful feedback to aid in their success. As Miho returned back to her starting position, she nod in the direction of Kazuto, acknowledging his advice before turning back in the direction of the wooden ring before her. Being mindful of the distance was sound advice, and the chance of overcompensating to help in doing so was also a good tip. Performing the handseal required once again, the brunette would narrow her vision as she focused upon her target. This time, she'd remain mindful of where it was that she wanted to go, considering the space between it's emptiness. Miho would even think of going to the opposite end of it, perhaps allowing for that gap to be extended for her to move in. Within moments, her chakra would boil over yet again, her body vanishing within a burst of smoke, leaving her position yet again. It was an amazing sensation to know that despite not feeling said movement, the tendons of your muscles were indeed reacting. The speed of it was so instant that they'd have what could be a ten second delay, giving the meaning as to why such a move could be dangerous if used too many times. Before long, Miho would appear again, this time extending her arms out as she held on to the edges of the inner space within the ring, her body position in the center as she released a breath.
