While not all of the participants of the 2nd round of the exams had been forced to go through the entire week-long trial, every participant had spent at least some amount of time in the labyrinth. That meant that those that exited it earlier were given even more time to recover from the ordeal than those that completed the entire trial, though everyone was given a few days of rest at the very least. It was during this intermission that the final round was revealed to the remaining participants.
Traditionally, the 3rd round was usually a simple matter, a sort of way of testing a genin's raw combat capabilities while the preceding rounds tested other traits and skills. Occasionally there were some frills added to keep the final round interesting, but this year it was decided to keep it rather straightforward and simple, much like the previous year's exams held in Yuki no Kuni.
It wasn't until the day arrived that Akihiko would know who he was facing off against, and as luck would have it, it was to be his former, temporary ally Hikari. Just like the first time they met, they were to be opponents once more, an all out fight that would display their readiness to become chuunin to their villages. The two weren't the first pair to fight for the day, but when their time came, they would be ushered from their respective preparation rooms out into the stadium where they would do battle.
Their battlefield was simplicity itself. A round arena where spectators could watch from high seats all around with the actual combat taking place on a flat, natural stage. There were a cluster of trees off to one side accompanied by a small pond, and on the opposite side of that small grove was a pair of medium-sized boulders jutting out of more rocky terrain. A sampling of different terrains for sure, but still very much flat and open: much like Nohara no Kuni's greater landscape.
The two participants were instructed to meet in the center, where a proctor awaited them. Akihiko would be able to see Hikari in her true, usual attire, not the uniforms that had been provided to them. It was a rather unorthodox getup, a burnt orange sort of tracksuit with white stripes running down along the sides. She wore her shinobi headband around her waist, proudly displaying the Konohagakure insignia, while her pouch hung subtly at her hip. On her hands were navy blue fingerless gloves, solidifying the information that Akihiko already knew: she was a taijutsu specialist. The girl greeted the Kumo genin with a hearty smile, only turning her attention away from her opponent as the proctor loudly explained the rules.
"This is a no limits fight with a one hour time limit. You are free to use any jutsu and any equipment that you'd like. The fight will only come to an end when one party surrenders, is incapacitated, or if I judge that a participant can no longer continue and I intervene. There is to be no interference from outside sources, and should you exit the arena, you will be automatically disqualified. Have I made myself clear?"
The Kusagakure shinobi scrutinized both of the genin, grunting when Hikari nodded her understanding before his gaze bored into Akihiko. When and if both genin confirmed that they were ready, the proctor would swing his hand downward to signal the start of the fight, jumping out of the way immediately after.
