A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

If Kizumi had to rank all the port cities she'd been through, Port City would be pretty damn high on the list. It was in the name, really. She loved a thing that told you directly what it was, no muss or fuss.

It had been a semi-frequent stop on her travels, her missions and personal wanderlust often bringing her to or through the Land of Fire for one reason or another; protection detail, a restaurant she loved, a blacksmith she fancied. Over the years her reasons grew like thick moss on a cool damp stone, and so often she found that when her boots left the deck of a ship they landed on the stonework streets of Port City.

On this occasion, it was work that called her to these docks. Not a mission, and not quite training, but catching up with an old friend who had worked with her through both. Kizumi had sent him a letter just the week prior, giving him a heads-up that she would be arriving on a ship due to dock on exactly this day, she'd be staying at that one inn down by the hole-in-the-wall sake bar they'd gone to that one time, and she'd like to see him if he had time.

So Kizumi did what she liked to do every time she came to Port City: she went to precisely that sake bar, sat down at the counter, and ordered a bottle. Two cups.

Hopefully Toshi-sensei got her note.

GREETINGS

Toshizou wasn't one to warm-up to many people, especially during his younger years. He was so detached from anything other than his duty as a Shinobi, that he even neglected his two daughters, only truly becoming a part of their lives in the very recent past. Oddly enough this focus made him grow close to a few shinobi, some even from different nations. He liked to help people train, foster the newer generations and allies from different villages. He believed that this exchange was invaluable to the strengthening of their nations, their alliance, and paramount to the inevitable wars to come.

But even among the many people he trained, Hirana Kizumi was held in a special spot in his heart, like a younger sister he never really had. He never told her he felt that way, but his affection and care were something he never bothered hiding. Therefore, it goes without saying that he was filled with happiness when he received word that she would be in the Land of Fire, and quickly made his way to their usual meeting spot, the sake bar in Port City.

As the man opened the door of the establishment, his sharp, vermillion eyes immediately found the woman. To be fair, he already knew exactly where she was even before he arrived in the city, thanks to his incredible sensor ability with his Mind's Eye. A smile in the corner of his mouth formed as he approached her, resting his hand on the woman's bare shoulder. "Your ever increasing beauty only pales in comparison to ever growing strength of your chakra, Kizumi-chan." he said, chuckling lightly as he moved to the chair in front of her, sitting down without delay. "I can positively say I missed you." he added.

"You can train a dog with food. You can buy a person with money. But there isn't a man alive that can put down the Will of Fire. Some things will never change. The Will of Fire will never be extinguished"

A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

He didn't leave her waiting long, but she should have expected as much; his sensory ability had been wildly strong for as long as she'd known him. It was a little scary, to be honest, but his skill was something she admired about him; and, more importantly, she deeply respected his willingness to share that knowledge. Even though he was barely more than a year older than her, he had over a decade more of experience than her, and it was evident. She'd learned a lot from him over the years, and was deeply grateful.

But gods, he just couldn't turn off the charm, could he.

"You're a terrible flirt and a scoundrel," Kizumi scolded, but she was grinning widely, and she squeezed the hand on her shoulder fondly. "I missed you too, Toshi-sensei."

She poured his cup of sake, topped off her own, and took a sip. The warmth of it was lovely, spreading down her throat and through her chest with a comforting burn, and she exhaled a deeply satisfied sigh before putting her cup back down.

"It's been a while," she said, resting her elbow on the table and her chin in her palm. "Not since I came through for that mission in Tea Country last summer, right?" That mission had been a fun one--she barely remembered what she had been sent there to do, but the tea houses were amazing, and the mission had been a success anyway, obviously. How have you been?" A gleam shone in Kizumi's eye that promised trouble. "Broken any new hearts lately?"

CATCHING UP

Kizumi responded to his light-hearted flirting, he chuckled lightly, shook his head and raise his hands. "Guilty as charged!" his response came in a rather humorous tone; Toshizou was well aware of his overall behaviour and he knew he was too old and too set in his ways to change it, even though he was at least trying to be a less negligent father as of late. When she squeezed his hand, he responded in kind, and his smile was honest and joyous for a change, something that didn't come to him very often; his face had more expression marks related to frowning his brows than smiling, but he didn't mind that much, it was only natural he would have some as he got closer to his forties.

When he sit down, Kizumi poured sake on his cup and he bowed to her in gratitude; even though they were good friends, he was still a leader of a clan and member of the village council, etiquette and courtesy was part of his life. Then, he lifted his cup to the woman. "To this lovely assembly." and with that being said, he downed the sake in one big sip, and then placed the cup back on the table. "Nothing like a warm sake in the middle of winter." it was no surprise Toshizou favoured the warmer seasons, he was - after all - a fanatic about his homeland.

It had been a while since they saw each other, and at that statement, he nodded. "Almost too long." he added, only to chuckle a bit when she mentioned their mission in the tea country. "That's right. We almost overprepared for that. It was a good time." he remembered with fondness in his heart. Toshi almost got ready to respond to her next question, but when the next question came, he paused, arched one of his brows and scratched the back of his head. "Well... You see... You can't teach an old dog new tricks, right? But I'm trying to behave better. I only have... Three people I'm kinda seeing now, so that's some progress." he said as he grabbed the bottle of sake and topped both their cups once again, downing it shortly after it.

"I've been trying to get closer to my daughters. I told you I was in touch with Tokaku last summer, but this year I reached out to my youngest. She didn't even know I was her father." he sighed, feeling a bit embarrassed about it, but then he shook his head. "How about you? Anybody managed to find a place in your heart yet?" he asked.

A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

It was easy to see why women fell for Toshi left right and center; he was polite, courteous, charming. Compliments always flowed freely from him, like flattery was as natural to him as breathing, and he had this mysterious air about him, like you'd never get a chance to hear all the stories of the life he'd lived.

Kizumi would kill for even a fraction of his game.

"Only three people," she muttered, shaking her head in dismay. It was enough to make her down her sake immediately, and tap her cup impatiently on the table for another refill. Three people, and Kizumi hadn't been on a date in months. "It is progress," she admitted. "Every side piece you don't pick up is a step away from true scoundrelhood."

At his query into Kizumi's own love life, she just snorted audibly, and ignored the question entirely. You can't talk about what doesn't exist, after all, and Toshi's daughters were a far more interesting topic of conversation.

"Uchiha Tokaku, right?" Kizumi tapped one finger against her cheek, thoughtful. "She's gotta be up for promotion soon. Isn't there a chuunin exam coming up? And Iruhi--her mother never told her about you?" Kizumi tsk'd, shaking her head. "That must've been awkward."

DAUGHTERS

Toshizou arched one of his brows when she muttered about the fact that he was only seeing three people while shaking her heard. The waiter was quick to respond to her impatient tap and brought another bottle, and Toshizou quickly refilled both of their cups with warm sake, a treat during winter. When she did admit it was progress he chuckled lightly and nodded. "I'm even considering... Maybe... Don't quote me in that... Going exclusive! For the first time ever!" he admitted, feeling a sense of amusement now that he had said it out loud. "I'm working on it... Albeit I have to admit it's more challenging than I thought." he admitted, pausing to down his cup and refill it almost immediately; Toshi was known for being able to hold down his liquor exceedingly well.

He noticed that she dodged the question about her love life and he chuckled, shaking his head. "Always a mystery there, eh?" but he didn't insist on the topic, and the woman was smart to bring up the topic of his daughters. Toshi immediately tensed up a bit, adjusting his position to sit more properly at his chair and drink more sake; he needed that to face this subject. When Kizumi spoke his eldest daughter's name, he nodded. "Aiya's daughter, yes..." he liked Aiya, even though he never committed due to his work. The woman died a few years ago due to some illness, and he felt bad for it, for he had not been by her side during her last days.

Toshizou nodded again when she mentioned the potential promotion. "Indeed. The exam will be in the Land of Water, of all places..." he clicked his tongue, showing his dissatisfaction with that. "At least I will get to see their new Kage, see what he is like, and try to analyse what we can expect from those bastards."/color] he added, before focusing back on the subject at hand. Toshizou sighed and shook his head. "She hates me. Can't blame the woman, I knocked her up and vanished for years. I didn't even know she got pregnant until Iruhi was born." and it was clear he was bothered and mildly ashamed by that. "It was awkward at first, then it became quite emotional. I'm doing what I can to make up for lost time though..." he sighed, scratching the back of his head.

A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

"Going exclusive,” Kizumi mused aloud, tapping her chin in a pantomime of deep thought. "Difficult to manage with three girlfriends, I’d imagine!”

She was teasing, of course; it was hardly her business what Toshi-sensei got up to in his free time, and she had no moral high ground to stand on. His relationship struggles were as deeply amusing to Kizumi as they were soul-crushing, considering her own misfortunes in the realm of romance.

What was far more interesting, however, was Toshi-sensei’s mention of the new Mizukage. "He’s a child, isn’t he?” she asked, her brow furrowing. "Made Kage after the last Kaguya disappeared. Makes you wonder what’s happening in that country, going through so many leaders in so few years, and landing on a teenager at the end of it all.”

At this point the sake was starting to make itself known in Kizumi’s system, so she slowed her drinking down, now preferring to sip at her cup instead of heartily knocking it back. She was a seasoned drinker, but no amount of experience could make up for just being smaller than Toshi-sensei; she could never hope to keep up with him in this regard.

"‘s good that you want to reconnect,” Kizumi said, leaning her head into her hand. "But y’know that ‘making up for lost time’ isn’t… really a thing, right? You can’t change what you did, and you can’t force a relationship. If Iruhi wants you in her life then that’s great, but whirlwinding through her life for a few days and then disappearing again is just going to ruin any goodwill you might’ve been able to earn. Staying in regular contact is going to be way more valuable to her now and go a lot farther in earning her trust, even if you can’t visit often.”

Kizumi sniffed, and took another sip. "Take that with a boulder of salt, though,” she added wryly. "I’m not exactly one to be giving out advice on maintaining relationships.”

WAR AND RELATIONSHIPS

Toshizou chuckled and shook his head. "Just gotta make sure they never meet." he started, only to laugh a bit louder. "I jest, I jest... It's just... I think I should think about actually having a family, for my daughter's sake." he admitted, although he didn't have much conviction in his tone. For someone who knew him as well as Kizumi did, it was clear he was forcing himself down that path, but that his heart was still not entirely into it; he was still too much of a manwhore to seriously consider settling down.

As the subject drifted to the upcoming Chuunin Exams, Kizumi mentioned the Mizukage, and Toshi's smile faded away completely, giving place to the stoic and stern expression that people generally associated with him. "The boy kage, is what I hear... I wonder, however. It can both mean that they are desperate and had no better option other than rely on a brat, or this brat is some incredible genius. If it's the later, than the Mist's silence is what I fear... The calm before the storm. And that's why I'm also going there. I want to know what's going on in the Land of Water." he admitted to her, not really afraid of sharing such delicate intel due to the trust he had in the Cloud kunoichi.

Toshi was still resisting the effects of the alcohol, but since he was not really slowing down on his drinking, it was but a matter of another bottle for him to start showing the effects of getting drunk. Leaving the more serious subject behind them, they went back to talk about his daughters. The woman seemed happy he was taking some action, but warned him about it, and her point was quite fair, he agreed with her and thus he nodded. "I'm trying to take it easy and go at her own pace. We went on a mission together, and I started training her every now and then. I know I can't expect things to be fantastic, and I know I'm busy, but I want to make sure to check in at least on a bi-weekly basis. It's the best I can do for now." he admitted, sighing deeply and pouring more sake for both of them.

When she mentioned he should take it with a boulder of salt, he chuckled and shook his head. "You know, I don't get how you struggle with that, I never did. You are not only an incredible shinobi, but a gorgeous woman. Perhaps the Cloud men are too soft?" he teased her, giving her a mischievous smirk.

A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

The boy kage is… food for thought. It’s a complicated situation that Kizumi pinned for later—she’s got no business stepping foot in Mizu no Kuni without due cause, and she’s got no real reason to be spectating the chuunin exams this time around. She could always write Toshi-sensei once they were done to see if he found anything interesting.

Kizumi knows he’s been drinking, because this is when he starts in on the flattery. She rolls her eyes, taking the compliment with a well, it’s true kind of a shrug and grin.

"You’re incorrigible, first of all,” she says, waving the man off. "All men are too soft, Toshi-sensei, they’re not for me. Besides, it’s damn hard for me to get a date with a good woman when you’re getting there first all the time.”

Right now she’s more focused on whatever cognitive dissonance is happening in Toshi-sensei’s brain. He’s being his very cool and charming usual self, yes, but his body language and his mouth are saying very different things.

"Okay, hold on, back up,” Kizumi said, gesturing emphatically with her now-empty sake cup. When that happened, she had no idea. Wasn’t she supposed to be slowing down? "I’m picking up on a couple of different things here, so hear me out. You’re committing to building this relationship with Iruhi, and you say you should think about settling down for her sake—but be honest with me, Toshi-sensei, you don’t want that.” She plonked the cup down and refilled it, chalking up her sake’s disappearance to a mishap. "And that’s fine. You don’t have to be married to be a good dad, and if being a good dad is what’s most important to you right now, then just—tackle that. If you end up meeting someone you want to marry, that’s great. But your romantic relationships shouldn’t really have any bearing on your relationships with your kids.”

Her expression grows suddenly stern, and she leans in, giving Toshizou a hard look. "They both had moms who were more present in their lives than you were,” she said bluntly. "They don’t need a new one.”

FAMILY

Toshizou laughed when she called him incorrigible, showing a signs he was getting a bit more tipsy with the drinking, but he had a good tolerance; he spent a lot of his free time drinking. He laughed a bit harder when she mentioned the fact that he was always interested in new women, and that made her life harder. "I mean, I don't mind sharing, if any of them caught your eye. I'm not the jealous type hahahahaha!" he said in a rather playful tone despite the fact that he was being quite honest about it; Toshizou didn't like the idea of a conventional relationship, he was far too detached to honestly feel like he could commit.

Just before the change of subject, noticing her empty cup, he promptly filled it up, doing the same for himself and chugging it down on the next second, while he listened to her words. When she called him out on not wanting that he paused, stared at her, blinked twice as the smile slowly faded away and then he sighed, quietly listening to the woman. She was wise, and he knew that, hence why he always valued her input throughout life, even though she called him sensei; in fact, Toshizou had learned just as much with her.

The man nodded and ran his hand through his white locks, staring at the ceiling for a moment, as he leaned back on his chair to the point it was standing on its back legs only. "You know what? You are absolutely right, Kizumi... Gosh, sometimes I wish I could have you here more often, you always know what to say." he admitted, chuckling lightly as a subtle smile slowly made its way into his feature. "I'm not cut for this, I don't think. Commitment, monogamy... But I do want to be a good father, and yes, I thought about giving them a 'family' of sorts, but that wouldn't be real... I would be forcing it, and it could do more harm than good." Toshizou paused and leaned back forward, his chair making thud noise when the front legs hit the floor again. His vermillion eyes looking for her one orb. "Now... I wonder if I'm still an academy student in regards to the challenges of family life..." he mused, shaking his head.

I don’t mind sharing, Toshi-sensei said, and there was nothing Kizumi could do about the violent flush that raced up her neck and cheeks. She swallowed back a strangled noise and said nothing—the idea of, uh, sharing one of Toshi’s partners was too much for her to handle just then. She coughed, cleared her throat, and drank more.

She watched Toshi consider what she’d said, and while it was something of a relief to hear him admit that she was right, she still had a lingering doubt in the back of her head. What if she wasn’t? He was taking her incredibly seriously, and if she dissuaded him from a path that would be good for both him and his family, then—

Kizumi sighed, and tried to brush that aside. He was a grown man; she was just offering her perspective. He could take it or leave it, and he chose to take it.

"Kids know when you’re forcing something,” Kizumi said pensively. "It was like that before I signed up for the academy, with my sister and I. Even though we fought constantly, we tried to get along in front of our little brother, but he always knew something was wrong.” She huffed, a quiet little laugh. "I mean, we were kids too, but still. Family’s family, right? Even if it’s shaped a little differently than normal.”

She met his gaze, and offered a sympathetic pat of his hand. "It’s not like it’s easy,” she said. "Being a good dad or sister or whatever takes just as much practice and training as anything else. I haven’t figured it out either, you know? My sister’s still pushing me to retire and move in with her and her kids, and I haven’t heard from my brother in ages. It’s okay if you’re not good at something right away, as long as you’re trying.”

If only she could take her own advice.

FATHERHOOD AND DEBAUCHERY

Indeed, kids knew when people were forcing a situation, which just made them even more of a hassle to deal with, no wonder he ended up avoiding the responsibility for so long. His job was so much easier for him, killing was so much easier for him. Toshizou's blade claimed the lives of hundreds of people, and he never lost a minute of sleep over that. His firm belief in his Nindo - Slay Evil Immediately - always pushed him forward, together with his enormous sense of duty towards his village and the Will of Fire. There was no hesitation, no second guessing, if someone dared to stand in the way of the Leaf, they needed to be promptly eliminated, and that determination was ever stronger in regards to Missing-nin. He was a renowned missing-nin hunter, and he single handed dismantled a strong organization known as the Kuroseki.

When she mentioned they were kids once, he chuckled, lowering his head and chugging down his cup once again. "Maybe... But was I really a child once? It feels surreal. I never truly felt like a child. I killed for the first time when I was nine years old, and I always knew what I had to do, which path I would follow. I guess... Kizumi..." he sighed, pouring more sake in their cup, his cheeks slightly red from the alcohol, but his thoughts still quite clear. "I have so much trouble dealing with my daughters because I can't find in my heart anything to relate to their childhood... Normal children... They are almost alien to me. It's weird... And even those I took under my wing and trained, they were more like me, ready to become a tool for the village, a living weapon, an unbreakable force. When I look at Iruhi, I see a child who wants to do her best, but still a child, and Tokaku... She is more inclined to follow the path of the shinobi, she wants to be more like me, but I wonder if she will be able to one day." he shrugged.

He wasn't disappointed in them, that much was clear. Still, he seemed to be done with this subject, and waved his hand. "But that's okay, I will figure out eventually. Now... Back to what I was saying..." and then he gave her a mischievous smirk. "Perhaps I should be your wingmen... Find some hot lady to give you some sugar! Hehehehe!" he teased her.

A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

There was so much that Kizumi wanted to say to Toshi-sensei in this moment. Her heart swelled with sympathy, a true ache resounding through her chest as he glossed over his own childhood, described his trouble relating to his daughters. Things like: it was good that his daughters’ upbringing was so different. Of course he was extremely accomplished, but those accomplishments at such a young age had hurt him deeply in turn.

It was good that his daughter had the ability to enjoy their youth and be children in the way that Toshi-sensei himself felt like he never could. That freedom and innocence were wonderful things, and even if he couldn’t relate to their experiences, it was worthwhile to try. That, in theory, there could be such a thing as a work-life balance; he could hang up his headband at the end of the day to spend time with his kids doing ‘normal’ childhood things, and be no less of a man or weaker of a shinobi as a result.

But Toshi-sensei was apparently done with this conversation, so Kizumi swallowed her words back with a cupful of sake, and breathed out heat and stifled emotion. She didn’t want to push him on it; she didn’t want to sour the mood.

When he changed the subject quickly and clumsily, for a long moment she just looked at him, pensive. Then she flipped a switch and waved him off with a dramatic gesture, smoothly matching his change in energy and allowing the topic to change without comment.

"No way,” she said, and smacked her chest to try to make the burning sensation of sake going down her throat pass faster. "No way you could be my wingman, anyone you try to chat up for me is going to be horribly charmed by you first. No, if I ever want a chance with someone I gotta go to a whole different continent.”

INTERRUPTION

Kizumi was first to turn down his offer and that made him laugh out loud, leaning against his chair and shaking his head. She was exaggerating, of course, but there was still a bit of truth in her words. However, Kizumi also sold her self short almost all the time in that regard, and that was something he sincerely wanted to help her with. "You are too unfair with yourself, Kizumi-chan." he said, leaning back towards the table and winking at her, using the honorific to tease the woman. "So... Why don't you at least try? Come with me to the Leaf. We can hangout, you, me and Kurei. Have a good time, share some interesting stories, and if I can't wingman you, maybe Kurei can help with that. So..." and he paused, pouring a bit more sake in their cup, and downing it immediately. "What do you say?"[/ b] he asked her, with a large smile on his face.

Just as he said that, two women, around their mid 20s or early 30s came out of a room on the second floor of the bar; the place had some rooms for travelers to stay, due to the city being a Port and temporary home for many people. They were barely dressed, and had a blanket over them. "Toshizou-sama, are you coming back to bed soon?" they asked, prompting the man to look back at them with a smile on his face. "I will be there soon, you guys can start without me." and as he said that, the two of them giggled lightly and enthusiastically headed back into the room, playfully asking him to come before closing the door. He chuckled lightly and shook his head, staring back at Kizumi.

"Sorry about that. Where were we?" he asked, his mind clearly hazy from the alcohol.

"You can train a dog with food. You can buy a person with money. But there isn't a man alive that can put down the Will of Fire. Some things will never change. The Will of Fire will never be extinguished"

A HEART'S A HEAVY BURDEN

It wasn’t being unfair if she were simply accurately assessing a track record. Evidence was evidence whether it was kind or not, and the evidence was fully stacked against Kizumi having any game whatsoever. It was fine, she told herself; she’d get a cat or something. One that could feed itself.

Still, there was something appealing about his offer, and in the worst case scenario she’d end up having a good time with an old friend. No harm done, really, and she was curious about spending time with Kurei at length; she’d only ever met the woman in passing before.

Before she could respond, though, two incredibly scantily clad women emerged from the second floor rooms clearly in search of Toshi-sensei. Kizumi had barely looked at them before she had her eyes firmly fixed on a blank stretch of wall a bit to the side of Toshi’s ear, a violent flush spreading across her cheeks. Toshi sent them off, and Kizumi scrubbed her face with both of her hands.

"Alright, alright,” Kizumi said, throwing up her hands in defeat. "You win. I have to go through to Tea Country for a mission, but I’ll stop by the Leaf on my way back, deal?” His good humor was infectious. If he really was so convinced that she was selling herself short, then maybe—well, maybe he really could lend her a hand. At the very least he could tell her what she was doing wrong. Clearly he was doing it all very right.

"You should go,” she said, waving him off with a grin. "You’ve got important business to attend to, and I should catch a nap before I head out again.”
