''Chakra control?'' Ichi groaned, hoping they could just have used their strength to power on through the training exercise. As sensei reminded them he possessed the legendary Byakugan, Ichi let out a quiet, ''Woah'' followed by even quieter ''that's kinda gross.'' at the mention of being able to see inside flesh. They wondered if it ever ruined sensei's appetite if they used the ability before dinner or something like that.

''Flesh is like, the everything.'' Ichi nodded confidently at Hiroro's question, totally not aware of how accurate or inaccurate their answer was. They hadn't really mulled it over it was just something they had blurted out to contribute to the noise of the discussion as they were headed for the platforms. When they finally did make it and Ichi got tied up they were tempted to test the strength of the ropes, but decided against it.

''I got Miroru-chan. What a pain, she's super fast.'' Ichi muttered to themselves as they tried to device some kind of strategy ahead of time. Their clever strategems ranged from 'I just destroy the ropes outright because I'm awesome' to 'I master the technique in two seconds and Miroru never even stood a chance... Because I'm awesome'. That's how they saw it go down!

Ichi squirmed for a moment to try and give Hiroro a thumbs up, but settled for shouting back. ''You too, Hiroro-chan!'' they paused and looked around to see if they could spot Itsuki. Despite the boy having been quiet, Ichi knew he had joined team B alongside them. ''Itsuki-kuuuun! KICK ASS!'' Ichi shouted, no, almost demanded as they shouted out in no particular direction, but just raised their voice in the hopes that Itsuki would hear it. Finally, as they were already caught up in the shouting, Ichi turned their attention back to where Miroru would be starting and shouted even louder so that she would hear them.

''Miroru-chan! I bet you can't do the course in 2 minutes!'' Ichi giggled mischievously. Surely she would be so nervous about proving them wrong that she would trip over herself on the obstacle course. After all, being a ninja was all about clever tricks and stuff!

Shigure was taken aback by Hiroro's question about how her legs would look from the inside, prompting him to scratch the back of his head in mild discomfort. Ichi, although he thought his ability to see inside their bodies was a bit gross, went on to explain that flesh was everything. "Not that it matters, but if it will get your minds at ease... I can kind of choose what I'm seeing through. It can be a layer of cloth, or just the skin, or muscle, or even inside your bones. There's no obstacle that can block the power of my Byakugan." and upon saying that, he glanced over towards Itsuki and gave the Yamanaka boy a large smile, as if he was trying to silently say 'I know you have something hidden inside your mouth', but he didn't call the boy out on that, so he could interpret it in whichever way he pleased. With all the members of Team B properly tied up, it was about time for them to get started. Miroru, Jiro and Makoto - Itsuki's opponent, and a member of the Inuzuka clan - all seemed ready to get started, so there was no use on delaying them any further. "Ready, set... Go!" he exclaimed, pressing the button on his stopwatch so that he could keep track of the time limit. His Byakugan remained active, and it was the reason why he could proctor such a large group in a challenge like this. Jiro would start trying to pass the obstacles, but the young boy was clearly having some trouble with it. He was better at chakra control than most of his peers, and had a talent for ninjutsu, but he was quite lacking on his physical capabilities, which gave Ichi quite the time advantage. Makoto, on the other hand, was doing a pretty good job at avoiding the first obstacles, leaping from platform to platform. As a member of the Inuzuka clan, he was in peak physical condition and the way his body moved was quite unusual, but in a positive way for this challenge, which meant that Itsuki was rather pressed for time. "So what if it seems hopeless? If it were me, I still wouldn't give up. Embrace your dreams. And, whatever happens, protect your honour as a Shinobi, for the price of freedom is steep." Miroru fidgeted excitedly, watching the proceedings on the platforms anxiously, trying to make sure she didn't miss the chance to get started. And when Ichi taunted her? She grinned wickedly to herself. They were gonna regret that! For the moment, she held her ground, still tossing that rock high over head, apparently to occupy herself, until...

"Go!"

Miroru took a half step forward... and did nothing as her classmates bolted into the obstacle course. Did nothing as her rock plummeted down straight towards her head. Did nothing as it smacked her head hard enough to fold her over in half-

-and explode into smoke as the log from halfway down the course fell to the ground where she'd been standing!

The redhead pelted forwards through the latter half of the course, the entire first half skipped by virtue of her little Kawarimi trick, scrambling wildly to eat up the course between her and the end of the course where she could start clambering up to interrupt Ichi and their big ol' mouth!!!


She also made sure to note any tricks or traps involved with the second half. She'd probably not get away with her trick a second time, so she'd need to clear the whole course next, and without the benefit of having run the first half before. All the intel she could gather was vital!

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

[Utsuki Hiroro]

Hiroro gave a soft "Ohhh" at Ichi's confirmation about the definition of 'flesh', and then tipped her head at Hyuga-sensei's explanation about how his special vision worked - one ear flopping over. Grinning broadly, she considered teasing Hyuga-sensei about looking under peoples clothes... but that sounded kinda mean and would distract from the lesson. Or at least she thought it would sound mean. The only times she ever really heard anyone talk about that kind of thing was when she overheard adults talking about 'perverts', whatever that was, or when some older kids would talk about things like that.

Not that she ever listened in on conversations on purpose! She just had really good hearing and couldn't help it.

More importantly, though, she needed to try and escape using the rope escape technique! Eyes scrunched shut, ears twitching now and then, Hiroro stayed very still as she tried to focus on her chakra. A tiny pool in her core, flowing in and out around different spots in her body. Tongue poking out in concentration, she tried to guide the chakra up into one arm - focusing on her left shoulder. Wiggling that shoulder, the ropes didn't seem to want to budge or lose their grip. Giving a sigh and letting her chakra go back to normal, she started over from scratch. Visualize and direct, this time to her other shoulder with similar results.

"Heck."

Hiroro murmured softly, but she didn't give up - she was just going to have to try her legs or something next.

Yamanaka Itsuki

Itsuki had a relatively average chakra pool, but he had excellent control for someone of his age. In fact, chances were he had better control over it than some adults, which meant that he had a better chance of completing this task than any of the others in his group. Really, the important question for him was which part of his body did he try and free first? If he could untie his hands then he could technically use them to help him free the rest of his body, even if that was against the spirit of the task. On the other hand, if he went for his legs first, he could at least try to outrun his pursuer, even if he didn't get his arms free.

It would leave him hard pressed to defend himself... but the objective of this 'mission' was escape, not combat so legs first seemed the correct way to do things. His pursuer was an Inuzuka, and Makoto-kun was not only fast, but his more animalistic way of moving at speed was well suited for the obstacle course he was running. That meant that Itsuki had to be quick, had to be smart.

Shigure-sensei hadn't really explained how to do the rope untying technique, so it was up to him to figure out what worked for him. The most logical method in his mind was simple, the weak spot of the bindings were obviously the knots, so he had to target them. Focusing his chakra carefully through his body, he found the knot holding his legs captive and started to work at it. Using his energy like fingers, or the foot of a snail, he slowly forced the strands of rope to move against each other, first loosening and then untying the knot. He did find himself still rather tangled in the ropes, and it took him longer than anticipated to get them off of his legs, but eventually he did, leaving himself free to run if he had to.

He glanced up, trying to figure out where his opponent was while also working on freeing his hands in the same way. This was working... though perhaps not as quickly as he would have liked. He didn't try to run yet though, he wanted Makoto-kun to think he had more time than he actually did. A false sense of security could make it so the Inuzuka didn't push himself too hard, giving Itsuki more time to flee. Obaa-sama had drilled him on extraction skills since he was a kid after all.

Ichi grinned wickedly as the game began proper. Mastering a new jutsu? How hard could it be, it didn't even involve using hand seals, the bane of Ichi's existence. Although they had to admit... The ropes were awfully tight, as was to be expected if the enemy took you prisoner. It wasn't supposed to be easy, but Ichi liked the challenge. Just meant it would look more impressive when they broke out in mere seconds! Ichi spent their first few seconds pumping themselves up for the escape before shouting at the top of their lungs.

''HERE WE GO! ROPE ESCAPE TECHNIQUE!!''

With all their muscles tensing at once Ichi began straining against the ropes with pure force, absolutely zero chakra applied, nothing but just their muscles. The idea being they were going to rip the ropes open and escape like one of those cool strong characters in their comic books at home.

Of course none of that actually happened.

Ichi continued fighting and straining with brute force until their face turned red from exertion and they were forced to take a break. Panting and heaving, the young ninja-to-be fell over and looked up at the sky.

''These ropes are tough, how's anyone supposed to be able to escape this, Hyuuga-sensei.'' They complained to themselves, unsatisfied that their solution, which was never going to work, didn't work. ''Wait, what did sensei say earlier? Something about becoming flexible by using your chakra...'' Ichi steeled themselves with another grin, confidently shouting, ''Chakra go!''

Of course this didn't get them very far either, but they were starting to get the gist of the exercise.

"ties that bind". "No matter how many people you may lose, you have no choice but to go on living." ROUND 2: START The obstacle course proved to be quite challenging to most students. Jiro was having trouble with the initial platform jumping, so he took a little time to cover that, but once he got the gist of it, the young boy managed to increase his speed and move to the second stage, where they had to leap from one rope to another without falling. Not being very physically strong, he also struggled overcoming that one challenge, but eventually he managed to get to the final stage: climbing to the platform where Hiroro was. The young Utsuki was struggling to use her chakra to make her joints a bit more flexible, and trying to figure out what was going on did take too long. Closer to the end of this run, Hiroro would start figuring it out, but it was too late, Jiro had climbed to where the girl was and smiled triumphant. "I win!" he said with confidence, and Shigure nodded, clocking his time as 2min58sec, just short of the time limit. Miroru used the replacement technique to essentially skip the first part of the obstacle course, and would then proceed through the ropes, which she did with some struggle. This part required upper body strength, and although the young girl was fast, her strength was but ordinary, but she had time on her side. Once she got past this part, she would start climbing to the platform. Ichi had trouble understanding the concept of the technique at first, but then he remembered what Shigure had said before, and was finally using the technique as he should. His body started to wiggle out of the ropes, but Miroru suddenly appeared before him, clocking an impressive 1min49sec. The young Uchiha was the first one to get there. Shigure shook his head, chuckling lightly. "That was smart. Still... That made Ichi-kun's life a bit harder." he thought to himself. Makoto, being an Inuzuka, was having an easier time than most during the obstacle track, the young girl had both speed and strength, so she made it to the climbing stage of the challenge before all other students, save for Miroru, who had managed to skip a whole section of the course. However, Itsuki was having the best progress among the tied up students due to his enhanced chakra control. With his legs free, he could run, but he decided to wait and lure his opponent into a false sense of security. Still, Makoto was giving it her very best and with her claws, she managed to climb it rather fast. By the time Itsuki tried to run, his opponent had arrived at the platform, finding him. "Got you, Itsuki-kun!" she said with a smile. Makoto had arrived at the platform at 2min07sec. Now that all students had finished their first try, Shigure would speak up again. "Alright everyone. Good job. Think about what you did right and wrong while I prepare you for the second round, ok?" he said as he went back to where the members of Team B were and started tying them up again. "Remember, the key to this technique is using your chakra to make your body more flexible." he explained. This time, the tied up students would have an easier time, but so would the ones on Team A, as they were more familiarized with the obstacle course. When everything was ready, Shigure have the sign. "Round 2. Start!" the instructor exclaimed. "So what if it seems hopeless? If it were me, I still wouldn't give up. Embrace your dreams. And, whatever happens, protect your honour as a Shinobi, for the price of freedom is steep." "As expected of Akimichi-san! Already well on the way to mastering the new technique- but not far enough!" Miroru crowed as she clambered on top of the pillar and stood proudly, feeling for the moment like the leader everyone in the Justice Scouts pretended she was! "Don't worry, though, my fellow scouting comrade." She winked. "I'll take it easy on ya." As Shigure reset the ropes, she cackled, "I won't CHEAT in round two~!" before toppling off the platform to clamber back down to the ground and head for the starting point again!

The class knew her well enough that she wasn't the sort to ACTUALLY break the rules. Calling her clever adaptations cheats was her way of preserving the pride of her classmates, giving them an easy out so they didn't feel inadequate just because she'd found this loophole or that one. She didn't scratch along the limits of the law because she wanted to make anyone else look bad. She just wanted to be clever and useful, and that demanded accommodations when she wasn't going to play by the strictest interpretation of the rules!

"Good job, everyone! Great hustle! We're gonna have to do it again if we're gonna keep Team B on their toes! Everyone ready?"

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

[Utsuki Hiroro]

When Jiro climbed up and declared victory, Hiroro's response was to laugh and reply "Aww dang, I was just about to get it too! You're fast!" before everything was reset for round 2.

Like before round 1, Hiroro called out a quick "Good luck!" to her friends and classmates on Team B before Round 2 began. This time she had a lead on what she needed to do, immediately sticking her tongue out in concentration as she visualized her chakra going from her core and down into her legs. From her legs, into her joints, and then wobbling and wiggling all about to try and get her legs free. Slowly but surely she was making progress, with most of the difficulty now being figuring out how to move her legs to make the ropes loosen up.

Idly, she wondered if shorter legs would make it easier or harder.

One more wiggle seemed to do the trick, getting one leg free and the second leg following suit shortly after. Grinning excitedly, Hiroro sat upright on the platform with her legs criss-crossed under her as she turned her attention towards figuring out how to free her arms. Twisting her torso this way and that seemed to be doing something, and her tall ears were straight up atop her head as she listened for Jiro's approach. She just needed a bit more time!

If Hiroro heard Jiro approach the platform she was going to let out a shriek-laugh and hop to her feet and attempt to run away in the opposite direction - immediately faceplanting off the side of the platform if left to her own clumsy devices.

Itsuki pouted slightly as he was 'captured' before he could escape, the young Yamanaka sliding to a standing position as soon as Makoto had appeared into view, showing her that he could have run away if he had really wanted to. He brought his hands up to his face as though to wipe it, palming the little tool that he had kept in his mouth so he could speak. "You get one Makoto-chan, but you won't get me again! I just didn't want you to fail the class, that's all" he declared, nose up in the air while giving her a cheeky grin to show that he was only joking. He could have managed it if he had been up against someone slower, but her parkour skills were obviously going to give him a run for his money.

"If I get away next time, I get to play with your puppy next lunch time. If I don't, I'll look after your puppy next time" he stated, a very serious and important bet offered. Unfortunately, any further super important dares and bragging was shortly interrupted by the arrival of Shigure-sensei who was resetting the activity for attempt number two. Itsuki made a mental note to tease Ichi about 'chakra go' later on as well, having heard them call it out during their attempt to break out of the ropes. Ichi definitely was more focused on smacking things around, and what he'd seen of other Akimichi in training, it'd get really scary later on.

Hmm... note to self, maybe avoid getting bopped more often...

Soon enough he would find himself tied up once again, trying to figure out just how using chakra to make your joints more flexible could get you out of ropes. Surely at least some ways of binding would restrict that, right? Maybe he needed to apply that alongside what he was doing before, rather than just trying to do what he had been. Readying himself, Itsuki waited for the instruction to start, and when it came he got to work.

This time he started at his arms, an area where it was easier to manipulate his chakra, and also a spot with more joints to twist. Channelling chakra through his wrists, his fingers, his elbows, the young Yamanaka contorted his body with an intense expression of concentration on his face, the energy also teasing at the knots while he did so in an attempt to loosen them enough to slip out of. He didn't need to untie them, just give himself enough room... to... there!

Suppressing the urge to cry out in victory, his arms slid free, his torso following moments later. His attention quickly turned to his legs, chakra making it easier to twist and contort even further as he slid the limbs out of the ropes. Knowing that his time was limited, Itsuki quickly made to slip himself off the platform, hoping that he had managed to outwit his classmate this time.

''Whaaat, how are you so fast Miroru-chan.'' Ichi pouted as their friend climbed up the pillar. They were secretly a little proud of her, but had to push celebrating her achievements aside to focus on their own growth. They wanted to graduate alongside all of their friends after all!

Ichi's jaw dropped as Miroru mentioned cheating, only causing Ichi's face to redden with exasperation and frustration. ''I KNEW IT! YOU DID SOMETHING CRAFTY YOU!'' They kicked their legs lightly as they threw their little tantrum, but quickly calmed down again, receding back into a grumpy pout. ''I won't be bested so easily..''

When Ichi was tied up again they could've sworn the ropes felt tighter than in the first round. No use worrying about that though, Miroru was gonna be here in probably less than two minutes so every precious second counted. Ichi wasted no time on trying to strongman through the ropes and immediately closed their eyes to better focus, as they distributed chakra through their body in an attempt to make themselves more flexible. Starting with their arms, Ichi was quick to get one arm free and as the round went on, seemed to be getting faster and faster at the technique.

When it came down to the final seconds, Ichi would either shriek in surprise if Miroru got the jump on them again, or clumsily leap off the platform to get away from their dastardly pursuer if they made it out of the ropes in time.

ONE MORE ROUND With the second starting, the students took their position, and once Shigure gave them their sign, they all started giving their very best. The second run of the obstacle course was easier for all members of Team A, as they had already conquered it once, but Team B was also getting more proficient at handling the ropes. Miroru decided not to use her tricky Substitution Technique this time, and Ichi was more determined than ever to beat his friend. With the proper focus, the boy started to make his body more flexible, starting with his arms, and once he got that one free, the rest was easier. Miroru was getting quite close as she conquered the obstacle course, and as she started climbing the platform, Ichi managed to escape the rope all but a second before Miroru got there, clocking 1min57secs. "Great job, Ichi-kun. Great execution of the Rope Escape Technique!" Shigure commended the boy. Hiroro was also doing a good job, wiggling as she managed to get some of the rope out of the way. Still, she wasn't quite there yet, and when she was almost free, Jiro landed on top of the platform, making a better time than before, at 2min23sec. "I win again! Hehe!" the young boy said with a large smile. Hiroro tried to run away, but instead, clumsy faceplanted off the side of the platform. "You are almost there, Hiroro-chan. Keep working on your chakra, I'm sure you will make it on the final round." he said with a firm nod. Makoto scoffed at Itsuki's declaration, but still smiled as the Inuzuka knew the boy was joking. With a firm nod, they accepted the challenge. "Alright. You hear that Saitou? Itsuki-kun will be looking after you!" he teased his classmate. As the second round started, Itsuki started using his chakra and having some success. However, Makoto was quite adept in physical challenges, and she managed to beat even Miroru's time, clocking an impressive 1min49secs, which granted her the victory on this round as well. "Oh, wow... That was rather fast, Makoto-chan. Now... Itsuki-kun, you are doing it correctly, you now just need to do it faster, ok?" he explained. The kids would have a short time to rest, with Miroru and Ichi completing the lessons, they were free to go. "You can watch if you want, or go home, up to you guys." the Hyuuga said. "So what if it seems hopeless? If it were me, I still wouldn't give up. Embrace your dreams. And, whatever happens, protect your honour as a Shinobi, for the price of freedom is steep." Hiroro shrugged off her face-planting with a laugh, giving a cheerful "You're too fast!" in response to Jiro's cheering. The firm nod and encouragement from Hyuga-sensei got her attention, and she nodded back with her usual broad grin plastered across her face. She was pretty confident that she had it figured out now - the chakra part was hard, but figuring out the wiggly movements to shift the ropes just right was the slow part. She just needed to figure out how to do it faster now.

During the break, she made the rounds hopping from classmate to classmate.

"Good job, Ichi!" with a big thumbs up, and a "You too, Roru-chan!" before bounding away to offer an encouraging "We'll get it this time, 'Suki-kun!" and so on - doing the same for all of her classmates, even if she was only particularly good friends with the first three. Eventually she approached Hyuga-sensei himself while sipping from the gourd around her neck, one hand going up above her head and failing to be taller than her ears as she asked. "Hyuga-sensei, can we see how you do the rope escape thingy?"

She wasn't trying to cheat or anything - she just wanted to watch someone else's movements to see if she could get any useful tips from it for her third round.

Itsuki grumbled a little bit at being caught out again, clearly he was unfairly matched against someone who was much better suited to their side of the activity. He didn't actively complain of course, he knew very well that the life of a shinobi was unfair, but still against anyone else he would have gotten away with it last round for sure. Oh well, no use crying over spilt cow, so it was time to try his hand at it again and make sure that he got it right this time. He knew how to do it now, and it really was quite simple to replicate, he just had to speed it up this time to make it work a bit better.

He reached out to give Hiroro a pat on the head but didn't say anything in response to her encouragement, too busy practicing the movements of his chakra to be able to respond to her verbally. He wanted to make sure he was ready with the jutsu now, somewhat frustrated with himself for not picking it up quicker. He was used to getting a grasp on jutsu faster than Ichi, and his pride was deflated somewhat at being behind his taller friend. It wasn't their fault, but it definitely bothered him.

Maybe he was too busy worrying about the whole competition aspect of the lesson? If he cared less about that then he would be able to better forcus on speeding up his use of the jutsu. Situational awareness could come later, for the moment getting the jutsu right seemed more important. Instead of taking a break as suggested by Shigure-sense, Itsuki sat himself down and continued to practice moving his chakra around, getting a feel for the way he would need to manipulate his body in order to achieve victory.

He refused to lose a second time.

THE LAST ROUND Hiroro was a good sport even though the young Utsuki had lost two of the three rounds, and she congratulated her friends who had succeeded, as well as motivated the young Yamanaka, who was also struggling a bit with the technique. Still, looking for further tips on how to perform it, she asked if Shigure could demonstrate it and the Hyuuga shook his head. "Unfortunately not. This is something you guys need to learn for yourselves. You see... All of our bodies are different, so what works for me will not necessarily work for you, but you are almost there, just keep on doing your best, okay?" he said with a gentle smile on his face as he lightly tapped on the girl's head. Itsuki chose to remain quiet and focused, so it seemed like they were ready for the final attempt. Shigure would then go back to his initial position, wait until everyone else was ready and then give the sign. "Ready, set... Go! Give it your best, guys!! I believe in you!" he said with a rather enthusiastic tone. He knew they had it in them, and they were not going to fail, still, their colleagues were not willing to go easy on them either, so they were doing their very best at overcoming the obstacle track as well.
