It was a big boom. The sounds of chaos cast clear over the dark waves of nighttime, screams echoing so much farther than he thought they would have. Hopefully the kids would be able to tune it out.
He had blown through a lot of chakra with that final maneuver; if it had taken him any longer to get back to the ship he might not have even been able to maintain water-walking. He was damp with mist and sea-salt spray when he hopped up and hauled himself back up to the deck of the ship, heaving with effort.
Kyoko slipped up to his side. Automatically, instinctively, he reached to pull her into a one-armed hug, squeezing her shoulders briefly in an unspoken gesture of fraternal affection. She was tapping him in to talk to the kids, which—honestly, he thought, giving the pair a once-over, they seemed to be doing better than he expected. These weren’t shivering, frightful babies that they’d rescued; shy, yes, unsure of themselves and what was going on, but there was something stalwart in each expression.
"Hey,” Daichi said, kneeling down to get to kid-height, on eye level with each of them. "I’m Daichi. That’s my sister, Kyoko—we were sent from Kirigakure to help you guys out, and deal with the bastards that kidnapped you. Can you tell me your names, where you’re from?”
He knew generally that they were from those new settlements in the archipelago, but knowing exactly who to return the kids to would be a different story.
"You did a really good job,” he said, grinning, clapping a hand on each of the kids’ shoulders. "I mean it. Those pirates were nasty, and it took a lot of guts to go off with Kyoko, and I bet there’s other kids out there just like you, in the same spot you were in, who weren’t half as brave—who need more help. You could, if you want. It’s what we do.”
