As the first rays of dawn began to illuminate the tranquil streets of Amegakure, a young Susanō by the name of Akirei stirred from his slumber. He knew that today was the day - the day that he would take the next step on his journey to becoming a Chūnin. And yet, as he rose from his bed and stretched his limbs, he couldn't help but feel a sense of reluctance. For today's training would focus on mastering the water surface walking and tree climbing techniques, skills that Akirei felt were redundant for someone with his unique abilities.

After all, he was not like normal people. He possessed the power to morph his body into paper, allowing him to fly with ease. So why would he need to learn how to walk on water or climb trees? It all seemed rather pointless to him. Nevertheless, Akirei knew that the rules were the rules. If he wanted to advance to the rank of Chūnin, he had to master these techniques, no matter how trivial they may seem.

So, with a resigned sigh, he gathered his things and set off towards the park where the training would take place. Arashi Teien was a rare oasis of tranquility in the bustling city of Amegakure, a place where the strict "no fighting" policy allowed for peaceful and focused training. As Akirei arrived at the park, he couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of his surroundings. No matter how many times he visits this place, it never gets old. The small forest and cobbled paths lined with flowers were a sight to behold. He took a deep breath and steeled himself for the task at hand.

The weather was perfect for training, with a gentle breeze and the sun shining just enough to provide warmth without being too overbearing. Akirei settled into a quiet corner of the park and began to practice the water surface walking technique, his feet skimming the pond's surface with delicate steps. But, as he had expected, his initial attempts were unsuccessful, and he stumbled into the water, sinking halfway in before his reflexes kicked in and he spread his paper wings to soar back into the air.

It felt like cheating, but he didn't care. He was not going to let a silly exercise ruin his day. After all, his unique abilities gave him an advantage, and he was not afraid to use them. With a grin, he resumed his training, this time hovering just above the surface of the water, letting his feet touch it only lightly. He felt the chakra flowing through him, and the sensation of gliding over the water was exhilarating.

However, he soon realized that his attempt was futile. He wasn't truly learning as he was relying on his hijutsu, Dance of the Shikigami, to partially float. "I need to stop relying on my flight technique." he muttered to himself, but breaking this habit would prove to be challenging. Floating, or flying was pretty much ingrained in him since he was a Susanō, it was a part of his identity. He wondered if seeking advice from someone else might help him overcome this obstacle.

[Jinjōi Chiyo]

Arashi Teien was a quiet place.

Full of Zen, pristine, no fighting allowed. Chiyo would rarely find herself in such a place. Usually, she preferred the training grounds, when she would be allowed to swing her blade to her leisure, and challenge others to mock duels. However, the girl was here for a different reason. Clad in her samurai-like kimono of dark purple color, with a turquoise sash, she sat in a lotus position, under a tree, in front of a pond. Practicing chakra control. She needed it, if she were to succeed in those one-handed seals Junichi-senpai showed her.

This time, the girl did not bring her sword around. Instead, she kept folding her hands together into handseals. Eyes closed. Nothing happened whenever her hands came together. She broke off the jutsu at the last moment. Letting herself feeling the flow of the chakra, but not expending it. Wanting to spare enough. Last time the girl used her chakra willy-nilly, she lost it all within a few moments! This time, she would not make the same mistake.

As Chiyo practiced, she suddenly heard a loud splash. Like a bird falling into water, the glade preventing her from taking flight. A big bird, too. Annoyed, she opened an eye, and what she saw was ... a boy. He struggled keeping himself above the water glade, and had these weird paper-like wings on his back. 'Hmph. Some 'stolen jutsu', no doubt.' - she thought to herself. 'Stolen jutsu' - is how she referred to kekkei genkai. Among many other derogatory terms. Chiyo observed the boy's failures for a little while, before standing up, and walking to the water glade.

"You're noisy." - the girl stated plainly, being in full view and hearing of the fancy-clothed boy, who hardly looked older than she was.

"What are you trying to do, anyway?"

As the young Shikigami struggled to keep himself from plunging into the pond, a voice shattered the peaceful silence of the garden, the speaker questioning his actions from a distance. Though the tone was blunt and impolite, Akirei was hardly bothered, having faced far worse in his life. 「It's fine.」 He muttered under his breath, exhaling a long sigh as he glanced at the source of the sound.

It was a girl roughly the same age as him, with the same height, body frame, and hair color. It was indeed a rare sight to encounter someone his age in the Garden of Storm. Despite its name, the tranquil spot strictly forbade any form of violence or intense activity, discouraging most youngsters from lingering in its confines. The diligent and disciplined tended to train in other training grounds, while the spoiled and idle clustered around the city centers. Was the girl a peculiar sort of outlier, or was she, like him, here to hone her chakra control in the peace of this secluded haven?

Unprepared for company, Akirei had not donned his usual mask, a mistake he was now regretting as he sized up the stranger with newfound wariness. Before he makes any response to the stranger's inquiry, Akirei swiftly crafted a paper mask from his paper manipulation ability, covering his upper face to hide his insecurity. "Just...trying to walk on water." he replied with his usual soft tone.

'It is just like Ren-sensei told me. His blood is holding him back.'

Chiyo heard of the Susano clan. People who could turn themselves into paper. She found it odd that such a clan would find refuge in a place where there rained all the time. Paper could get soggy. They were like all the other clans, nonetheless. Rich and powerful, and very conceited, no doubt. The village did value their precious special bloods more than the regular shinobi. Despite the latter's infinite capacity for innovation. 

"Hum. A person of paper, shoehorned into using paper. No wonder you are struggling."

The girl shrugged, as she walked closer towards the glade of the water in front of herself. Touching the water with the tip of her shoe. She heard of the technique this one attempted, before. The Art of Water Surface Walking. It was an advanced technique for genins. It required very apt control of one's chakra. Academy students like herself weren't supposed to try and learn it, yet. But with how much this fellow was having trouble, it made Chiyo think that she couldn't do much worse!

"When all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail, huh?" - the girl tilted her head to the side. "Maybe you shouldn't rely on your clan things so much."

The girl watched the water go in circles, away from her foot. She then formed her hands together, to help channel chakra. She did not try and run into the water just yet, no. Instead, she focused on one foot, and tried to balance it out on the surface. it felt like standing on a very slippery bubble.

Despite his slight dislike of the girl's rudeness, the young Shikigami could not deny that there was some truth to her words. However, as mentioned, he was honed his whole life to master his clan's hijutsu, and it was difficult to not rely on it. "It is like telling a bird not to flap its wings.” He said with a neutral tone. He then spread his white paper wings to bring himself closer to the ground surface as he was feeling uncomfortable being weighed down by the waterlogged parts of his pants.

He sighed as he dried his pants with a gentle breeze of wind generated from his palm. He longed for an affinity for fire release, but it was not in the cards for him. For now, he would have to rely on his wind release…

While waiting for his pants to dry, the young Shikigami sat near the pond to watch the girl attempt the same technique. Although her execution wasn't perfect, he couldn't help but admire her progress. She managed to strike a good balance and stand on the surface of the pond, showcasing impressive chakra control for someone her age.

As the kunoichi was still focusing on balancing her weight on the water's surface, Akirei immediately gave her a light applause. "That's some great chakra control at your age." he praised. Perhaps it wasn’t really that bad to watch as a spectator as he realised he could learn a few by watching.

Chiyo replied. The analogy couldn't work better for what was going on here! A bird having trouble walking. Waterwalking, really. Once more proving Ren-sensei's words true. Still she felt a bit sorry for him because of that. And he didn't seem like the type to flaunt the undeserved wealth of the clan around. Maybe she shouldn't be hostile. That impression Chiyo got was only reinforced when the fellow complemented her on her attempt. Despite she had only put one foot on the water.

"Thanks! I'm just learning, though. My name's Chiyo! Jinjoi Chiyo. You're... one of those Susanoo folks, right?"

The girl sounded friendlier, now that she had received a compliment to her ability. It felt a bit unwarranted, though. She still did not master the ninjutsu, she was just ... testing the waters, literally! Whenever she let the pressure off of her foot on the ground, and that on the water, she felt her foot sinking deeper, until the surface tension was broken and she tunked her foot into the water, proper!

"Gah. Don't applaud it just yet. It's a work in progress! Probably better for you to practice in shallow water, though. Lest you want to drown or something. Paper wings can get soggy, right?"

With that, Chiyo pulled her foot out and tried to repeat the motion, with the other foot. If the paper-masked boy wanted to try it her way, he was welcome to do so!

The Shikigami was left speechless by Chiyo's clever response. It was surprising to see two young individuals at the age of twelve or something conversing like some seasoned poets, but he found it to be an interesting exchange nonetheless.

After a minute or two, his pants had finally dried up, and as Akirei stood up to resume his training, he was taken aback by Chiyo's sudden introduction. Realising he had yet to introduce himself, he apologised, "Forgive my manners. I am Akirei, and you're right. I am one of the paper folks."

Despite his polite response, there was a hint of bitterness in his tone that betrayed his polite character he was portraying. It was expected given his difficult upbringing, receiving little to no help from the clan or village. Kinship only exists if you were born in the right social stratum. The hardships he had faced as low-ranked Susano was something he would never forget.

Putting aside his negative memories, Akirei stepped onto the pond once again to continue his training. He smiled as he observed Chiyo testing the water like a kid, feeling a sense of weird companionship. When she invited him to do the same, he eagerly nodded in agreement, "Sounds great!"

[Jinjōi Chiyo]

For a little while, the two of them practiced their use of chakra, to try and walk on water.

Chiyo couldn't really progress above making her foot slightly float above it. Whenever she tried to rely on it, all she ended up doing was make a splash, as her foot went a dozen inches into the water. Soon enough, she felt her socks getting drenched. Making the girl pull her feet out of the water, and remove her shoes, along with her socks. 'Derp... Maybe I should have thought about that. Gonna be easier feeling chakra this way though, right?'

Sitting on the edge of the pond, she now rested both soles on the surface of the water, trying to balance them, and channeling chakra into both. Chiyo still did not know the jutsu, but it was ... kind of calming like this. And feeling the water react to chakra was a good exercise for trying to control it. Even in failure, she would still win in the end! Therefore, she thought, no challenge the world would throw at her would be impossible!

Briefly, though, Chiyo shot a few looks towards the other fellow, Akirei. Something about him and his presence still bothered her, though. Eventually, the girl was capable of putting a finger on what it was!

"Say... Why are you here?" - she asked, suddenly. "Shouldn't you be somewhere in the fancy Susanoo mansion? Surrounded by like ten teachers explaining to you how things work? Instead of watching me and all..."

Money talks, right? Being from a simple non-shinobi family, Chiyo had trouble getting any extra tutoring from her academy teachers. Clanfolk always surpassed her on account of having a private tutor or dozen. They even boasted about it. So, this kid's situation had to be the same, right?

Both of Akirei's feet were on the surface of the water, but it didn’t take long before the surface tension broke apart and he once again submerged his foot into the pond. But since he was testing it on the shallow part of the pond, he was able to resist his temptation of flying. He let out a deep sigh and slowly placed his feet once again onto the water surface. Just then, he noticed Chiyo drenching herself too. The sight of the clumsy kunoichi made him chuckle a little, which he quickly came to regret as it wasn't the most graceful of reactions. "I'm sorry." he said, feeling slightly embarrassed.

However, his momentary lapse of concentration caused him to lose his balance, and he fell into the pond once again. He managed to stabilise himself and resumed his practice. However, Chiyo's question made him lose focus once again. She was wondering why someone as privileged as him would spend time training alone here. 「 Fancy mansion? Private tutors?」 He wasn't wrong in assuming that most of the Susanō had access to better facilities and resources, but unfortunately, he wasn't part of the higher class.

His father had gone bankrupt and abandoned the family. He was raised by a poor single mother since he was a child, which is why he was training here. However, he couldn't just speak about it casually. When his legs fell into the pond again, he looked at his reflection on the water and gave a sad reply, "Well, I'm poor, that’s why."

But he refused to let his circumstances get him down. He took a deep breath and raised his head high up with pride, giving a light smile. "But that is not stopping me from getting stronger." He slowly stepped out of the pond and removed his drenched shoes. "Oh dear, perhaps I should do it barefoot too." he said, trying to make light of the situation.

"You, poor?"

Chiyo looked at the boy with disbelief. He wore nice clothes, and was part of the Susanoo clan. Was this some kind of a practical joke of some kind? What did clanspeople know of poverty? They were the ones whose lives Amegakure, or any other village, really, cherished the most! She was very... skeptical.

"Aren't you like... part of the village's richest clan? Or are you 'poor' by their standards?"

'Which would probably still be richer than most of us...' - Chiyo thought to herself. Now with both of her feet bare, she attempted to stand on both of them now, on top of the water. Controlling chakra like two floating pads was exceedingly difficult. People usually did tree-climbing before waterwalking to learn the ninjutsu in question! Chiyo's goals weren't that, specifically. It's the feel of chakra, expelling and controlling it to achieve results, any results, that was important.

Or, at least, it was what she told herself.

Because as soon as she lost balance on one foot, the girl flailed and then flopped on the ground, right next to the pond. "Oof..." - the girl groaned and sat up. Maybe standing was too difficult to try, so far. Hearing a chuckle from the side, she shot a sharp glare in that direction, and crossed her arms.

"No laughing! It's forbidden."

Her scepticism at his claim of being poor is evident in her expression. He couldn't blame her, really, given the Susanō clan's opulence and prestige in Amegakure. They were the founding clan of the village, had the police force named after them, and owned a towering building at the city centre. But Akirei's family did not benefit much from the clan. Thanks to his irresponsible father who abandoned the country, he and his mother were left to endure poverty and loneliness. They were the lowest ranked in the clan hierarchy.

"It's true," he answered. "I'm just poor." He didn't feel the need to explain further, as the memories of his difficult upbringing still weighed heavily on his heart. With a small sigh, he slipped off his shoes and leapt back onto the surface of the pond, the water rippling gently under his feet.

As Chiyo lost her balance and fell to the ground, Akirei couldn't help but feel a twinge of amusement. But he quickly stifled the laughter, asking with concern, "Are you okay?" He spread his paper wings and began to leap across the pond, moving with the grace and fluidity of a ballet dancer. His movements left behind only calm ripples in the water. It would have been easier to fly over, but Akirei was determined to make it look elegant.

It didn't take long for him to reach Chiyo, standing before her with his wings blocking the sun. "Need a hand?" he asked, extending his hand to help her up.

[Jinjōi Chiyo]

Chiyo was still on her knees, when she saw a shadow soaring over her. She looked up, briefly in awe, but that awe was soon replaced by a frown. The sight of the police tower came into view, even from way up here. 'Uh-huh. Poor, my rear...' - she thought, as Akirei landed in front of her, and offered her a hand, like some kind of divine savior. She batted at the hand, pushing it away.

"I can get up on my own, thank you." - Chiyo said, standing back up. She dusted herself off then, and looked back up at him, with a stern look in her eyes. "Don't seek to rob anyone of their struggles. Overcoming adversity is what makes people strong!"

Having said that, the girl returned to practicing standing in water. First foot in, then second one. She balanced on the balls of her feet, while her chakra served as cushion pads to stand on. Her hands were clamped together in a handseal, trying to control her chakra so that there was not too little or too much to stand on. But then, the girl started losing her balance. Undoing the handseal, she started flailing with both arms to not fall over!

"Ahhh! Ahhh! Aaaaa! Gyah!"

*Splash.*

She fell on her back, this time. Straight into water.

Akirei thought to himself as he watched Chiyo push away his offer of help. He couldn't decide whether he admired her independence or was a little frustrated by it. Having grown up in difficult circumstances himself, he knew the importance of being independent.

He understood that Chiyo was right in her belief that overcoming adversity made one stronger. After all, as the wise saying goes, "What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger." Wait... is this statement correct? Well, whatever, you get the gist.

Anyway, Akirei disagreed with the idea that everyone had to be strong. He believed that providing and accepting help were not signs of weakness, and that living in this world didn't always mean one had to be strong. It was a mindset he hoped to change someday, by making the world a better place for everyone.

Rather than expressing his opinions, Akirei simply nodded and watched as Chiyo fell into the water once again. The Shikigami adjusted his mask before retracting his paper wings back into his body. He then walked towards Chiyo and offered his help once more.

"You know, how about we overcome adversity together?" he said while struggling to maintain his balance on the water surface.

"Mrgrgr... Fiiiine~"

After flailing in the water for a while, Chiyo stopped, and saw a hand being offered to her again. She took it, and crawled out of the water, and onto the harder ground. Water was oozing from her pants, her long-sleeved komono, and her hair. A frog sat on the top of her head and said "ribbit", attracting attention to itself. The girl looked up, and the frog looked down, and the two stared at each other for a brief moment, before Chiyo grabbed it and threw it back into the water, with a splash.

"Ugh... should have stayed with my back towards the ground..." - she said, lifting her arms to the sides, and letting water ooze off of her sleeves. There was so much! Her fabrics just soaked it in within moments! She groaned, and grabbed one of the sleeves, starting to wring it out, and then doing the same with the other. It wasn't a quick process! 'Dammit... I cannot continue my training if I spend half my time getting my clothes dry!' - the girl thought, before looking at Akirei. An idea came to her mind.

"Hey... You fell into the water before, right? And used those wings of yours to dry yourself up? Mind doing the same to me? You said you wanted to help out!"
