Risa was in a bad mood. It seemed lately that most of her moods were bad moods, and she didn’t really know what to do about it. Her temper was on a hair-trigger; she’d even snapped at her dad the other day, and he look he’d given her was so sad and so disappointed that she immediately ran to her room and cried and cried and cried. Everything Kyoko-sensei said to her kept swirling in her brain like a thunderstorm; and that one boy had been so mean to her for no good reason, and every day she woke up and felt like she just wasn’t good enough. Wasn’t strong enough, wasn’t smart enough, wasn’t fast enough. Everything felt terrible and lonely and bad. Maybe she should’ve stayed with her mom, and never tried to be a shinobi at all. It was with this terrible tangle of thoughts occupying her mind that Risa dragged her feet to the training grounds. It was their lunch break, and maybe she should’ve just taken a break and eaten something, but she felt sick to her stomach and horribly restless. The weak are food to the strong. She had to be strong, at any cost. But then why did trying to be strong feel so terrible? Risa came to a total dead stop in front of a training dummy, and through muscle memory took up a basic fighting stance. And then she did nothing: instead, she was locked in place, staring down a wooden dummy, too many thoughts racing through her mind for her to be able to do anything at all.

The academy's bell rang, echoing through the halls and signaling the much-awaited lunch break. An and her classmates had already made plans earlier in the day to venture outside and find a pleasant spot to enjoy their midday meal. As they emerged from the academy's entrance onto the sprawling training grounds, An's eyes caught sight of a familiar figure. It was a girl she had seen before during a group lesson, though their interactions had been minimal. Something about the girl's demeanor struck An as melancholic and disheartened.

Unable to simply pass by someone she vaguely knew in such a desolate state, An's compassionate nature propelled her forward. With genuine concern, she approached the brown-haired girl. "Hello," An greeted softly, hoping to spark a memory. "Do you remember me? We attended the group lesson together. My name is Gurē An. What are you up to? What are your plans for lunch?"

It was a peculiar sight indeed to witness someone lingering by the training dummies during the lunch break. Most of the students would be eager to escape the confines of the academy and indulge in the freedom of leisure and camaraderie. Yet here was this girl, seemingly lost in her own world of sadness. An couldn't fathom leaving her alone in such a state, even if their previous acquaintance had been brief.

A soft voice startled Risa out of her reverie; she nearly jumped out of her skin when she was greeted, whirling wildly in place. She looked like a startled deer: shoulders hunched, eyes wide, ready to bolt. But she did remember this girl, and so her guard dropped minutely. She didn’t want to think about the lesson that she had fled like a coward, so she pushed it firmly out of her mind. "Hi, um… I’m Risa,” she said. Her voice cracked, which made her cheeks flush with warmth. "I was… going to train, I think…” All of the bubbly vivacity that she had brought into the beginning of her academy year was gone, evaporated like mist in the summer heat. Risa looked like a wet cat, scraggly and sad, and was so overwhelmed by An’s heartfelt invitation that she immediately burst into tears. "I-I’m sorry,” she sobbed. "I don’t—you should go—” She desperately wanted to leave. She very much wanted to say yes, thank you, I would love to have lunch with you and your friends, and then go and do just that, eat a yummy meal and have fun with the other kids and then go back to class and study hard and train well. But so too did she very much feel that she was not allowed to do any of those things, because she was a coward and she was weak, and she was strongly beginning to doubt that she belonged here at all. Risa remained rooted in place, too confused and too overwhelmed to be able to make a decision of any kind.

Risa felt like she was being a sniveling baby, dripping snot all down her front, while pretty, delicate An offered her a pretty, delicate handkerchief and looked at her with pretty, delicate eyes. An didn’t even know her, yet she was being so kind—that was the real courage, Risa thought. Utterly overwhelmed by the thought of interacting with a group of people, Risa was visibly relieved by An’s offer of eating together, just the two of them—but she also felt unimaginably guilty, like she was robbing An of her friends in a selfish bid for attention. "I don’t want to—you had plans,” Risa said, wet and helpless. "Your friends are waiting for you, you don’t—why are you being so nice to me?” Pure confusion spurred on by a simple gesture: Risa almost sounded angry about it, her torrential emotions too forceful for her to express in any kinder way. She didn’t even have a lunch box; she’d forgotten it at home. Food turned to ash in her mouth, and even though her stomach grumbled in protest, her appetite had dwindled down to nothing. "You—everyone else was so excited, when the Mizukage came,” she said. "You all jumped into it. I ran. No one else feels like this, it’s just me, I’m just—bad. I’m just bad.”

In the moment, Risa was not able to understand the full depth and breadth of the maturity An was displaying: it would only be in recounting the experience to her father later that he would comment on how kind she sounded, and how patient she’d been even in the face of Risa’s outburst. Despite being younger than Risa, she had a much better understanding of emotions, and her father would gently advise her to learn from the younger girl’s example. In the moment, however, she just scrubbed at her eyes and took a few deep breaths, trying to calm her jackrabbiting heart rate and get a grip. When An repeated her offer, so warm and so gentle, Risa responded with a jerky nod, and would follow to whatever quiet place An thought would be best to sit down. She felt like a lost jellyfish, floating helplessly in An’s wake, but she was grateful for the guidance. Her tears slowed. She sniffled, cleared her throat. "Thank you,” she said quietly, her voice breaking. "I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Everything has just been—too much.” Eyes red, she wiped at her leaky nose with her shirtsleeve. "Have you—did you ever train with Kyoka-sensei? Do you know her?” For such a brief training session, it had made a massive impact on Risa’s young career, and she was desperate to know if she was the only one left feeling so lost and so desperate in the wake of Kyoka’s tutelage.

An motioned for Risa to go ahead and have some too, as she took an onigiri ball herself. Food was always something that made AN feel better, so she hoped that it would make Risa feel a little better too.

Risa just listened quietly as An talked, her tone soft and sweet and gentle in an almost motherly way, which was a weird word to use to describe a girl even younger than her but whatever. She sounded very soothing, and Risa felt herself calming down slowly but surely, reassured by An’s assertion that she wasn’t bad or weak or shameful for being as lost as she was—and that her experience with Kyouka-sensei wasn’t, at least on the tin, all that unusual. She wasn’t sure if that made her feel better or worse. With a murmured thank you Risa took one of the onigiri, but she didn’t eat it just yet—her appetite was nonexistent. She held it carefully and looked into its nori-wrapped face as she thought about how to explain what had happened with Kyouka-sensei. "It was supposed to be a little bukijutsu training, because I was struggling a lot with that,” she said slowly. "But Kyouka-sensei started out by saying that I sucked with weapons and also just kind of in general, and that really… I mean, I got pretty upset… and I just kept getting angrier and angrier as we were training.” She swallowed hard, closing her eyes against the memory. Papa was really upset, because when I got home after he had to take me to the medics and I wouldn’t tell him what happened.” She was getting her order of events a little mixed up, but the essence of the story was clear: Kyouka-sensei had imparted a critical lesson, and she had done so with blood and fury. "And then I just…” Risa hiccuped, her thumb smoothing over the nori wrapper of her rice ball. "People kept being mean to me. And I couldn’t do anything about it, really. I tried to fight back but I just got blinded or clobbered or something. And it made me think, like—if the weak are food to the strong, then what does that make me? If I’m just food, then should I even be here at all?” Miserably, she took a bite of the rice ball, and she was absolutely depressed to find that it was delicious, utterly resentful of the fact that it did, actually, make her feel better.

Her eyes burned with fresh tears as An told her exactly what she’d wanted to hear in the wake of that disastrous day: that she was allowed to be upset, that she wasn’t weak and stupid and useless, that she wasn’t a failure because she hadn’t been able to stand up for herself. What she’d been unable to tell her dad, she finally was able to share with An, and for that some of the burden that had been weighing her down was lifted off her shoulders. But too much time had passed between the incident and the cure; Kyouka-sensei’s words were left to marinate for too long, digging her hooks into Risa’s mind long after the pair had separated, never to truly interact with one another again. She straddled a line, and her fate, however unknown it was to Risa, laid in the hands of those who surrounded her: whether support from people like An would turn her towards the path of a protector, or harm from people like Keiji would send her further down the path of misery and hatred, would remain to be seen. In the here and now, she was able to hold back her tears and allow herself to be comforted by good food and kind company. An had given her a lot to think about, and she needed time to let her mind sort itself out, think about strength and resilience and what those things meant to her. "Thank you,” she said again, softly; then, summoning up the dregs of her bravery, she asked: "Do you… think we could have lunch together again tomorrow? Maybe I could… come sit with your friends… if that’s okay?”
