The waterlogged grass sloshed under Umidebito’s sandals as she made her way swiftly through the forest. Up ahead, the trees grew more sparsely and she could see the blue gray of the ocean under an overcast sky. A crisp breeze howled through a sea cave nearby and Umi shivered as they came to the edge of the grass. It was high tide and there wasn’t much beach left between them and the water. She looked to Kuronmeru Inei, her companion on this mission, and smiled reassuringly, "It’s not too much further.” [break][break]

She pointed out a small lighthouse seated on a rocky outcropping about a mile out to sea. The choppy waves buffeted the stone base of the structure which stood alone on the horizon as a beacon of the civilized world against the vastness of nature. A light burned at the top of the tower indicating that someone remained inside to tend the flame. [break][break]

They both knew why they had come. A distress signal had been sent out from the tower before them and the occupants had not responded to attempts to contact them by radio. The tower was normally manned by Mist Shinobi in pairs that rotated on a weekly basis and the presence of shinobi had been enough to deter pirate attacks on the three villages that dotted the nearby coastline for the past few decades. "I feel a single aura inside. How should we approach it?” Umi asked her partner. There were many avenues that the pair could explore moving forward. There was the direct method of simply walking across the water, climbing the stone stairs that wrapped around the tower, and knocking on the heavy wooden door. They could swim across stealthily and try the cellar door or climb up to the windows near the lantern at the top. They could also do more reconnaissance of the surrounding area to try and ascertain what had happened or what they might be up against. The nearest of the towns was only a few hours walk down the beach and the people there might be able to provide some insight into any strange goings on in the area. [break][break]

The land was basically a swamp, water sloshing over Inei’s boots with every step. Luckily, he’d been in these kinds of conditions enough times before to make sure every pair of boots he owned was waterproofed to perfection. The girl he was accompanying on this inane mission didn’t seem to have the same care, wearing the typical sandals as they moved through the wet marshlands.

Though he understood why he was forced to come out to the middle of nowhere, it didn’t mean Inei was happy about it. He had spent numerous occasions wheedling his way out of ever being assigned the watch at the lighthouse, now he had to go babysit the incompetents who had managed to get themselves into trouble.

He didn’t answer Umidebito’s comment. He didn’t care that they were close to the lighthouse, he could see it, though the smile on his face and the nod he gave would portray someone who was possibly interested. He was just ready to get in there, figure out how those assigned had screwed up, and get back home to his laboratory.

The tokubetsu jounin paused in his hike to look up at the tower as the Ama announced that she only sensed one person in the lighthouse. Which was not how it was supposed to go. There were always supposed to be at least two shinobi on duty, a huge reason Inei always refused the assignment.

He hummed, hand coming up to tap at his jawline as he contemplated the move forward. A direct approach was the most appealing to him, but he didn’t want to have to deal with the paperwork of possible hostage situations going bad if they were spotted. They could gather more information from the nearby village, but that would take some time that they might not have.

"A subtle approach through the water would probably be best," he said, finally. "We can do some recon and see what’s going on before we rush in."

He turned to Umidebito with his soft smile to see what she thought of his plan. She was free to disagree, he just would think that much less of the fish woman if she did.
