BASIC INFORMATION

NAME: Muramasa Ryūzaburō
AGE: 18
GENDER: Male
BIRTHDAY: February 19th 1006
VILLAGE: Tetsu no Kuni Kumogakure
VILLAGE: Muramasa | Omori [KKG]
RANK: Jōnin
POSITION: --
OTHER ALIAS: Unryū [Dragon of the Clouds] (World) - After severing ties with the Land of Iron, Ryū bestowed upon himself the unimaginative alias of Unryū when he took refuge in Kumogakure. It marked his deep loyalty to the village and the sense of duty he felt he owed to Kumogakure at the time. Little did he know that this simple moniker would become well known across country lines.

Tetsuryū [Iron Dragon] (Land of Iron) - During his tenure within the Land of Iron's military, his allies bestowed upon him this formidable, yet simple, alias. This alias was derived from his given name, subtly transformed to mirror his unwavering fortitude and indomitable might on the field of battle. This epithet is largely forgotten now, and Ryū isn't too fond of it because it opens wounds of the past.

APPEARANCE

HEIGHT: 5' 8" (172.7cm)
WEIGHT: 138lbs (62.6kg)

Ryū possesses a physical appearance that is deceptively average, standing at a mediocre height of 5’ 8” and weighing approximately 138 lbs. Although he doesn’t stand out much physically, every line and contour of his lithe musculature has been finely honed to perfection, allowing him to move with unparalleled speed and precision on the battlefield.

His pale skin tone lends an air of ethereality to his overall presence, which serves to compliment his pale blue, almost grey, eyes. The young samurai often has slightly darkened circles around his eyes, highlighting his inability to sleep due to recurring nightmares. When Ryū is taking a battle seriously, his gaze is eerily emotionless and piercing, almost as if he’s looking through his enemy rather than at them.

Framing his visage is a cascade of raven black hair, sleek and lustrous, pulled back into a high ponytail that when left to its own devices rests a couple of inches below his shoulders. The ponytail is held in place with a simple black hair tie. This practical hairstyle aims to keep his hair out of his face when he’s moving around at top speed. It's very rare for Ryū to let his hair down, only doing so in company he trusts and when he goes to sleep.

Ryū's choice of attire speaks volumes of his preference for comfort on the battlefield over tradition, opting to wear simple clothing instead of typical samurai armor. He drapes himself in a loose flowing black kimono that allows for a wide range of movements. The kimono has a soft grey trim along the front opening of the garment. Over the kimono, he dons a casal colored Haori that drapes down loosely to around his mid-thigh.

Unlike most Samurai, he opts to go without tabi, preferring to be as close to the surface he’s fighting on. Ryū only wears a pair of simple leather setta to protect the soles of his feet: their supple material offers both comfort and stability as he traverses various terrains. Black hanao secures the footwear tightly to his feet.

No matter where his journey takes him, Ryū is never without his trusted katana, since it’s his primary weapon and his biggest asset on the battlefield. It has a copper tsuba and kashira and a plain black cord wrap around the Tsuka to provide a reliable grip. The sleek black sheath and its minimalist design are intentional choices made to reduce the weapon’s weight as much as possible without sacrificing utility.

PERSONALITY

NINDO: --

Initially, duty and loyalty bound Ryū to Kumogakure; however, over the years, he has grown to embrace the village and its inhabitants as his own family and home, deepening his commitment to its well-being. His sense of duty now stems from the strong bond he shares with the village and the desire to protect and nurture it. Protecting the people of his new home comes above all else; in the event that an ally or friend has been injured or killed, his rage can sometimes cause him to completely forget about his usual tenet of mercy.

After settling in Kumogakure for the past couple years, Ryū has almost completely reshaped his view on the world and taken a significantly more casual approach to the code of Bushido. The teachings of his father, emphasizing loyalty, courage, truthfulness, compassion, and honor, have left a lasting impression on him, but he no longer strictly adheres to those teachings like he did in his teenage years. Ryū still holds deep respect for the core values and endeavors to live by them in his own way, but he realizes that sometimes exceptions should be made to those values.

In Ryū's new life as a shinobi, he has adopted a more pragmatic perspective on the key components of Bushido, namely justice and righteousness. While he acknowledges their importance, he finds that the traditional samurai and Land of Iron’s standards often set lofty and at times impractical expectations. Instead, he has come to believe that those who possess power carry a significant responsibility to exercise reason and restraint before resorting to violence and taking lives.

By emphasizing the importance of reason, Ryū aims to avoid unnecessary bloodshed and seeks alternative solutions whenever it makes sense. He believes that violence should be a last resort and that preserving life should be a paramount consideration. While he acknowledges the necessity of combat in certain situations, he strives to minimize harm and seeks to find resolutions that do not require the loss of life. He recognizes that the world is complex, and strict adherence to idealistic notions can sometimes lead to death or worse the loss of an ally’s life.

Beyond all the lofty ideals, Ryū is a passionate feline enthusiast who has a special fondness for cats. His home has become a haven for stray cats, as he opens his doors and heart to these furry wanderers. As a result, his porch is often adorned with a delightful assortment of feline companions, who come and go as they please, basking in the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Ryū's compassion extends well beyond simply providing for the cats' basic needs. He also takes the time to understand their individual quirks and personalities, forging deep connections with most of the stray felines in Kumogakure.

Additionally, when not out and about on missions, Ryū's newfound sociability mirrors the characteristics of a personable, yet lazy cat. Just like a number of his feline companions, he has a laid-back and relaxed demeanor, prioritizing rest and comfort. He seeks out cozy spots to lounge in, indulging in leisurely naps and savoring the simple pleasures of life. In his interactions with others, Ryū is a man of few words. His casual and easygoing approach reflects a unique blend of sociability and tranquility, akin to the charm of a quiet yet personable cat basking in the warmth of the sun.

While still largely reserved and introverted, Ryū now makes a conscious effort to participate in conversations. Gone is the reticent persona of a warrior that he once embodied; instead, he does his best to express himself and form deeper connections with others. Whenever he engages in discussions he shares his thoughts and experiences when fitting. Whether exchanging lighthearted banter or delving into meaningful topics, Ryū genuinely savors the company of others, despite being a rather quiet individual.

HISTORY

Ryūzaburō was the firstborn son of Muramasa Hiroshi, a member of a noble family deeply rooted within the Land of Iron called the Muramasa clan, and Muramasa Miyako, who had loose blood ties to the Omori clan of Kumogakure, and as such Ryū was born with access to the Tennogan. His father Hiroshi, despite not being a master craftsman, had earned the respect of the clan for his dedication to the art of using the sword, whenever a new design for a sword was being contemplated he'd be the first true test of the clan's blades to make sure they were up to snuff for the Land of Iron military.

For the most part, Ryū lived a happy normal life during his formative years. Despite being a shy toddler, he managed to form a strong bond with a strong willed girl named Haruka from another renowned family within the country. She would drag Ryū out on little adventures that he’d always get in trouble for, but it was so much fun that he'd always succumb to the little girl's peer pressure to join her. Nearly every day of his childhood he spent on shenanigans with Haruka until he finally turned 5 years old.

It was around this time that his father, General Muramasa Hiroshi gave Ryū the option of starting his apprenticeship as a crafter within the Muramasa clan or following in his footsteps as a samurai. At this age Ryū was a lot like his father and was quick to choose training in kenjutsu. Needless to say, the young boy absolutely despised the idea of hammering away in front of a forge for the rest of his life.

Without any hesitation, Hiroshi proudly hired a tutor to begin training Ryū in the way of the Samurai, which inadvertently meant less time for him to be a regular kid and less time with Haruka. His adventures around the village were replaced with classes of samurai etiquette and swordsmanship. It was around this time that he became painfully aware of the expectations of his lineage, Ryū honed his swordsmanship under his tutor’s and father's tutelage, displaying exceptional talent and promise.

For the most part Ryū enjoyed learning the way of the sword and he didn’t mind dedicating time to it, but there was definitely a part of him that missed his time with his childhood friend; there were always talks of the two getting married eventually to join the families, although future events would thwart such arrangements. At the age of 7, Ryū joined the Samurai's military and he immersed himself in the rigorous training and discipline of the military, earning a bit of respect and making a name for himself among his comrades at a very young age.

Before he could fully be immersed within the military, the Muramasa clan was banished for Muramasa Iemitsu's treason shortly after Ryū turned 8. Hiroshi was stubborn and refused to abandon what his clan and himself had spent lifetimes building up, and Ryū loyally stayed with his father. The two of them, Ryū's younger brother, and a few other members of the Muramasa clan managed to hold their estate from being seized by the samurai for almost a month, to a point where in a fair battle it felt like they'd be capable of fighting off the entire Land of Iron if necessary.

It wasn't until the following month that someone high up on the food chain within the country became impatient and hired an assassin to kill the remaining clan that was holding out in their family castle. The assassin managed to take out many of the remaining clan members, and Ryū only managed to survive because his mother woke him up. Miyako pushed Ryū to escape to Kumogakure as she held off the assassin to the best of her abilities. She gave Ryū a letter detailing Ryu’s connection to the Omori clan and Kumogakure, and the young boy ended up escaping through a secret exit from the castle that he had learned of from his youthful adventures with Haruka.

Unlike many Muramasa, upon the young samurai’s escape he made his way directly to the Land of Lightning and was picked up by a Jounin from Kumogakure known as Kyuumu Riku. Riku brought him to Kumogakure and helped him get an audience with the Raikage. Due to the losses the country had felt at the hands of the plague, the Raikage and the council were quick to take in the young samurai. Due to the fact that he hadn’t received proper training in chakra or the Tennogan, however, he was given to the Omori clan to nurture his Tennogan and put back into the Academy for a few years to learn the other schools of techniques outside of bukijutsu.

Due to his training as a samurai, Ryū was worlds ahead of his peers when it came to kenjutsu; when it came to handling a blade the instructors made note that he was maybe just under Chuunin level. So Ryu was mostly taught in other things like ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu, and other forms of bukijutsu. While Ryu struggled picking up these other techniques, the Omori clan assigned him to one of the clan’s "teachers” who helped him understand how to utilize the tennogan that he’d had since birth.

By the time he turned 11, Ryū was promoted to Genin and his "teacher” had him do the typical survival test that fresh Omori genin go through. Having faired the wilds on his trip from the Land of Iron to the Land of Lightning, the test in the Omori compound was child's play in comparison. Once he had passed the survival test and showed relative mastery with the Tennogan he was allowed to join a standard genin team.
The team's sensei was an all-rounder and helped elevate each of them by training them in areas they lacked proficiency in. Between the standard genin missions he'd help Ryū by teaching him to achieve better chakra control by teaching him the Tree Climbing Technique and the Water Walking technique. Although the techniques were relatively basic, it took him a while to get the hang of things. Additionally Ryū continued his training with a sword based what he remembered of his father.

Ryū spent a little over 4 years becoming a more rounded shinobi, although he still had a massive focus in Bukijutsu he had picked up a few ninjutsu to help him out of some tight jams. When his team ended up going to their first Chuunin exams at the age of 15 they were more than ready. Ryū wasn't really the thinking type, so the first two sections of the exam that required tactics and intelligence he relied on his teammates to carry him through and showed off an invaluable trait as a chuunin: knowing one's own strengths and weaknesses as well as being able to follow when it's necessary. During the final stage of the exam he only won the first fight, showing off a combination of masterful swordplay and the Tennogan's ability to thwart ninjutsu users.

The second fight was pretty one sided, he ended up going up against a genjutsu user and basically got stomped. There wasn't much he could honestly do in the situation, and so he ended the fight unconscious and he ended up waking up a chuunin. It was the first time he'd truly seen how crazy some shinobi arts could be; against genjutsu he was practically helpless: unable to seal it and unable to break it without basically killing himself.

As a chuunin he ended up joining an ops team and finally going on real missions that benefited from his expertise, he was no longer patrolling the outskirts of the city, looking for lost pets, or cleaning up trash. He was fighting bandits and the occasional low or mid tier shinobi, although he was doing the latter with a few teammates. Eventually he was invited on a mission to kill a Kumogakure missing nin, which unbeknownst to Kumogakure, was responsible for killing his whole.

When Ryū finally came face to face with the man, he lost himself in anger and almost died during the encounter. If it weren't for the backup from the team and the medic shinobi they had brought with them he would have met the same fate as his family. Despite that the death of the assassin was incredibly cathartic and was finally what allowed him to finally let go of his old life and the past.

After that mission Ryū worked loyally as a shinobi for a few years and finally began taking time to get familiar with his new home. Although he had spent nearly 10 years in the village he had spent most of that time proving himself as a loyal shinobi. He ended up finally getting a house of his own on the edge of the Omori compound and letting a clowder of stray cats stay there. Additionally he has also started to finally try to make friends among his fellow shinobi instead of treating the transactions as strictly business.

After a few more successful missions as a chuunin, the village recognized him for his mastery of the sword and promoted him to Special Jounin.

FIGHTING STYLE

In the initial stages of combat, Ryū relies on the first stage of the Tennogan, which possesses the ability to absorb jutsu. This allows him to neutralize a lot of common enemy attacks and create openings for himself to advance and close in on the enemy. Leveraging his specialization in high-speed kenjutsu, Ryū capitalizes on his swift movements to close the distance between him and his opponents.

As he approaches, Ryū transitions seamlessly to the second stage of the Tennogan, unleashing its incredible visual capabilities. This stage enhances his perception to an extraordinary degree, granting him unparalleled awareness of his surroundings and his adversary's movements. With his senses heightened, Ryū engages in close combat making use of his heightened perception combined with his Kenjutsu to take advantage of the tiniest openings in someone’s defense.

The combination of his swift swordplay and enhanced visual prowess makes him a formidable opponent at incredibly close ranges, capable of outmaneuvering and overwhelming even the most skilled adversaries. Ryū's fighting style leaves a lot to be desired against shinobi that utilize genjutsu, however, since he doesn’t have any enhanced defenses or special ways to fight genjutsu. Against Genjutsu users Ryū has to effectively rely on teammates to help him out.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Tennogan
Despite starting his Tennogan training a little late, Ryū possesses a respectable level of talent with the Tennogan. He's more than capable of using both stages of the dojutsu, although he much prefers to utilize the second stage to enhance his swordplay. While his eyes are in their base state they can detect chakra and see through objects not infused with chakra within 200m passively and out to 1km when focused, although the chakra at that range can be a little difficult to make out. Currently he can seal away most jutsu that have a High cost or lower within the Tennogan.

Ryū is capable of switching to the second stage of the Tennogan rather seamlessly when he enters melee combat. The visual prowess of this stage is incredible, allowing him to not only see the chakra of the enemy clearly but details of the battlefield out to 1km passively. Additionally, this heightened state of the Tennogan makes it so his eyes can keep up with things approximately 3 times faster than they could normally keep up with, which when combined with his reflexes allows him to respond to high speed threats that might normally be impossible for another shinobi of his caliber.

Legendary Samurai
Ryū has devoted an overwhelming portion of his life to mastering kenjutsu, reaching a level of skill that is unparalleled, even among the legendary samurai of the Land of Iron. What sets him apart from other bukijutsu specialists is his unwavering commitment to sword training. In fact, any non-sword-related Bukijutsu techniques are considered non-specialized for him. This unwavering dedication to swordplay enables him to outmaneuver numerous shinobi who also claim mastery over the blade. His intense focus and expertise in swordsmanship have elevated him to extraordinary heights in the realm of kenjutsu.

Lightning Reflexes
Ryū's lightning reflexes are one of the two hallmarks of his high speed kenjutsu. He reacts to threats with an almost instinctual precision, turning milliseconds into moments that can be taken advantage of. Whenever he’s in the heat of battle, Ryū's reflexes serve as both his shield and sword, allowing him to avoid imminent danger in high speed combat and allowing him to take advantage of the tiniest of openings. His reflexes are so finely attuned that many of his peers have joked about him having precognition..

Demonic Speed
Ryū specialized wholly in high speed bukijutsu, because he was taught at a young age that the sword that cuts first sets the pace of battle. Having been inspired by his father's extraordinary speed, Ryū has devoted his entire shinobi career to refining and enhancing his own speed. Through unwavering training he has began to approach the pinnacle of speed, moving with a swiftness that leaves most shinobi trailing behind.
