A young boy stood before the mission centre's bulletin board, his dark eyes scanning through the various paper fliers that were pinned to it. The room was bustling with activity as other shinobi came and went, discussing their assignments and preparing for their missions. Shō, however, was in a unique position. As he was still awaiting his official assignments from the hunter-nin group, he had the privilege of choosing missions as he saw fit, or even deciding not to take any mission at all.

His family wasn't excessively affluent, but they were comfortably situated in Kirigakure and Mizu no Kuni, thanks to both their decent standing and the relatively low cost of living in the village. They had their own small farm where they grew fungi related foods for personal consumption as well as for sale. This self-sufficiency meant that while the world might be riddled with dangers like murders, poisons, diseases, and the inevitable march of time, no Gurē - no member of his clan - had ever succumbed to the scourge of hunger.

As Shō scanned the fliers, one particular mission caught his attention. It spoke of a settlement besieged by bandits, and rumours swirling that these outlaws were being led by none other than a child. The thought was intriguing and unsettling. Shō had always aspired for peace, desiring to quell conflicts rather than incite them. Any mission that involved bringing tranquillity to a troubled area was a mission he felt drawn to.

However, this case was slightly different compared to the previous missions he took. If the rumours were true and the bandit leader was indeed a child, it was not a matter of defeating an opponent in combat, but rather apprehending a young person and potentially sending them to a life behind bars. Shō hesitated, torn between his duty as a shinobi and his compassionate nature.

With a shake of his head, he dismissed the notion that a child could be leading a group of bandits. It seemed too unlikely, too harsh a reality to consider. Squaring his shoulders, he walked over to the mission centre's reception desk. "Good morning!" he greeted with a warm tone. "I'm Shō, a Chuunin. I'm interested in undertaking this mission." As he finished the sentence, he handed over the paper fliers he had removed from the board, along with his identification card.

Before leaving, he inquired about the specific requirements of the mission. He needed to be prepared for the challenges that lay ahead. He also asked about the protocol once he apprehended the bandits, would the prison department be willing to accept them? "I have a question," he began. "I'm wondering if the relevant authority, such as the prison department, would be willing to extend assistance, should I successfully apprehend the bandits." This inquiry held immense significance to him, as he had no intention to kill the bandits unless the situation truly demanded it.

The mission center of Kirigakure was, as expected, full of people milling about, getting missions, logging out of missions, or simply just discussing with each other about the possibilities of an upcoming mission, or the details of a recently concluded one. Not much attention was paid to the silver-haired fellow who was presently scrutinizing the mission boards, as most of the people who came here did not simply come to socialize. They were mostly on a mission (no pun intended).

When Shō approached the mission center's reception desk, he was greeted by the sight of a dozing receptionist. Most likely she had gone through a rather long and tedious shift. There was another desk staff behind her, who, instead of attending to Shō, prodded her sleeping fellow in the back. The young woman sprang awake with a yelp, and glared at her colleague, who gave her a pretentiously innocent smile and pointed at Shō. The receptionist's eyes widened slightly, but she smiled, a tired, but cheerful smile.

"Hello! Let me just go through the files... yes, everything seems to be in order," the receptionist replied, as she checked out Shō's identification and the mission he had chosen, affixing a stamp of approval to the necessary documents and returning them. "All the best with your mission." The next question asked by the Chuunin seemed to give the receptionist a little pause. "Uh, I guess so," came the uncertain reply, "although I suspect that a good number of them, if not all, will probably be executed. Of course, I could be wrong, but prisoners require resources that could be used for other ventures as well." She shrugged.

A long silence enveloped between the two. Not really the answer he was looking for, but to be fair, that was the logical course of action. If the prisoners were sufficiently evil, execution would indeed stand as the justifiable choice. He held no qualms about that, even as a pacifist, he knew exactly where to draw the line. Yet, for minor thieves, a more lenient sentence should be admissible, shouldn't it? Some deserved a shot at redemption, and he could only hope that this sentiment was shared by those in authority.

"Thank you." Shō expressed his gratitude, offering a slight bow to the receptionist before departing. Exiting the mission centre, his mind was already busy working, constructing intricate plans. To him, planning ranked as one of the most important steps, equally important to execution. Lacking a well-defined strategy, one would flounder, not knowing what to do, why it was necessary, and how it should be executed.

In the present context, his prime objective was to engage the villagers in dialogue. The collection of intelligence stood as his foremost priority. His current plan was to stealthily approach the enemy's location, aiming to apprehend them individually if circumstances allowed, but the plan was subjected to change based on the conversation with the settlers. Regardless, he remained steadfast in avoiding violence or homicide, unless it was truly necessary. For instance, if innocent lives were on the edge, he wouldn't hesitate to put an end to the bandits. As he ventured toward the settlement, a silent prayer resonated within him, yearning for the mission to be smooth and easy.

For a while, the young Chuunin was silent, the receptionist trying to defuse the uncomfortable silence by smiling nervously, as she fidgeted and waited for him to break the silence by asking another question or leaving. Eventually, the young man thanked the receptionist with a bow, which she returned. "Have a good day," she replied. At least he was polite.

The way to the designated settlement was not hard to find. although the village was out of the way, it had not particularly been situated in a place difficult to approach. From the thatch roofs and bamboo walls, it was also quite clear that this was a place that didn't seem to be very high in technological advancement, as expected of a backwater village. And yet, there were signs to show that there was, to some extent, a relative degree of prosperity to the place. Some buildings were made of stone, and this suggested that the more important people of the village either lived in, or plied their trade in, said buildings.

As Shō approached, the first thing he would notice was three men wielding sticks (one had a crude knife lashed to it to form a makeshift spear) and guarding the entrance of the village, whose perimeter was demarcated by a thick bamboo fence. As soon as they caught sight of him, one of them whispered to another who ran off, while the two remaining men turned to face him. "State your business."

Shō's approach didn't waver as he met the guard's gaze with a calm and composed demeanor. Understanding the gravity of the situation, he spoke with a respectful tone, keeping his hands visible and non-threatening.

"Greetings." Shō began, his voice carrying a polite and approachable tone. "I am Shō, a chuunin from Kirigakure. I've been sent here to address the concerns of the settlement that has been facing harassment from nearby bandits. I've come to offer my assistance and the first thing I would like to do is gather information about the situation." As he spoke, Shō made sure to maintain eye contact and stand with an open posture, showing that he meant no harm and had genuine intentions. He allowed his words to hang in the air, giving the guards a moment to process his statement and decide on their response.

"Oh!" As if realising an additional point of validation was needed, Shō's hand quickly slipped into his pouch before pulling out a copy of the mission notice he pulled from the board. A little crumpled but still readable, he offered it to the guards for verification. It was a tangible confirmation of his assignment and his official role in addressing the settlement's plight.

The Chuunin's greeting was met with silence, as the two guards watched him warily, even as he stated his intention to gather intel on the present situation. The younger of the men flinched slightly when Shō reached for his pouch, but made no further motion when his elder did not respond. The elder took the offered paper, while his companion quickly drew close to join him in perusing its contents.

As soon as they had seen Shō's documentation showing that he was a Chuunin from Kirigakure, they seemed to both relax and at the same time become more respectful, even as they seemed happy that Kirigakure had finally answered their request. "Oh, greetings, Shō-san," the one who had addressed him replied. It helped that he had shown that he was not intending to be violent, and had shown good manners himself. "I hope you don't take offense for my being gruff. As you know of our bandit problem, you'll understand why security is on edge these days, and every single one who just walks up to our gates has to be scrutinized. As for information, we'll be glad to help you out with that, but the village chief will be able to answer whatever questions you have. If you'd please come this way--"

If Shō tagged along, the older guard would lead him into the village, while the younger one remained at the gate. It didn't take long before they arrived at what seemed to be the village center, where the third man, who had left on Shō's arrival, could be seen talking with a rather old fellow, while about seven burly fellows stood by with sticks and makeshift weapons. "He's from Kirigakure, Chief," the older guard said, a hint of excitement in his voice. "Looks like we've been taken seriously. He said he had questions." There were murmurs of approval among the armed men, as the old man stepped forward. "Greetings, youngster. You know why we summoned you. What more would you wish to learn?"

Thinking back, he felt that he could have handled this more tactfully, yet he was relieved that his gesture hadn't been misconstrued as a threat. A false alarm in this context would have undoubtedly complicated matters. As the older guard led the way, Shō followed into the heart of the village, ready to meet with the chief.

The overall rustic charm of the village conveyed a sense of simplicity and tradition, similar to his hometown, Hoka no Mura. Memories of the civil war that had once ravaged his home surged back, a reminder of his powerlessness in the past. However, he was determined not to repeat that mistake.

Upon reaching what appeared to be the heart of the village, he was introduced to the village chief. The elderly man approached with a demeanour that exuded a balanced blend of wisdom and approachability. Returning the greeting with a respectful bow, Shō addressed the chief with earnest sincerity. "Greetings, honoured Chief." He began, his tone reflecting deep respect. "I am Shō, a Chuunin from Kirigakure. Yes, of course I do, I have been sent here to offer assistance regarding the bandit situation that has affected your village. But before that, I would like to gather some information."

Shō paused briefly, ensuring his thoughts were clear as he prepared to continue the dialogue. "Would you mind sharing what you know about the bandits? Who are they? What have they done? How many of them? Who is their leader? Roughly where is their base? And any other details you can provide." While he spoke, he maintained unwavering eye contact with the chief, displaying his determination and commitment to resolving the pressing issue. The open-ended nature of his final question was a deliberate choice, aimed to make it a productive and engaging dialogue that would help him uncover the details of the situation and ascertain the best course of action.

The old man listened to the Kiri Chuunin, even as he made a gesture to one of the men standing around. The man dashed off, and soon returned, bearing two stools, which he placed close to Shō and the old man. With a slight wheeze, the chief took a seat on the stool proffered him, and looked up at the Chuunin. "To answer your first question, we are not exactly sure who these bandits are, though there are many rumors, which seem fitting, that suggest they are from another village somewhere in Mizu no Kuni, which had experienced some disaster."

The old man paused to scratch the side of his jaw. "As for their numbers, I'm not sure. Between 15 and 30, we think. As to what they have done, they have stolen our food and valuables time and again. We know they live somewhere out in the forest, but we have no idea exactly where. Even though we suspect they are somewhere to the west of us, we've never been able to find them, even when we send scouting parties. Our men seem to get disoriented and lose their way, returning emptyhanded. As for how they operate, it's quite scary. Their leader has a magic flute that puts us to sleep. And then when we wake, they have taken our properties and gone. We don't know the exact identity of their leader, but we know that he's called the demon child. No one has seen his face, since he moves around hooded and masked, but the height and voice are congruent with those of a child."

Stepping away from the village, his mind was already engaged in analysing the details he had obtained from the chief. The prospect of facing a dozen or more enemies seemed daunting; he recognized that the odds were significantly stacked against him in terms of numbers. However, the fact that the bandits didn't appear to be outright murderers offered some solace. Their actions seemed to lean more toward theft, suggesting a lack of inclination toward lethal violence and were probably just a bunch of commoners. This presented him with a potential avenue for negotiation or resolution.

The most astonishing aspect was the repeated indication that the bandit leader was not just a practitioner of genjutsu but also a child. "Is that even possible...?" He thought inside his mind, his compassionate nature causing him to wonder if he could bring himself to imprison a child, even if they were responsible for these actions. His internal debate raged between principles of justice, redemption, and the belief in the potential for change. "Given their relatively nonviolent approach, perhaps negotiation is the way to go." He decided to go for the diplomatic approach instead of violence.

As his thoughts crystallised, he decided on his next steps. Infiltration was the key - getting closer to the bandit's base to ascertain the true situation and ambushing their leader. His lineage's unique technique, Ikō, offered him the perfect tool for this purpose. The technique allowed him to meld his body with the flora and fauna, rendering him nearly undetectable save for chakra sensing. Ideal for reconnaissance and infiltration missions, this ability would serve him well in approaching the base undetected.

Without further delay, he activated the technique. As if diving into a pool, he disappeared into the ground, merging with it effortlessly. His form travelled beneath the surface as he navigated toward the western forest. Occasionally, he emerged from the earth to the treetops, ensuring he stayed hidden while maintaining a clear view of his surroundings.

The village chief nodded as the chuunin thanked him for the proffered information. "I'd have asked if you would need people to go with you, but I don't think numbers would help you," he said, gesturing to the small group of armed men standing around. "These boys were mobilized, because the bandits usually tend to come towards the end of the month. Since we have about a week till then, we were hoping to do something preemptive and form more extensive search parties to check the forest, even though that never yielded positive fruits. If you need any other resources we can provide, please let us know."

The Kiri nin's hijutsu was of invaluable use on this mission, he would come to realize. For the first defense of the bandits was the forest itself. The plant growth was so luxuriant that one could not pass through without making a loud racket, unless one traveled by treetop, and mostly only shinobi were capable of such a feat. Shō's voyage into the forest initially showed nothing out of the ordinary, as he traveled westwards. But eventually, from one of his perches atop a tall tree, he saw what looked like a beaten path beneath. Faint, but clearly something made by constant passage of human feet. He also noticed, from his elevated position, a shack deftly hidden among the trees, almost impossible to see if one was on the same level as it. With the path, the only way one could approach the bandit hideout was well-watched, and the bandits could be notified before anyone reached their camp. Anyone they saw coming.

Shō nodded appreciatively at the village chief's offer of assistance and resources. He understood the limitations of sending a large group of armed men into the forest; it would likely tip off the bandits and hinder their chances of getting close to their hideout unnoticed. Also, he would like to settle this peacefully if possible. Bringing a group of armed men would definitely not be helping.

"Thank you, Chief." Shō replied with gratitude. "For now, I'll proceed on my own. I'll make use of my abilities to remain undetected as long as possible. If Shō's intention was to attempt to gather intel without alerting the bandit settlement to his presence, it was a wise one. From his elevated position, he would be able to mostly only see the hidden sentry post and little else. The settlement had been wisely positioned around a bend in the road, which meant that trees would obscure it from the view of most, even if they were on the beaten path. If he chose to move, the Kirigakure Chuunin would soon discover that around the bend there were about ten shelters. They did not look too well-built, but they were functional enough to preserve their occupants from the weather.

As to the numbers of the bandits, Shō would not be able to initially tell, as there was a high suspicion that some of them were inside the crude houses. But one thing that would be immediately obvious was the fact that these people, or at least the ones he could see, were nothing near trained ninja. There were about half a dozen people on patrol, but it was done with little effort. Given the sizes of the buildings, at the very most, the population would not be up to forty, and that was probably a gross exaggeration. The sight of a pregnant young woman laughing with a man whose apparent familiarity with her suggested they were a couple would be stronger proof that these weren't ninja.

They were normal people. A single ninja of Shō's level of skill could probably wipe out most of them with a little bit of effort.

He also sought information about the leader's exact location within the hideout. His aim was to minimise risk and gather intelligence before taking any decisive action.

If he succeeded in spotting such an individual, he planned to move swiftly and silently, approaching from behind and incapacitating them with a precise and non-lethal strike, rendering them unconscious.

His intention was to obtain crucial information, ultimately aiming for a successful and peaceful resolution to the situation. Thus, he tried not to be too aggressive during the interrogation.

Even as the Kiri nin investigated his surroundings, no one was aware of his presence, as they minded their own business. For his part, Shō was able to pick out a bandit on the periphery of the settlement, making his rounds while whistling a merry tune. Oblivious to the hidden shinobi gaining on him, the bandit was not aware of anything until he felt something descend on the back of his neck with sufficient force, and all went dark.

When the bandit woke up, he discovered that he was restrained and in a place quite different from where he had last been. Also, there was some strange fellow gripping his neck. The bandit struggled in alarm as the weird markings ran down his throat. His eyes focused on the shinobi before him, fear and trepidation evident in his eyes. But even then, there was some level of defiance in his frightened gaze. As the shinobi began asking questions, the bandit initially tried to say something false, evident by the fact that he winced sharply.

Suspecting that he had no other options but to give the answers Shō wanted to hear, the bandit revealed what he knew: the leader of the bandits was an eleven year old boy, who had precocious skill in genjutsu and was trained by his living father, who was crippled. They lived in one of the buildings in the center of the village. The major security measure was the well-placed and constant sentries, who, once they saw any approach, alerted the leader of the bandits, who cast a genjutsu on the area that confused all in the area outside the settlement into losing their way and turning back. Which was why the other village had never been able to flush out the bandits.

The Truth Cursing Seal began to take effect, casting a shadow of impending discomfort over the bandit. Under the influence of this mystical seal, any attempt to deceive Shō would result in searing pain coursing through the bandit's body.

After several futile attempts at lying, the bandit's resolve crumbled, and he began to speak the truth. The words he uttered were not what Shō had hoped to hear, but they were the reality he faced. The leader of the bandits was a child - a fact that weighed heavy on Shō's conscience. The child had probably endured a wretched childhood, which likely contributed to his descent into a life of crime. However, Shō knew that despite the hardships one may endure, robbing others was inherently wrong, and he had a duty to put an end to their criminal activities.

After extracting the information he needed, Shō nodded in understanding and muttered a brief apology to the bandit. "I'm sorry. It's going to sting a little." And with that he struck him down swiftly, rendering the man unconscious once more, then carried him back to the village, planning to turn him over to the authorities.

Back in the village, Shō disseminated the critical information he had extracted to the villagers, meticulously outlining his plan to infiltrate the bandit base. He took care to clarify that the individual he had apprehended seemed to be a civilian, primarily involved in theft at most. In a tactful manner, he subtly inquired about the potential punishment the village intended to mete out to the bandits, without revealing his soft side. "I'm curious, what plans does the village have for the bandits and their leader once they are apprehended? Is there a possibility of them being integrated into the village? Hmm, but that sounds a little dangerous..."

After the small talks with the villager, Shō decided it was prudent to take a brief respite. This would afford him the opportunity to recharge his chakra reserves before embarking on the perilous mission to infiltrate the bandit base.
