There was, as there always was, a lot of work to be done. A lot of paperwork to sign, an endless slew it seemed of people to see and missions to assign.

People so often spoke of all the heroic things that leaders did, and yet leaders often sat behind desks, with piles of paperwork taller than they could ever hope to be working tirelessly to bring their nations up. Or at least with the hope that they would grow upwards.

He wanted Mizu no Kuni in the right direction, and indeed it was moving towards that direction, the building blocks were there. He just needed a few more blocks, and a few more pushes to make sure his plans were laid out well.

The Mizukage shuffled some parchment and found Gure Sho amongst the paperwork. It was a flick of the wrist that would send the young man on his next adventure. A letter of request, attached to a dove's leg to fly to Sho.

"Gure Sho,

You are assigned a mission, a request by the Lord Mizukage. Please attend to it immediately upon receiving this correspondence.

There is an island, East of our great village - Yuga no Shima. Much of it remains uncharted, and though we have had luck in inspecting some parts, others are still mysterious to us. There is said to be a deer of an alabaster pelt, find it and bring back a sample."

As Shō focused on crafting a delicate mask for his little sister, the rhythmic tap-tap of his tools was interrupted by a sudden fluttering outside his window. His attention was drawn to a small flying creature, and upon closer inspection, he realised it was a messaging dove in white. The sight piqued his curiosity, and he paused his work to investigate. Gently lifting the adorable bird, he carefully untied the letter from its leg before allowing it to take flight once more. Slowly unrolling the paper scroll, his eyes scanned the contents.

A mix of emotions washed over him as he read the words on the parchment. The message was from the Mizukage, bearing a mission that had been directly assigned by the lord himself. While many would consider this an honour, for Shō, it was akin to a nightmare. He had grown weary of the bloodshed that he often sent to perform, and the prospect of another one weighed heavily on his heart. However, a glimmer of relief surfaced as he read the contents. It was a straightforward hunting mission. With a long exhale of relief, he muttered to himself, "Well, I may not enjoy hunting animals, but it's certainly better than taking human lives."

Yuga no Shima, an uncharted island far to the east of the country, was the destination of his assignment. Shō had always held a fascination for the natural world, its flora and fauna. The notion of exploring the unknown, of glimpsing life forms he had never encountered before, ignited his flame in his heart. Beyond that, the opportunity to uncover the secrets of a place shrouded in mystery, even to the most skilled shinobi, was nothing but excitement. He hoped that his journey could contribute positively to the lives of the people in some way.

With a determined smile, Shō turned his attention to packing his essentials. He meticulously selected his attire for the journey, followed by a compact yet versatile assortment of ninja tools. Gathering enough provisions to sustain himself, he secured everything in his backpack. Before departing, he spared a moment to look at his reflection in the mirror. His silver hair framed his determined eyes, and he carried with him a determination to fulfil his duty.

After what seemed like an eternity of travel, Shō finally reached the eastern dock. The sea breeze invigorated his senses, a reminder of the vastness that lay beyond the confines of the village. With the letter carefully tucked in his pocket, he stepped onto the waiting ship, ready to set sail toward the distant eastern shores. The voyage to Yuga no Shima promised to be a lengthy one, but he embraced the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of the people.

Sho set everything up with a meticulous amount of care and love and was out the gate in due time. The journey towards the shore was peaceful without any bandit encounters along the way, a sign of more peaceful times in Mizu no Kuni. Though Sho's journey would not taken him through the most perilous mountainsides, bogs, or forests of the country allowing for a much more peaceful traveling experience, indeed.

All the way to the West, to Gengetsu, a jewel of a port city that had many ships including ones that traveled to the mostly empty and uncharted Yuga no Shima.

The scent of salt and spices was prevalent here, and Sho would be able to smell it all the mingling of foreign and at times exotic spices, with a calming salty sea breeze.

With his papers in order he was allowed to board a ferry to his destination, with a humid summer wind in his face, catching at wisps of his hair and sea spray soaking into his carefully selected outfit.

It was hours before the ship would catch sight of the outline of the island, and at least one hour more before it docked. The sun was setting over the horizon and the sounds of night were vividly painting a picture of the area as Sho was given permission to step off the ship.

Would the shinobi take pause, rest until morning, or would he enter the den of darkness with only the blanket of stars at his back?

The ship journey had been a rare opportunity for Shō to bask in the beauty of both the seascape and the skies. Well, Shō had been travelling on many occasions but none of them were as relaxing as this one. A not so demanding mission allowing him to marvel at the myriad ships passing by, the occasional marine creatures breaking the surface, and the crystal clear waters that revealed fleeting glimpses of the world beneath. He even gets to enjoy the setting sun, a golden orb descending towards the horizon, casting a warm, honeyed glow over the surroundings.

Eventually, the ship reached the dock on the coast of Yuga no Shima. Night had already fallen, and the darkness draped the island like a cloak. Shō wasn't particularly inclined towards activities during the night, recognizing that his skills and senses might not be as sharp in darkness. After a brief internal debate, he opted for caution and a well-deserved rest before delving further into the island's mysteries. Apart from the fact that the environment was entirely unfamiliar to him, he acknowledged the element of unpredictability that darkness could bring. He didn't want to needlessly take risks, and the dock itself seemed like a reasonable place to set up a temporary camp. Who knew, he might even find fellow travellers seeking respite.

As he sat by the edge of the dock, gazing out at the starry night above, Shō felt a calm settle over him. The twinkling constellations overhead were eye-catching, and he wondered if he could see the same in Kirigakure. With a contented sigh, he rose to his feet and began setting up his tent. However, his cautious nature led him to place alerting tools around his campsite - a web of string that would serve as an early warning system should any intruders or wildlife approach.

Once he was satisfied with the setup, Shō crawled into his tent. He spared one last glance at the night sky before zipping it closed, allowing the fabric to cocoon him in a space of relative safety.

The ship would undock in time and push away, disappearing into the darkness itself as Sho settled down for the night. Whether this was the right or wrong choice would reveal itself to Sho in time. For now, he got the benefit of rest and a cool sea breeze that would push against the heavy fabric of his tent. It was not a quiet night, between the sound of wildlife, the sea and wind. It made a beautiful melody to sleep in though.

Morning would arrive with the eruption of gold over the horizon, and the birds in the trees making themselves known to the world once more. Sho could continue to sleep in a little later or wake up to this dawning morning - depending on how he felt. Either way, light had come and it might in fact be favorable to walk around and explore now. As long as he did not severely oversleep.

The forest was not particularly unwelcoming, the floor was covered in moss and so much of it was soft to move through. There were no beaten roads though, it seemed entirely uncharted in some capacity. Or if it was charted, there were no signs of human lives going on here on the regular.

Animals? Plenty. But not the human variety.

Thirty minutes of wandering would yield a lot of rustling around, and the question would come - was simply wandering around not enough? A new approach would be necessary in spite of the forests beauty.

The melodious chorus of the birds worked as Shō's natural alarm clock, rousing him from his slumber in time to catch the first rays of the sun as it painted the sky with hues of gold and orange. "Well… glad I didn’t oversleep." It seemed like he had gotten used to the peaceful life after he returned to Kirigakure. Returning back to the wild was a little unusual to him but it was something he needed to get used to, since he was not only a shinobi, but a hunter-nin.

Stepping out of his tent, he basked in the warmth of the sun, taking a moment to savour the serenity of the morning. He quickly attended to his personal hygiene with the limited water he had, opting to skip bathing since he couldn't locate a nearby river. The thought of sharing such a public space, even if he found one, was far from his comfort zone. Once he felt refreshed, he tidied up his campsite before stepping to the forest.

From the first glance, it was clear that the forest wasn’t an easily traversable terrain. The forest, like many others, presented its own set of challenges - dense moss, hidden obstacles, and a lack of well-defined pathways. These difficulties, while potentially discouraging for most, was not going to deter him at all. His connection to nature and his role as a hunter-nin compelled him to adapt and navigate even the most treacherous environments.

Through his unique lineage ability, he was able to merge with the flora and fauna, granting him an advantage in travelling. With a single hand seal, he melded himself with the ground, traversing the forest floor like a fish gliding through water. He alternated between these submerged travels and brief respite stops on tall trees, where he could gain a better vantage point to observe and map his surroundings. Although he might not have been a professional cartographer, his experience with crafting masks had honed his hands, allowing him to etch a rough map that captured the essence of the terrain.

As Sho melded with the ground he would be able to traverse the moss and forest quite silently and easy. On occasion if he were paying attention he would be able to see a rabbit or fox rush by. But the forest was providing no quick sign that there were deer in the area, perhaps they were elsewhere or had Sho's mere presence scared everyone away?

The rumors were clear, the creature was extremely illusive and to find it would be a challenge all on its own. But how much of a challenge could it be for a well practiced shinobi of the Oinin Butai? Time would tell.

In the meantime, something might very well catch Sho's attention, it was a little ways away, but the image was distinct. It was humanoid, which was definitely a far cry from the rest of the shapes and images that might have been processed by Sho's underground movement.

Humanoid, but was it human?

It was crouched on a thick branch and appeared to be quite small as if its bones had bent inwards on themselves. But without further investigation Sho would be unable to tell what was going on... If he was brave enough to investigate, of course.

Perhaps such an eerie form would scare him away just as much as peak his curiosity.

Shō's journey through the forest had proven to be remarkably smooth in terms of his ability to traverse the terrain, but it had yielded little success in terms of finding his elusive target. Trees were abundant but not so much with animals. At his best luck, he would notice a few rabbits darting about and foxes on the hunt, but the specific deer he sought remained frustratingly out of reach. Nonetheless, he consoled himself with the knowledge that he had at least created a rough map of the immediate area, hopefully it would help the future kiri-nin who came here for missions.

Just as he contemplated taking a well-deserved break, a sudden anomaly caught his attention. "A human?" he pondered, momentarily perplexed. His senses had not detected any human presence during his underground travels, and he could not be sure if his limited sensory abilities might have missed something. If he wanted to be sure, further investigation was the only choice.

Emerging from the underground, he positioned himself on a distant tree branch, cleverly concealed by the shroud of leaves. From this vantage point, he peered cautiously at his target. If the distance proved too great for observation, he was prepared to employ his unique technique once more, slowly and carefully closing the gap between himself and the unknown presence.

His instincts were tinged with a sense of unease, recognizing that uncovering the identity of this mysterious presence held some sort of risk. Still, the allure of the unknown on this uncharted island was a temptation he could not bring himself to say no.

The figure remained unflinching and unmoving. Perhaps it was a piece of cloth, stuck strangely onto a branch? It was quite bulky, if that were the case. But as Sho moved closer, it did not move in response. It did not speak or make noise. It was hard to really tell what was going on. A protrusion, an animal, a human or something much worse? Or perhaps much better?

Sho truly only had two options at this junction, uncover the mystery of this figure that seemed bulky and crouched upon the tree limb, or leave it alone and continue searching for his elusive target.

Of course there was no telling what this figure would uncover, if it would uncover anything. Perhaps a hinderance, perhaps of help.

There was an entire forest to explore otherwise, and though there was no sight of the deer, there were quite a few spots that he had not touched yet. Though this was unsurprising as the island was quite large and the forest was not a lot less smaller than the island itself.

As Sho approached the figure a strange bugling sound would come from his right, up further into the forest. It certainly was not the sound of a deer, but something larger.

Unease settled within Shō's mind, a mounting sense of caution as he pondered the situation. While a mission to locate a deer might not inherently be considered dangerous, the unfamiliarity of the region and the mysterious encounters he had experienced raised legitimate concerns. The possibility of a trap gnawed at his thoughts, prompting him to tread carefully.

"Is this a trap?" Shō thought, his mind racing to devise a prudent approach. He wasn't inclined to take unnecessary risks, and his instincts led him toward a safer course of action. "Curiosity kills the cat." his inner voice cautioned him, reinforcing his decision.

With a swift series of hand seals, he invoked a special shadow clone technique, and a small puff of white smoke marked the clone's creation. As the smoke dissipated, two identical Shō stood before each other. They exchanged a knowing glance, their intentions clear without the need for words. Shadow clones were among the most versatile and valuable jutsu, capable of taking on tasks independently, affecting the physical world, and sharing their experiences with the original creator once dispersed. It was one of his favourite techniques due to the sheer versatility.

In this case, Shō chose to employ this technique to gather information without exposing himself to undue risk. He submerged himself once more into the underground realm, moving cautiously toward the source of the mysterious sound from the right. The clone, on the other hand, advanced toward the mysterious figure. Even though it was just a shadow clone, Sho couldn't help but hope that it would return safely, as creating even a single clone was extremely taxing.

Sho was being cautious and so in turn, created a shadow clone. It might have been a good thing to do, especially with the strange bugling going on somewhere in the nearby distance. But for now, he wanted to explore this strange figure perched up in a tree who was just seemingly staring down, though it was also just difficult to inspect from a distance what the figure was or what it was doing - staring or dead, or ... what?

The clone approached, the figure continued to not move until the last moment. When suddenly the drab cloth was thrown off and the figure stood up on the tree branch.

"You're here!" It was not really anything or anyone menacing, it was an old man? And he looked like he might have been asleep. He was very short, way shorter than Sho, maybe coming up only to the clones abdomen.

"I've been waiting all night and morning, what happened? Did you get delayed?" He spoke as if he were expecting Sho for some reason. Though whether that was true or not remained to be seen, but he at least seemed friendly and wasn't quite as ominous as he had been moments ago.

Strange that he was sleeping like that though?

"Hmm?" The shadow "CloneShō" clone found himself taken aback by the unexpected greeting from an unknown short old man. He wrestled with the decision of whether to play along or reveal his true identity. After a brief pause, CloneShō chose to be honest, suspecting that the old man had mistaken him for someone else. "I apologise if there's been a mix-up. I am Shō, hailing from Kirigakure. I've journeyed here for research purposes." he explained, keeping further details about himself to a minimum. Extra vigilance and scepticism could never hurt, especially when encountering a stranger in the wilderness as there was no telling who this person might be. To initiate a gentle inquiry, he added, "May I ask for your name and why are you here?"

Meanwhile, the actual Shō remained steadfast in his quest to locate the source of the mysterious sound. Though he had never seen the deer of Yuga no Shima, it was unmistakably not the sound a deer would make. However, his innate curiosity and the potential significance of a newfound creature or phenomenon spurred him onward. Shō made a mental note to memorise the terrain as he traversed it, with the intention of creating a rudimentary map for future reference. While it might not be perfect, it could prove invaluable to those who might explore this uncharted island in the days to come.

"Yes, yes, of course. I know who you are." The old man announced almost dismissively, or perhaps more confused as to why the other was introducing himself to him. He after all knew who Sho was.

"Ah it doesn't matter what my name is, it just matters that you're here and the fact that you stayed out on the beach before coming here, or did your ferry come in late? That navy always works on a delayed schedule." He huffed folding his arms a bit.

"Now, I'm here to lead your rese-" The bugling sound returned, this time a little closer.

"I thought I took care of you!" The old man shouted into the woods, causing a few birds to squawk and scatter out of the foliage of the trees. He was definitely a lively man despite his very previously eerie appearance. Maybe he was just quirky and liked a good bit of a shock factor?

Either way the man scratched at his cheek now and raised a brow towards the boy standing in front of him.

"This isn't the real you, is it? Or are there two of you? I can sense something in the area bring him around, it's kind of rude, ya know? Patience is a virtue, after all, if you wait good things come. See how I waited? And here you are."

CloneSho had remained silent, ruminating on his initial mistake of revealing his name too readily. He chided himself for his carelessness, especially given his job as a hunter-nin and a chuunin from Kirigakure. The situation had clearly grown more complex than he had initially anticipated, and he couldn't help but feel that he had underestimated the mission.

His skepticism regarding the two individuals and their true intentions persisted. The appearance of another person, along with the odd behavior of the elderly man, only fueled his uncertainty. His curiosity and cautious nature eventually prompted him to speak up.

"It wouldn't take long." CloneSho began, addressing the old man and the newcomer, "I would love it if you can just explain to me what is going on and who you two are." He had never been informed of any intermediaries or unexpected developments related to his mission. The mission's objective had been straightforward: find and collect the hide of an alabaster-pelted deer. This new situation raised numerous questions and concerns, and he felt it was essential to gather more information before proceeding.

Meanwhile, the original Sho had cautiously emerged from his hiding spot, positioning himself behind some distant trees and foliage. While he couldn't hear the details of the conversation, he observed the movements and interactions of his clone. It was evident that the situation remained uncertain and potentially volatile, and he deemed it prudent to remain concealed until more became clear.

"Two? There is only one of us, firstly. Unless you're seeing double, kid." The old man huffed in response shaking his head.

"And I told you I'm here to help you with your mission, now bring your other self around. Stop being rude, especially to someone as elderly as I." He shook his head, standing firmly in place. It seemed that the only way to proceed forward would be to simply agree with the old man's demands. Of course, Sho also had the option of simply going on his way alone. But after so much searching in such a big forest he still had come up empty handed.

How long was he willing to spend time on the mission without anything coming up? There was this old man, and while a little suspicious if he had wanted to attack perhaps he had already would have? Though it was ultimately up to Sho how to proceed...

Comply with the old man's demands or continue on his own path in an unknown and frankly mostly uncharted forest area that he had no idea where anything was or how far it spanned.

Certainly though Sho was pretty far inland as the sound of the ocean and sea was nowhere near nor the smell.
