「Mission to the south, huh?」 Shō pondered whether to accept the task. Ever since he'd assisted the property developer in constructing a road for the new settlement in the southern islands, he had been receiving invitations for missions in that region.

Strolling through the bustling streets of Kirigakure, he reflected on why he had originally ventured to the archipelago. It was to get a momentarily respite from the relentless violence of his previous missions. You know, all the hunting and spying as a hunter-nin.

Gazing at the mission poster, he noted that it was a C-ranked mission this time, one rank higher than its predecessor. Shō knew that such missions typically carried some degree of danger, and he had a hunch this one would be no exception.

「Escorting construction workers and merchant…」 The task at hand was to escort construction workers and merchants to the new settlements, safely. It was a given that when wealthy merchants and labourers transporting valuable materials were left unguarded, robbery would rear its head. Were it not for his expectations for the completed settlement, Shō might have turned the mission down. He had promised his younger sister a vacation there once the lodging and park were constructed.

Having made up his mind, Shō entered the guild hall and promptly registered for the mission. To his surprise, he was informed that he would have to work with another genin who had registered for the same mission.

"Eh?" Shō was a little taken aback, but more so embarrassed since he was taking a mission which was supposed to be done by a genin.

"Yup. She's right over there," the receptionist, a strikingly beautiful lady, gestured towards a table in the far corner. "Her name is Gomi, Kaguya Gomi. Good luck." She extended her wishes with a warm smile before returning Shō's identification card.

Taking a deep breath, Shō mustered the courage to approach the table where the young woman was seated. "Hi, I'm Shō. I'll be your mission partner." He was acutely aware of his limited conversational skills, especially after years of solitary work, so he decided to keep the conversation simple. Also, he hoped the kunoichi wouldn't mind his abrupt intrusion into their mission.

BIRDS LEAVE THE NEST How long had it been since she had been sent on a mission that actually fit her sensabilities, which was a nice change of pace. However, given her track record with any and all missions there was no confident bone in her entire body on her going through this. The defeatist in her wanting to not even be here or doing this task since missions seemed to always breed bad karma for her. It was far worse when she needed to converse and interact with other people, though that was with anything and not just missions. Having gotten to the location for the beginning of the missions roughly an hour early to make sure she was ready without any problem, Gomi had taken a seat at a temporary table, or she had for a while, her weight was a bit heavy for the table itself and so she had moved the chair behind her and had been forcing herself to do a squathold for the better half of fifteen minutes and the noise from her armor had only gotten violently louder as she shook like a leaf. When Sho approached the Kaguya's bones nearly jumped from her skin, which wasn't exactly outside of the norm for the clan, but rarely was it due to a fear response to being drawn from their thoughts by someone suddenly approaching. Freezing in place she slowly fell backwards and rolled onto her back as she looked up to the man who had suddenly addressed her. Looking at him blankly as her body went back its natural shivering she managed a short response, "Ah."

Well, the encounter was rather awkward, he thought. After a brief moment of silence, Shō replied with a simple, "Oh...kay." With an increasing number of shinobi entering the building, he made the decision to exit first, as he had an aversion to crowded places. Before he stepped through the door, he informed his mission partner that he would be waiting outside. "Hmm, I'll wait for you outside."

The brisk outdoor breeze took him by surprise, but it was a welcome change from the stuffiness inside. Shō inhaled deeply before settling on an empty bench nearby. While he waited for Gomi to prepare herself, he spent the free time studying the map he had received upon accepting the mission. It was a rather shabby piece of paper, but it contained sufficient details for him to make necessary preparations.

The path ahead was filled with obstacles, including a forest, a river, hills, and marshland. It would have been a straightforward journey if he were alone. In that case, he could have travelled all the way to the port with Ikō, bypassing all the tough terrain with ease. However, their current mission involved escorting workers and merchants. Shō couldn't help but let out a sigh as he meticulously marked available routes to the port with his pencil. He planned to discuss these options with his mission partner later, in order to determine which paths she was more okay and familiar with.

birds leave the nest If her bones were not beyond conventional steel in most instances, Gomi would have leaped out of her skin. Actually to a degree she wished that she could do that, then she would never have to worry about bleeding away to nothing. It really never was going to be her day, and that was... fine she guessed. Life was for the fortunate, and she was certainly not one of those. Just needed to focus on not dying, which was easier said then done. Not that she wasn't going to do all in her power to still keep to it. Standing awkwardly the loudly moving Kaguya shuffled out the door and immediately looking for her senior on this mission. She needed to make sure he was not going to rid the world with her, and she was off to a poor start if that was what she wanted from him. Scurrying over in a somewhat gaunt motion, she was reluctant to engage visibly, as if it was weighing on her more then the heaviest of armors. Something that shouldn't have been the case given that she herself was dressed in incredibly dense bone armor. Rattling audibly as she moved Gomi came to a stop and continued to shake and make noise at a much lower volume as she bowed slightly to Sho, "You had startled me... Sho-Sama. I'll be better prepared going further so please show some mercy..." Such a quiet voice it was barely audible over her armor.

Shō hadn't noticed inside the building due to the dim lighting and distracting crowds, but now, in the open air, he noticed that Gomi was actually wearing a huge and cumbersome-looking suit of heavy armour. Squinting his eyes, he took a moment to double-confirm what he had just seen. Such armour was rarely worn even by male shinobi, let alone kunoichi, who typically possessed less physical strength compared to their male counterparts. The weight of such gear could be challenging for an adult male, so how could a woman endure it?

As he continued to observe, Shō realised that the kunoichi was much larger than he had initially thought — she was actually towering over him! Despite her armour concealing most of her body, Shō could deduce that she must be fairly muscular, or at the very least, exceptionally strong. After a brief moment of silence, Shō snapped back to reality. "Shō will do. Since we are more or less the same age, I assumed." he remarked with a smile. Despite his strict upbringing, he was never fond of strict traditionalism, unlike his grandfather.

"Anyway, Gomi-san, here's the plan I've prepared. Take a look and let me know your thoughts." Shō handed over the map with his scribbled plans and preferred routes, waiting for his partner to review it. If she agreed with the plan, their next step would involve exiting from the nearest gate and heading straight to the destination where they would meet the construction workers and merchants they needed to escort.

birds leave the nest Paranoia took over at first at the idea of calling the man informally by just his first name. It was not out of shy embarassment though, but a figmented horror that was growing inside of her head. Her already pale complexion seemed to grow even more so as he said as much. His followup of calling her formally with a sign of respect further broke her internal hysteria into a sort of winding calculation that lead her to the conclusion that the statement was genuinely just a trap and she opted not to talk at all as she rattled in place. Her trembling seemed natural and unnatural all at once as she shifted around, but her focus was on not missing a single detail now on what the young man was trying to share with her. Fear mixed with the knowledge that this Gure could likely kill her in an instant if she truly aggrivated him lead her to extreme levels of focus. It wasn't in reference to actually paying attention as much as it was to be a pleaser to not make the problem worse. As he passed the papers over Gomi would scan it overall and try to figure out which path he wanted to go the most off the notes and ponder. Finally handing it back to Sho she would speak in the same volume as before, barely audible over her armor's rattling, "The main path seems the easiest path to traverse for the workers and the merchant, but it is the mostly likely to be attacked. If it is as bad as I am to believe about bandit issues then perhaps the less convenient path is the one we should be looking into?"

Noticing the subtle signs of discomfort flickering across Gomi's body language, Shō's mind buzzed with questions. Had his demeanour been too assertive? Were his words too many or too forceful? Socialising had always been the toughest subject he faced despite his earnest attempts at navigation. "Perhaps I should just keep quiet…" Trying not to alleviate any further unease between them, Shō decided to speak less.

As Gomi spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper amidst the rustling of her armour, Shō's attention was fully focused on her. Well, he couldn’t hear her otherwise. After a fleeting moment of contemplation, he found himself nodding in accord. "Hmm, you're right." he acknowledged, his tone laced with a newfound respect for her insight. "Let's head that way."

Shō, never one to relish direct combat, didn't mind the decision to take the safer route. However, he couldn't help but feel a pang of surprise at Gomi's response. In a world where every junior he encountered seemed to exude energy and eagerness for battle, her approach stood out starkly.

As they departed from the village, a whirlwind of thoughts swirled within Shō's mind. "Is she a pacifist like me?" Gomi's character had certainly intrigued him, but he opted not to probe deeper. After all, everyone was different, and it was precisely those differences that made them human.
