Mission Details

With suspicions of likely breakdowns in peace and possible increases in aggressive incidents from the Land of Storms, it seemed necessary that things needed to be put in place in order to make sure that Konohagakure wouldn't be taken by surprise in the event of an invasion. Even though there were many who believed that an invasion from Arashi no Kuni was unlikely, it was such reasoning that caused irreparable defeats in war. Although so far there had been no overt situations of hostility between the Land of Fire and the Land of Storms, Amegakure, the principal power in Arashi no Kuni, was not friendly in the slightest with Konohagakure. And even though the Rain Village was considered a 'minor' village, that was most likely just semantics. Amegakure was worthy enough to be worried about.

This was why some shinobi were sent regularly to the Border Town in Hi no Kuni, just to make sure that there was sufficient ninja presence there, in order to discourage Amegakure from engaging in any activities in the area, as well as to defuse any possible security issues, which for all Konoha knew, could be secretly supported by Amegakure. Uriko had been eager to take on this mission, mostly because she would be working with Senju Miho, one of Konoha's finest, if not the best medic ninja the village had to offer.
 
It was daybreak, and Uriko quickly hastened to the location where she was to meet with Miho to join her on the patrol exercise. Uriko arrived at the rendezvous point well ahead of time. Hopefully this would be a good mission. Uriko had done patrols before, so she wasn't too nervous. But still, anything could go wrong.

Though such operations were normal for a shinobi, it idd not mean that one could become laxed in their activity. Anything could happen when on patrol, and Miho had seen her fair share of such going from peaceful to chaotic. It was the reason why they usually assigned more than one shinobi to perform them, often a senior to assist a more fresh recruit. Not to say that Uriko was any less than able, but there was always more to learn. Yet today was less about a lesson, and more so in ensuring a presence of security for the town. One in which Miho intended to do. It also help that it did give her a chance to leave the hospital for a brief moment and work within the field. An function she at times missed. That was a not a sign of regret, just lack of opportunity. She was needed in the village and she didn't wish to stray too far from home with her children still in need of her. That seemed more of a task for her husband, whom she imagined was at least comfortable with the switch in their roles for the day. If anything, he worried as much about the well being of the twins as she did. But as she arrived at the meeting point, she'd nod her head in the direction of the young medic, a smile on her face while her hands rested in front of her. "Good morning Urikohime..." Holding her smile, she'd release a breath as she began to look around with a calm expression. Everything appeared relatively calm for the time being, yet the busy shop keepers and those preparing to begin their own tasks were clear in the slow rush forming. "I assume you are aware of our duty for the day?" Raising her brow, the Senju would grin before then stretching her arms into the air as she leaned from one side to the next. Uriko did not have long to wait, as Miho soon arrived, smiling as she greeted the Genin. Uriko returned the smile, and gave a polite bow. "Good morning to you as well, Miho-sama," she replied, "yes, I am." Miho hoped for a peaceful mission, a sentiment which Uriko shared. Presently, the two kunoichi were standing at the head of the main street, as good a place as any to begin their patrol.

Uriko took a moment to look around, observing the traders as they set up their shops. From the looks of things, this place seemed to be a rather busy spot, perhaps the busiest in the town, thanks to its central position. If anyone wanted anything, and the town had it, it was almost certain that it would be found in this area. Even though, presently, there weren't too many people on the street, it was very likely that once the market opened for the day, this place would be crowded. If they were looking for criminal elements, such had a big chance of showing here.

The green haired Genin noticed that, while everyone was setting up, there was a fellow who just seemed to be fidgeting with his stall, though he surreptitiously would pretend to be setting up if he noticed anyone looking his way."Miho-sama," the Genin said, making sure she wasn't looking the man's way, "have you noticed that fellow, ten o'clock from your position? He seems to be acting a little suspiciously, if you ask me. Should we question him?"

Perhaps it would have been best to keep such thinking to herself, as it appeared that already things were beginning to develop. As Uriko noted the lack of activity from a nearby handler of goods, she'd briefly let her gaze shift to their direction, making note of their actions. They were clearly a bit jumpy over something, and while their hands were in motion, they were accomplishing nothing in terms of prep for the start of a long day. At the suggestion of questioning them, Miho would hold her hand low for a moment and then nod as she spoke in a hushed tone. "Yes, but lets not make it appear as such. After all, there may be a reason why he is acting this way. Perhaps simply drawing interest in his wares will be enough to find the truth..." It would do little to make assumptions about the man's actions. But still, their task was to ensure that a military presence was known within the area. "Also, if he is not alone, it will make it much more challenging should we wish to find them..." In saying this, she'd then smile as she gestured for Uriko to begin. Miho quickly noticed the fellow Uriko had spoken of, although the Med Nin Chief advised against directly questioning him immediately. There were a lot of arguments in favor of this 'indirect' approach, one of them being that a spooked animal quickly went to ground, and flushing it out would be more difficult. The fellow seemed skittish, and as such, confronting him would be a bit of an uphill task, if the goal was to get him to release information. There was also the fact that he possibly had associates, who would not likely show themselves if they felt they were under scrutiny.

Miho's allowance of Uriko to take the lead was met with an eager nod. Even though she was a ninja, Uriko preferred to solve issues with as little violence as possible. She was already getting quite the knack for communicating with people, and she felt that her powers of persuasion had drastically increased between the time she had become a shinobi and now. "To be honest, Miho-sama, I think I'm a little too soft for blunt force, physically or otherwise," came the reply. "I personally would rather get to the bottom of this with as little violence as possible, and so I'm in absolute agreement. Thank you for giving me this opportunity."

Even as she spoke, though, Uriko held herself as though she was simply having casual conversation with a friend. Miho and herself were both young women of the same age, after all. All of this was to set the stage for what she was going to do next. If she responded to Miho with obvious deference, an observer would probably assume that there was some degree of formality in their relationship (which there was), and formality tended to make situations less relaxed. Suddenly, the green haired girl paused, and a look of some form of recognition registered on her face, before she walked up to the fidgeting merchant, an expectant look on her face.

"Greetings, sir!" she exclaimed. "Are those... could those be dagashi? Do you have the ones from Heiwa?" Her expression was expectant, almost pleading. Apparently just a sweet tooth who wanted to have some early morning indulgence. As for Miho, she would, out of the corner of her eye, see someone just about approaching the merchant, but veer off as soon as Uriko engaged with him. This newcomer seemed to be fighting with his sandal straps now.

Miho would nod as she showed her support in Uriko, letting her lead the way as they began to make their approach. It wasn't rare, but a young shinobi willing to put in the effort to try and find a less intensive solution to a problem was far and few. Though it certainly wasn't the approach Miho would have used when she was starting out to say the least, time had a way of making her less impulsive. But that was a tale for another day. Not to mention, it was hard to not see that they were around the same age, even if rank may have made them different in terms of roles. A learning experience was still just that. As Uriko spoke, the man seemed seemed almost surprised, if not a bit startled by the sudden appearance. He fumbled a bit, but he would attempt to compose himself before then speaking. "Um...well...perhaps...I've haven't had much chance to get ready yet miss...but I'm sure I can go and check...in the back..." With their target seemingly ready to do just that, looking around the cart as if in search, Miho would note the motion from the approaching bystander, who had now begun to divert his focus to his sandel. "Seems like we've got a quick thinker on our hands," Uriko thought, as the supposed merchant fluidly went with the flow of her demand and stated that he would look for the candy she had requested. Even still, she had noticed the fact that he had been startled when she had approached him. Even if the man had not been expecting any sort of patronage, alarm was not the first response of someone when approached in a setting such as this, unless they had some reason to fear. Today was going to be quite interesting. They would each just keep improvising until one of them slipped, and then that would be where the fun began.

Seeing as the man did not have a set up stall, there was going to be no venue to legitimately challenge her if she followed him. Skipping after the man with the childlike air of someone who did not suspect anything shady afoot, Uriko appeared to all the world like a girl who was simply excited to get candy. But her moving after him meant that the merchant had to have the dagashi, or make up another excuse or something. "I really do hope you have that candy, sir!" the Genin exclaimed. "It's been so long since I had some. You're a confectioner, aren't you? I've no idea why people say sweets are bad for the teeth. I eat a lot of sweets, but I've got nice teeth."

While the green haired girl rambled, the fellow who struggled with his sandal eventually rose up, having settled whatever (nonexistent) issues he had with his footwear. On seeing the green haired girl was not leaving anytime soon, he continued his walk, although he had changed direction slightly, so as to put himself on a looping trajectory that would eventually bring him back to some point close to the merchant. If he had taken notice of Miho, he did not show it.

As it appeared that they each had their own targets, it would certainly prove to be a matter of just which of the two would have the better conclusion in the end. Not that it was a competition, but there was a bit of danger that lingered in the breeze. With Uriko already employing her own method of investigation and subtly, Miho would then continue to watch the man as she began to look over the cart with a calm expression. It appeared ordinary in all truth, so the interest in it would have to be revealed in time. Still, it begged to question if this was no more than just a mixup or an operation that ran a bit deeper. Still, the distraction was enough for her to wait till both men were occupied, leading to Miho quickly performing a set of seals, knicking her thumb with her teeth before placing it down in summoning a snake upon her shoulders as she spoke softly. "Follow him..." As Koi hissed, she'd slither down Miho's frame, disappearing into the grass as she began to pick up the trail of its target. This would allow for Miho to remain where she was for the moment, just in time for the man to look up from his stall to check, only to notice her wave before returning his attention to the chattering of Uriko. "Heh heh...well..that sure is something at least..." Either he had only gotten two or three words of what the girl had said, or he was unsure of just what was going on. In the end, he'd pull out what looked to be Dagashi, extending it out as if with some relief. "Here ya go...now then...is this what ya had in mind?" The candy certainly appeared to be what had been intended, but the struggle in which to find it made it bit odd. Most merchants would at least have a list of what they had or something to ensure inventory. "Huh? Look at that! Well...since my friend seems to have such a strong interest in sweets this morning..perhaps I'll indulge as well..." Miho would clap her hands together, her smile bright as she cupped her hand beneath her chin. "Ya well huh?" Nodding, Miho would hold her head low in thought. "Perhaps you would also have Dango as well?" "Dango?...Well..I mean...of course...just...let me look some more..." As he ducked down once more, Miho looked toward Uriko as she spoke. "Thank you so much! I'll be right back! I just need to get my purse!" It seemed Miho was interested in joining Uriko while she engaged with the suspicious merchant. Nobody, not even Uriko, had seen the snake that the Med Nin Chief had summoned, and Koi had slithered into the grass, hidden from the sight of all. As Miho approached, the man found what seemed to be some dagashi, which he offered to Uriko. "Incredible!" the green haired kunoichi exclaimed, taking the wrapped candy with apparent glee. And yet, even though she merely seemed elated to have gotten candy, she had noticed what looked like relief on the merchant's face when he had found the candy.

That was weird. If indeed he was a merchant, he should not have been relieved to find what was supposed to be common fare among his goods. Surely he would have had to know what was in his inventory, if indeed it belonged to him. By this time, Miho had arrived, and seemed equally interested in getting some sweets of her own, this time asking for dango. The man's response was another curious one, as he seemed surprised at what was supposed to be a normal request. As Miho took off with the excuse of going to find her purse, Uriko sighed, playing the part of a mildly fed up friend.

"That airheaded girl," she said half to herself and half to the merchant. "I hope she's not trying to get me to pay for her dango. Ah well...." It was all pretense; Uriko would never refer to Miho with such disrespect. Her attention turned to the merchant again, as she undid one of the wrappers of her candy, throwing it into her mouth.. "How much is everything, dagashi and dango?" As a merchant, he wouldn't have to think to answer that... unless of course, he wasn't a merchant.

Meanwhile, the fellow whom Koi followed unseen seemed to be looking every now and then at the merchant's stall, in the hopes that the girl would have left the merchant to his own devices, but to no avail. His expression began to look more and more bothered, and then he veered off, unaware that he was being followed, to slip into an alleyway, which offered him a good view of the market. If Miho tried to approach him via the way he had come, he would definitely spot her. Also, the grass stopped some distance from the alley, which meant Koi could not get closer without being seen, unless the man was distracted. Still, the snake could easily keep an eye on him unseen from the grass.

"Oh? Well....Ummm...lets seee...." The merchant was struggling, which was a clear sign that his cover was crumbling by the second. It was only a matter of time before this girl realized the truth. He wanted to know where his backup was, but it was clear that he had seen the two and had taken cover elsewhere. How was such a simple job being turned on it's head so quickly? It was too early for customers anyway. "Let me just...check all this in and I'll be able to tell ya..." As he retrieved the Dango and the candy in both his hands, he'd place it down upon the surface of the stall. He'd need to be smart if he wanted to make this work. After all, he was supposed to be the owner of this stand. He just needed to figure out the right amount. Couldn't be too high, couldn't be too low. "Well...since this candy is pretty rare stock, it's gonna be a bit high in price just so ya know...that and the Dango...it would be about...." Ducking his head down at the listing he had found beneath the counter, he'd peek back up with a sheepish smile. "Ten Ryo...." ---------------- With Uriko handling things at the stall, Miho had time to follow up on her current target and Koi. Keeping to the cover of the growing crowd was a simple task, she had done it enough times and was aware of how to remain hidden in plain sight. Such was the case with Koi was well, keeping low to the grass and remaining silent as she slithered behind the man. Yet as the grass path ended, it appeared that her prey had decided on a different route, disappearing into an alley as Koi halted and laid low. She could sense his presence, but knew better not to expose herself. Such was a similar result for Miho, yet she decided that upon noting Koi's pause in movement, she'd take that time to perform gain a better vantage point, moving into a corner as she began to ascend the wall of a nearby building, keeping low upon the rooftop as she peered down into the empty space below. As watched him, he appeared as though in wait, leading to all the more suspicious behavior. More than that, it was clear that his eyes were upon the stand and he could see clear enough just when Uriko's business was done. Such intent was apparent, but why? An eager shopper or a thief? In the end, he was all but cornered now, even if he did not realize it. Yet for the moment, Miho would remain in wait, her crimson gaze narrowed as she watched from above. The fellow in the alley, unaware that he was being watched from two angles, fidgeted uncomfortably as he waited in vain for the green haired girl to leave off talking with his associate. From Miho's hidden position above, she would notice that his left arm kept moving to touch something hidden within his robe, as though he was trying to make sure that it was still there. From the looks of things, it seemed as though this was something the man was nervous carrying around.

Meanwhile, Uriko was quite aware of the struggles of the merchant, though she simply pretended as though she was oblivious to them. One thing she could guess was that with the fellow being so nervous, it meant he was most likely eager to get his task, whatever it was, done and move on with his day, most likely get away from this marketplace. But what did he have in mind? She would take the long route, probing his defenses surreptitiously until they cracked. And one of the ways she would do so would be to waste his time. Nervous people did not like to waste time in the place where they were suffering anxiety.

"Ten Ryo?! Why not sell me for the price of the dagashi?" Uriko exclaimed, feigning outrage. To lay the pressure on a bit more, she decided to attempt ridiculous haggling, in the hopes that this would frustrate the man further just so that she could find and exploit a slip up. "It's just dagashi, and even if it's rare, it looks like totally poor quality stuff," she said sounding rather snotty, "so I'll give you two Ryo for it, and one for the dango. That should come up to three Ryo, and a rather reasonable bargain, wouldn't you say?"

Miho would notice the fidgeting from her target below, a blank expression showing her face before allowing herself a moment to try and make out what it could be. It wouldn't be easy, nor possible, from the angle she was staring at him, though it was clearly on his mind as his gaze remained set on just where he wanted to go. Was it a trade off? Perhaps? But still, this was all speculation. She hadn't seen just what it could be, only knowing that this man was desperate to likely be rid of it. For now, she needed to wait, at least until he made a move. Though it was obvious now that there was more going on here than just a robbery. Perhaps it was time to check on Uriko, leading to her creating a single seal as a single double of herself appeared. As she signaled for them to leave, the being would disappear from the roof, leaving Miho to continue her watch from above, and assuming with full faith that Koi was still awaiting movement from her end. ------------------------ This was getting ridiculous. It was his hope that the girl would just pay the price and be off. But rather than that, she was haggling for a better deal, a low deal as it was. With a frown on his face, the merchant would let his gaze shift to the side, noting the distance as if looking for someone and then releasing a breath of exasperation. "Fine...Three Ryo...but don't go spreading it around that I've started giving deals! I got a business to run!" "Oh!? Sorry! I finally found it! Are you all finished shopping?" As the voice came from close by, the doppelganger made her way toward the duo, her expression calm as she appeared to be holding what looked to be a small bag within her hands. She'd glance toward Uriko with a calm expression, then back toward the merchant with a small smile. "More like gettin robbed...its Three Ryo for the lot of it!" With nearly over three years of medical training, Miho has become a capable physician within the village, adapting to the path of helping to create a healthy and safe village. This knowledge allows for her to use many medical ninjutsu and techniques effectively that can save lives on and off the battle field, and it only appears that she has scratched the surface of just what she can do in the future. In some causes, she can come up with various versions of these jutsus, improving upon them to make them just as effective when on the field.

This only got better and better. The merchant was able to keep his cool, even as Uriko tried to make him slip up somehow. But although he had so far managed not to lose his cool and show any overtly damning signs, there were a couple of things that informed Uriko that she was on the right trail. Firstly, for someone who was supposed to own a business, he was grossly uninformed of not only his inventory, but also the prices of his wares. The other and more important thing she had observed was that most, if not all, merchants were out to make profit when doing business. Few there were, if any, that liked to trade because they enjoyed meeting people, or for some secondary reason. Uriko had offered the three Ryo because even she knew it was a very ridiculous price. And he had agreed to it. In the morning, no less! If it had been at the close of the day, one could have argued that he had had poor sales, and was just trying to make money. But at the start of the day, when profits had barely even begun to be made, this eagerness to have the sale done suggested strongly that he simply wanted to get rid of her.

As Miho's clone came up, and the merchant complained that Uriko was robbing him, she put on an indignant air. "Me, robbing you? Nonsense! As a matter of fact, you deserve to be robbed, seeing as you don't even know what wares you have or how much they cost. Are you even sure you are a merchant?" It was time to increase the heat a little.

Meanwhile, the fellow in the alley, on seeing that the other girl had returned, and neither of them was trying to leave, looked round to make sure no one was looking at him, then edged a bit more out of the alley's mouth, and waved at the merchant as covertly as he could manage, trying to get the man's attention. If the man noticed him, he would wait to see that no one else was looking his way, then pull out a scroll from his robe, point at it, and return it to where he'd pulled it from. He, of course, had no idea that he was being watched, and from Miho's vantage point above him, she would easily see that it wasn't just a scroll, but a bunch of explosive tags packaged scroll-style. Some serious damage to infrastructure could be done with such an item.

"Now look here!" It appeared as if he was ready to go off on the young woman, but then his gaze shifted to the side. He'd see his companion, and not the explosive scroll within his clothes. They were running out of time, and he needed to get this place set up and ready if he wanted to be paid. After all, accidents happened all the time and their employer wanted it to appear as nothing short of a warning to anyone else on the block. Protection wasn't cheap, but it was worth it in the end. "Ya know what? I don't have to take this! You! Can! Leave!" He'd raise his tone of voice with clear anger in his eyes, prompting the clone to lean back a bit as she noticed his brief glance before and then looked back toward Uriko with a calm expression. "I'd imagine that my friend is quite right....are indeed a merchant to have this kind of customer service?" Her hand resting upon her hip, the dark haired female would frown for a moment as she then turned her attention back toward the man. ------------------- Meanwhile, the signs of just what were going on were starting to connect, and while she wasn't entirely sure just what the explosives were for, this man was clearly not a shinobi, nor was he associated with any organizations that were meant to be on patrol. Even if he were, what reason would he have to want to meet with someone with what was essentially a bomb in his clothes? As she could note Koi still in the grass, she'd nod her head toward the snake, prompting the creature to act as she rose up and hissed with clear venom in her tone. The attempt was to scare the man, prompting him to return to the alley upon being startled. Yet, as he would back away, once more out of sight, Miho would drop down to the ground behind him, her expression calm as she narrowed her eyes before swiftly striking him upon the head. While the hit would appear light, it was indeed charged and focused with enough strength to take down a man twice his size. The point was to make him unconscious, not to kill. After all, they still needed answers as to just what these two were up to. Samurai Legacy The Adachi clan was a prominent group of samurai that were established within Tetsu no Kuni(The Land of Iron), before the group transferred a select few to the Hidden Leaf Village as to their alliance to Konohagakure. These traits have been ingrained into the girl very soul as she carries their blood within her. As such, along with the training she received from her father and those in the clan, Miho has developed enhanced reflexes. This allows her to react much more quickly in combat, better enabling her to avoid dangerous situations and defend herself almost instantaneously than normal.

If Uriko was any bit frightened about the man's outburst, she did not show a single bit of it, instead giving him a defiant stare. Still, she took note of the pause, and the way the man's eyes flicked off to the side, and then back to her, as though he had taken note of a signal from someone. While she wasn't sure what Miho had been doing while away, Uriko considered that the Med Nin Chief was most likely doing some investigation of her own, and so did not bother to turn to see what the man had been looking at. Miho was probably on top of that.

Now, the merchant simply told them to leave. "As if!" Uriko shot back. In response to Miho's statement, she continued, "as a matter of fact, I'll just come out and say it here that you aren't a merchant, whoever you are. You either stole these wares, or have some contraband hidden among them, or both. Either way, I'd advise you not to make any sudden movements or try anything silly, while I shall be going through your inventory. And in case you think I don't have the authority to do so...." She pulled out her forehead protector from her bag and showed it to him.

Meanwhile, the fellow in the alley was about to move, when he heard a hiss below him. Eyes swiveled downward to lock with the beady orbs of a snake. The primal mammalian fear of serpents clutched at him, and he stepped back into the alley, his eyes on the scaled creature, only to have darkness descend on him, as a swift blow to the back of his head put out his lights.
