underneath the stars

Traveling to Kuma no Kuni from Kaminari no Kuni overland was no easy task.

Several nations stood between them and their destination, all no doubt with their own colorful histories involving Kumogakure no Sato. With that being said, the most direct route with the least amount of fuss was voyage by sea.

Having signed on for a job with a shinobi of the village, finding passage was a simple task. Some small, unassuming ship crewed by expert sailors to aid in their approach under the cover of night. Uemon had spent the past few days studying maps of the region and the short trip gave him time to look them over again. It paid to stay prepared.

Once they had gathered their gear and boarded, the wanderer would lean against the taffrail near the stern of the small ship. Well out of the way of the busy crew and in a prime spot to keep his eyes on the dark, open water.

Reaching into his back pocket he retrieved a small black book and opened it up atop the map in his hands, jotting down a few notes as the ship slipped its moorings and weighed anchor. Before long they had set sail and he continued on writing. "On a ship again... all I'm missing now is a drunken nukenin." He thought as his hand moved.

Uemon himself was no seafarer but by this point he had spent a decent amount of time traveling aboard ships. It... was not his favorite way to travel, truth be told. But he was luckily spared any seasickness. As his pencil swished against the page he focused on his musings. A small journal entry vaguely mentioning travel to Kuma no Kuni.

Nothing incriminating, of course. After all if they should perish here it was best not to leave any evidence of their meddling behind. "Have you ever been to Kuma no Kuni, Shosuke-san?" He asked the Kumo-nin quietly.

A bit of conversation seemed in order before they reached their destination just past the northern border of Mori no Kuni. On paper their mission read simply enough: find the rare material in the wilds of Kuma no Kuni and retrieve a sample for inspection. Some chunk of a fallen star judging by the intel they had received. An easy task.

If he believed in such things, that is. The two of them were entering hostile territory, so they would need to tread carefully. Seek out the resource, grab a piece, and immediately head back. Hopefully without bloodshed. Though...

...he was not fool enough to rule that possibility out either.

The Land of Bears - it was a relatively small nation in the north of the continent, quite a trip to the west of Kaminari. It was a relatively small and unimportant nation, but even still it had a ninja village and therefore wasn't one that one could disregard. Hoshigakure was a small place with relatively mediocre shinobi all in all, but that didn't mean they could be ignored.

What was even harder to ignore was their sudden influx of wealth, all coming from this rare new mineral of theirs. Of course, considering Hoshigakure was famously built around the original crash-site of a meteor, it was a little surprising to find that they had been gifted by another falling star landing in their territory. Perhaps there was something unique about the country that made these things more likely?

Turning to look at the man he had been paired with for this mission, Sho had to wonder what had caused the Kage's office to invite a wannin like Uemon out on a mission like this. Perhaps it made sense - he was a smith after all, who better to be able to recognize the properties of some elusive star-metal? Even so, this was a deeply confidential mission, they were essentially stealing from another ninja village, shouldn't something like that go to a more trusted member of the village?

Sho knew better than to doubt the integrity of Uemon by now, but he wasn't sure if the Kage's office was able to place that level of trust in the man. After all, a less trustworthy wannin would be able to sell the information gathered on this mission to other villages, and if nothing else that would just make Kumo's place on the world stage precarious. Every major country employed shinobi, but a certain level of trustworthiness was still expected to maintain international politics.

"Me?" Sho asked, a little surprised by the question. "No, honestly never had a reason to - I've been to Kusa and Konoha, even to the Land of Earth for the exams last year, but that's about it. Even if I wanted to, Hoshi's technically an enemy nation. If they knew we were from Kumo, they'd never even let us into port, let alone into the nation proper."

Sho for his part almost looked like a travelling monk, his body covered in a long white robe. Underneath, he was wearing his kumo flak jacket, concealed under various levels of fabric to prevent anyone from being able to recognise it. His hitai-ate, meanwhile, was safely stored within his bag, concealed within an inner pocket to make anyone who tried to search their belongings struggle to locate it.

"Now, remember - Should anyone ask? We're travelers from the Eastern Continent. I'm here on a pilgrimage, and you're my bodyguard. If anyone asks too many questions... well, let's just hope we're not in public should that happen. It's probably going to get very loud."

a lone glimmer streaks the sky

Hearing the doctor speak the wanderer could only nod as he continued to write. "A first for both of us, then." He said, mostly musing aloud to himself. Mention of hostilities gave him slight pause. "Old grudges tend to linger."

Kumogakure's rocky relationship with Hoshigakure he knew of from his studies under Suppa. The first two Shinobi World Wars left quite the impact on the region and of course sparked conflict between the two villages. All of that death and misery could not be so simply forgotten. Old grudges lingered indeed... this, he knew better than most.

Shinobi were not the sort to forgive easily and neither were samurai. Yet another commonality as he saw it. Talk of conflict stirred up some old memories. The cost of retaliation, constant, unending cycles of violence and so forth.

Fortunately he did not have much time to dwell on darker matters as Shosuke spoke of a plan. "That'll do." He said in agreement, looking the young man over for a moment. In those robes he certainly looked like a monk, no obvious insignia of village allegiance just like their ship. For his own part, a sword hanging from the shoulder of a slightly disheveled-looking traveler sold the bodyguard angle quite well. He had even taken a few escort jobs before.

Uemon was a horrible actor but even he could manage the part of 'keep quiet and look vaguely threatening'. With a final swish he closed his book and turned his gaze on the Kumo-nin. "If it comes up, we can say you're from Oni no Kuni. There are plenty of religious types out that way." Monks, spiritual leaders, and other clergymen regularly made journeys from the nation. In Sake no Kuni he had come across one or two during his short stay there. "And if anyone pries too much..." His words trailed as a shout of "Port approaching!" sounded out near the bow of the ship. "We'll handle it. Discreetly, if we can." Only time would tell if that would be at all possible.

Open battle in enemy territory was a losing battle if he'd ever heard one... so hopefully their wits would carry them through here. Eyes shifting towards the waters, he could see the lights of the small port coming up on them. The crew dutifully attended to their work, furling the sails and preparing to dock. Uemon slowly made his way to the front of the vessel, watching with narrowed eyes as they approached. Dock workers, citizens, only a smattering of shinobi standing guard. As far as anyone knew they were a simple trading vessel. Nothing to worry about... yet.

Shooting a glance over his shoulder at Shosuke he paused for just a moment. "Ready?" Soon enough they would drop anchor and be free to disembark. Any last minute preparations would need to be taken now or never.

Grudges last, huh? Wasn't that the entire definition of a grudge? If it was a fleeting thing, a passing frustration in the night, then it wouldn't be a grudge at all. Merely a rough patch.

But he was right - Hoshi and Kumo's history was one of conflict and crisis, deaths on both side and enough bad blood to drown either village's entire population in. Perhaps that was why Kizumi was so okay with doing something as duplicitous as this. It made sense why the merchant guild would want to have the information needed to sabotage and reverse engineer some of the properties of this star-metal, but for Kizumi to agree to it when it wasn't a direct threat... well, maybe she too was holding a grudge.

Regardless, Sho nodded to the other man's suggestion. It was a fair point - Oni no Kuni, or the land of ghosts, was a pretty religious place. It was hard not to be, with the amount of "ghosts" that were allegedly sighted within those lands. With such a constant and pressing reminder of death, it was hard not to become at least a little religious. Even in Kumo, during the plague the numbers of those in cults or associated with the Conciliators exploded back during the plague.

As Uemon mentioned the process of having to kill someone, Sho nodded. This wasn't exactly the first time he'd had to kill someone, but it was the first time that he had gone into something with the intent to kill someone. Not a year ago, he'd been the person who had gone out of his way to save pirates' lives from Miroru during her lightning strikes on the ships in Konoha's territorial waters. To think that he would have become the one going after others, and even others who's main fault was looking too deep into their presence in this territory...

It should feel wrong, but it didn't. Didn't feel right either, it just felt like a net neutral. Not something he was looking forward to, but merely an accepted factor of the job. These things happen, they were an occupational hazard.

---

It took only about another fifteen minute for them to land at the port. The port in question was a small thing, clearly a minor trading port, likely one entirely based around packaging and selling lumber to other territories based on the sheer amount of logs lingering around the docks. It made sense - Hoshi was almost entirely forest, albeit a far less dense forest than somewhere like Forest Country. Still, that level of forest should give them plenty of cover as they moved to the crash site.

"Always."

As the ship came into harbour, a small gangplank was placed upon the side of the ship, serving to let them down onto the docks. Turning to take a small wicker "basket" from next to him, Sho placed it on his head, concealing his identity under the mask of a tengai like some wandering mendicant, Sho's identity seemed to disappear entirely into the role he was given to play.

Adopting and assimilating his new persona, Sho moved down the plank first, bringing forth an air of arrogance and self-importance, one so often find in high ranking priesthoods. Though his outfit made him look like a lesser member of some foreign order, it was always good to consider your "character"'s motivations. Maybe in another life, Sho would have served as an actor in a troupe instead of a field medic and whatever it was Kizumi was grooming him into.

Fortunately, as they moved forwards, it seemed this place was pretty off the beaten track. They didn't even have to present any papers, only pay a few ryo to the one who was handling the coming and going of cargo. It seemed they didn't care to ask questions, and that was the way Sho liked it.

"Come along, fool. The less time we spend around these sorts, the better for both of our eternal souls."

fallen to earth; dimmed

Swaying slightly with the gentle rocking of the ship, the wanderer continued looking on at the approaching port and the figures shuffling about. Gaze already having narrowed as he put on his best 'act'. Brooding and general quietude.

Not all that dissimilar from his usual demeanor. "We still don't have an exact location." He said, turning to face the Kumo-nin. "Let's keep our ears to the ground as we make our way through town. See if the local gossip can point us in the right direction." As the crew tended to the ship's moorings Uemon kept close watch in front.

Doing his best to play his part of the dutiful bodyguard. Looking out for any potential threats, scanning the port workers and the harbormaster who looked busy managing the many goings-on around him. He almost did not catch Shosuke grab a large wicker basket and place it over his head, which only really prompted a slight raising of his eyebrow. Flowing robes, odd and distinct symbolism... "Nice touch." Uemon said with an approving nod.

Like this, the doctor looked every bit the monk he meant to play. From then on out he was mostly silent, adopting a slightly irate glare that a travel-weary protector might wear. He also removed his sword from around his shoulder and tied its sageo to the belt he wore at his left hip. No true swordsman would carry one around like some prop.

Both of them disembarked and he followed closely behind the doctor, making sure to pay the mostly occupied harbormaster his fee to allow for their passage. "Hmph." A discontented grunt was all he offered Shosuke in reply.

'Fool'... something told him that the Kumo-nin got a kick out of that one. All was fair game where their deception was concerned though and the pair made their way towards the port city. Being a relatively quaint and unexciting place, it did not take long at all for mutterings about a fallen star to reach their ears. "Good." He thought.

One man's boredom was another man's valuable intel, it seemed. As of now they were near the border between Kuma no Kuni and Mori no Kuni, so 'north' was a given. But the way that people spoke made the spot seem more central. "North-northwest." From the sound of it, something he intended to share with Shosuke until he felt something. Felt, not saw, three chakra signatures following them from a good distance behind. Strange.

At first he did not pay much mind as any city like this was full of people going about their lives. But these three kept a constant pace. "Slow down a bit." He muttered, keeping his eyes front. Trusting his blindsense to see the same.

Just a bit to see if the trailing trio adjusted their speed to match... and if they did, a tail was more than likely.

Of course, Uemon was right - the merchant's guild told them what they were looking for and they gave an approximate area where it would be found, but since they were the first recon team sent to deal with it there was no chance that they would have particularly specific directions. Not only that, but whatever site had access to the meteor would be impossibly heavily defended. Even if they found it, they would have no chance at infiltrating it.

But, there was a reason why Shosuke had been chosen for this mission - He was a good thinker, and a dab hand at improvised tactics and strategy.

If they couldn't locate or infiltrate the meteor-site itself, they would simply have to go after a caravan containing a shipment of metal from the site itself. Given the amount that they were producing into the market, there had to be quite a bevy of different shipments, and there simply weren't enough shinobi in a nation this small to protect all of them. They had a vague area that it was coming from and they had a map of the major trade routes through the nation.

By now, Shosuke had already planned out just where they would stake out and strike to be able to access what they were looking for. It did unfortunately guarantee that they would have to kill the couriers, or at the very least what meager protection the couriers would have, but if that was the price for this information then so be it.

---

As they walked through the crowd, Shosuke had indeed noticed the three that were potentially trailing them. He may not have the Hyuuga's byakugan, but when it came to total peripheral vision he almost seemed to outclass them, able to keep an eye on them without having to turn around.

Something that was very fortunate as Shosuke physically could not see out of the basket on his head - The ones actually designed for monks tended to have thinner wicker than this, providing a vague albeit clouded vision of the world. Fortunately, Sho had been dealing with blinded eyes for quite some time now so this was merely a new approach to an old issue.

Falling back, walking a "comfortable" pace now, he watched as the three did indeed seem to slow down to match their pace. Well, whoever they were, they sure as fuck weren't Black Ops, they seemed to have very little concept of stealth. More like thugs than shinobi. Although, the more he evaluated them, the more they didn't seem like shinobi either, they had no identifying marks or hitai-ate that would designate them as such. If anything, they were probably pickpockets or the like.

Well, he supposed it was only inevitable that certain lowlifes would see a foreign visitor in a new place and assume they would be an easy mark. The fact that they weren't scared off by Uemon however... well, they were probably braver than your average thug. If they went anywhere out of line of the public, they were probably going to attempt to mug them for whatever valuables they had.

Together, he had no doubt that himself and Uemon could easily outmatch them, even outnumbered as they were. They probably wouldn't even need to use any jutsu. But if someone overheard the mugging, if some good samaritan stumbled in at the wrong time? They would then likely have to deal with an actual member of the shinobi class, and he might actually feel bad about having to dispatch them.

"Keep moving, get towards the gate. If they're going to attack us, make sure they do it outside of the village." Better not to have any onlookers if they had to mete out some street justice.

a heavenly gift

So far, it seemed that they were of the same mind on what to do with their hangers-on.

Battle— if it came to that, was best done away from any witnesses just like they had decided on. If fortune was on their side these three were just nosy troublemakers who would rout at the first sign of confrontation. Though...

...when it came to matters involving himself, luck rarely if ever favored him. "My thoughts exactly." He muttered as they walked. "Unless they're complete fools, they'll wait until we're somewhere secluded." If they were shinobi he had a feeling they would have already struck. Highwaymen was more likely. "Unfortunate for them..."

Always some sort of hitch in the plan. If they were indeed civilians it should be easy enough to deal with them though, and so they kept on their way. Keeping a steady pace as they exited the port town and onto a dirt road.

Minutes passed and as they kept their walking speed steady, the trio of lurkers fell back a ways. Most likely to try and avoid being detected... unfortunately for them their marks could both see without seeing. Uemon kept his Sense active so as not to lose track of them and as the port all but faded from view, miles away from any bystanders...

The three decided to make their move, quickening their approach. "That's close enough." He spoke, his tone cold as he stopped on the road. For a few moments there was silence... then mocking laughter. "Ooh, you think?"

As he turned on his heels, the wanderer's dark gaze was already narrowed. Easily finding the owner of the gruff, derisive voice. A tall man who looked to be in his thirties and did not appear particularly hygienic. "You and Basket Head there look lost... we figured you might need some tour guides." Uemon's face did not so much as flinch, his stare holding as he watched the vagabond take a few more steps towards them. "I said halt." He replied sternly.

Left hand falling to his sword's saya, his thumb coming to rest on its tsuba. "No need for all that, you and your monk friend on your way to see the fallen star? Lots of tourists want to see." No response, only a focused stare as he watched the man move even closer. His other two equally companions appearing equally as shady, but seeming to hang back for now. All of them armed and grinning like jackals. "I just want to get a good look at y—" A sharp chk sounded as he popped the seal of his blade, remaining in its sheath for the moment but growing ever closer to an eventual drawing. "If you value your life don't take another step." Again the apparent leader laughed.

Boldly choosing to turn towards his allies while he gestured towards them in faux disbelief. "Hear that, boys? Sounds like we got a fierce one on our hands." As expected, the man did not heed his warnings and took a step. A hand reaching for a tanto in his belt at the same time... but it was too late. Uemon's footfalls were silent and swift.

Closing the distance between them, drawing, and slashing the mook in his abdomen with a quick Chiburi. Blood spattered on the dirt and the man's legs gave out, his eyes wide in shock as he tumbled backwards and clutched at his side. Instantly his gaze shifted to the other two, both looking surprised and reaching for their respective weapons. "Use those or drop them." He said, his voice calm. "If you run, I'll catch you." Another warning.

Would they heed him now, or were they in for a true skirmish? The doctor's assessment had been correct, they were brutish robbers at best. No need for Ninjutsu here... so he stood, waiting and ready to see what they would do next.

OFFENSIVE TECHNIQUES:
NAME: Chiburi [Shaking Off The Blood]
RANK: B
CHAKRA USAGE: Medium
CLASSIFICATION: Bukijutsu
REQUIREMENT: Slashing/Bludgeoning Weapons
DESCRIPTION:
An iaido strike that gets its name from the act of cleaning one's sword after battle. First the user readies their weapon in its sheathe before rushing forward with blinding speed and slicing their target on the draw. Because of the added power their forward momentum grants them Chiburi can slash through armor and can kill if their aim is true and a vital spot is hit. It is not uncommon that the practitioner will flick their blade or wipe it on their sleeve to rid it of the blood that will surely be spilled if this attack hits.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

KASHIRA-WARI・首割り - ENHANCED CHAKRA CONTROL
Puppeteers must maintain expert control over their wide selection of puppets, and so too must a shinobi with their chakra. Necessary for his Puppet Ninjutsu and applicable to his other techniques, Uemon has trained extensively in order to mitigate the amount of chakra he uses with his jutsu. Compensating for his average chakra reserves this allows him to stay in the fight that much longer.

TSUKURIMONO・作り物 - INTELLIGENCE
Stage and setting can make or break a performance. A director needs vigilance and flexibility to ensure all the moving parts of a play go off without a hitch. A learned strategist with a quick mind, Uemon is always observing even in the midst of combat. This allows for him to find gaps and weaknesses in his opponent's techniques easier than some, and allows him to formulate strategies and deceptions to take advantage of these shortcomings. A knack for tactics cues him on which approach works best depending on his target.

ASHIZUKAI・足遣い - SPEED
Operating the legs of a puppet requires dexterity and agility. Much like moving one's own body. As a child in Tetsu no Kuni Uemon trained in Jujitsu and Kenjutsu, finding his aptitude for speed rather than strength. Honed after years on the road with his mentors, Uemon is surprisingly light on his feet and his hand-to-hand strikes are faster than most expect. Able to strike and weave with deft swiftness he is capable of holding his own against Taijutsu specialists of his rank and outright overwhelming those of lower ranks in terms of speed.

SHOMEI・署名 - SENSOR TYPE
Lighting is a crucial part of any play. Identifying the actors and drawing focus to them in the dark. With much training Uemon has become a Sensor Type, able to detect and hone in on chakra signatures akin to a sixth sense of sorts. A useful tool when it comes to tracking or surveillance. As of now, he is capable of passively sensing chakra up to one hundred meters from his body, or one kilometer if actively searching. This also allows him to more efficiently utilize his puppets without needing a direct line of sight to his targets. Knowing the placement of actors on stage at all times is essential.

Wait, what?!

As the three finally made their move to confront them, they spoke about how Uemon and "baskethead" were clearly here to look into the star. How could he possibly know, the pair had spoken quietly enough that nobody should even have been able to hear them right next to them let alone from how far back the group had been prowling. There was no way that they had heard them talking, which led him to believe that this was just a presumption that they would have had no matter what. Which meant, in other words, that this was something that other people had come here in search of, and quite a number too.

The fact that they knew about their intentions, or at the very least had guessed correctly, and were using the prospect of being able to get guided to the star suggested that it was a service that other people offered. Perhaps his original tactic should be adjusted, but for now it seemed like they should focus on the people right in front of them. Something Uemon seemed to agree with, as with but a momentary flick of the wrist the first of the men was dispatched, leaving him bleeding on the floor.

The two men left seemed almost as if they were frozen in place, unable to move. It was clear that the idea that someone had fought back was terrifying enough, not even mentioning the ease with which the "bodyguard" had dispatched their leader. Sho could tell already that they weren't sure what they should do - if they attacked, they would almost certainly be killed too, but if they ran there was no guarantee other than Uemon's words that he wouldn't just cut them down whilst they were defenseless.

It seemed like it was Sho's time to step in.

"... Is this pointless bloodshed what I pay you for, Takeda-san?" The voice echoed within the 'helmet', disappointment like that of a stern father oozing out of every word that he spoke. "I paid you for protection, to safeguard my life, not to steal life from others. Every life is sacred, even those of lowly thugs and brutes like these. Do you think this act will net you good karma? Your actions betray everything my order stands for."

Moving from his standing position to a kneeling one, he clapped his hands together and took the stance of one praying, murmuring convincingly under his breath as if he was muttering some quiet prayer for the life of the deceased.

Of course, Sho couldn't care less about the life of this thug, but he was playing the role of a monk. He had to at least give a good image of doing actions in keeping with his "character". Plus, the idea of a disappointed 'master' should give the others enough confidence to...

Yep, before he had even finished his 'prayers', the other two had dropped their swords and scattered, leaving Sho to remain in that position until they were far enough away before picking up and looting one of their swords. It was a cheap, tacky thing that looked like it had been designed to appease the owner's ego more than anything else. Slipping it inside his robe, he turned back to Uemon, his expression impossible to read under the helmet.

"I figure that should give more credence to our story. I doubt we're likely to run into them or anyone they speak to again, but if we do they'll probably be telling the story about the travelling monk and his thug bodyguard who murdered their mate.

Now, with that ugliness over and done with... shall we?"

blood spatters the dirt

Presuming that they were here to see the star was a wild, lucky guess indeed. To commonfolk with otherwise mundane lives such events were a rarity. And as they had heard on their trek through the port, the talk of the town.

For a group of ruffians it likely seemed a safe assumption. "Violence is part of the job, monk." He said flatly, keeping his eyes trained on the remaining two brigands. Fortunately his willingness to act had seemingly stripped them of all courage. "Say a prayer for him if you'd like. He won't hear it." Aloof and wholly unbothered...

If ever there was a part meant for him to play, this was the one. That it did not require much real acting was a very fortunate thing for him. "You two." The 'bodyguard' said, tightening his grip on the hilt of his sword as his dark gaze narrowed. "What's this star your man spoke of?" Clanging noises filled the air as both of them finally dropped their weapons and threw up their hands in surrender. "I-it came from the sky not long ago! About half a day's walk from here..." One of their hands moved very slowly to point... to the north-northwest. "As I thought."

Now they had a bit more of an idea of where they were heading. "Go." Uemon told them both coldly, gesturing towards the distance with his head. "Before I change my mind." No further convincing was needed as they ran.

Uemon waiting until they were well out of earshot before flicking his blade to rid it of some of the blood, and slowly sheathing it after. "Agreed. I'd say we played our parts well enough." Shosuke was by far the better mummer out of the two of them. It was a good thing too... because he could not talk his way out of anything.

At least now their farce would carry a bit more weight if they happened across anyone else. "Yes, let's." He said, not sparing so much as a glance at the downed brigand. Killing, for him, was cold and uncaring thing. And by now...

...he had done more than his fair share. An unfortunate hiccup in the road but it was over and done with now.

It was indeed a lucky break that the roles they had chosen to play for this little farce didn't require Uemon to do much acting. The few bits of acting that Uemon had indulged in so far were clearly a bit of a stretch, and the way that he hadn't even bothered to give him a name, merely "monk"... Well, one could hope they would believe it was simply disinterest rather than contemplate things any further.

Either way, stepping up from the corpse of the man on the road, Sho did consider if it was okay for them to just leave the body here. It wasn't a concern he'd ever had to have before on previous cases, but would a monk realy be oky with leaving a body out here to rot and decay on the road?

Well, he would simply have to come up with an excuse later. Every additional second they spent in a population centre like this, the likelihood that the pair would be rumbled increased. So, time to go.

"Shame you couldn't get them to say half a day's walk in which direction..."

---

Fortunately, after the three would-be pickpockets, it appeared that they were able to conduct much of the rest of the journey without problem. They got a strange look from a person or two when they passed through areas or when carts drove past them, but not more than they would get as foreigners anyway. There was no way for them to fully play the role of locals, they simply lacked convincing accents or any of the correct garb, so if they were going to appear as strangers whatever the case it was a good thing they had chosen their role correctly.

After a small bit of walking, the pair would find themselves being pulled up alongside by a man on what appeared to be a ceramic cart. The back of the thing jingled and jangled with the unmistakable sounds of fine china one misstep away from being shattered. The man, a rather old gentleman who was notably missing most of his teeth, shot a pleasant (or as pleasant as someone so unappealing could) look towards them.

"Well lookie here what we've got; a pair of travelers, all alone on the road. Where you going at such a pace?"

Sho paused for a moment, taking in everything given by his tremorsense. It seemed the man was being genuine, there was nothing in the back of his cart beyond the ceramics. Probably looking to do a good turn - it was one of the perks of the role of a monk, even a false one; many people who felt their end coming sooner or later wanted to do a good term, as if to ensure their passage was a gentle one.

"We were heading to the site of the first starfall - It was a gift from the heavens all those years ago, and my people seek to pay proper thanks to the gods once again as we do every year."

The original starfall, the meteor that had made Hoshi what it was. It was indeed a place of faith for quite a few cults, but for their purposes it also helped that the new one wasn't too far away. At least, if their intel was supposed to be correct.

"Well, I've got plenty of space - why don't you two jump aboard?" Sho turned to shoot his companion a look - even with the basket hiding his face, the question was still pretty transparent - should we?

hostile strangers, then kind ones

Watching as the two brigands disappeared from sight, the wanderer rested his left forearm atop his sheathed sword's hilt. At Shosuke's comment he merely turned and nodded towards where the man pointed. "North-northwest."

Enough of a lead to go off of at least. "I meant to say earlier, but what they told us tracks with some of what I overheard back in town." If there were indeed people traveling to see the thing, they were bound to come across other sightseers on their way there. Surely they would be able to glean if they were on the right track then. "Assuming they weren't lying... that'd put us about twenty-four kilometers away." Uemon said.

Making sure to keep a mental note of their rough location as they began to make their way down the  path. All that survival training Hanagisa subjected him to as a boy seemed to have paid off. He was no wayfinder by any stretch, but he had a pretty decent internal compass. Had to, otherwise all of his traveling would be much more difficult.

At least in regards to conflict, fortune seemed to be on their side as the rest of their travels passed without any more excitement. The odd gawker here and there, but no more emboldened highwaymen looking for easy marks.

One slaying was more than enough for his liking, so he appreciated the calm while it lasted. A ping entered his head as they continued to walk and before long the sound of cart wheels bumping along the rough ground reached his ears. Uemon spared a glance over his shoulder to see what appeared to be a kindly old merchant approaching. The man shot a toothless smile at them both as he approached but his own expression remained as stoic as it ever was.

Shosuke took the lead on this one and he simply stood and watched. Trusting the doctor's senses to suss out any attempts at deception. A belieaveble tale about them traveling to see the star was followed by an offer of a ride. He looked to the old man, seeming to squint slightly before turning to the Kumo-nin and nodding. "Sure." He said.

Bowing his head slightly to the man and saying a quiet, "Thank you." before his hands moved to his belt to untie the maroon sageo of his sword. It was hard to sit with a katana dangling at your side, after all. Taking the entirety of the sheath in one hand, he reached out to Shosuke with his other to help him up onto the back of the cart first.

After he was settled Uemon would climb up himself, taking his seat in the back and leaning his sword against his shoulder. A cart pulled by an animal should cut down a bit on their travel time which was most certainly a good thing. Dawn was slowly approaching... and a having at least bit of darkness for cover would help their endeavors.

Sho had to admit that he wasn't entirely sure about this - the offer was generous and genuine and there didn't appear to be any strings attached, at least none that immediately stood out as being problematic. But should something go wrong, the idea that they would be getting someone else involved in all this was a concern.

Sho was someone who's concerns had always been with the common man - It was a trait that the Yamamoto nurtured among their clanmates, this allocentric notion of the common man being just as important as the men in the fancy houses if not more so. This man who was offering them a ride, he seemed like a genuinely good person, or at least one who did good things. Getting them involved in any way with an infiltration mission like this didn't sit right with him. Ironically, he felt worse about this than he did about the prospect of killing.

Either way, Uemon stepped up onto the cart and Sho took his hand, letting himself be guided up and taking a perched seat at the very edge of the cart. It was a small, tight space, so much so that in order to simply fit he found himself having to dangle his legs off of the stoop at the back, but it was certainly quicker and more discreet than wandering by foot.

As much as Sho disliked this, perhaps this was for the best. It helped make their story seem all the more legitimate, though like Uemon Sho had to slide the sword he had taken from the bandit into the cart to ensure that he was able to sit down comfortably. They were just two pilgrims, taking a moment to rest their weary feet. It just so happened that every rotation of the wagon's wheels helped draw them one step closer towards their destination.

As they moved, Sho considered his options a little, trying to adapt to the information they were given. If there was indeed more foot-traffic around the meteor as the bandit had said, they might be able to get a pure sample from the site itself without having to assault a caravan. But doing so would be riskier and made the chance of getting attacked by Hoshigakure ninja all the more likely.

It was a difficult choice to make - A purer sample would be better for the guild, but it would risk their lives and the secrecy of their mission. Whether or not they worked out they were working for Kumo, the idea that any outside ninja were attempting to interfere would put the entire nation on high alert. He would have liked to ask Uemon's opinion, but there was no way they could talk without being heard by the man at the front of the wagon.

"Takeda," Sho began, trying to find a way to pose this without giving away their identities. ", how far shall we push this man's kindness? If we allow ourselves to rest on our laurels, our spirits will be ill at ease. But if you wish to keep the path untread for a little longer, I shall not force this imposition upon you. It is your decision to make, whatever the case may be."

part of the journey

Traveling on the back of a wagon full of goods... it brought to mind memories of another job he took over a year ago. Luckily this merchant seemed less fussy and much less talkative. A blessing, if he still believed in such things.

Hopefully this kind old man would be spared the same fate as those other salesman. No rogues stalking them on their journey just waiting for a chance to strike. At least none that he could feel. Like his companion, Uemon's mind was busy working. Strategies, contingencies, and ploys— always thinking and running mock scenarios in his head.

Of course until they got a good look at the site, nothing could be finalized. But it just so happened that his skillset was perfect for this sort of job. Until they were alone he would hold his tongue... but he had an idea of what to do.

To the Kumo-nin's credit, he seemed to be on a similar page. As the minutes drew on and they came nearer to their destination the two of them would need to hash out details. So as believably as they could, they needed to ditch the old man. "Hm..." He grumbled, pretending to think it over. "You're paying, so whatever tickles your fancy."

A hand draped over the side of the cart to tap sharply on the wooden side. "Ojisan?" He asked, the man glancing over his shoulder at them. "Let us out here, if you could." A nod and a tug on the reins later, and they stopped.

It took only moments for him to collect his weapon and disembark, making sure to 'help' Shosuke down after with a hand. Once they were out he fished around in his pocket for a few loose ryō, slipped them to the man, and thanked him. Before long he was on his way and out of earshot. "Alright..." He turned to face the doctor. "We're close."

Not far at all from the site of the impact based on their travel time. "We can't be more than a few kilometers out from the place, now." Now that they were free to discuss and the merchant was well on his way, he would resume his walking. "I expect some kind of tight perimeter around the star... but we'll need a closer look." That much was obvious, they could scheme all they wanted but until they knew for certain, it was only useful to a point. "Once we're within three hundred yards I'll be able to surveil the site from afar." He said quietly.

Reconnaissance was exactly what he had created Tsuki and Date for. Both machinations were already field tested and perfectly suited for this. "I think we get the lay of the land, then decide on how to move." Surveil, misdirect, then steal was his first impulse. But a second opinion was always welcome. "What do you think?"

Well, that was a relief at least. Shosuke was aware how many of the mercenary ninja who worked in the wilds between the villages were willing to do just about anything as far as coin went, so there had been a minor concern of his that Uemon might have been willing to get the old man involved in some of the darker side of their business.

Of course, had Shosuke stopped and thought for a moment, he would have recognized that such things were very unlikely indeed - Uemon may have been difficult at points, but nothing about him had suggested a taste for the darker, more violent sides of ninja-work. If anything, the man seemed honest and decent to a fault, willing to pick arguments in public over even the most minor of perceived slights. When that was considered, there was nothing to worry about.

Either way, the pair slipped off the back of the wagon as it slowed down, Sho taking a brief moment to feign a prayer for the old man, before waiting as the wagon trundled off and slowly trailed into the distance, leaving the two of them alone, and as such leaving them able to have a far more open conversation about their plans going forwards.

"You're probably right, but we won't know much until we get there." Sho said, his tone amicable yet strategic. "The thing is, considering what those thugs back at the port said? It seems there are people who are accessing the star without concern, and to such a degree that its something people feel able to just talk about inside the cities. I can't say anything for sure, but if that's the case? It would appear we might have a peaceful way in."

The pair walked together, footfalls slow yet light, remaining able to move the moment that they came up with an agreed upon plot. Of course, fortunately both of them were able to see beyond the meagre limits of a regular ninja, making things like surveillance relatively easy, but even they had their limits and right now they were both quite far outside of their range. All they could do in the interim was discuss possibilities.

"I think that's for the best, though of course if we're caught doing anything too suspicious our cover's going to be blown pretty quickly. If you have some way of surveilling that won't tie back to us should something go wrong, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, let's just find a convenient ridge or something to get a proper view of the area."

Despite the fact that there was a ninja village in this nation, it was quite a small and placid little thing so it was probably not the best of ideas to throw around too many summons. Sho had no idea what either of those two things were, nor even that Uemon had such a thing in the first place, so he was just allowing Uemon the choice in how they proceeded.

a moon rabbit stirs

Over the years the wanderer had found himself in many hostile circumstances alongside allies with a wide variety of personalities. He was not averse to working with those who thought differently— in fact quite the contrary.

Variance in his estimation was almost always a good thing. At the very least it allowed for different strategies that he himself might not be capable of. That being said... it was nice to have someone along who was not brash and could think for a change. "Yeah, I think you may be right about that." Uemon said with a nod. A peaceful way in...

If it was true, being able to get close without conflict was all the better. Though putting eyes on their target and actually acquiring a sample were two very different things. "As long as we stay out of sight while I work they shouldn't suspect a thing." He explained as they walked. Date was a bit more... unique. But he would stay back.

Tsuki on the other hand was made to blend in. "Let's find that ridge." Eyes already scanning the environment, he made sure to stay on the lookout as they made their way. As the minutes drew on and their destination neared, both of their respective senses would begin to pick up signatures. Shosuke's no doubt before his own. In total there seemed to be twenty-two individuals gathered in close proximity to one another. Standing in not quite a circle but certainly around something. "Feel that?" He asked. "That has to be place." Either that or one big camping trip.

Uemon's ryō was on the former possibility. "Let's get off the road for now— over there." Nodding towards a grass-covered knoll in the far distance that looked to be opposite the suspected site. Convenient just like the doctor said and it would suit their purposes fine. Still stepping lightly he would slink off the dirt path, circling the long ways around through the wooded terrain just in case any sentries were on the lookout. One could never be too careful.

Approaching from the back of the hill, Uemon unzipped his jacket, revealing a holster on his hip that he wore just a bit higher than he normally did to better conceal it. Swiping two small scrolls from it he would crouch low and unfurl them, placing a finger each on two kanji that read '兎' and '蛙' respectively. With a bit of chakra two animals were summoned forth with the Kugutsu Kuchiyose no Jutsu in puffs of smoke— a white rabbit and a rotund green frog.

The wanderer would roll the scrolls back up and return them to their holster, taking just a moment to check over the small creatures. "These are my reconnaissance puppets." He said quietly, tapping a button on the frog's stomach as a small round screen there flickered to life. Uemon also made sure to adjust the volume to make sure it would not give away their position. "The rabbit's the transmitter and the frog's the receiver... with these we'll be able to hear and see what's going on." Once they were activated Uemon would flex his right hand, several faint blue glows emanating from his fingertips. Thin, nigh-imperceptible threads emerged and attached themselves to Tsuki's body. With a swish of his fingers the rabbit bounded away. "We should be just within range..."

Up and over the hill, looking every bit as lifelike as the real thing. "I'll get a visual on the star itself." He said, keeping an eye on the frog's screen to help guide Tsuki via the Kugutsu no Jutsu. Both the camera and microphone were not especially high-fidelity but they would serve their purpose. "You told me once that your sense can detect the outline of things, right? Can you tell how many of them are armed?" He asked the doctor, keeping his voice low as he directed the rabbit towards its destination. Through some underbrush on the opposite side of the road and having it flank the site so as not to run headlong into any sentries. "Just a little further."

On the screen he could see a small clearing come into view with multiple people moving about. Civilians, workers, and a small contingent of shinobi from what he could make out. "There's our target." Uemon mumbled, the rabbit's eye camera moving to face an object in the center of it all. Roughly spherical, small, and guarded. "We have at least five shinobi closely surrounding the thing." Anyone not wearing a hitai-ate was kept at a good distance by a roped-off area around the object, likely to deter any unwanted touching. "...anything about relief?" A bit of garbled chatter came through on the frog's speaker. "Within the hour, they said." Another voice responded.

The wanderer's eyes narrowed a bit. "Sounds like they're about to change shifts..." If it was the case, their enemies' presence was about to double. "They're keeping tourists well away from the star." Uemon relayed to Shosuke, turning for a moment to glance at him. "If you can cause some sort of a distraction among the crowd I could have my puppet go in for a sample... otherwise I'm open to ideas." Confuse, misdirect, steal.

It was his initial thought, and since the doctor was a decent actor he had no doubt he could pull something like that off. But they were a team after all and any feedback would be welcome. Rushing in unprepared would be foolish but time was also short. Whatever they decided on, they would have to do it fast before this 'relief' of theirs showed up.

OFFENSIVE TECHNIQUES:
NAME: Kugutsu no Jutsu - [Puppet Technique]
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Very Low [Continuous]
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu [Puppetry]
ELEMENT: N/a
DESCRIPTION:
The fundamental and most used technique of the style, Kugutsu no Jutsu allows a puppeteer the ability to use puppets in battle. While the degree in skill determines the number of puppets that can be controlled, for starters the user can control only one. By making near invisible strings of chakra from each of their ten fingertips and attaching them to their puppets they are able to control the puppet from various distances. However there is a delay between the puppeteers orders and the puppets movements, meaning puppet movement will not be instantaneous, and the response time increases based on distance.

SUPPORTIVE TECHNIQUES:
NAME: Kugutsu Kuchiyose no Jutsu - [Puppet Summoning Technique ]
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Low
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu [Puppetry]
ELEMENT: N/a
DESCRIPTION:
A useful technique for puppeteers, it allows one to seal a puppet within a scroll and summon it at will on the battlefield. Depending on the scroll they seal it in, they can seal a number of puppets away at a time.

SPECIAL ABILITIES:

KASHIRA-WARI・首割り - ENHANCED CHAKRA CONTROL
