Perimeter Patrol Mission Rank: C NPC Required: Yes Random Mission Scenario: Enabled Participants: Netsu Midori & Ono Kenji Description: Villages always need shinobi to do routine patrols around their perimeter to make sure that no significant threats are developing outside of the walls. Shinobi complete this mission by eliminating threats within a mile radius of the village be they dangerous animals, bandits, or worse. Note: This mission is repeatable and each village can have one such mission going at a time.

To be frank, Midori was becoming increasingly paranoid with the attention she was getting. First was Yukari, then Etsuko, then Hotarubi, and now even the Jonin Hancho was apparently taking an interest in her development. At least it was also in the form of a mission and not something like a spar. She was still a little bruised under her black and green catsuit from the spar with Hotarubi, but that was to be expected from a Chuunin that was quite skilled with Taijutsu and Ninjutsu, particularly a Yamakira. At least her face had been left without any serious marks, as it would have shown pretty badly on her pale skin. As it is, she's standing outside of the false Takigakure no Sato, preparing herself physically and mentally for the sweep of the perimeter with the Jonin leader of the village. She had already wrapped the weighted Hung Gar rings around her wrists and ankles, preparing herself just in case they came to any trouble. She didn't want to be caught unprepared if they ran into trouble, although she didn't think there was much likelihood that there was anything in Bonchi no Kuni that Kenji couldn't handle.

The Genin flips her lustrous black hair over her shoulder, arching one of her thin black eyebrows over her neon green eyes as she scans the people moving in and out through the Takigakure gates, although these gates were simply for the decoy village. Not that any of the other villagers knew anything about that. She got the occasional look and even a stare or two from some of the civilians, but she mostly ignored them, too busy keeping an eye out for the familiar face. She'd never met him personally before, but his face would obviously have been familiar to nearly every ninja in Takigakure. She also takes a moment to make sure she looks okay, and yes, even the black lipstick that covered only her upper lip was just right, so she wasn't too caked with makeup and she wasn't also too terribly plain.

Just then she turns again to go back on the lookout, and there she sees him. Like a tower with a flashy red light at the top, at over six feet tall, he was quite visible, at least walking about with a group of villagers like this. She thinks his red hair might actually be longer than hers. Not that it matters. Her tone might be rather informal, but at least it wasn't one of her usual insults.

"Over here, boss!"

Another day, another field assessment. Kenji had his schedule full of those as of late. It wasn't much of a bother of course, it was part of his job to keep a close eye on the shinobi and kunoichi of Takigakure and getting a first hand idea of their capabilities was his preferred way of doing so.

The job today was easy enough. A simple perimeter check of pseudo Takigakure and eliminate any threats found along the way. Kenji, of course, had every intention to find such a threat, and allow the genin he assigned to the mission to deal with the confrontation, only intervening if he felt she was not up to dealing with the threat herself.

As he left the gates of the fake village and headed to the meeting point, it wasn't too long before he heard a voice calling out to him. His gaze fell on the pale woman, his expression left as a blank, emotionless slate upon his approach.

"Midori," He said plainly, his eyes moving up and down her figure in a quick glance. He took in a sharp breath through his nose, his chin raising slightly as his piercing red eyes looked her emerald greens.

"I hope you've com prepared. Today, I'll be giving you a field assessment to better understand where you are in your abilities. What you can do, how you act, you know the deal." Kenji spoke rather matter-of-factly about the situation, maintaining his gaze on her before he turned to the horizon. "You'll be taking the lead today. You may use me as a resource, if you wish, but I would prefer to think of me more like your bumper rails than someone simply watching over your shoulder." His hands drifted into his pockets, turning back to the woman as he looked over his shoulder. "We can begin at your ready."

Midori was actually a bit surprised that the Jounin Hancho even knew her name, then felt very dumb for just a moment. Of course he'd know her name, it was another field assessment. If it wasn't Kenji, she might have told him that she'd already done the field assessment with Yukari, but then again, that had been a D-rank mission. A C-rank mission would obviously be more challenging for a Genin, and might actually get her to show off some more combat abilities. So she figures it's better to get the C-rank mission done and maybe even show off a little. She does notice his eyes looking over her, probably making sure she still had the Takigakure headband loosely tied around her neck as well as the weapon pouch on her hip before their eyes met.

"Got it. You won't have to lift a finger to help me today, so I hope you're fine with being bored out of your head."

These were somewhat boastful, but if Midori's face and body language are any indication, she's seriously confident about her combat abilities. After all, she'd almost actually gone toe-to-toe with Hotarubi. Well, with him only using Taijutsu and restricting himself from Ninjutsu, and her being allowed to use both. She was allowed to gloat a little at least for that. As it is, though, she gestures away from the entrance of the faux village, to the west, simply so Kenji is aware of which direction she's going before she heads off, travelling west as directed from the gates. She keeps both her hands at the ready, not balled up into fists, but prepared for handseals or to pull Kesshoton chakra from her core for a quick Hot Slap to anything that might wander too close. She wasn't pulling any of that Plasma Release chakra just yet, but she knows that some of the wild animals that avoid the faux village gates won't easily pass up a treat of two humans that have wandered from the usual road. Her green eyes were constantly on the move around herself, and her ears were listening so intently that she could actually hear the buzzing of several insects around them. At least she's moving somewhat swiftly and keeping her back to the wall as much as possible. Most of the animals that did hunt humans saw an open back as a great target, and she knew this well enough.

A small smirk trailed acrossed Kenji's face with Midori's remark, finding himself rather curious of the woman's confidence. Looking over her previous mission reports, he had not seen much that would indicate to him whether or not this confidence had any true purchase, but regardless, he was at the very least amused by it.

Following Midori through the wilderness was, for better or worse, less than exhilirating. While he wasn't, as she put it, "Bored out of his head" entirely, there wasn't exactly much for him to do other than follow the woman, watch, and take his own mental notes. Their scan of the parimeter was going relatively well, with the two covering ground making optimal time doing so. while most likely would have wanted to fill the silence with small talk, Kenji simply was not that man. He hated small talk, to be frank, and "getting to know someone" was quite far from his typical set of interests. He knew enough about Midori from her reports, and asking the woman about her dreams or aspirations, why she became a kunoichi, what her hobbies were... It all just felt far more boring than the silence between the two.

He knew deep down that his outlook on such things was likely far from the ordinary. He was a "serious" man with a "serious" career, and he simply had no interest in making familial bonds with those beneath his status. It was nothing personal to the Netsu woman, but creating bonds with other ninja in a life like this... He just felt it was far easier not to.

With his thoughts staying on task far more than anything else, Kenji had begun to feel something tugging in the back of his mind. It was almost as if the two of them had started being watched. But, whether that was simply his instinct betraying him or an unfound truth had remained to be seen. The red haired shinobi slowed, bringing himself to a halt as his eyes began to shift through their surroundings. He made no indication to Midori on the matter, hoping that she herself was able to get a sense for the same thing Kenji had, or at the very least, that she would notice or ask what exactly her partner on this mission was doing.

[Netsu Midori]

Thankfully, Midori is walking with her back towards the wall surrounding the outside of the fake Takigakure village, so when Kenji himself stops, Midori can pick up on the sudden change in motion in her peripheral. She stops as well, then turns her head to look at the higher-ranking Jounin, focusing on him to see what might be up. She has a fairly confused look on her face, and is about to ask him what's wrong, then realizes that she might be interrupting him when he's trying to listen or look for something. The Genin instead moves closer to the older ninja, her own senses on high alert.

It's in this state of focused listening that she realizes something she hadn't before: while they had come this way, the bugs had been giving off their telltale buzzing noises, but now they had fallen completely silent, perhaps signifying that something was nearby that was driving them off, perhaps a human they didn't like the scent of or some great beast that even they wanted nothing to do with. Whatever it is, it's probably bad business.

Midori's eyes turn back away from Kenji again and she performs four handseals in a rapid motion as she channels Kesshoton energy to both her fists, causing them to light up in a neon green glow that matches the color of her eyes as she prepares herself for a fight.

"If you come out now, you'll at least die quickly..."

The Genin mutters more under her breath, not entirely sure that whoever or whatever is out there has actually caught sight of them yet, but she's not taking any chances and getting herself ready before the mysterious thing has a chance to try and pounce. The sense of danger fills the air now, a pregnant silence while they wait to see what could be out there, just out of visible distance for them.

DESCRIPTION:

Rather than expelling the Kesshoton element quickly in order to damage the opponent with a blast, this technique allows the user to cover both their hands in Kesshoton energy, causing them to glow with erratic plasmic energy that can add a concussive component to their physical strikes with their hands, increasing the power caused by their Taijutsu strikes to a level that matches the amount of chakra usage of the technique. Although their hands have a high level of absorption, absorbing such a large amount of electrical energy requires an equally high amount of chakra from the user in order to contain the energy until it can be released through Taijutsu. After absorbing that Raiton chakra or electrical energy, the chakra usage for the technique increases from Medium to High in order to keep the energy absorbed under control for further use of the Atsuki Ken.

Kenji grew a small smirk on his face as he watched the genin. She flashed a few quick hand seals before her clans energy washed over her hands in a neon green glow. She was quick and at the ready for a fight, readying herself in a low stance. He admired the woman's eagerness. Takigakure prided itself on the strength of their forces, with power and dominating force being threaded into their very culture. But, Midori would need more than eagerness to pass this test.

With her attention drawn out to the surroundings, Kenji took in a deep breath, closing his eyes and forming a single hand seal before he would disappear from sight.

Stillness settled over the area, an earie silence soon choking out the life of the jungle. No birds, no crickets, not even the breeze could be heard as the seconds began to pass like hours.

Kenji still would not reveal himself, using the shunshin technique to vanish and put himself in hiding. Midori would need more than a keen eye on her surroundings to see him, but he hoped the distraction he had put in place here would be enough to take her attention away from searching for him.

Hours earlier, Kenji had created a Shadow Clone of himself to wait in this very spot, and it was now time to put that pawn back on the board.

Four shuriken would fly out from the Northeast, coming from the treetops. Though they were aimed at Midori, the intent of these projectiles was only to force her movement rather than wound the woman. Assuming her attention would be drawn to the origin of these Shuriken, Midori would find a single, solitary figure, standing amidst the trees, with a black cloak concealing their face and body.

[Netsu Midori]

Midori is a bit surprised that Kenji suddenly disappears from view, but she figures he's only trying to keep out of sight in order to see how the Genin handles the situation alone. She immediately dismisses him mentally, so she can more calmly and intently focus her attention on her surroundings as she keeps the Kesshoton chakra flowing through her fists.

Midori catches sight of the four shuriken as they fly towards her, but doesn't immediately recognize that the actual intention of such shuriken was to force her to move, and so she ends up doing so, using her agility to leap off the wall and directly into the air, over the shuriken and moving quickly towards the treeline. While the weight of the Hung Gar rings are sure to keep her from actually reaching the branches, she's able to smash her fists directly into the tree, breaking through the bark and into the heartwood where the Kesshoton chakra releases its concussive force inside. The power of such a disruption is sure to make the tree start to falter and gradually begin its descent into the ground. The Genin is quick to tug her hands out of the wood before it can start to come down, saving her hands from being crushed under the weight and keeping the Atsuki Ken technique active.

Although she was certain of the origin of the attack, she quickly turns her back to the tree, trying to make sure that it's still difficult to sneak up on her and take her by surprise. Although she could possibly take on most of the animals or bandits that usually make up the biggest threats in Bonchi no Kuni. She hadn't really expected shuriken; those weren't common among bandits, and so she had to assume that she was facing off against another ninja, which put her on alert even more than before. Midori takes on another bent knee fighting stance, preparing herself to ruthlessly attack whatever might be hiding from her.
