Souma had no intention of slowing her offense, much less stopping.

A quick analysis of the situation showed a promising result. The Ishigakure were seeing to their own, letting Ryoko bog down- literally- the small horde chasing her through the skies. Isamu was working with the massive war beast to take on the increasingly concerning puppet that was now on fire and drastically improved as far as speed went, and Himari was fending off those she had been surrounded by.

Time to get serious.

Souma flashed a single hand seal and in a puff of smoke, a second Souma appeared beside her, already running off towards Himari to aid her as she took on the trio of Skavengers. The original performed a small set of handseals, culminating in a churning spike of Suiton forming around the end of one of her steel cables- a Water Scalpel forming around it as she lunged towards Isamu and aimed a sweeping, narrowed strike from the side, attempting to slam the water-bladed cable into the flaming heart of the second tripod in an effort to get the pressure off of Isamu before he or the elephant was injured!

With much the same focus, the petite armored medic was mostly aiming to assist, the distance between her and Himari meaning that her efforts in the immediate would be focused on intercepting any blows aimed at Himari, should her efforts not lay out the nasty puppets as fast as they all hoped!

Used Shadow Clone to make a second Souma to go help out Himari, using Ame (Rain) to deflect blows meant for the Okada, and used Water Scalpel on one of her cables to try to spike it through the flaming core of the tripod Isamu is fighting!

Immortal Machine: Right on Time

Support Squads Arrive at Coordinates

Unable to water walk and failing to hit the floating kunoichi. The puppets would of changed their attention to the Ishigakure shinobi. Only to be stopped midway by their terrain suddenly changing into that of a swamp, it'd aggressively pull them down into the ground. This wasn't a major concern to those that didn't breath, but they'd still struggle against the earth. Attempting to spread themselves out and swim against the earthen flow. Buried in the present, but certainly not likely to be dying because of it. Certainly dealt with right?

Noting the complete escape from any pressure to assist the Iwagakure shinobi who saved his downed men, the head of the Ishigakure forces would wave the two men who're try to recover themselves. They'd tiredly rush over and take over looking after the two unconscious men. The man in his earthen armor would turn his attention now to his last man who was fighting against scavengers. Rushing up on one of the immortal machines, he'd catch them off guard caught watching the burning larger puppet. This opening allowing the man to get a relatively easy decapitation with his weapon. The swing enhanced by his earth armor and the blade enhanced with hein.

Isamu would register the speed and thus power boost in the dying puppets attack. He'd move to save the elephant fighting beside him, it'd be quite the blow and he'd certainly feel it straining in the block. However his skill allowed him to more or less perfectly position the blade to resist any damage. It's superior material seeming to show through too, as the heated strike would leave a chip in the massive puppets halberd. The elephant alerted of the danger would lean in it's head next to Isamu, it's trunk reaching to one of the three legs. Twisting it up and trying to yank it up against the natural set of it's now heated and damaged joint.

It's blinking eye hidden by flames roaring up through it's bodies shape. A mixture of fire and smoke glaring at both the elephant and the shinobi. It'd however finally meet it's end, as Souma joined in and added a dose of water to her relatively powerful steel attack. The puppet being held up by the elephant and locked in Isamu's block, it'd create extra tension to make the blow that much more significant. Breaking off the leg the elephant held, as well as detaching the final arm from the body. It's whole frame and core cracking from a sudden change in temperature.

There'd be now only Scavengers to fight, Himari juggling three at the moment, while the two still fighting Ishigakure shinobi were doing the same to a more tired degree. Himari would continue to be successful in throwing one scavenger into the next, but they'd seem to start picking up on the tactic. The target of the throw shifting to catch their immortal comrade, as to get back into the fight. Without words they'd show some degree of intelligence. Switching up her tactic Himari would once again more or less succeed in her attempt. Focused on one scavenger and still vastly out skilling it, she'd be able to force it's claws into itself. They were for flaying flesh and not steel though, so they'd just rake across it's body uneffectively. Though they'd likely be duller with each unnecessary swipe. Any attempt to beat these three would suddenly become even easier, as a clone of Souma would join the Okada.

Chakra Cost Notice: Due to the length of distance travelled, the cost of actually using any jutsu would add up more than the cost I listed. So even if you ended last rotation using a different means to travel, the cost I laid out is all you actually paid. HOWEVER; if you used any jutsu prior and don't deactivate it upon arrival to keep going, it'll be assumed the cast is paid that rotation instead of simply charged the maintenance. Similarly any jutsu that's cast and activated later will still be charged. Otherwise, if you just flared up your travel simply take the medium cost + shunshin use or additional low if applicable.

”Well that’ll do for now..” she mutters, her smirk growing as the scavengers all sink into her mud. Even if it did not kill them, it served its purpose. By the looks of things her allies would be finished with the remaining puppets and regrouped before they could cause any more problems.

Assuming they could escape the mud in the first place.

A quick burst of her jets zips her back across the battlefield, the successful kunoichi sweeping her eyes across the rest of the carnage as she goes. Her vantage gave her an excellent view, and no one seemed in immediate danger. Well, the enemy did, but that was okay. They were supposed to be in danger.

Seeing no need to fall back to far, Ryoko makes a slight change in her plans. Jets cut out early, her light weight rock technique slowly tapering off as increasing weight lowered her from the sky. She sets her feet down on the solid earth once more a short moment later, landing beside the two downed Ishi nin. A little wave of her hand draws the doomstar down with her, leaving it resting on her right shoulder as it usually is.

She gives a small laugh, almost a cackle as she pats her weapon and gives a look down at the destruction her allies have been producing. Good times!

"Ha!  Stupid robots, not smart enough to break and run”, she mutters to herself, her right hand busying itself with a scroll tucked into her pouch. She draws it out and unfurls it, three puffs of smoke releasing three huge wooden shuriken unto the ground beside her. With her windmills spent and sinking she figured she should rearm herself with better means to slay. The Mercystars were just that.

Big, heavy, and while not very sharp they are all quite capable of crushing bones rather easily.

There was a level of visceral satisfaction to plunging the Suiton-charged cablespear into the heart of the burning puppet and getting such a reaction as the rapid flux in temperatures cracked its core in a heartbeat. Whipping the chakra-charged cable back out, Souma left the other combatants to handle the trapped puppets ensnared in Ryoko's swamp, instead moving away as Isamu and the elephant disposed of the last big terror, instead heading towards the downed and injured Ishigakure forces There, she took a moment to survey their conditions, focused on performing triage and identifying anyone in life threatening condition and in need of chakra reinforcement or immediate medical care.

Meanwhile, her clone focused on aiding Himari's assault on the trio of puppets she was engaging. As the thrown puppet was caught by its comrade, and their third was treated to the worst manicure of all time, Souma's clone came up behind the one that had caught its compatriot, whipping her leg up for an instant before slamming it down in an axe kick that threatened to crush one or both straight into the earth beneath them!

No need to fix what's not broken, after all, right? If smashing them to pieces is working, the medic saw no need to stop now.

[Kita Isamu]

The impact of the puppet’s halberd jolted Isamu’s arms enough to hurt quite a bit, though he took grim satisfaction in watching his blade take a chunk out of the Halberd. The elephant had noticed his predicament, finally, and grabbed a leg on the puppet just as Souma came crashing in to take it down with one final blow. Seeing the large puppet finally fall was worth the effort, and Isamu allowed himself only a brief moment’s respite. He took a moment to stare at the puppet, considering, before reaching for the halberd it’d dropped as it went down. The weapon was utterly massive, and heavy enough to give him some pause, but if anybody in their group could wield the thing, it’d probably be him.

Instead of keeping it out, though, he’d seal it into his body seals for later use. Even damaged, a weapon that heavy would more than likely serve perfectly well to use on bigger enemies, and backups weren’t a bad thing. That done, he grabbed hold of his own katana once more, deciding to keep the weapon he was more familiar with out for now. Besides, any puppets that were still left weren’t big enough for him to worry about half as much when he had his katana in hand. That bigger puppet may have been hard to take down, but the smaller ones didn’t have the advantage of being elephant sized tanks.

InitiationImmortal Machine Oh hell ya!"" Master of Puppets While Himari didn't remember calling out for assistance, it certainly was a most welcome sight to see the Souma clone moving in upon her position and aiding in what remained of the three scavenger puppets. Though with their weapons becoming far more dulled due to her action, they didn't seem ready to give up the ghost just yet. But, at the very least it wouldn't be as dire as before. Still, this was at least some further insight in how to deal with these machines in the future. Though the focus in keeping things in the now was to eliminate them and proceed to assist the remaining Ishigakure forces. As she watched it crush one of the puppets beneath an axe kick, the blonde would smirk before then look at the remaining two, nodding it's direction as she moved in swiftly. Their weapons dullness would make it so that she'd at least now have more of a chance of getting out with less hazardous wounds, but it didn't mean caution was completely to the wind. "Follow my lead then!" In creating two hand seals, electricity would begin to surge through her body, pulsing down to her legs as she left sparks in her tracks. In drawing closer to one of the remaining Scavengers, Himari would leap herself upward, using her irregular dodging to place one hand upon it's arm as a platform. From there, she'd extend her electrified limb sideways, aiming to crash her leg into it's neck. In an effort to stun or at least daze the creation, she'd then take hold of the monster's shoulder, pushing herself over it to it's back. Yet, in spite of this, she would always come up with a way to win in the end, despite being at the disadvantage. More often than not, this serves as her means of protection in it being difficult to hit a someone that you can't accurately engage against. Though it operates on her instincts, it can be unreliable in some situations. Especially if Himari has not been able to figure out the exact anatomy of her opponent. Heart of a Champion During her run within the OWA, Himari would train constantly to build up her strength and stamina. She would need both in order to complete the various techniques that were involved in her style of wrestling. As such, strength training was key in her mind as she came up with an arrangement in order to continue to build upon those foundations taught to her. While she is indeed smaller than most of the people she encounters, her size does no more than give her the appearance of being less powerful than she is. Her ability to sustain stronger grapples upon her opponents is increase through this advantage, as well as the impact of her physical attacks. Legacy of a Champion Okada Riku was known throughout the world for her speed and agility when she was in the ring. Such is reflected upon her continue run until her retirement. This trait has been passed down by to her daughter as Himari has displayed incredible speed. This has only increased over the years, alongside her training with both her mother and other shinobi. She can move swiftly across the field with little issue, using her agile footwork to get in close on a target before they can even realize it. Excelling at this, she focuses on being evasive with this ability as well, allowing for her to be just as proactive in getting in, as well not getting hit in the process. Keen Eye After leaving the life of a performer, Himari was given the opportunity to help development the next generation of wrestlers for the OWA. This required that she further study the methods and means in which to help others increase their potential safely without causing injury to themselves. In doing this, she learned about the human body, as well as points upon which one could take advantage of a target and weaken them. While this was a skill she had learned through her career, she further used this knowledge to be more accurate of calculating strategies when dealing with opposition, as well as certain situations that required a keen insight into the anatomy of an individual. The injuries on the Ishigakure shinobi who were downed seemed upon further inspection not to be too serious. It'd seem between them and the two Ishigakure shinobi standing at the sideline. They lacked any real sort of energy, they were covered with cuts. None were seeming to be too deep, but they were many and mixed with a variety of bruises. Not the type one would expect from metal or more so mace like attacks. It'd seem fairly clear the enemy was attempting to take the shinobi alive.

Souma's clones kick would be semi-successful, as it'd nail in the one scavengers head, but the one it caught would swing up it's claw mid kick. Allowing her momentum to dig the bladed fingers into her leg, as a clone it'd easily be enough to disperse it. However it'd seem to matter relatively little, as the odds were seemingly out of the immortal machine's hands. Though Isamu would be the first to note with his sensory. There were going to be more to come, it'd seem five more large chakra signals and ten more small chakra signals were coming. They'd not be here immediately, but they would arrive soon. [Two more post rotations.]

The remaining fighting Ishigakure shinobi would be joined by their elephant partner and the two Skavengers they fought would quickly be dispatched in the background. As Himari would complete her electric attack, but it'd seem relatively ineffective. At least the shocking part to it, as her maneuvers around the puppet would twist it's limbs out of it's movement range. Strength and the angle of her moves busting the arm out of it's socket. It'd leave the three skavengers relatively grouped up and lost for good movement, the elephant immediately bull rushing in on them struggling to stand and stomp them into the ground.

✚ Immortal Machine ✚

Moriko was practically vibrating from the action happening around her. If this was the way that the world was for shinobi all the time after the academy she really needed to finish working things out with Sumi and get moving on kicking massive robot butt herself! What did strike her as odd though was how still Isamu was over all, like yeah he was moving, but wouldn't trying to circle such a massive foe of been better? Momo couldn't help but critcize her holder for not moving enough, it was her driving force to be in motion at nearly all times as it were. Also it wasn't like she was going to complain to a jounin actively when he had been one of those rude and cool uncles that took you to do dangerous and fun activities that had a morally grey legality.

Either way her meister had managed to hold versus the titan in front of them and she had to say that that was awesome! It really showed one's skill mattered as much as what they utilized, even if he was completely forgetting about her which was a minor mark against him. Glancing around she looked to see if the others were watching before she rasied her claws where they were visible and signed out a single word 'More?'

There was probably a lot of ways to interpret that, but she couldn't see more enemies really and she wasn't sure that Isamu could either. It wasn't like she had been ignoring the battlefield entirely though, instead she was foot note interpreting a lot of the events. Himari and Souma were cool battle dancers in her head and the way they seemed to float around attacks before striking and taking out swaths of the foes that they had had to meet head on was pretty awesome to Momo. If she had had legs still and could have folllowed her Mama down the Meister road of the family she definitely would have worked with one of her cousins who preferred like short blades or whips for sure. Her Pa being a hammer would have been too heavy for the way she always daydreamed about taking down enemies. She wanted to move too much to enjoy the heft of a weapon, but the graceful motions of both kunoichi was less like brute force and more like the application of precise strength. Souma had also multiplied into double trouble and that was super cool!

She had also finally caught wind of the cloaked girl, literally, as she had kept floating even after the fall of the big mechanical man had fallen and Isamu had been claiming a prize from the halberd. Ryoko could fly?! That was a revelation that made Moriko's mind race, her ego willing motion into existence via exploration was a massive part of that. The thoughts abstract in the form of direct conscious pictures and feelings, she wanted to switch out who was wearing her. Maybe she would... would that get her in trouble really? Would it really? It was going to be hard to resist her nature if Isamu didn't start pacing at least, being still in this cool of a situation was lame.

If Ryoko came over she would risk giving the girl a hug and wrap her in the obviously superior cloak, assuming, that was, she would agree to flying with her on. An internal squint began the risk reward weighing in favor of the biased reward.

"Mm. Not too awful. Lots of superficial and minor wounds, consistent with extended battle with competent opponents, but nothing telling. Well done, all of you," Souma said, doing her awkward best to build up morale in the others. "Though it is oddly suggestive that they were aiming for captives, not casualties. Strange."

Souma stood, squinting as she tried to push her own senses outwards, to pick up any indication if there might be more incoming. She felt- she thought- some presence similar to the puppet chakra they'd encountered already, but there was absolutely no definition to the attempt she was making, leaving her frowning faintly.

"I think there are more, but... I am not sure. I am not yet well-practiced with the art of telesensory chakra detection. Perhaps someone else might be? I can set up defenses, or a triage camp, but it would be helpful to know which would be more vital if we can determine that." She looked between the others, hunting for a sign that somebody might have an idea of what was coming next. Isamu first- she seemed to recall he'd had a feel for things before they arrived, but she'd be lying if she claimed she outright remembered one way or the other.

"If anybody is in immediate need of chakra reinforcement, do say something before it is too late."

Isamu took a deep breath before approaching his team, chakra signatures that hadn’t been in his range before suddenly pinging at his senses. Nodding at Souma’s words, he confirmed what she’d been thinking. ”There’s more coming. 5 have larger signatures, 10 have smaller,” he stated, eyes scanning the somewhat battered Ishigakure shinobi. The wounds clearly weren’t severe, but the exhaustion from fighting for so long couldn’t be easy on them. Her next comments about setting up defenses were thought about for only a moment, Isamu knowing his seals would be useful there.

”I’ve got defenses, I can draw up some landmines seals. Just don’t stray too close to the entrances, yeah? You can set up your triage camp, if you need a tent or extra basic supplies come get me,” he instructed, hoping the slow-moving chakra signatures on the periphery of his sensory would take their sweet time to arrive. If it was puppets again, his landmines wouldn’t kill. They could cause some damage though, so he still went ahead with it.

Pulling 5 sealing tags and a set of brushes and ink from his body seals, he set to work with a mixture of chakra and picture perfect calligraphy to start on those landmines he’d chosen to start. Placed and even distance from each other at the entrance to the area they were in, the sealing tags would hopefully cause at least some damage to the coming enemies. Muttering to himself, the man took a step back from his work before shouting to his squad that hadn’t heard Souma. ”I’ve set up some land mines at the entrance to this place! Don’t step on the sealing tags unless you wish to take a one-way trip to the pure lands!”

DESCRIPTION:
This seal is marked by an insignia for 'Fuuton' drawn inside a tight circle, which can be placed against the ground or drawn along a surface. Once disturbed by outside means other than proper seal disarmament, the seal ruptures, releasing a vast array of cutting wind blades out in a five meter radius. This is enough to shred against skin and cut into armor for anyone caught in the blast, as well as blow away any mist or particles in the air.

The brash kunoichi remains uncharacteristically passive as things settle down, letting the dust settle before she’d think of adding her own sort of chaos to the aftermath. She flits her eyes to the downed nin then to Souma and Ishi.

She brightens some at the idea of more chakra, though wasn’t quite out. She could continue, long as she didn’t need to keep flying. Waving her ams around and commanding weapons to attack was surprisingly chakra light, compared to flying, or making swamps.

Speaking of.. She gives a little wave of her hand, the scavenger’s head she’d been holding at bey being drawn closer. It seemed safe.. She lets the thing hover before her as she inspects it with a smirk.

She gives a dismissive wave at the idea of explosive notes, the three large wooden shuriken and the one metal one all dancing to life around her, turning some in place for a couple seconds, then settling back down on the ground. Sticking a note to something was even easier than hitting it with a shuriken.

As Himari handed off two of her remaining explosive tags to Ryoko, she'd listen in as the defenses of Isamu were being put in place, as well as hear the instructions being given in regards to their next move. While she certainly didn't have an attuned line of sight on the approaching reinforcements coming their way, it seemed like the other's were confident in their coming to make her a believer. The elephant that had managed to finish up the last of her own attacking party seemed pretty out of it, but would hopefully be getting treatment before the next round, prompting her to nod upward toward the big guy as she began to track the others. Everyone appeared to be in one piece, despite their encounter. Though as she was taking this moment to catch her breath, she was also making sure to keep her head focused on what came next. These things were mounting quite the offensive just to get through, meaning that if they didn't hold the line as much as possible, it would be no shortage of trouble for the others upon their arrival. "Any sign of the advanced team yet?" With a calm expression, Himari concerns went toward her cousins as she questioned if they would be arriving to aid them sooner rather than later. "Course...reckon the name advance squad might need to be us at this point...just sayin..." SPOILER: Click to show -Jutsu Used- -S.A Used- Show-Stopper Himari begun her career as an underdog, underestimated by many of her opponents within the ring due to her size. Yet, in spite of this, she would always come up with a way to win in the end, despite being at the disadvantage. This has much to do with her reflexes, capable of moving around her targets attempts and finding the openings she needs to take them down. More often than not, this serves as her means of protection in it being difficult to hit a someone that you can't accurately engage against. Though it operates on her instincts, it can be unreliable in some situations. Especially if Himari has not been able to figure out the exact anatomy of her opponent. Heart of a Champion During her run within the OWA, Himari would train constantly to build up her strength and stamina. She would need both in order to complete the various techniques that were involved in her style of wrestling. As such, strength training was key in her mind as she came up with an arrangement in order to continue to build upon those foundations taught to her. While she is indeed smaller than most of the people she encounters, her size does no more than give her the appearance of being less powerful than she is. Her ability to sustain stronger grapples upon her opponents is increase through this advantage, as well as the impact of her physical attacks. Legacy of a Champion Okada Riku was known throughout the world for her speed and agility when she was in the ring. Such is reflected upon her continue run until her retirement. This trait has been passed down by to her daughter as Himari has displayed incredible speed. This has only increased over the years, alongside her training with both her mother and other shinobi. She can move swiftly across the field with little issue, using her agile footwork to get in close on a target before they can even realize it. Excelling at this, she focuses on being evasive with this ability as well, allowing for her to be just as proactive in getting in, as well not getting hit in the process. Keen Eye After leaving the life of a performer, Himari was given the opportunity to help development the next generation of wrestlers for the OWA. This required that she further study the methods and means in which to help others increase their potential safely without causing injury to themselves. In doing this, she learned about the human body, as well as points upon which one could take advantage of a target and weaken them. While this was a skill she had learned through her career, she further used this knowledge to be more accurate of calculating strategies when dealing with opposition, as well as certain situations that required a keen insight into the anatomy of an individual. Isamu would be more than capable of setting up their five landmine seals and still have time. Perhaps it'd be spent assisting Souma with triage setup or some other sort of fortification. There was a good little pause, but not much left. The Ishigakure shinobi would need the aid most, as they'd all be relatively dead on chakra. The leader partnered with his elephant were probably the strongest asset, but he'd make no attempt to request aid. Instead insist those most drained get help first.

Along with being able to be asked anything, the Ishigakure shinobi were ears for requests and advise to a degree. Hearing Ryoko ask about explosion notes, two Ishigakure shinobi would go through their down comrades gear, then their own pouches and together pool 22 explosive notes for them.

I'm sorry to force a narrative upon Toff e and Kitarel, but please just stick to it for the purpose of my approval OOC to this IC happenstance. You guys can start with training together when called or whatever you feel works best, but for everyone else's sanity it'll be unknown most likely to the rest an Academy student is among you.

Chakra Cost Notice: Due to the length of distance travelled, the cost of actually using any jutsu would add up more than the cost I listed. So even if you ended last rotation using a different means to travel, the cost I laid out is all you actually paid. HOWEVER; if you used any jutsu prior and don't deactivate it upon arrival to keep going, it'll be assumed the cast is paid that rotation instead of simply charged the maintenance. Similarly any jutsu that's cast and activated later will still be charged. Otherwise, if you just flared up your travel simply take the medium cost + shunshin use or additional low if applicable.

Beneath her cowl the small kunoichi’s eyes light with joy at the appearances of a small pile of explosive notes.

"Ooh heck yeah.” she mutters, not approaching closer. Instead she wiggles the fingers of her right hand int he direction of the stack and peels ten of them off, one at a time. They zip over and land in her left hand.

"I don’t wanna hog them all, feel like two of these on one of those puppets'd work pretty well to blast em to pieces. Maybe three, we’ll see. If other people want some, I don’t mind sharing.”

While that wasn’t quite true, sharing had never been her strong point, it was true of other people’s stuff. Sharing other people’s stuff was easy! She tucks the explosive notes away into a pouch, turning afterwards to better inspect her comrades in this moment of calm.

The Ishi nin seemed alright. Determined, and flat out ignoring her suggestion to leave. Guess there was a reason to stay. A reason for them, at least, that went beyond fun. Ryoko placed a high amount of value on the fun she could have while on a mission. Likely why she preferred to scout. Killing humans was never fun, but sneaking around them was incredibly enjoyable.

On the other hand, smashing up puppets was about as fun as it got. It brought her back to her childhood, playing in the courtyard of the Aihara clan estate and smashing inanimate statues to pieces. Ahh destruction, she knew it well.

She grins a little more at the feelings of nostalgia, another subtle turn of her hand letting her chakra threads reach out and caress her weapons. The tactile sensation at a distance had always thrilled her.

"I love my job.” she says quietly, along with a happy little sigh. Her eyes finally flit back to the swamp she'd made and the path that lay beyond it. She was ready. Bring em on.

Of course, if no one else took the extra notes, Ryoko would seize them herself.

Souma proved laser focused on her tasks. Aware of incoming threats, she wasted no time working to tend the Ishigakure shinobi, shifting her steel cables about to link with them. Proving capable of using them precisely as she might her hands, she began to utilize those connections to refresh the chakra of their allies. While she wouldn't be so flush with chakra as to refill them all to full, it was within her ability to stave off exhaustion for each and ensure they could all remain in the fight- so that's exactly what she did.

She left the accumulated weaponry for the others, opting to establish defenses for the combined forces instead. Rallying off the provided information on the direction on the approaching forces, Souma utilized a pair of Koton techniques to create a trio of defensive structures- the first to create a set of three steel domes, and the second to deform the interior sides of each to create a space to duck behind the metal shapes for protection from three sides, leaving the domes more like half-moons instead.

With the defensive creations arranged around their position facing the enemy's approach, Souma crossed her arms and stood at the ready, facing down the incoming enemies with her armor, her cables- and the sort of disapproving frown that would have made their foes blood run cold on sight...

... if they'd had any blood.
