Under the golden sun of Sunagakure, Genko's day unfolded with the promise of discovery. The village, usually a tapestry of earthy hues, embraced her with its warmth. Her laughter echoed through the narrow streets as she meandered, a tiny adventurer in a world of sand and stone. A soft hoot, delicate as the flutter of a butterfly's wings, drew Genko's attention. There, on a low wall, perched Whisk, a small owl with feathers resembling the colors of the desert itself. The owl's eyes sparkled with an intelligence that captivated Genko's heart. Without hesitation, Genko extended her hand, and Whisk, sensing the kindness within the young sage, hopped onto her outstretched fingers. The newfound companions set off through the village, the rhythmic pat-pat of Genko's sandals harmonizing with the owl's soft hoots.

The duo discovered hidden nooks, shaded courtyards, and blooming gardens, each corner revealing a new facet of Sunagakure's charm. Whisk, the tiny guide, led Genko through narrow alleys and beneath arching structures, the village becoming their enchanted playground. In a secluded square adorned with vibrant flowers, Genko and Whisk found a patch of soft sand. The tiny owl fluttered its wings, and with a graceful leap, Genko joined the owl in a game of tag. Whisk zipped through the air, and Genko, with the agility of youth, chased after her feathered friend. Laughter bubbled forth like a desert spring, drawing the attention of villagers and fellow shinobi. They watched, enchanted, as Genko and Whisk painted the square with joy. The desert winds carried the melody of their laughter, weaving it into the very fabric of Sunagakure.

As the sun cast long shadows across the sandstone buildings, Genko and Whisk, breathless but exhilarated, settled near the village entrance. Whisk, perched on Genko's shoulder, seemed to convey gratitude in its gaze. The day's adventure was just the beginning, a prelude to the untold stories waiting to unfold. The village, now bathed in the warm hues of twilight, cradled the duo's shared secrets. Whispers in the wind carried the echoes of laughter, inviting others to join in the dance of friendship and exploration. Sunagakure, with its ancient walls and shifting sands, held the promise of more enchanting tales yet to be written.

The sound of distant laughter was answered with cackling. The hyena's mouth opened, the taste of the night upon his tongue as he drank in the air, chittering and giggling escaping from his maw with every exhale. Food was not a rarity for the beast, being the companion of a shinobi, but he hungered constantly. As a pup, he had stalked more than his fair share of birds. Whilst their ability to take to the sky had provided them with an unfair advantage in escaping from his pursuit, the instinctive desire to set teeth to their flesh never quite escaped him.

The hyena was hit upside the back of his head by the teenage girl that walked beside him.

Birdsong had not been the only sound, the tell-tale laughter of a child having accompanied on the air. In any case, Sunagakure was not a hunting ground, and whilst she knew that her companion would not strike without an order, it was poor form for the animal to get into the habit of any sort of stalking, be the animals tame or not.

"Heel," Warai Ameko ordered simply, and Yuki fell into line with his master and his brother.

The trio moved with predatory purpose, although such an action had become instinctual more than deliberate. Her continued training with the hyenas had seen the genin's own movements grow to imitate them more and more, even in those moments where her mind settled into a recess, allowing her subconscious to direct her.

Such was this occasion, as twilight settled over their tired bodies. Another day of focusing on the animalistic movements of the hyenas, of striking against one another until exhaustion crept upon them. They had not yet been assigned a second mission, but that did not mean that they could allow themselves to slack off. The pursuit of ambition was neverending.

But curiosity summoned the cat, or at least the feliform, and without thinking, Ameko had led her familiars to the village entrance, the peculiar sound of child and owl laughing in unison having caught not only the attention of beast, but of man.

Yuki cackled again as they approached, his vocalisation cutting through the darkening sky.

"Quiet," Ameko ordered, her voice harder, indignation and frustration creeping in, "Sorry 'bout that. He's an idiot. Nice owl ya got there."

Genko's eyes widened with delight as she noticed the approaching trio. The hyena's laughter, though different from Whisk's soft hoots, resonated with a wild energy that stirred her curiosity. She inclined her head politely, her eyes sparkling with the same childlike wonder that filled her heart. "That one seems fun! Do you and... your friend often explore the village together?" Genko asked, her enthusiasm undeterred by the contrasting demeanor of the hyena. The village entrance became a stage for the convergence of different worlds—youthful exuberance and untamed instincts. Her fingers absentmindedly brushed Whisk's feathers, a calming gesture as her eyes flickered with a blend of curiosity and admiration.

The girl's apology only elicited a giggle from Genko. "No need to say sorry! Laughter is like a gift from the birds, spreading joy wherever it goes," she shared, her words carrying the sincerity of a sage in the making. The twilight sky above seemed to nod in agreement, the vibrant hues framing the encounter like a painting. "Are you from Sunagakure too? I'm Koizumi Genko, and this little one is Whisk," she gestured to the owl, her small frame radiating warmth and friendliness. The village, now encompassed by the dance of laughter and the presence of the hyena, felt even more alive. Genko's eyes gleamed, eager to weave another chapter into the tapestry of her life—one where laughter, exploration, and unexpected friendships merged under the watchful gaze of the desert stars. As the trio engaged in conversation, Genko couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement. The prospect of a new friendship blossoming under the vast desert sky filled her with boundless joy. She glanced at Whisk, whose feathers seemed to shimmer in agreement as if affirming the positive energy of the encounter.

The sounds of the village continued around them, a harmonious background to the unfolding connection. Genko's mind raced with thoughts of future adventures and shared laughter, her heart echoing the rhythm of the desert winds. The hyena, though initially unfamiliar, became a symbol of the untamed spirit that complemented the warmth of newfound companionship. "Maybe we can explore together sometime! Sunagakure has so many hidden places waiting to be discovered," Genko suggested, her eyes gleaming with the prospect of shared adventures. The evening air carried the promise of camaraderie, and Genko couldn't help but feel that the chance encounter marked the beginning of a beautiful friendship—one that would add vibrant strokes to the canvas of her shinobi journey. As the twilight deepened, the trio continued to share stories and laughter, forming a connection that transcended the boundaries of unfamiliarity. The desert night, adorned with stars, witnessed the birth of a friendship that would endure the sands of time—a friendship woven into the very fabric of Genko's journey as she embraced the warmth of the village and the untamed joy of new companionship.

Ameko ruffled the top of Yuki's head, the more friendly of her two companions seemingly very happy with the compliment he'd been paid. His tongue lolled from his mouth, and he elicited another cackle, drawing a disapproving look from the teenager but no vocal rebuke. If this girl wanted to hear the peculiar vocalisations of her hyenas, then she would allow it. So often people shied away from the creatures, even with the preceding reputation of her clan. Alas, Kōri so often proved them right for doing so. For his part, the second the conversation had started, he had slinked away into a dark corner. Content to sit in the shadows in silence, two glowing orbs peering out of the black and reflecting the dying light of the sun.

"You," Ameko rubbed the back of her head, "You speak very pretty for a girl your age." The compliment was sincere, and in spit of herself, the older girl felt on the backfoot. She wasn't exactly the most well-read shinobi, nor was she particularly comfortable with conversation that approached poetry or matters of serious consideration. This girl, Koizumi Genko, seemed wise beyond her years.

"Warai Ameko," Ameko did introduce herself, "Yuki, and Kōri," she gestured in turn. "I'm from Sunagakure, well, at least near enough to for it to count. Certainly from this country, and that's all well and the same, 'aint it?"

In front of the young girl with the gradient hair, and sparkling eyes, Ameko felt decidedly plain. She was older than Genko, but the way in which the girl spoke and interacted, even with her owl, was almost otherworldly. In contrast, the dusty and very of-this-world Ameko felt as if she did not know how to properly respond. Children were often... less.

Still, she was Warai Ameko, and to be intimidated by a child who happened to have mastered fanciful words was beneath her. Her face split into a wolfish grin, she would handle this as she always did, with confidence and directness.

"Maybe we can," She answered, "There are a few back alleys where you can find all sorts. Not sure how Whisk feels about food, what do owls eat? But a few places throw out perfectly solid snacks at the end of the day."

Ameko walked toward Genko with all the poise and ease of a tabby, Yuki trotting by her side in a much more canine gait.

She outstretched her hand, offering it to the owl to inspect, as she continued to speak, "You can pet Yuki if you want, he won't bite, boy's too dumb for that. He just wants a scritch behind the ears and a bit of old cow bone out of life. Simple little bugger."

As if punctuating the words, the hyena cackled again.

Genko watched as Ameko interacted with her hyenas, a sense of admiration creeping into her heart. The bond between shinobi and animals was a testament to the deep connection they shared. As Ameko extended her hand towards Whisk, Genko couldn't help but smile at the sight of the owl inspecting her with curious eyes. "Whisk enjoys hunting for himself, but he's also fond of the occasional treat," Genko replied, her voice gentle yet firm. She extended her hand towards Whisk, allowing the owl to hop onto her arm. His feathers brushed against her skin, and she felt a surge of joy at the contact.

Yuki, seeing an opportunity for affection, approached Genko. She reached out and scratched behind his ears, eliciting a contented rumble from the hyena. The simple act of bonding with these animals filled Genko with a sense of peace she hadn't felt in a long time. Ameko's wolfish grin mirrored Genko's own as she observed the interaction. Despite their differences, there was a sense of understanding between them. Ameko's straightforward nature resonated with Genko, who valued honesty and authenticity above all else. "I'd be delighted to explore the back alleys with you, Ameko," Genko said, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Whisk is quite the hunter, but he's also a connoisseur of discarded delicacies."

As the group set off into the moonlit streets of Sunagakure, the night seemed to come alive with possibilities. The rhythmic pattern of their footsteps echoed against the sandstone walls, a testament to the village's enduring spirit. As they wandered through the alleys, Genko's curiosity was piqued. She turned to Ameko, "Do you have any stories from your adventures beyond Sunagakure? I'd love to hear them." The night wore on, the moon casting a soft, ethereal glow over their path. Genko felt a sense of belonging she had never experienced before. The bonds forged under the desert sky were as strong as the sands that surrounded them, a testament to the enduring spirit of Sunagakure and its people.

Something pure sparkled in Ameko’s eyes as the owl inspected her hand. It was a little thing, much smaller than the animals with which she had been raised. Cute, in a sense. Ameko did not look away from the bird as Genko spoke, instead offering only a nod in response. It was to be expected that an animal companion would be fond of a treat. No doubt the type of treat that the bird sought varied to that of her own companions. Perhaps equally bloody, from what she knew of owls they were predators, but likely less boney.

But it was clear that the source of the treats was even more the same. The back alleys of Sunagakure were hardly a wonderland, and mostly consisted of dingy streets and discarded waste. Yet some grocers and restaurants were forced to discard even decent stock. Stock that Ameko had little desire in eating, she was not an animal, even if she sometimes acted in such a way. She could not say the same for Yuki and Kōri.

The former of which almost purred with contentment as he received a scritch behind the ears. Ameko looked over her bestial companion and rolled her eyes. He was such a suckup. If she could transfer some of his friendliness to his utterly unpersonable brother, she’d have two perfectly behaved hyenas.

But they fell in line all the same as the motley crew set off to explore.

"When they were still pups and growing they’d devour an entire carcass then set out to eat whatever bones they could find," Ameko smiled in response to the statement that Whisk enjoyed the odd discarded delicacy, "Little buggers would raid garbage cans… This is a bit more savoury.”

As they explored the alleys, Genko asked further questions. They were outside a bakery, the hyenas sniffing at what appeared to be a few sweet pastries that had been discarded, or dropped and subsequently forgotten, when Ameko grimaced.

Tales outside of Sunagakure? She didn’t have a whole lot. Not of adventures at least.

Crouching down to check to see if it was safe to let her familiars nibble at the baked goods, Ameko spoke, "Used to go hunting with the clan out in the desert. Not much different to Sunagakure really, less people, but same rules.”

She rose to her feet, "But the sky… the desert sky at sunset, it’s something to behold. It really is.”

Ameko chuckled briefly, "I may have misled you a bit. I’m a ninja, sure, but a newly minted one. Only been on one mission outside the city… Just had to find some old man’s dog. Not much to it. Bit similar to hunting, really?”

"You? I take it you’re at the Academy?”

As the night deepened, Genko and Whisk continued to explore the alleys of Sunagakure, their footsteps echoing softly against the sandstone walls. The village seemed to hold its breath, enveloped in a peaceful silence that spoke of hidden wonders waiting to be discovered. Ameko's stories of hunting in the desert captured Genko's imagination, painting vivid pictures of vast landscapes and endless skies. She listened intently, her eyes shining with admiration for Ameko's experiences. "It must be incredible to witness the sunset in the desert," Genko remarked, her voice filled with wonder. "I can only imagine the beauty of the colors as they dance across the sky." Whisk, perched on Genko's shoulder, hooted softly, as if in agreement with her sentiments. The owl's feathers glowed softly in the moonlight, adding to the enchantment of the moment.

As they walked, they stumbled upon a small courtyard bathed in moonlight, the gentle sound of a fountain adding to the serene atmosphere. Genko's eyes widened with delight at the sight of the blooming flowers and the peaceful aura of the place. "This is truly a hidden gem," she exclaimed, her voice barely above a whisper. "It feels like stepping into a different world, one untouched by time." Whisk ruffled his feathers, a sign of contentment, as he surveyed the courtyard from his perch. The tranquility of the scene seemed to seep into his small frame, and Genko couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over her as well. "It's moments like these that remind us of the beauty and serenity that can be found in the world," Genko said softly, more to herself than to anyone else. She felt a deep connection to the natural world around her, a connection that was strengthened by her bond with Whisk. As they continued their exploration, Genko felt a sense of gratitude for the chance to experience such moments. The night held the promise of new adventures and discoveries, and Genko was eager to see where their journey would take them next.

"It is,” The memories were pleasant ones, of sand and sun, of wind and moon. The desert surrounding Sunagakure were harsh, desolate places, but if one knew where to look, if they knew how to look, they were also places of beauty. Savage beauty at times, but also the peaceful setting of a sun, or of a far off herd trekking across the wastes in search of water and safety.

Ameko did not know how shinobi from other nations lived, but she knew that she was blessed to be from the land of wind, blessed to undertake missions in a country as dangerous as it was gorgeous, "I’m sure you’ll see it sooner rather than later. Can’t be trapped in the village all your life.”

She did not know what she was expecting to experience when she set off for a walk that evening, but a pleasant chat with a younger girl, discussing the beauties of the world and seeing the hidden parts of the village she called home were certainly not it. It was a rare moment of tranquillity for the so-often mercurial girl, her nature tamed. Not unlike the hyenas with which she lived and trained, she was a wild animal bowed by the comforts and beauties of civilisation. The courtyard was one of those beauties. Flowers and a fountain, things made by hand. Nature may have had its own intricacies, its own displays of extravagance, but mankind was not to be undone. Humanity could carve delicate features into even the most savage of landscapes.

So it was that she found herself with her more well-spoken companion. Nodding in response to the girl’s musings. The world was beautiful.

But it was also bountiful.

The calm that had settled over Ameko was not her natural state, and it was only natural that excitement would pick up again. A somewhat familiar shape had caught her eye, and she beamed and gestured to Genko to follow.

The storefront had been closed for a number of years, but evidently no one had seen fit to renovate or repair it. It was by no means an eyesore, not in an overt sense, dilapidation had not yet claimed it. Instead it stood as a husk, a corpse of a building bereft of life. Which, of course made it an excellent place to explore without being caught. Its large window frames were outward facing, and were easy enough to climb.

Easy enough to climb to the roof, which while by no means tall, did give the visitors the ability to see above the lines of buildings, and to see the full extent of the sky. Brilliant stars shone down from the blanket of black, a tapestry of light.

"Pretty sure some people can navigate using the stars,” Ameko mused, "No clue how personally. Something about directions and all that stuff, y’know, smart people junk… I just reckon they’re pretty."

Genko followed Ameko's lead, her curiosity piqued by the abandoned storefront. The building stood like a silent sentinel, its weathered facade whispering tales of bygone days. As they climbed to the roof, Genko marveled at the view. The desert night stretched out before them, a vast canvas painted with the twinkling lights of distant stars. Genko's eyes sparkled with wonder as she gazed up at the sky, the beauty of the night sky never failing to captivate her. "They are indeed beautiful," Genko replied, her voice soft with awe. "I've always found solace in the stars. They seem to hold a wisdom that transcends time." She turned to Ameko, a gentle smile playing on her lips. "Perhaps one day, you'll learn their secrets, and guide others through the darkness with their light."

As they sat on the rooftop, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the night, Genko felt a sense of peace settle over her. The world seemed to slow down, allowing her to savor the moment. She glanced at Whisk, who was perched beside her, his eyes reflecting the shimmering stars above. "Do you think the stars have a plan for us, Whisk?" she whispered, her words more of a musing than a question. Whisk tilted his head, as if contemplating her words, before letting out a soft hoot. Ameko's presence added to the magic of the moment. Despite their differences, Genko felt a kinship with the older girl. They were both shinobi, bound by duty and a love for their village. "Thank you for showing me this place, Ameko," Genko said, turning to her with a grateful smile. "It's moments like these that make me appreciate the beauty of our world and the bonds we share with others."

As they sat under the starlit sky, the night unfolded around them, weaving a tapestry of friendship and shared experiences. The desert winds whispered ancient secrets, carrying them to the far corners of Sunagakure. In that moment, Genko felt a deep connection to the world around her, a connection that transcended words. She knew that no matter where their journeys took them, the bonds forged under the desert sky would endure, a testament to the enduring spirit of Sunagakure and its people.

Ameko raised an eyebrow at Genko’s statement, the younger girl once again using words that displayed a wisdom beyond her years, likely even beyond that of Ameko. The genin offered something of a sheepish smile to the girl, before her turning her attention back toward the stars. Maybe she would understand them… one day. She doubted it. Knowledge seemed to ever elude her. It was those thoughts that she sat and stewed on, the doubts and concerns dancing in her mind as the peace of the night settled over their motley crew. Maybe some people were just born to certain fates. Plans and destiny seemed to concern Genko as well, judging by the words she spoke softly to her avian companion. Ameko pretended not to hear, the words were not meant for her, and besides, she had other matters to consider, her own worries and stresses.

The smile she offered in response to Genko’s was less confident than that of the sage apprentice, "Yeah.” She stumbled over her words for a moment, thinking as to how to best respond. Finally, she settled on simple agreement, "The world sure is pretty, isn’t it?”

The night settled, bringing silence and introspection, creating an unlikely bond between the girl who communed with avians and the one with beasts. Finally, Ameko rose to her feet, her eyes not leaving the sky as she spoke, "It’s getting late, no? Need me to walk ya home?”

As the night deepened and their time on the rooftop came to an end, Genko felt a sense of gratitude for the moments shared with Ameko. The older girl's presence had added a new dimension to her understanding of the world and the bonds they shared as shinobi. As Ameko offered to walk her home, Genko nodded, a smile playing on her lips. "That would be lovely, thank you, Ameko," she replied, her voice filled with warmth. As they descended from the rooftop and made their way through the quiet streets of Sunagakure, Genko felt a sense of contentment settle over her. The night had been filled with unexpected discoveries and new friendships, reminding her of the beauty and magic that could be found in the world around her.

Once they reached the familiar surroundings of Genko's home, she turned to Ameko, her eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you for tonight, Ameko," she said, her voice sincere. "I'll always treasure the memories we've made together." With a final smile, Genko bid Ameko goodnight and entered her home, Whisk following closely behind. As she settled into bed, the events of the night played in her mind like a cherished melody, filling her heart with a sense of joy and wonder. The night may have ended, but the memories of their adventure under the desert sky would stay with her forever, a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and the beauty of the world around them.

They descended the rooftop with relative ease, Ameko offering a friendly pet to the top of Yuki’s head as they reached the ground. The hyena made a noise that sounded something like a purr, and his partner responded by offering him a series of scratches beneath his chin. Night had well and truly come, the light of the moon offering the sole guidance in the dark, yet Ameko found herself somewhat relaxed. It was a peculiar feeling. So often, she found herself wired to the nines, ready to pounce, ready to right, ready to learn. To engage in something sociable without the pressure of training was a well needed respite. A break from the pressure, from the grind, a chance to simply be.

The walk was calming, and in spite of herself, Ameko found her thoughts wandering toward the future. What was to come. She couldn’t say, she couldn’t know. The darkness, the perpetual unknown of destiny lay before her. The simple quiet of the night had laid that bare. So it was that she was lost in her own thoughts as Genko thanked her for their time together.

Ameko bowed her head slightly, a formal gesture she was not used to, before replacing it with a cocky smile, "Any time, any time. Was a pleasure for me as well.”

Reaching her hand out, Ameko offered her fingers to the owl for a sniff, "Thank you too… For the memories, I mean.”

Her own words were not as poetic as her companion, but she stumbled over them all the same, "Was a pleasure spendin’ time with ya.”
