Gure An of Kirigakure!” There were two vivid yellow stripes painted onto the hard-packed dirt ground of the arena about twenty meters apart: designated starting zones for each of the genin to stand on. They would be instructed to bow, and then the countdown for the round to start would begin. "Three… …two… …one… Begin!” As the starting signal sounded, a haze of thick, dark grey smoke suddenly began to fill the arena. It smelled of rich burning wood and incense, so heavy and so dense that it would cut each genin's visibility to only five feet or so in front of them, and as the minutes ticked by it would grow harder and harder for them to breathe. The smoke was clearly crafted through use of ninjutsu, and it would take an enormously powerful fuuton technique to clear it away; it was quite plainly meant to remain in place for the entirety of the fight. This was the boon that An had exchanged her scroll for. Murmurs of curiosity erupted in the crowd as the spectators were similarly unable to witness what was going on; Kumogakure sensor shinobi and Omori clan members were on standby, carefully watching the proceedings in case of any potentially lethal activity going down in the smoke. Pulling off such a large-scale utility seemed improbable for a genin, especially considering the second round would start after this battle.

With just effective visibility of a metre and a half, his initial strategy of overwhelming An with his speed became unviable. Quickly adapted to the unforeseen circumstance, Akirei swiftly abandoned his initial plan and opted for a patience approach.

With the smoke obstructing both participants' vision, An's thrown shurikens missed Akirei by a fair margin.

While unable to see where the shurikens landed, Akirei could still hear the impact. The distinct sound of the projectiles hitting the wall or ground reached him, however, he couldn't precisely pinpoint their locations or determine the number thrown. He only had normal human ears after all.

However, An was determined not to make it easy for him. The continuous use of the spore smoke added an additional layer of difficulty for Akirei.

However, after falling into the trap once, Akirei had made a decent preparation this time. He controlled his breathing as he rushed forward, expecting the same smoke jutsu in advance. He couldn't escape from coughing though, but it was much better than the first time.

Still, due to the disturbance, even with higher base speed, Akirei might not be able to make it to An before she moved away. Not wishing for that to happen, he decided to spend his very first chakra. Swiftly flinging his clothes forward, a torn piece of paper was shot out, and if it wasn't the fog, everyone would be able to notice the word "flash” on the surface.

Immediately after the flail, the tag detonated, unleashing a strong shock wave and a brilliant flash of light. The intense combination served to disperse the dense smoke and the irritating spore smoke for a brief moment. While it might appear that Akirei had put himself in a disadvantageous position, the reality was quite the opposite.

The temporary clearing of smoke could potentially reveal his position to an opponent nearby, but it also meant that anyone in close proximity who could see him would be temporarily blinded by the flash. Fresh air became a desperate need for his brain and lungs, but he couldn't provide it. He felt he had about half a minute, or even less, before his key organs would fail.

With extreme urgency in mind, Akirei decided to go all out for the next thirty seconds before passing out. Immediately after An avoided his attack, he swiftly triggered two explosive tags on his left hand. Using
Susano's Explosive Tags eliminated the need for hand seals and unnecessary movements. This resulted in an unexpected explosion, engulfing both Akirei and An, along with the projectiles she had thrown, of which Akirei wasn't even aware in the first place.

In a typical scenario, such an explosion would leave the user severely injured. However, he was built differently. His hijutsu allowed him to regenerate from any damage as long as he had the chakra to sustain it. The scattered papers quickly reassembled, forming the complete Akirei once again. While he was unscathed, it was clear that he was extremely exhausted, as the healing took a significant toll on his chakra.

But he knew he had no time to rest. With the precious temporary vision gained from the explosion, he charged toward An with his tanto, resisting the extreme burning pain from his lungs. In the split second before his tanto could reach its target, Akirei stealthily formed a chain weapon in his left hand and swung it toward her. Unbeknownst to An, the paper weapon was partially constructed with explosive tags.

"Let's see how you handle this combination!" His inner voice resounded as the attacks were aimed at An. If she tried to narrowly evade, as she did before, or worse, attempt to parry, she would be caught in the subsequent explosion triggered by the concealed explosive tag. However, there was no time to relax. Though momentarily incapacitated by the blast, Akirei swiftly regenerated, the scattered pieces of paper coalescing to form a fresh incarnation of himself. An couldn't help but be impressed; it was her first time witnessing such rapid regeneration.

Regardless of her choice, Akirei was ready to take down his opponent with his hidden explosive tag. However, to his utter surprise, the little girl abruptly disappeared from his sight with only a single, swift hand seal.

"!?!" Totally caught off guard by the surprise disappearance of the little girl, Akirei was forced to do something else. There was no time to waste, not only was he going to faint soon, the weapon he formed had a very brief life span. Unlike the more commonly taught weapon-forming jutsu, the one he learned was Nyūjinkyoku. Founded by his mother, it leaned toward low chakra cost and high speed, but the trade-off was its lifespan.

In an attempt to salvage something from the situation, he hurriedly swung the chain towards the ground in front of him. It wasn't a random move though, he purposefully aimed for his starting spot, where he had strategically laid out a trail of explosive tags.

As soon as the chain came into contact with the ground, he promptly triggered the explosive tag concealed on its tips. A powerful explosion erupted through the chain's head, and it connected with the trail of explosive tags he had scattered on the ground. This set off a series of explosions that sent powerful shockwaves throughout the arena, tremor reached the spectators even though they couldn't see what was happening due to the dense fog.

Unfortunately, the goddess of luck wasn't on his side this time. The explosion failed to reach the girl, rendering his final trick futile. "Sigh…" A disappointed exhale escaped him as he dropped to his knees. The broken chain in his hand gradually disintegrated into paper sheets, then turned to dust. With no more tricks up his sleeves and his body unable to withstand the dark fog, he opted to concede.
