Upon learning that a genjutsu specialist visiting from the Land of Earth, Nohime Ouritsu, Amaya seized the opportunity to seek out a joint training session. With the potential benefits of an external perspective, especially in the nuanced field of genjutsu, he promptly extended an official request to the stone shinobi. Given the often hectic schedules of visitors, Amaya preferred this direct and official approach over leaving their meeting to chance. His intrigue was piqued by the possibility that a shinobi from the Land of Earth might offer a fresh approach to genjutsu, differing from the methodologies he had been trained on in the Mist. [break][break]

To Amaya's satisfaction, Nohime Ouritsu accepted the invitation, with the meeting setd for this evening. As the sun dipped, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the chosen meeting spot was one of Kirigakure's more common training grounds. The area was simplistic—a vast open space ringed by dense trees and centred around a large pond fed by a stream.[break][break]

Amaya positioned himself at the edge of the training grounds, his back against a tree. He was engrossed in his notebook, a practice recommended by Masshiro, reviewing notes from his previous training sessions with layered genjutsu. These notes not only charted his progress but also highlighted what had fallen short in earlier attempts. With the foundational aspects of the skill now understood, thanks largely to Masshiro's guidance, Amaya recognized that his focus needed to shift toward refinement and practice.

Fate was an interesting thing sometimes and it often put opportunities in one's path at the perfect time. Ouritsu had traveled to Kiri at the request of one of their other shinobi to help with some rather interesting genjutsu training which provided the chunin with a chance to work on a new wrinkle for his own genjutsu techniques. What he had not expected while still on his visit was another request for help and ironically enough for the same thing he was working on! Whether word had gotten around or this was just luck of the draw the Nohime was eager to help out.

The man he was supposed to meet at the training grounds was apparently an older genin named Amaya who Ouritsu had been given a rough description of and hopefully wouldn't be too hard to find. Making his way towards the clearing he couldn't help but notice how much greenery there was compared to the training grounds back home in Iwa. Sure, there was the occasional grouping of trees and stuff but it was mostly barren rocky outcroppings with a decent stream running through it; a man could get spoiled by this.

Soon enough the young Nohime would spot someone who looked to match Amaya's description leaned up against a tree and with no one else in the immediate area he had a pretty good feeling that this was his guy. "Oi, are you Amaya by chance? I'm Ouritsu, heard we could help each other out with some genjutsu training."

Nohime Ouritsu made his punctual entrance through the stillness of the evening, his lavender-haired man with and sharply defined features carved a distinct silhouette in the sunset. Amaya greeted him with a respectful bow, the flat tone of his voice masking the underlying enthusiasm for the session ahead. "Yes, it is nice to meet you,” his greeting succinct yet courteous.[break][break]

"I've been studying layered genjutsu extensively," he initiated, eager to cut to the core of the purpose of their meeting. "I understand that you have also been studying the same technique. An alternate viewpoint could prove invaluable." Despite doubts about the productivity of their session, given Ouritsu's own ongoing journey with the technique, Amaya recognized the inherent value of practicing with another adept shinobi. At the very least, having another human to practice on would be useful.[break][break]

"I'm eager to understand your progress," Amaya stated, setting aside his notebook to signal his complete focus on Ouritsu. "I believe I have a firm understanding of the technique. Yet, its application remains my stumbling block. I've been isolating the genjutsu, targeting distinct cognitive regions of the brain." The prospect of Ouritsu employing a divergent method intrigued Amaya, though he suspected their approaches might not differ significantly.[break][break]

So this was the guy, cool cool cool. He spoke awfully formal, or maybe Ouritsu had just become accustomed to those country bumpkin Okada and hearing something else was just a bit jarring. Regardless, with introductions and pleasantries out of the way Amaya chose to get right into the thick of things explaining that while he had been training to layer his genjutsu as well having another viewpoint could potentially lead to a better understanding of the application. That certainly made sense and it was one of the first things the Nohime had done with him being lucky enough to have a chance meeting with the Yuki Lady who was a genjutsu practitioner herself.

"You're doing well in knowing that the genjutsu can't overlap what sense they affect otherwise they'll cancel each other out and the whole illusion falls apart, so it's important to pick techniques that both compliment each other and allow your target to experience both triggers whether it's visual/auditory, touch/visual or whatever combination. Other than that the most I've been able to layer is two techniques, anymore than that and it gets tough to concentrate on them all especially if you're using higher ranked jutsu, though that may be possible with more skill." Ouritsu replied thinking on any other relevant information he could share.

"As is probably no surprise the best way to get a feel for it is with practice, and I'm not sure if it's the same out here as it is back home but people try their best to hide once you mention the word genjutsu so it's tough finding training partners. So if you want to give it a shot I'll give you the best pointers I can on what I'm feeling and what's working and not so much."

Amaya's gaze, unwavering and flat, remained fixed on Ouritsu as he detailed the complexities of layered genjutsu. The information flowed, none of it new, yet it was reassuring to know that they were in similar situations with the skill. Their collaboration, Amaya considered, would be beneficial to both shinobi.[break][break]

"Yes," Amaya managed, his voice barely betraying a hint of dry humour. "I haven’t had any eager volunteers." The reality that even Masshiro, with his specialization in genjutsu, had refrained from offering himself up as a subject for Amaya's practice, underscored the truth in his words. Shadow clones had served as a makeshift solution, yet they lacked the unpredictability of a true mind.[break][break]

The idea of subjecting himself to the stone shinobi's genjutsu sparked a flicker of curiosity. It would be interesting to have a chance to understand the scope of another's abilities. He anticipated, naturally, that they would both choose the least damaging illusions for their exercises—anything more would be imprudent.[break][break]

"Do you also require some practice?" Amaya inquired, already aware of Ouritsu's intentions in coming to Kirigakure. The details of his training goals remained a mystery, yet Amaya saw no harm in offering the first move to Ouritsu. "You may start if you’d like."[break][break]

With that, Amaya gestured subtly with a nod for Ouritsu to begin, all the while his impassive gaze was stuck on the shinobi.

No many how many miles separated people certain things were always a constant and Amaya's words confirmed that people were apprehensive of genjutsu the world over. Part of the chunin wanted to erase such a stigma but on the other hand if such abilities were seen with even a modicum of fear it would help him in the long run. For the moment that mattered not as the two had found someone they could hone their skills with and the only thing now was to get the ball rolling. Ouritsu would nod at the offer to begin their training session as he took a moment to settle on which combination of techniques he'd use first.

It went without saying that he'd avoid the brain melting techniques but even the simpler jutsu once stacked could do a number on someone's senses. To begin the chunin would step forward creating numerous after images about the area, his true self blending in with the copies yet he remained in the same spot. Almost immediately after he'd loose a loud, shrill whistle that would flip and twist the genin's view of the world. If all worked well the two techniques would make the Kiri-nin's senses run amok. Either one of the jutsu used alone had the possibility of disorienting a target but in conjunction almost anyone would struggle to figure out which of dozens of copies was the real one while their view was all topsy turvy.

As Nohime Ouritsu took his turn, Amaya braced himself, observing attentively. With a deliberate stomp, Ouritsu initiated the first illusion, causing multiple duplicates of himself to scatter across the field, effectively masking his true location. Amaya made a mental note of the technique's utility for later reflection.[break][break]

The onset of the second illusion was all too familiar to Amaya, one he often wielded himself. At Ouritsu's whistle, the world around Amaya began to spin, flipping his perspective upside down and stirring a sense of disorientation and mild nausea within him. It was an unusual sensation to be on the receiving end of his own strategy.[break][break]

As the illusions attempted to assert dominance within his mind, Amaya could sense their struggle for supremacy. It was clear that this internal conflict was what led them to dissipate moments later, freeing him from the visions.[break][break]

Pointing out the imbalance he perceived, Amaya noted, "The genjutsu had uneven chakra distribution, causing one to overpower the other. I will try now."[break][break]

Without delay, Amaya readied his own genjutsu. He replicated the illusion Ouritsu had used, bringing a whistle to his lips. The familiar sensation of the world tilting and inverting would now be Ouritsu's to navigate. Following up, Amaya utilized the bells he carried, creating a pervasive, shifting cacophony of bells intended to envelop Ouritsu.[break][break]

The extensive practice he had been undergoing to master this was beginning to bear fruit. He navigated the fine line between the illusions, ensuring they operated in their distinct realms without interference. He made sure to balance his chakra more evenly between the illusions, striving for equilibrium to prevent one from nullifying the other's effect. Juggling these elements—even with superior chakra control—was demanding.

Though the combination of jutsu was one that the chunin was familiar with he still felt a bit silly performing their respective triggers as if he were about to break into some kind of interpretive song and dance but the results spoke for themselves. Genjutsu was unique in how it assaulted the senses by overwriting what the target was normally experiencing and that feeling was only amplified when multiple techniques were used together. However, just as they assaulted the senses for dominance they could fight each other as two similar yet fundamentally different waves of chakra sought to pull attention to itself. The goal was to have the chakra be balanced enough that they could work in tandem and though the jutsu had taken effect for a short time the imbalance had caused one to overtake the other and both eventually faltered.

Amaya's criticism was just --if a little forward-- but it was the best way Ouritsu was going to improve on his shortcomings. Perfecting this skill was crucial as there was no room for error in the field; failed jutsu were a recipe for disaster and could be the tipping point between a successful mission and the worst possible scenario playing out. The Nohime simply gave a nod as he prepared himself for his training partner's attempt. The first technique was very familiar as it flipped his vision around every which way, a sensation that was difficult to manage no matter the familiarity. Then came something new: the sound of a ringing bell. But it wasn't just one and the direction wasn't anywhere he could pinpoint, not that he could with his current field of view anyway, but it was enough to drive an unsuspecting person mad if subjected long enough.

"I can barely hear myself think over all the bells. The chakra was stable for the most part, though a bit of lag between the two techniques." Ouritsu spoke as he senses began to right themselves.

Figuring the man wasn't one to really shoot the breeze the Nohime prepared for his second go at things as he faux bit his thumb before going through a string of seals and planting his hand on the ground. From a puff of smoke would tiger of decent size, its snarling form locked squarely on the Kiri-nin. "Keizokuteki Enmu no Jutsu" Ouritsu spoke while rendering another couple of seals that preceded a thick blanket of fog covering the area and obscuring his training partners vision. From the his side the tiger would leap out of the 'fog' and aim to strike at him before disappearing harmlessly. He was curious to know how the techniques felt from Amaya's point of view as Ouritsu thought they were too cumbersome to work well together.

NAME: Nise no Kuchiyose [False Summoning]
RANK: D
CHAKRA USAGE: To Use: Low | To Maintain: Very Low
CLASSIFICATION: Genjutsu
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
TRIGGER: Visual
DESCRIPTION:
A fairly simple, yet useful technique for tricking an opponent. The user will proceed through the process of summoning in the normal manner. Upon the target(s) seeing the user place their hand on a surface the technique will be triggered. The technique allows the user to summon a small to medium size summon of any animal type they wish, which then may be used to "attack" the target(s). It may even appear to do damage to them, but of course this is all fictional. Generally the technique is utilized to make an opponent waste time and energy fighting something that is not even there.

NAME: Keizokuteki Enmu no Jutsu [Continuous Fog Technique]
RANK: D
CHAKRA USAGE: To Use: Low | To Maintain: Very Low
CLASSIFICATION: Genjutsu
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
TRIGGER: Auditory
DESCRIPTION:
Developed as a genjutsu version of the hidden mist technique it allows for the same effects as the ninjutsu version with much less chakra utilized. The target seeing a thick fog or mist rising up to obscure their vision and even their hearing. Less experienced users of genjutsu usually leave it at this, but more experienced practitioners will add in the proper smells and even the damp feel of the fog to the target(s) senses. The technique is triggered by the user saying the techniques name; although they'll often render a handseal or two as well to make the target(s) believe it is actually a ninjutsu.

Amaya acknowledged the Stone shinobi’s efforts with a brief nod. That was reassuring, the techniques were coming together more smoothly with each attempt. Soon enough, Amaya thought to himself as he prepared for their next round of illusions. [break][break]

To an outsider, the scene might appear oddly tranquil, two shinobi locked in a silent standoff amidst the training grounds, their physical stillness belying the hidden engagement beneath the surface. Ouritsu wasted no time in launching into his next set of illusions, prompting Amaya to fortify himself for what was to come. [break][break]

A fearsome illusionary tiger emerged, its presence announced by a snarl. Almost simultaneously, Ouritsu conjured a fog, denser and more ominous than the mists that often enveloped their village. Amaya experienced both illusions uninhibited, Ouritsu’s skill with the technique becoming more solid alongside his own.
[break][break]
As the tiger lunged, Amaya remained unfazed, his composure intact as the beast vanished just before impact. "Those seemed integrated quite well," he remarked, acknowledging Ouritsu's successful melding of illusions without offering much in the way of advice. This time, it was clear Ouritsu had achieved what they had set out to do.
[break][break]

Amaya decided to experiment with a new combination of techniques as well. Drawing his blade, he positioned it to catch the last rays of the setting sun, creating a dazzling play of light. The shimmering reflection made Amaya appear slightly displaced from his actual position, unknowingly to Ouritsu. [break][break]

Amaya would raise his blade, bringing it downwards, activating the second illusion. This one would cause a blinding light to appear. It was odd trying this method with two different techniques, at first, but they fell in line easily with how much practice he had had. With a deliberate motion, Amaya brought his blade down, unleashing an illusion of blinding light. Despite the initial unfamiliarity, the illusions took shape with surprising ease.

CHAKRA USAGE: Low[break]
CLASSIFICATION: Genjutsu[break]
ELEMENT: -[break]
HANDSEALS: -[break]
TRIGGER: Light reflected into target's eyes (ex: off user's blade)[break]
DESCRIPTION:[break]
This is a simple Genjutsu which slightly alters the opponent's field of vision. The user will appear to be slightly displaced than reality, much like looking at a fish through water. This will cause the target to believe the user is in a slightly different position , approximately half a foot different than reality. The user is able to choose in the moment what direction they seemed to be shifted. This technique is useful for hand-to-hand combat as the opponent is likely to dodge into your attack. However, if they are struck they are taken out of the genjutsu.[break][break]

TRIGGER: Visual [Lifting the blade and swinging down][break]
REQUIREMENT: A Blade[break]
DESCRIPTION:[break]
The user molds the chakra and sends it to the target as they lift the blade at an angle as if to block sunlight and then swinging it downward using genjutsu to make them believe a bright flash of light has blinded them for two post rotations allowing the user if they are quick enough to strike them while they are blinded, though it obviously only messes with sight so a person capable of using other senses that is not surprised could use something, like hearing, to not be vulnerable.

The thing Ouritsu had worried about the most with that combination of techniques was the timing as he needed a target to have visibility long enough to see the tiger before the fog rolled in, and it seemed that he had gotten it correct given Amaya's words. That was certainly a relief given it was one of the first times he had used those two jutsu together and if there was any time to have issues it was now while the stakes were low. "Good to hear, I haven't used those two much together." The Chunin replied.

He'd watch as the genin readied himself for the next attempt, drawing a blade and angling it as such for the sunlight to shine right into Ouritsu's eyes, and while on the surface it was nothing more than a mild annoyance what the Nohime hadn't noticed was the shifting perspective of where saw Amaya compared to where he actually was; had they been fighting his attacks would have missed by a sizable margin. The blade would once more come into play and with a swing a blinding light would fill the Iwa-nin's eyes causing him to lift an arm to try and block it out. Messing with one's perspective and sight was a damning combination and would no doubt create an opportunity to attack or flee depending on what the situation called for.

"Yep, that's definitely some bright light, but is there a second technique coming or did I miss it?" Ouritsu inquired still unaware that the Amaya he had seen from before the blinding light wasn't the true one.

It had never occurred to Amaya, until that moment unexplained, to explain the second illusion which would have been indiscernible. He would have to clarify the nature of the illusion to Ouritsu, explaining the deceptive shift in his apparent location. Yet, his inability to perceive the illusion only spoke to its efficacy. [break][break]
"This illusion makes me appear in a slightly different place,” Amaya elucidated, bridging the gap in Ouritsu's perception by reaching out to him. The demonstration, where Amaya's illusory touch failed to correspond with physical contact, would explain the differences. "It’s quite a useful technique, though I rarely employ it.”[break][break]

Even with the brief distraction of conversation, Amaya was surprised to find that his illusions held steadily. Previously, maintaining such techniques was a challenge that taxed his focus and chakra reserves, often proving unsustainable for long durations. Yet, in this instance, the illusions persisted with surprising ease, marking a significant improvement in his control and efficiency. [break][break]

Amaya decided to conclude his demonstration, mindful of the discomfort the bright flash could have caused. He was ready to step back and observe Ouritsu's techniques, eager to see how the other shinobi would take the reigns.

bleed it out
Feeling a touch elsewhere from where he perceived Amaya's hand to be was an odd sensation and had the two been in a fight Ouritsu would have been ripe for an attack while being none the wiser. The genin had done a fantastic job of picking two genjutsu that complimented each other well and giving himself an opportunity to layer the second technique even if it had been against a moving target. "A forced perspective change, huh? That's a new one." Ouritsu replied with a hum, it was something he'd definitely have to look into down the road.

New techniques aside they were in the thick of training now and there wasn't much to chit chat about so it was time to get onto the next set of jutsu. The chunin did like the idea of messing with perception so he'd stick with that theme for his next attempt. Interlocking his fingers together it would look as Ouritsu was setting up a ninjutsu technique in which multiple rows of earthen spikes would protrude from the ground around him, when in reality the Iwa-nin simple began whistling in an increasing pitch which would cause a painful ringing sensation to envelop Amaya.

Knowing how painful it could be the Nohime would end the jutsu after only a few moments as to not cause too much distress, and with the fading of the ringing sound would go the spikes as well revealing the ground to be undisturbed.

NAME: Ato Rigen [Pride Cometh Before The Fall]
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Medium
CLASSIFICATION: Genjutsu
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
TRIGGER: Visual
DESCRIPTION:
There is nothing better than outsmarting one's opponent. This Genjutsu seeks to play on that. A visual Genjutsu that is activated by seeing the user interlocking their fingers, from there the technique begins. It will appear as though the target is performing a Ninjutsu technique that is most familiar to the user. If a target is someone who does not utilize any handseals, this will not affect them.

In reality, the visual Genjutsu masks the user's hands, free to do whatever: throw a Kunai, perform a different technique, whatever would please them.

NAME: Itai Kanetsuki no Jutsu [Painful Ringing Technique]
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: To Use: Low | To Maintain: Very Low
CLASSIFICATION: Genjutsu
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
TRIGGER: Auditory
DESCRIPTION:
A technique that serves as a wonderful distraction or crippling attack. This technique causes the target to hear a high pitched tone in their ear, it being so painful that most targets claw at their ears. The technique is initiated through the audio cue of a whistle going from low to high. Due to this, many individuals have mistaken this technique for sound ninjutsu.

The back-and-forth exchange of genjutsu between Amaya and Ouritsu was a unique approach to shinobi training. Switching roles between the caster and the target facilitated a direct understanding of layered genjutsu This method, though unconventional, was essential for this type of learning. [break][break]

Ouritsu's response was swift, plunging Amaya into a world where the ground itself erupted. The illusion of earthen spikes thrusting from the soil nearly caused a visceral reaction; even with the knowledge of its falseness, Amaya's instinctual desire for self-preservation momentarily unsettled his balance. An immediate, almost instinctive reaction.[break][break]

The second illusion ratcheted the intensity further, assaulting Amaya's senses with a debilitating ringing that seemed to permeate every fibre of his being. The vividness of the experience brought Amaya’s hands over his ears. Its abrupt onset and its equally swift resolution, left a lingering disorientation.[break][break]

"Effective…" The word was edged with respect and a hint of discomfort. While the training had largely steered clear of discomfort, these latest illusions had momentarily tipped the scales, challenging Amaya's composure. Yet, he recognized the value in the experience, the transient nature of the discomfort a small price for the insights gained.[break][break]

Feeling that they had each pushed the boundaries of their genjutsu abilities and learned from the experience, Amaya sensed it was time to transition from practice to reflection.[break][break]

"Shall we move on to feedback?" Amaya proposed, ready to shift from the tangible intensity of their illusions to the analytical realm of discussion.

Ouritsu tried his best to shy away from the more disorienting techniques when it came to human practice targets but these were jutsu he was going to use in the field and only being confident in the smaller scale ones when it came to combining them did neither him or his allies any good. Still, once the the two techniques felt like they weren't fighting for dominance with one another the chunin was quick to end them as to not leave Amaya in too much pain.

The feedback wasn't word heavy but the look on the face of the genin was enough to tell that something had taken hold. They'd shift from practicum to analysis of their efforts which brought a silent relief to the Nohime as he was honestly getting a bit winded from spamming jutsu in such short succession and was more than happy to take a break. "Yeah sounds good. Biggest thing I noticed during your attempts was the timing being a bit off here and there. Depending on the technique the time it can take to start affecting someone can vary, but it's still important to not leave too big a gap between them so your opponent doesn't get hip to what's going on." The Iwa-nin spoke hoping he didn't leave anything out of his feedback.

Truth be told Amaya had done great in all his attempts and his skill in genjutsu was probably better than Ouritsu's own when he was a genin.

As Ouritsu shared insights from their practice, Amaya listened closely, each point echoed his own observations he made throughout the session. It was useful to confirm that his self-assessments aligned with another perspective. This exchange shows that their efforts had led somewhere useful. Being able to practice layering genjutsu together provided further clarity. The next steps were clear, Amaya no longer felt as if he were grasping at straws. [break][break]

Though Amaya found himself with little of use to provide Ouritsu with feedback, he felt compelled to come up with some insights. It was an exchange, after all, and withholding feedback would do a disservice to their effort. "Beyond the first attempt, I think you’ve got a strong handle on the technique. The chakra distribution seems to be the only thing that requires work,” he observed, aiming to contribute something constructive for Ouritsu.[break][break]

Amaya regarded Ouritsu, a mere stranger from the Stone who offered his assistance. "Thank you,” Amaya expressed his gratitude, yet his tone carried no warmth. He offered a bow, a gesture of respect and appreciation for the guidance Ouritsu had provided. After a moment of silent acknowledgment, Amaya turned to leave, his departure marked by a curt nod.[break][break]
