♔ Shortly before Shiu hammered his fist down unto An's arm, a thick cloud of something began pumping out from the young girl's body. Having seen the use of smoke bombs prior and her match prior, Shiu had already been primed to anticipate gaseous attacks such as this. Without much thought, he held his breath as he plunged the needle of ice down into her arm.
This did nothing to protect his eyes, however. The exposure to the spores from her first release had already begun to prick tears from his eyes, when all of a sudden, the cloud around her thickened even more, and he found the light of everything he saw dimming rapidly and in such a way that more smoke, or whatever manner of fog it was that kept pouring from her body, alone could not account for.
Involuntarily, as the remainder of what he had been able to see shrank then winked out of visibility altogether, he hitched a breath. Shiu regretted this immediately.
A tingling, itching sensation skittered through his nostrils and down into his throat. His body rejected this with violence, a heaving cough racking his entire body. Shiu took a step back, but he felt unsure of his footing, unable to see in front of him, to the side, nothing in his periphery.
Panic that he had never once anticipated facing in these exams, let alone this match, began to claw at him. Each cough that seemed to heave from his very lungs made him feel like he was dying, that he would never take another fresh breath of air again. No matter how hard he coughed, how much of his own mucus came up with it in an attempt to protect him, it was not enough to expel this foreign invasion upon his respiratory senses.
What had this girl done to him?
The back of his hand came up to his lips in some pathetic attempt to stifle his coughing, or at least keep some semblance of control and dignity as his body was overwhelmed with the need to cough and cough. The entire time, though, he could not see a thing.
Suddenly, without any warning to his sensibilities, heat flared at his side, and he heard the deep, guttural roar of an explosion.
The shock wave of the explosion's force slammed into him with impunity. Shiu was flung back, evicted from the very earth beneath his feet, and wind gales whipping strands of hair free from where he'd tied them back, now slapping against his cheeks. The impact of the explosion was more than enough to undo the effects of his Hiding in Frost Technique, dropping the superficial appearance of invisibility that had obscured his form, leaving only the frost left still on the ground. He was visible to all, and all would be able to see him land hard on his shoulder, then tumble down the arena several times over before he could finally skid to a halt.
His head swam with disorientation. A sharp ringing screeched inside his ear, and though he knew logically he was no longer moving, he still could not see, and the ground beneath him felt a choppy to him as if he had been floating sidelong over the tides of the ocean. A painful burning seared along the left side of his body. Shiu knew from same vague warm, oozing shift along his skin that he must have been bleeding, but he had no time to assess the extent of the damage. He had no idea where he was, he could not look at himself, and he did not know when the next attack would come.
Shiu began to prop himself up on his uninjured arm just as another series of coughs punctuated his breath, shaking his whole body with it. Again, he tried to raise the back of his hand to cover his mouth, in some futile attempt to keep some of his dignity in tact.
As the ringing in his ear faded out but nothing else changed, the thought flashed through his mind that he may never be able to see again, and that terrified him more than anything. What had that girl done to him? He was going to kill her.
With a pang of clarity, he remembered his brother. Enyo had been right there with him when the cloud had enveloped them, and likely he had been there, too, when the explosion had been set off. Where was he now?
Attempting to control his coughing, Shiu swung his arm down to the ground in front of him, only to find no body, just the crunch of frost beneath his fingertips. No sign of his brother.
Something fell in the pit of his stomach. He needed Enyo, to know that he was safe. It was the only real verification that would prove to him that he was still alive. Without him, he felt like a limb had been cut from his body, that he was just some rabid dog left grappling for something unattainable and biting at dust.
He pushed himself to sit up, some barely suppressed coughs still hiccuping out from him as he did so, then staggered uneasily to his feet. In the brief reprieve he had between coughs, Shiu summoned what strength he had left for a voice he never raised. "Enyo!"
It was enough to send him into another irritated fit of coughing, loud and into his hand. Though his throat still burned, at least with each cough it was becoming easier for him to breath, and that incessant need to get something out of him was becoming less and less.
All of his focus on simply trying to get his bearings once more, he was wholly unaware of the swallow-shaped shuriken hurtling towards him. Without intervention, the other explosion would strike Shiu, and likely concuss him.
