The clan sought to elevate him as the beacon of their struggling minor lineage in Kirigakure, while the village harboured lofty anticipations, likely to thrust him into perilous missions stained with blood.

"♩ ♪ Hey! Put on a happy face, then everything's okay ♫ ♬" The upbeat melody emanating from the radio felt like a cruel parody of his existence. Despite always putting a smile on his face, it was nothing more than a mask concealing his true feelings of discontent. As if on cue, his worst fears materialised: a sharp knock at the door and he was handed a mission envelope.

Shō tore open the sealed letter, revealing an urgent and classified mission awaiting him. An affluent noble was requesting assistance in purging corruption within his ranks. His task: journey to Kagamino no Shi to discern the threat and identify those requiring elimination. The noble had asserted that his life hung in the balance, most likely plotted by a treacherous relative.

Within moments of unfolding the missive, it ignited into flames. It was a testament to the latest innovation from Kamenoko Mamori, the Jibukinshin. The self immolation letter served as a safeguard for private communication, ensuring its secrets remained shrouded in secrecy.

Despite his abhorrence of violence, he reluctantly agreed to undertake the mission, feeling compelled by circumstance. It wasn't merely duty towards his village and his clan that motivated him, but his sister. Only by excelling the task only then he could shield his sister from the very grim fate that he was treading.

With resolve fueling his steps, he made his way to the Administrative District, adorned in the flowing elegance of his hakama and kimono. "Gūre Shō, Tokubetsu Jōnin." The blue-haired young boy announced to the guard.

After clearing the initial checkpoint, he veered towards the edge of the district, navigating through the shadows of its darkest alley. Entering the alley with his vibrant azure garments, he emerged from the labyrinthine passage with an entirely different outfit. His face no longer visible under the peculiar yet soothing white mask, and none of his appearance could be seen under the cloak of midnight-blue attire.

His movement came to a halt before a seemingly inconspicuous building. Though its exterior was like every other building, it stood as the most restricted building within the entire district.

Ascending to its rooftop with ease, Sho whispered to the vigilant guard, "The Hanged Man”, which he was then swiftly given the passage into the mysterious building.

The building to which Shou had been admitted had little to nothing in the way of making it stand out from the other buildings around it, except for perhaps the fact that more people entered than exited, and those who were allowed access were of a very specific kind. Still, of itself, it did very little to draw attention. And just as the outside of the building was quite unextraordinary in its blandness, so was the room into which the Tokubetsu Jounin was allowed access. It had absolutely no defining features, maybe except for the door that Shou had come in through, and another door at the other end of the room.

There was no one and nothing else in the room, except a small wooden table on which sat a single radio. Although its volume was turned down considerably, the room was quiet enough for Shou to be able to hear what was being played. Interestingly, it was the same song he had heard just before the message for this mission had arrived. For a while, the song played, but even as it continued, a puddle of water seeped into the room from the door on the far side of the room. The water unnaturally coalesced to form a human shape, as a figure materialized from it, smiling lazily at Shou.

"Something to report?" the Hozuki asked, looking at the masked figure.

To be honest, it had been a while since he had returned to this building. After being away for a year of fieldwork outside the village, that much was certain. "Speaking of which, have they done a renovation or something? Hmm... it seems to be deteriorating." Shō thought, though to be fair, the building wasn't meant to attract any unwanted attention, so the poor state was kind of reasonable.

Suddenly, a puddle of water materialised to greet him, interrupting his train of thought. If Shō’s memory didn't fail him, it was the signature of the Hozuki. The Hozuki then inquired about his intentions. Under the guise of his new appearance, Shō, now known as The Hanged Man, turned to face his "receptionist”.

He inclined his head respectfully towards the Hozuki. "Yes, sir." he responded evenly, his voice muffled by the mask. "I've been tasked with investigating a matter of urgency in Kagamino no Shi."

Following a short pause for him to recall the contents of the burnt letter, he attempted to repeat whatever he could remember. "A noble requires assistance in rooting out corruption within his ranks, citing the risk of mortal danger from a treacherous relative. I would appreciate having additional information about the task if possible." In his mind, he was thinking about something like a map or something.

The Hozuki waited as Shou replied, indicating the mission he had been given in Kagamino no Shi. But the 'receptionist' did not make any further action, until the masked ninja had given more details. It seemed to be a sort of verification exercise, as one could not turn in the mission detail scroll, said item having combusted after it had been read. If whoever was taking the mission could not remember what it was they had been tasked with doing, then maybe that was a cue to investigate other avenues of occupation aside being a ninja.

The Hozuki finally flashed a toothy grin. "Ah, the Hanged Man," he said, turning and walking towards the door at the far end of the room. "Come with me." So saying, he led Shou into a smaller room with a small desk just by the door. Opening a drawer in the desk, he pulled out two scrolls and handed the masked ninja the first one. "Wakayama Jinnai is our client. Good chap, if you ask me, and favorably disposed to our village; keep that in mind. This scroll contains the names of three relatives who might be behind the threat on his life." Afterwards, he held out the second. "This contains a map of Wakayama Manor, where you will carry out your mission. I advise that you commit the details of the floor plans to memory. Your purpose is to not only find and neutralize the assassin, but also uncover whoever gave them this task."

"Does the Hōzuki always look that fishy?" The young Gurē pondered silently, unaware that many of his fellow villagers also harboured similar thoughts about him and his clan being peculiar with their mushroom related abilities. Shō never quite grasped why, as he regarded fungi in the same light as any other edible plant.

Pushing aside these useless thoughts, he followed the Hōzuki towards the far end of the room. His steps were somewhat awkward, part of it was due to the narrow pathway and another part was because his vision was partially obstructed by the bad fitting mask. It had been a while since he had worn this particular mask, and it seemed to no longer sit quite right with his grown face. "Perhaps I should change it immediately after this..."

As the Hōzuki briefed him on the mission, Shō listened attentively. As expected, he was provided with the floor plans for memorisation. As a seasoned infiltrator, he understood the importance of knowing the layout down to the minute level. When instructed to also uncover the source of the assassination's order, he nodded. Deep down, he also had the desire to unravel the truth of the whole situation, he was never a person who approached his task mindlessly like a killing machine.

"Understood." He responded with a deep voice. "Is there anything else I need to know before departing?" The young man asked.

The Hozuki shrugged noncommittally when Shou asked if there was anything else he needed to know regarding the mission. "Eh, I don't think there's anything more from the top brass which you're required to be aware of, regarding this mission," he replied, before sliding the open desk drawer closed with his hip. "How you choose to go about this mission is at your discretion, as is the level of subterfuge you deem necessary to use. As long as our client is satisfied and happy at the end of it all, we're good. Of course, for him to be happy, he has to be first and foremost alive.

I guess I should also add that however you choose to deal with the assassin and their patron is your prerogative, but you are advised to use discretion based on our client's preferences. Still, the fact that Kirigakure assigned this task to you means that we fully trust that you have both the physical and mental requirements to execute this mission satisfactorily, and that includes judgment of whatever situations you find yourself in."

The Hozuki began to liquefy, as he flashed his toothy grin. "Oh, just a freebie advice: well-fitting clothes are not only helpful for movement, but also improve professional aesthetics." And with that, he fully dissolved into a puddle of water, which seeped through some cracks in the floor to leave Shou alone in the small room.

"Understood." Shō nodded firmly, with a strong determination of not letting anyone perish under his watch. "No one will meet their end while I'm on duty." He reaffirmed silently to himself in his mind. Despite the Hōzuki's reminder, Shō did not change his decision of not resorting to lethal force, even against the perpetrator. He preferred to apprehend them, listen to what they said, and have them face proper investigation rather than engage in a deadly confrontation from the outset.

"Oh?" Shō glanced down at his clothing when the Hōzuki pointed out his attire. "Ah, right. I'll make sure to address that. Thank you for the advice." he responded nicely, though inwardly he felt a huge load of embarrassment. The suddenness of the mission had caught him off guard, leaving him with insufficient time to dress appropriately. However, that was no excuse for a professional like himself.

Once the Hōzuki departed the room using their signature liquefaction technique, Shō prepared to leave using his own signature techniques. However, he halted just before forming the necessary hand seals. It dawned on him that he needed to conceal his identity. Opting for caution, he decided to exit the room on foot, making his way to a secluded alley before utilising Ikō to infiltrate a nearby restroom and change back into his original attire.

As a Hunter-nin, he knew better than to purchase masks from public shops, as doing so could potentially reveal his identity. While the same risk applied to his clothing, it was less likely to be a cause for concern, given that they were mass produced and widely traded.

Once his preparations were complete, Shō made his way to the Northwestern gate and proceeded to the nearby port, situated next to the village's river. As the primary maritime gateway to the outer sea, the port was heavily fortified and well-equipped. "One one-way business class ticket to Kagura no Mura, please." he requested with a smile.

Based on his assessment of the map and his familiarity with naval travel, Shō estimated that the journey would take more than a day. Nonetheless, it was expected to be faster than traversing on foot, especially considering the geographical barriers separating Kirigakure no Sato from Kagura no Mura, including mountains and rivers.

It seemed this particular day was a good one to travel on. The sun was out and shining vigorously, but there were enough clouds to make the brightness of the day not particularly oppressive. A nice wind, blowing from the sea, also served to make the ambience pleasant. It was as cheerful a day as one could expect to have. Shou's travel by land to the coast in order to take a ship to Kagura no Mura would be pleasant and mostly uneventful. At the port, his request for the business ticket was granted, and the shinobi would be given a ticket to a large and sturdy-looking ship called the Umi no Iruka.

On the Umi no Iruka, Shou would discover that his business ticket gave him access to a relatively less-crowded deck, as well as the comfort of a personal room and toilet facility. Even though the journey to Kagura no Mura would take just about a day, the fact that someone would pay for a business ticket meant that the ship proprietors would ensure they had as comfortable a journey as could be afforded, no matter how short the distance. For someone such as Shou, it meant he had the luxury of a private place in which to prepare for his mission undisturbed.

"Worth every single penny." Shō mused as he settled into his comfortable surroundings. While the ticket had come with a hefty price tag, the superior services and amenities were too enticing to pass up. Besides, the ticket expenses were fully claimable (lol), so he didn't even think twice purchasing the higher class ticket. If it weren't for the claim limit imposed on Tokubetsu Jōnin, he would have gone for the first class with no hesitation.

With approximately a full day until reaching the destination, he decided to make the most of his free time. While relaxation was a priority, he opted to start by studying the targeted village and memorise the map he had received earlier to memory. That should go without saying, preparation was crucial to ensure a mission's success. A few hours wasn't much, but it was better than not preparing at all.

After he was done with the preliminary preps, he proceeded to test his disguises, the clothing he just purchased in the morning. While the mission could technically be carried out in plain clothes, it appeared that the village preferred to avoid public involvement in the matter. The decision was logical and understandable, given the potential political ramifications of the situation if things went wrong. Concealing his identity seemed like a prudent measure to mitigate any potential complications.

If nothing out of the ordinary occurred during that period, Shō would spend the remaining time lying on the fluffy bed in his personal room until the next morning.

The sea trip went along rather nicely, and the fair weather which had been present when the Kiri ninja had embarked on this journey had held for the most part, even if Shou wouldn't probably be able to tell, as he had been holed up in his quarters all day. But Shou's business was his own, and nobody would disturb him for it; he had after all paid for the privacy, and was not doing anything illegal.

Shou's choice to spend his remaining time resting was a good one; the gentle rocking of the waves and the coolness of the night ensured that he had a good night's rest, which was usually best for when one had a busy day ahead. The Tokubetsu Jounin would be long awake, though, before he heard the sound of a gong being rung on deck, signifying that the ship was coming to the end of its voyage.

If Shou came out to spend the remainder of the voyage on deck, he would see that the small harbor of Kagura no Mura, as well as the city that lay beyond, was enveloped in the thick mists that were so common across the span of Mizu no Kuni, that gave his home village its name.

As a nature lover, Shō wouldn’t miss the scenery of the islands as the ship got close to the destination. Before the bell even rings, he was already cleaning the bed and packing his belongings, then went to the deck to check out the view. The harbour of Kagura no Mura appeared slightly obscured by mist, a common occurrence in their country since they were located in the hot zone of coastal mist. Yeah, that was also how Kirigakure got its name.

Upon the ship's arrival, Shō wasted no time in heading to the restroom to change his disguise. He donned a beautiful wig of white short hair, a temporary tattoo on his neck, and a set of red and gold attire, ensuring both disguise and mobility. Reflecting on the discomfort of ill-fitting clothing, this time he made sure he put on the right clothes.

"Can't risk compromising the mission for the sake of style." he muttered to himself as he scrutinised his appearance in the mirror. The stranger staring back at him bore no resemblance to the man named Shō, and from now on, he would go by the name Tsurudan. It might sound absurd, and intentionally so, as it was derived from the characters 吊男, meaning "Hanged Man" somehow.

With the fake identity card forged in advanced, he continued his journey towards the destination.

Even though it was early morning, Kagura no Mura seemed to be just coming out of a busy phase, not unlike a city at the end of rush hour. While this would be normally odd for a normal town, those who were familiar with the small port settlement would know that most of the activities that took place in Kagura no Mura did not begin until night had fallen. Morning was the end of the 'business' period, and a good number of the denizens of the port town would be turning in to sleep, even as the Umi no Iruka pulled into port.

Small town though it was, it was clear that security was not taken for granted, and everyone disembarking from the ship had to show some form of identification at a security checkpoint to be allowed into the town. Shou was met, when it came to his turn, by a tired-eyed but talkative portly fellow, with the Kirigakure hitai-ate on his forehead. "Hello, 'Whitey'," he drawled, as he checked the undercover shinobi's forged papers, "nice outfit." He paused when he saw the name on the ID, then chuckled. "Guess, someone didn't like you when they were naming you, but who am I to give opinions? I think the name is cool, though." He handed Shou's documents back with a lazy smile, obviously having seen nothing out of place in the extremely high-quality forgery (expected, as it had been issued by Kirigakure itself).

"Headed for the capital? She's a beauty, that place. Enjoy your trip there," he concluded, waving Shou past the security checkpoint.

Shō responded to the guard's parting words with a nod of gratitude before blending into the flow of pedestrian traffic. As he walked, he couldn't help but ponder whether he chose the right alias. The pronunciation of the name Tsuru sounded passable, but the kanji he had selected felt somewhat… weird..

"Was it too fake? Too outlandish?" He mused silently with his brow furrowing in contemplation. "But if it makes someone chuckle, maybe it's effective?" Despite the questionable choice of kanji, it seemed to serve its intended purpose of deflecting suspicion, at least for now.

As a descendant of the Gure clan, he had the ability to traverse through the flora and fauna using the signature Ikō but he opted to continue his journey on foot. As mentioned, he had to hide his identity well. Using the underground travelling jutsu risked alerting the sensor and getting himself exposed.

He glanced at the map in his hand under the morning sun, double-checking the planned route as he mentally rehearsed potential dialogues for the encounters that lay ahead. "Keep calm Shō, you can do it." He repeatedly calmed himself down as he ventured deeper into the the bustling streets, his senses remained alert, keenly looking for any signs of trouble or surveillance.
