Nayu, accustomed to the sandy embrace of her village, paid no heed to the grains dancing around her as she made her way to the appointed meeting spot. Though tardy, she had a valid excuse.

"Kanae," she lightly tapped him on the shoulder, announcing her presence as the sand obediently formed his name, a signature Nayu greeting. "Sorry for keeping you waiting. On my way here, I stumbled upon this adorable white-furred cat that instantly made me think of you. I just had to stop and admire it for a bit," she explained with an apologetic grin, "and before I knew it, time slipped away. My bad!" Nayu clasped her hands together, her expression warm and friendly, seeking forgiveness.

"Instead, let's focus on teaching you the Cloak of Invisibility Technique," she suggested, knowing Kanae could sense her expression even if he couldn't see with his eyes. "You brought the blanket with you, right?” After confirming that Kanae indeed had brought a blanket with him, "Now, where shall we begin?" As Nayu pondered, the sand formed her thoughts into words. "Ah! How about you demonstrate your current abilities, and we'll build from there? Maybe against that wall?" that was the way the teachers would usually assess them before beginning some practical lesson, and Nayu decided to do the same.

As the sand carried by the light wind blew past his feet, Kanae could feel the warmth within it. It wasn't much, though, making the boy guess that it was still early morning. And that was the limit of what he could feel. Born without sight, he could not see the world the way normal people do. However, his other senses were much better due to the disability.

Before Nayu tapped his shoulder, Kanae could already feel her coming from a dozen feet away. Still, he preferred to act like he didn’t know his best friend was approaching. As soon as the tap came, he turned around to greet his friend with a warm smile. "As usual from our beloved Yu-chan." Kanae responded after interpreting the sand letters.

Eh?!?!? You must be wondering, why was the girl communicating using letters, and why could the boy see the letters even though he was blind? Well, the thing is, Nayu was actually mute. Unable to produce any speech meant that the only way she could convey her thoughts was through words. Fortunately, Nayu was able to control sand due to her lineage, and with that, she could form letters without much effort.

Kanae, on the other hand, although he was stripped of sight, could feel the surroundings using echolocation. That doesn’t magically allow him to see words, though. Because the words formed by Nayu were solid three dimensional, the blind boy was able to pick up the shape through echolocation.

"Oh? That was kind of sudden…" Kanae exclaimed at Nayu's thought of training. But then he realised they had been in the academy for quite some time. In order to progress, they must learn all the basic academy techniques. "Fair enough, it's been a while since I've been stuck in this jutsu." Without wasting any more time, he quickly attempted the jutsu near an obstacle, which, of course, ended up in failure. "How was it?" he asked, while camouflaging near the wall with an entirely mismatching colour.

As Nayu observed Kanae's attempt at blending with his surroundings, a hopeful idea sparked within her. Gesturing for him to pause, she conveyed through the gentle movements of sand-formed letters, "Kanae, I have a thought. Even though you can't see the colors, what if you tried sensing them through your chakra instead? Your chakra is so closely linked to your senses. By extending it outward, you might just pick up on the subtle shifts in color around you."

Her eyes bright with determination, Nayu paused to let the concept sink in before continuing, "Imagine tuning your chakra to the colors of your environment. Feel the warmth of the sandy tones, the coolness of the shadows, the liveliness of the foliage. Let your chakra merge with those colors, becoming one with them."

"Now, try touching the wall and the blanket when I'm not using the jutsu," she prompted, giving him time to discern the subtle distinctions. Once she sensed he grasped it, Nayu moved forward with the lesson, channeling her chakra through her body with a precise control into the blanket, changing its color to match the sandy wall.

It's a marvel where the stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway gives rise to involuntary experiences in another. For instance, individuals with synesthesia might see colours when enveloped in music, witness shapes while inhaling specific scents, or taste flavours when gazing upon words.

What Nayu proposed was actually into the realm of experiencing colours through touch, it was perhaps the rarest form of synesthesia. This, unfortunately, wasn't something Kanae was born with. His mother (foster) attempted to impart this skill on him, but regrettably, he failed to learn it. "I wish I could, though."

Yet, just because he wasn't born with that ability didn't mean Nayu's suggestion was out of reach. Kanae quickly devised a workaround strategy: memorising the colour of an object through its defining characteristics, such as texture, shape, and even how sound resonates upon contact with it. The last step might have sounded absurd, but considering he was adept at echolocation, it didn't pose much difficulty for him.

Kanae then leaned towards the wall, his fingers delicately tracing its surface to discern its texture. Once etched into his memory, he initiated a subtle change of colour of his hand. "Is this the right colour?" It was clearly incorrect, yet it didn't really matter. He only needed to keep on changing the colour until he hit the right one.

He refocused his attention on the wall where there were shifts in light and shadow which he obviously couldn't see. With a determined breath, he resumed his efforts to replicate its nuanced colouring, guided by Nayu's patient instruction.

He pondered the concept of shading, recalling snippets of lessons from his academy days. Shading, he recalled, was the result of light being partially obstructed, casting areas of darkness amidst patches of illumination.

The shade couldn’t be sensed and "tagged".

Nayu beamed with a bright, youthful smile, which was hidden beneath her mouth guard, her eyes alight with excitement as she looked at Kanae. "You're welcome, Kanae!" the sand would carry her voice which was intended to sound cheerfully and melodious as a songbird's. "I'm happy to help!"

With a gentle giggle, she patted Kanae's shoulder, her touch light and comforting. "Shading can be tricky, but you're doing great!" the sand continued to change its shape. "Just keep trying, and you'll get it!" Nayu loved helping others learn and grow, especially when it came to something as fun as ninjutsu.

"Remember, it's okay to make mistakes," Nayu reminded him, her tone would have been gentle and encouraging. "That's how we learn!" With a nod of determination, Nayu took a few steps back and continued to watch and help out Kanae as he got back to work. She knew he had what it takes to succeed, and she couldn't wait to see his progress.

Nayu would stay and look over Kanae as long as he needed to succeed. Afterwards, as it was common between students after a good training session she would offer Kanae to go and have some dessert or snack to end the day on a good note.

First thing first, he kept on training on memorising the objects through its texture by touching. Then relying on multiple senses to memorise the associated colours of objects. Thanks to the heat retention theory, it provided some insight into determining colours.

Last, also the most difficult part was the shading. Relying on all the principles he had learned earlier, he attempted to estimate the shading. Though met with both failures and successes, he persevered, gradually getting closer to consistently succeeding on blending seamlessly with nearby objects, much like a chameleon.

Knowing that his journey towards mastery would extend beyond a day's worth of training, Kanae decided to continue his efforts in the days to come. But for now, he was desperately in need of dinner, which he was about to share a well-deserved meal with Nayu.
