CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED Mikio was chronically prone to kidnapping individual students for Special Lessons periodically, a quirk that the senior sensei were growing more and more tolerant of as the months went on. Though to some it might have seemed like a waste of time, spending so much effort doing one-on-one and small group lessons, time and time again the students the came out the other side of Mikio’s Special Lessons had learned more, and were more excited to learn more. There were some exceptions of course—not every student enjoyed wrestling with predator cats as large as they were—but by and large, she was seeing a lot of success as a teacher. Today, little Yugao Uka was Mikio’s victim once again. Rather than the academy training yard, Mikio had whisked the girl away to Arashi Teien. The rain was heavy and the small forest within the park was picturesque and beautiful—sure, there was a ‘no fighting’ policy, but it wasn’t like they’d be really fighting anyone today! Azuki and Maru flanked Mikio as the little party made their way to the park, Mikio skipping through puddles and seemingly oblivious to the odd stares that turned her way as they broached the treeline and into the forest. "Uka-kooo~” Mikio sang as they walked, "Mimi-sensei has a very special treat for you today! Uka-ko has lots of friends just like Mimi-sensei does, so Mimi-sensei thinks that this will be a good thing to teach! What does Uka-ko know about…” She paused for effect, then spun in place, swiping her hands out in a mock-attack. "Pack tactics!?” Yūgao Uka -- 265

Uka, with her bright and curious eyes, stood amidst the forest, her hat and hair drenched by the rain. Mikio's mention of "pack tactics" sparked a playful energy within her. Her eyes took a quick glance at the two beasts next to Mikio.

"Could you please explain what pack tactics are?" Uka asked in a bright, inquisitive voice. She continued, "I recall reading about them in some of the scrolls at the academy. Would it be correct to say that pack tactics are when creatures like wolves or lions work together to hunt or defend themselves?"

As she looked around the surrounding trees, Uka pondered how these tactics could be applied in her own life. "It seems like teamwork is essential, knowing when to attack when to defend, and how to coordinate movements to outsmart opponents," she said, her voice filled with curiosity.

Uka's gaze returned to Mikio, and her uncertain smile transformed into one of hope. "Are we going to learn how to do that? To work together with others to achieve something greater than what we could do alone?" Her voice was a mix of curiosity and anticipation, and her eyes shone with excitement.

Her two hands which were holding Momo, squeezed it a bit too hard in excitement leading to a few of her butterflies and moths to fly out, fluttering in a somehow unhappy manner, which in return made Uka soften her grip, "Sorry."

CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED "Mimi-sensei doesn’t need to explain what pack tactics are because Uka already knows perfectly!!” Mikio hollered, entirely too loud for the serene, tranquil environment they were occupying. A few birds took flight from the branches of nearby trees, twittering angrily in protest to the disturbance of their peace. "We are going to learn how to do exactly that!! Pack tactics are Mimi-sensei’s speciality! The clan that Mimi-sensei is from, the Nekomata allllllll the way in Iwagakure, is all about using pack tactics to fight alongside their beloved kitty-cat companions!” Azuki and Maru sat patiently at Mikio’s side; Azuki nodded sagely, as though she had heard and understood this speech a hundred times before. "What Uka-ko is going to learn today,” Mikio continued, "is using pack tactics… with your butterflies!!” It sounded insane, and on some level, Mikio knew that, but she barrelled along regardless to explain herself. "Azuki and Maru work together with Mimi-sensei to distract and occupy our enemies so that Mimi-sensei can go in for a killing blow,” she explained. "There’s no reason why Uka-ko’s butterflies and moths shouldn’t be able to do the exact same thing! With a lot of hard work and practice, anything is possible! Uka's eyes widened with a mix of surprise and excitement at Mikio's proposal. The butterflies and moths usually served as mediums for genjutsu-related techniques in the Yugao clan, but no one has said that they couldn't be used like other familiars and this idea seemed interesting. Who knows, maybe it could even make Uka stand out from the rest of her clan.

"Wow, that sounds incredible!" Uka exclaimed, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "I never thought about my butterflies and moths in that way before. But if Azuki and Maru can do it with Mimi-sensei, then I believe my little friends can too! Though they are quite fragile and small, compared to Azuki and Maru."

She shifted Momo in her arms, making sure to hold her cherished companions gently this time. The butterflies and moths that had escaped fluttered around her, seemingly eager to be a part of this newfound adventure.

Bugs didn’t live for very long anyway, so sacrificing a few in the midst of combat would be sustainable as long as Uka-ko was keeping up a regular breeding cycle and replenishing her supply consistently… if there was one thing Mikio knew exceptionally well, it was animal husbandry, and while she was no expert in the realm of bugs she thought it couldn’t be too dissimilar from the practices she’d employed in the past. But that was a problem for later! "Some of them may die,” Mikio said solemnly, "but that is a sacrifice we have to be willing to make.” Azuki and Maru spent every day at Mikio’s side, and all three of them knew intimately that death was just one mistake around the corner—though Mikio, perhaps, was more distanced from the concept than either of her companions, particularly the aging Azuki. A specific technique… Mikio nodded once, firmly. "Yes! Mimi-sensei wants to teach Uka-ko and her butterflies one of Mimi-sensei’s signature techniques: Nakama: Ibisha. It’s a little more advanced than most of the things Uka-ko is learning at the academy, but Mimi-sensei thinks Uka-ko can handle it! It’s a flanking technique, so the idea is that either Uka-ko or her butterflies is occupying their prey’s defense, while the other hits the prey in the back while the prey is vulnerable.” She paused, considering. "Since Uka-ko’s butterflies and moths aren’t going to be very good at hitting, Mimi-sensei thinks that they should do the occupying, while Uka-ko does the hitting. Maru will be your first opponent!” The younger puma stepped forward, glancing sidelong at Mikio with a doubtful expression, but complying regardless—ready to be distracted and attacked by a young girl and her fluttering insects. The idea of using her butterflies and moths in combat was thrilling, but the thought of them getting hurt was daunting. CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED Mikio’s pupils grew wide and round as the moths and butterflies fluttered out from their little house inside Uka’s plush toy, lasering in on the creatures like a cat eyeing a particularly tasty-looking mouse. Her tail lashed to and fro, but with masterful self-control she reigned in her prey drive and took a couple of steps back, giving Uka, Maru, and the mob of insects plenty of space. One fuzzy pink ear twitched, trying to catch wind of what Uka was saying to the little creatures, but she couldn’t quite make out the words. Maru was a wonderful hunter with incredible instincts—but he was just barely out of kitten-hood, hardly more than a year old, and shared a lot of Mikio’s goofy, playful instincts. Though he started off focused on Uka, the moment that the fluttering insects swarming around his head he became distracted, rising up on his hind legs to swat at the creatures with big, meaty paws. But even as he did so, he left himself vulnerable—he felt the strike of Uka’s palm against his flank and flinched from the surprise of the contact, twisting wildly for a moment as he tumbled, fell, landed tucked against the ground with his tail lashing and his ears flat against his head. "Amazing!!” Mikio said, clapping her hands together excitedly. "Now… it’s Azuki’s turn!!” The elder puma stepped forward, pausing only briefly to groom Maru’s raised hackles and nudge him back towards Mikio’s side. She sat and looked attentively at Uka, her greying muzzle bearing an expression that could almost be described as bored, if it could have an expression at all. Yūgao Uka -- 273

Uka was filled with excitement and relief at Mikio’s praise. She took a moment to steady herself, catching her breath as she watched Maru retreat to Mikio’s side. The butterflies and moths began to return to her, fluttering around her head and shoulders as if to seek her approval. Uka gently patted Momo, her plush toy, offering a quiet thank you to her insect companions for their hard work.

Turning her attention to Azuki, the elder puma, Uka felt a shift in the atmosphere. Azuki’s calm, almost indifferent demeanor presented a new challenge. The elder puma wouldn’t be as easily distracted as Maru.

She squared her shoulders and gave a respectful nod to Azuki, acknowledging the puma’s experience and strength. "Alright, Azuki-san," Uka said softly, her voice carrying a note of respect. "Let's see what we can learn from each other."

Taking a deep breath, Uka silently communicated with her butterflies and moths once more. "This will be tougher," she whispered, "but I believe in us. Spread out and be careful. Distract Azuki-san just enough for me to get in close."

The butterflies and moths took flight again, their tiny wings fluttering as they encircled Azuki. Uka watched closely, studying the elder puma's movements. Uka knew she needed to be swift and precise. She began to move, her steps light and careful as she circled Azuki. Uka waited for the right moment. With a sudden, agile movement, she darted forward, aiming for a quick strike at Azuki’s side.

CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED Azuki inclined her head briefly, acknowledging the respect that Uka showed her before beginning their section of the bout. She was stoic, severe, a silvering matriarch at the height of her power… … which only served to make the sight of her swarmed by fluttering insects all the more ridiculous. Off on the sidelines, Mikio stifled a giggle, bouncing from foot to foot as she watched colorful wings alight on Azuki’s ears and nose and spine. The puma remained still as she was used as a perch for dozens of little winged things, her eyes shifting to and fro as she watched the creatures flutter back and forth. To a casual observer it might have seemed as if she wasn’t paying attention to Uka at all, but those who knew her best—her small son and her pink companion—there was a tell-tale flick of her ear, a lash of her tail that betrayed her awareness of the young student creeping up on her. Right as Uka was about to strike, Azuki uncoiled like a loaded spring, hip-checking Uka while bounding right past her. "Azuki is a tougher cookie than silly Maru,” Mikio whisper-shouted to Uka, as though she could prevent Azuki from overhearing her as she advised her student. "She’s not as easily distracted. If Maru sees something, he’ll chase it… but Azuki sees with her ears and nose and body too, not just her eyes. You have to try to distract more of her senses!” Yūgao Uka -- 245

Uka winced as she recovered from the unexpected hip-check. The elder puma’s agility and awareness were formidable, but Uka was undeterred. She took Mikio’s advice to heart, recognizing that her usual tactics wouldn't suffice against Azuki.

"Thank you, Miyake-sensei," Uka whispered back, determination shining in her eyes. She glanced at her insect companions, who were still fluttering around Azuki, and then took a moment to strategize. "We need a new plan," she murmured to the butterflies and moths. "Azuki-san can sense us with more than just her eyes. We need to be more creative."

She had just the thing in mind: the Butterfly Echo technique.

Taking a deep breath, Uka formed the necessary handseal and concentrated, calling forth her Yūgao Butterflies. They fluttered around her, ready to assist.

"Chou no Hibiki," Uka whispered, feeling the gentle surge of chakra flowing through her. She sent a mental command to her butterflies, who immediately responded by flitting towards Azuki.

The butterflies landed on Azuki's fur, triggering the genjutsu. While the rest of the critters continued to annoy the elder puma from different directions. Almost instantly, phantom sounds of footsteps began to echo around the elder puma. Uka watched closely. The illusion of echoing footsteps seemed to be working.

While taking advantage of the distraction, Uka began to move. She circled Azuki again, this time more confident in her approach.
With the butterflies maintaining the genjutsu, Uka planned her next move. She needed to strike quickly and retreat, just as she had done before. This time, however, the confusion created by the Butterfly Echo hopefully would give her an additional edge.

Uka waited for the right moment, then darted forward. She aimed for Azuki's side once again.

CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED Azuki maintained the appearance of being unperturbed, as stoic as she was; it was clear she was quite convinced that nothing would distract her from her duty. She was implacable, wizened, so much more mature and experienced than this little creature before her… … the insects landed on her fur again, and her ear twitched. Her lip curled ever so slightly, revealing the points of sharp teeth, the only initial sign of her discomfort. Still the creatures fluttered in and out of her vision, but now in addition to the colorful patterns dancing in front of her eyes, there was the sound of footsteps somewhere beside her—no, to the other side—no, behind her— Azuki whirled around to launch herself at her imagined prey, but there was none to be found: leaving herself perfectly vulnerable for Uka’s strike! The elder puma flinched at the contact, her teeth bared… and then she hung her head, comprehending her defeat in the moment that it arrived. She shook herself tip to tail, trying to rid her ears of the distracting sound of footsteps that plagued her, and growing more visibly frustrated the longer the sound persisted. "That’s it exactly, Uka-ko!!” Mikio cheered from the sidelines, rushing in to deliver a congratulatory high-five to the student—though not before weaving a single handseal and issuing a soft, release! to free Azuki from the genjutsu. "Amazing job!! Mimi-sensei really liked how Uka-ko took what we’re practicing and worked your genjutsu skills into it too, that was a really smart way to adapt Mimi-sensei’s style into Uka-ko’s own, and—” She gushed with effusive praise for longer than was strictly necessary, before taking a deep breath and asking, "Does Uka-ko want to keep practicing? Mimi-sensei thought we could break into teams next, Uka-ko and Azuki against Mimi and Maru, so Uka-ko can see how trying to use the same tactics against a team of enemies is different…” If Uka wanted to break for the day, that was fine too—but if she did want to keep practicing, then Mikio was happy to while away the next few hours in training, putting all four of them (and Uka’s colony!) through various drills and exercises until they all learned how to work together better as a team. Catching her breath, Uka listened intently to her mentor's enthusiastic feedback. "Thank you, Miyake-sensei," Uka said, her voice filled with gratitude. "I'm glad my strategy worked. Azuki-san is strong and smart. I still have so much to learn."

She glanced at Azuki, who was recovering from the genjutsu and gave her a respectful nod. The elder puma had provided a formidable challenge, and Uka knew she had to stay humble and focused to continue improving.

Turning back to Mikio, Uka considered her mentor's suggestion. The idea of breaking into teams and facing a new challenge intrigued her. Learning to adapt her tactics against multiple opponents would be invaluable, and working alongside Azuki could teach her even more about teamwork and strategy.

Despite her excitement, Uka felt a sudden, nagging sensation at the back of her mind. Her breath hitched slightly, and she glanced toward the edge of the training ground, her thoughts momentarily distant. Mikio's enthusiastic words reached her, but Uka's focus wavered as she felt a familiar tug—an unspoken call from her family.

She looked back at Mikio, gratitude in her eyes. "Miyake-sensei, thank you so much for your guidance and encouragement. I truly appreciate it," she began, her voice soft but firm. "But I just remembered something important that I need to take care of. I promised my family I would help them today. It's something I can't postpone."

"I’m sorry to leave like this, especially when the training is so exciting," Uka continued, addressing Mikio, Maru, and Azuki. "But I am sure we'll have more opportunities to train together. Thank you for understanding." With a grateful nod, Uka gathered her insect companions and made her way toward the exit of the park.

"Thank you, Miyake-sensei, once again. I’ll see you soon," Uka shouted, her voice carrying a promise of return as her hand waved an enthusiastic goodbye.
