Shinobi were gifted with the ability to do all sorts of physical feats that could shift the very landscape around them, so it only made sense that the missions they were assigned to made use of said abilities, right? Perhaps Souran was born into the world too soon, before a time when common sense was standard, as he couldn't believe that he had been assigned construction work. Building houses, help repairing old ones, the whole nine yards. The boy who could shoot wind from his palms stuck painting and hammering away or whatever they were going to have him doing. Sure, it was technically to keep up the appearances for the fake village so the ruse could continue and yeah that made sense he guessed, but couldn't they have gotten actual construction workers to do this?

Well whatever, it wasn't like he could say no and if there was any silver lining there was another genin assigned so hopefully they'd be able to get it done quickly and at least have some of their day left to do something much more interesting. The young Netsu stood looking at a row of houses in the fake village that had been roped off as a de facto construction zone, all in various states of repair. Some were nearly done, others barely more than a frame and foundation, but none were livable as they currently were. There were a host of other workers in and around the various residences hard at work and with all manner of material sitting around the area.

Another day and yet another boring as hecc mission. At this point Kaoru needed to find whoever it was that he had pissed off and try to make it up to them because he wasn't sure how much longer he could tolerate the sort of bullsnit missions he had been going on. Chasing after a scroll, haunted armour, and the good old hazing ritual of construction work, a staple of any fresh genin's mission roster.

Either they weren't getting more missions in, or this was the best that they had to give to someone like him.... a battle hungry swordsman.

"Maybe I was meant to be born in Kiri..." he mused idly as he scratched at his stomach, bells in his hair jingling with every step as he reached the construction zone sipping on a brightly coloured drink he had picked up at the marketplace. By all the little kami it looked exactly the same as every other time he'd been assigned this mission in his career, by this point he could almost make a house all by himself he was sure, or at least have a good go at it.

"I need to learn a clone jutsu for these things..." he stated before turning to look at the other young man that was just staring with a similar sort of expression on his face, "guessing you're my partner for this mission? Tokonatsu Kaoru." he offered, raising his cup in a salute before taking a loud sip from it. Least getting out to the fake village meant he got to buy food at the discount rate, cheaper than the real village to make up for being in the fake for work.

Still wasn't worth it for such a boring mission.

The distinct sound of bells could be heard over the various noises coming from the construction site, one that nearly made Souran react as a flashback of that weird mission raced through his mind. He turned to see another kid who looked about as enthused as he was who introduced himself as Kaoru. For better or worse he didn't look anywhere as annoying as some of the other genin in Taki but it was still early and there was plenty of time to disappoint. "Yeah... Souran." The surname was worthless so he didn't bother giving it.

Noticing the increasing number of onlookers, an older burly man who had been giving orders to some of the other workers took a quick look at his clipboard before beginning to make his way over to the pair of genin. "You two from the village, I'm guessin'?" He asked rhetorically while lifting up the caution tape allowing them to enter. "We got plenty of work for ya, it's all gotta get done so doesn't matter to me where you start." The man spoke as he continued to walk back towards his original location. "That building over there needs the interior painted, we're still working on laying the foundation for the one next to it but all that lumber you see behind me needs to get moved over there. Also various carpentry and installation work for the other houses if that's more your speed."

He'd give the two genin a moment to ask any questions if they had any before letting them choose where they wanted to start. He didn't care if they worked together or separately so long as they were doing something. Glancing around at the multiple options Souran figured it was best to get the heavy lifting out of the way early as nothing else he'd do today would be as draining. "Guess I'll start with the wood." The boy spoke as he made his way over to the large stacks of lumber. There were sheets, 2x4's and a host of other different cuts. The genin would lift a few long, thin pieces and prop them over his shoulder before beginning to make his way to the designated house.

Kaoru didn't think he had ever worked with this Souran person before, but it seemed that the other Genin was just as thrilled as he was to be stuck on a mission like this one. The quick arrival of one of the workers meant that there wasn't too much time to really get to know his temporary partner, and due to their overall apathy to this job he didn't think either of them would really bother much with it.

Shrugging slightly at the options available, Kaoru followed alongside the other boy towards the piles of wood. He was rather stronger than most genin after all, so moving large quantities of heavy material was perhaps the easiest part of the day for him. If they could clear the wood quickly, then there would be more time for the trickier jobs like painting, not mentioning the fact that they would get the more physically exerting task done quicker as well.

Piling the lumber high on his shoulders, he began to make his way to the house himself, dropping it off before going back for more. It was mindless, repetitive work, but it wasn't particularly difficult. In order to make it even slightly more appealing for himself, Kaoru would try to pick up more than he should, balancing it awkwardly on his head to try and get some sort of training in at the same time.

It was boring, but between the two of them they'd probably get it done quick enough.

Souran's life had never been geared towards construction or anything of that sort though the argument could be made that at least somewhat parts of his body had been engineered and worked on, but that was a far cry from the tasks he had been given today. As he hoisted a bunch of wooden blanks over his shoulder and began to walk towards the designated drop off spot the boy could only wish that he had been given some other tasks that were better suited for his talents. It was true that genin were on the lowest rung among shinobi and there was a lot that they still needed to learn to ensure that when the time came for them to be assigned tougher missions the chances of them returning home would be higher, but he just didn't see how any of this helped with the former.

He supposed it could have been worse and while his mission partner wasn't super talkative that was actually one of the better things about today. Other genin he knew just didn't have the ability it seemed to know when to shut up but this Kaoru fella looked to be wanting to get this over with just as much as he did and not wasting time on idle chit chat meant they'd get along just fine.

Thankfully it only took a few trips to get the lumber moved leaving the Netsu a bit surprised at how much effort it had taken to move some pieces of wood. Having seen their initial task completed the foreman would then direct the two genin to a nearly completed house --at least on the outside-- that was in need of some painting. Inside would be buckets of paint of various colors along with rollers of all sizes. Another worker would then explain which color needed to be used for upstairs and downstairs, respectively, and to only worry about getting a single room completed. "You want upstairs or downstairs?" Souran asked of Kaoru. It didn't matter to him either way though since he wasn't an artist by any stretch of the imagination maybe being able to pick a room that wouldn't really show how bad of a painter he was would have been a good idea.

It was hardly the most extensive training he had done, but moving the piles of wood in increasingly difficult ways was enough to get him some sort of workout. With muscles comfortably warm, Kaoru followed his temporary partner to the next location, hands behind his head casually as he walked. It was dull work really, but at least it seemed like it would be over soon, the guy he was working with wasn't the sort to mess around and waste time which was a nice thing when dealing with such a dull job.

"Eh, I can take upstairs I guess," he said with a shrug as he grabbed the relevant paint, not particularly fussed either way and uncaring of what exactly he had to do so long as it got him out of this mission sooner rather than later.

"Could turn it into a contest too, if you want, loser buys lunch?" he offered with a shrug as they headed towards the house's interior, unconcerned if the other Genin accepted or declined since it was only meant to encourage them to finish the task even quicker than they would have normally. With paintbrush and bucket in hand the redhead would head upstairs to begin his painting, regardless of whether or not his challenge was accepted.

The sooner they started the sooner they finished after all.

The introduction of a wager brought a raised brow from Souran in response, he hadn't thought about these menial tasks as a game before but if there was a chance to make this stuff at least a little more interesting it at least had to be considered, right? "Sure why not, I never turn down free food." The genin replied with a slight smirk. Had this been training or an actual spar the competitive juices would have been flowing but even still there was a bit of a trickle to get him focused in on the task at hand.

With their tasks designated Souran would look to the living room area that laid devoid of color and upon popping open one of the paint cans saw that the 'homeowners' had chosen to go with some weird bluish green color. "Thank Kami I don't have to live here, this shit is ugly." The genin muttered to himself as he poured the paint into the rolling pain before picking up the large roller and getting to work on the walls. Large, vertical, even strokes were the name of the game to ensure that every inch of the wall received an even coating of paint, sometimes having to go over a section two or three times and while not heavy by any stretch of the imagination having to keep his arms raised for an extended amount of time made it feel like he was working out given the twinge of soreness coursing through them.

Still, the boy would push through as he now had a bet to win and a little bit of arm fatigue wasn't going to stop him from getting that free lunch. Rice, noodles, grilled meats, oooooo he could taste it already.

Taking his equipment upstairs to the room designated for him, Kaoru popped open the bucket quickly and poured the paint into the tray before deciding that he was going to do things a bit more dramatically just to amuse himself. With a slight flexing of his legs and a hop, he clambered up on the roof until he was upside down, paint roller dangling towards the ground before he began to slather it in paint. This was trickier than just painting normally, but it was far more entertaining, and better training to add to that.

The redhead deliberately over-soaked his roller too, making it so that excess paint would begin to slowly trail down the wall and thus provide more coverage for less effort as he started at the top and worked his way down. He'd done this sort of mission before, and it was pretty simple to fall back into the flow of such a thing, the only difference being he was working from the ceiling rather the floor, something which made the whole thing more interesting to him. Competition or not, just painting normally was dull.

Naturally, he made sure to do a good enough job that the client wouldn't be annoyed with him, but he wasn't holding back on the speed either as he tried to finish as quickly as possible. He didn't much care about winning or losing, but he definitely cared about giving it his all and getting out of here as soon as was possible.

Souran rolled and rolled away at the walls coating just about everything in sight in the odd colored paint. The repitition of giving the walls a twice over then going back to the pan normally would have gotten old but seeing a bit more of the barren wall come to life was oddly satisfying. It wasn't something he wanted to make a habit of doing by any stretch of the imagination and truth be told one of the reasons he wanted to hurry up and promote to chunin was so he could avoid being called upon to participate in remedial tasks like these that the village still liked to label as 'missions'.

While taking a small break to look over his work the boy noticed that while a majority of the wall had been successfully covered in paints the very top and bottom edges where the wall met with the ceiling and floor respectively was still devoid of color, the large roller too big to hit such a precise angle. "Well shit." The Netsu sneered as he looked at the tools next to the pan of paint and noticed the smaller paint brushes. He wouldn't be able to get large swathes of the wall painted in one fell swoop like before but it'd get the job done eventually, though it was sure to cost him valuable time in the bet he had with Kaoru. No matter, it had to be done if they wanted to meet the requirements of the mission and how could the genin ever be considered for higher priority tasks if he couldn't even paint a wall correctly?

Taking a nearby ladder Souran would begin working on painting the tippy top section of the wall, a simple task in its own right but definitely annoying when he had to get down the move the ladder over every few feet. He figured this would be the most tedious part as when it came to the bottom of the wall just walking along the edge would probably suffice, but he'd cross that bridge when he got to it.

Once finished, Kaoru dropped to the ground and stood back, examining his work carefully for anything that might get him called out on a rush job. He wiped the sweat from his brow with the back of his hand, smearing a bit of paint in the process, but he didn’t mind, because at least he was finally done with the damn thing.

He carefully placed the roller into the tray, making sure not to drip any paint on the newly finished floor. Every stroke, every careful application, had been a step towards getting everything done as quickly as he possibly could, his every movement aimed solely towards that goal. His skills came from a simple thing, the fact that he had needed to do this kind of mission more often than he would care to remember. He couldn't help that the shinobi at the mission desk disliked him enough to keep assigning him the crappy jobs.

He looked around, taking in the even coats on the walls and the clean lines where the walls met the white ceiling. The scent of fresh paint lingered in the air, mingling with the faint scent of pine from the open window.  Kaoru picked up a damp cloth and began wiping down the window sills and baseboards, removing any stray splatters of paint. He took care in each motion, ensuring everything was perfect. 

He stepped back once more, taking a final look at the room. It was finished, thank whatever kami was listening. Turning on his heel he headed downstairs to see if his partner for the mission was done or not. Had to see who it was that was getting to eat for free after all!

Souran had underestimated just how much time it would take to get the top and bottom portions of the wall painted correctly. Sure, he could have slapped some paint on there and kept it moving because honestly who was even going to look at the top of a wall, and chances were the bottom would be covered by furniture or other decoration, but what had truly caused him the most trouble was trying not to get paint on wall borders which were a completely different color and any splotches of turquoise would have shown without issue. Slow going was the name of the game as the genin had to make sure that he didn't oversaturate his paint brush and that his brush strokes were just enough to transfer enough paint to cover the wall but not too much that they would drip; it was a lot more delicate work than he ever would have guessed.

As the Netsu worked to finish up the bottom corners of the wall he could hear footsteps coming down the stairs which signaled that Kaoru was most likely on his way. Did he not have the same problems when it came to painting his assigned rooms? Did he have some weird skill in arts and crafts that made him more suited for such a task and already knowing he was going to win the bet before it even started? That son of a.. Souran thought to himself as he lathered the last few bits of paint on the wall.

As he deposited the brush back into the pan his focus turned to the other genin who indeed had bested him in this friendly time trial. "Damn, well guess I'm paying today. Let's go find the old dude so we can tell him we're done, this paint is giving me a headache." It wouldn't take long to find the foreman and after a brief inspection of each of the genin's rooms he let the pair know that their work had been satisfactory and they were free to go.

"Paint enough rooms and you get half decent at them," he said with a shrug, waiting for Souran to finish up before heading towards the foreman, "if you'd like, we could always just pay for each other," the rehead chuckled, wanting to take some of the sting out of the competition. After all, he hadn't cared one bit for winning or losing. Regardless of what the other said, they'd soon find the foreman to report their completion of the task. The older man would quickly check their work before dismissing them both with a wave and a signed work order to show that they had completed their mission.

"Well, it was kinda dull, but not too bad considering how quickly we got through it~" Kaoru remarked as they left the job site, hands casually behind his head, "so, where would you like to eat?"

It cost him nothing to be nice after all, he didn't care about what he ate much, so long as there was enough of it, and he figured it was good to get on the good side of a number of people to maybe offseat whatever curse he had that kept giving him such dull missions.
