[attr="class","butt-box2"]Kokoro was the closest thing that Chitoku had found to a home since his village was destroyed years ago. Nestled in his homeland in Na no Kuni, near the borders to Moku. The resources of the forest attracted growth to the town, which had in turn drawn the attention of bandits in the forest. The problem had been made apparent in the impressive wooden walls that stood five men tall that encircled the town and the archers that walked on platforms around it with watchful eyes.

The town was built around a central salt mine, homes rising upwards on a winding hill path towards the manor of the lord that ruled over it. One would not find farms here, but dozens of openings into the hillside that were either being actively mined or converted into storehouses. Many farmers in Na no Kuni came to Kokoro to trade food for salt, lumber, and the comforts of civilization.

Still, the beacon of civilization that it was, compared to the cities found in other countries it was relatively small and most of the wealth belonged to those who established the town. Most of the workers were happy enough to have their basic necessities covered while they worked the mines and lumber yards.

Chitoku had found occasional work treating the ailments of the commoners. He wasn’t quite skilled enough to serve the nobility, but cheap enough at least that the people of the town could afford his services in dire straits. He’d taken a break from the farm to visit the town, setting up a small booth near the double-wide gates. To his flank was a stable full of horses and an inn that was slowly starting to empty of its patrons as the morning sun rose into the overcast sky.

The makeshift wooden stand hadn’t attracted any customers yet. In the past his physiology had gotten him some attention, but the novelty of his numerous eyes had passed for most of the locals by now.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Chōmoku
From a young age Chitoku was implanted with preserved eyes of deceased clansmen all over his body. Coverage includes both his arms (5 on each arm), torso (9 eyes), and back (7 eyes) effectively granting him a 360 degree field of vision when his chest is uncovered and a plethora of eyes to use as visual triggers for certain genjutsu. When all but his arms are covered there are small pockets of the field which only fall into his peripheral vision.

This gift comes at a price, as he is more susceptible to seeing visual triggers himself or having the soft tissues of the eye damaged. In case of being blinded, covered eyes can be uncovered to provide sight as well, although the more eyes that are blinded or damaged the less coverage he has with line of sight.

Homicidal Medicine
Versed in traditional medicine including surgery, Chitoku can provide conventional first aid treatments to the wounded and practice medicine in general. Knowledge of the human body also grant him insights on vulnerable parts of anatomy and a deeper understanding of pain as well.

Exceptional Chakra Control
Compared to most shinobi of his grade, Chitoku's chakra control is exceptional. He is able to conserve a good deal of energy with his jutsu usage which allows him in turn to use more jutsu over time. His control is precise enough to channel complicated illusions and medical chakra as well.

on his lone summit

The irregular clack of straw zori on an unpaved trail echoed as a figure made his way along it, breathing more heavily with each struggled step. Long, dark hair hung over his face, damp with sweat and blood not all his own.

A shadow was cast over the upper half of his face, though narrowed eyes peered out from behind his locks to meet each worried stare cast his way. They looked almost panicked, like a cornered animal's that was on the verge of lashing out at the first thing that drew near. Though the sweat that dripped down his face spoke to a likely fever.

Like his hair, his clothes and face were stained as well in multiple spots. Mostly-dried claret was spattered across his cheek, on his haori, yukata, and hakama. A large red blot near his left hip looked indicative of a nasty stab wound, and the constant dripping trail he left in his wake did not bode well for his chances for survival. The figure had been putting pressure on the injury with his left hand, but it was not enough. His right, still bandaged from some previous injury was wrapped firmly around the hilt of an ornate kodachi that for the meantime remained in its saya.

He was hurt badly, moving as slowly as he was painfully, and worse yet— he was barely on the verge of consciousness. "Move, you fool..." he told himself as he trudged along, unable to stop himself from wincing. "If you die here..." A shake of his head followed. "If... you die..." Try as he might, he could not even form a complete thought.

Pain wracked his head, his vision was blurry, and his legs would not support his weight for much longer. Someone called out to him only for their words to fall on deaf ears, though he did note their pointing towards a nearby wooden stand. In his current state, it did not matter who this person was. All he could hope was that they could find him help. By some miracle he evaded capture... but if he did not get treatment immediately, he would be dead.

Just before the wooden stall to stare at its operator, all but wheezing as he did. "...eyes?" A thought occurred as he looked to the young man, his strange visage surely a product of some kind of hallucination. "Too many..." He tried to speak but no words came. "Yō... kai..." he mumbled, incoherently. "Hel—" A half-plea, or perhaps a demand.

The bloodied figure moved to steady himself with his left hand, but collapsed, crumpling unceremoniously onto the ground with a dull, heavy thud. It would be clear from a cursory look that his kidney had been pierced. He was dying.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]The Dodomeki had been absorbed in the pages of a medical digest when he overheard the murmuring of a stranger. His immediate reaction was to bark back that he was no monster, as he’d had his fill of such commonplace reactions to his presence years ago. When he focused on the stranger they toppled over and his annoyance was replaced with curiosity.

Chitoku’s eyes scanned the fallen man with curiosity. Still breathing. Stab wound, probable ruptured kidney. He approached, first lightly grasping the man’s shoulder and giving him a light shake.

"Hey, um… do you have money to pay for treatment?”

No intelligible response. One of the Dodomeki’s eyes rested on the blade the man carried. It should be enough to cover the bill if the man had no other assets. Shrugging, he hoisted the man up with the assistance of a concerned villager and unceremoniously plopped him on to the counter of his stall. He removed the blade and sat it out of arm’s reach, just in case the patient woke up and got feisty.

With little time to waste, Chitoku unfurled a scroll and unsealed a medical kit. Inside were scalpels, bandages, stents, and antiseptic. Accompanying the items was an empty bottle of painkillers that had been compounded years ago, a luxury he couldn’t afford for his patients.

Thinking back to his mother’s teachings, Chitoku frowned. He didn’t have all of the equipment to do this right, and he never completed his learning of Shousen Jutsu. He’d have to do conventional surgery. It was risky given the amount of blood the man had already lost, but it was his best bet at this point unless some miracle worker strolled into town.

"Hopefully, your other kidney is in good condition,” he muttered as he lifted a scalpel. He’d have to do open surgery on the wound, so he would first cut a little more flesh around it so that he could get a better look at the injury and clean up the excess blood.

The pain alone might be enough to shock the man back to consciousness, especially as antiseptic he applied near the wound crept inside giving a burning sensation.

the oni king drinks deeply

Sweat, pain, chills, a warm feeling spreading down the left side of his abdomen, and a dull murmuring in his ears.

Though he felt himself being shaken, he could not make out the words being said. "Mon... ey?" The wanderer thought he caught, but could only mumble gibberish in reply. Someone grabbed his weapon, and darkness came.

A black, inky void interspersed by bright flashes of light. On the outside his eyelids were fluttering every so often through no choice of his own. And as he lied there and bled, his fevered mind turned to the events that led him here. Miyamoto-mura in Himeji-han, his family's old forge, a freshly-stained book he carried tucked into his obi...

...and the blood. Warm as it spattered across his cheek, bits of bone and other things contained within a human's head. Some of it wound up tangled in his hair at the time, but he did not have the time to wash it out or even check if it was still there. A squad of armored 'warriors' thinking they would win themselves and their family renown by killing the Harima no Ōkami in the name of the bakufu. Mostly young men, boys really, all believing they might succeed where even a hitokiri had failed in the past. More than likely unblooded, or if they had ever been, it was only on peasants wielding farming tools. Brandishing those katana of theirs, wearing brave faces as they advanced.

Idiots, all of them. Just a few days ago they were alive, hale and whole, but now... "...dust." Images of a hulking pale ogre ripped through his head, screaming and tearing into anything that moved. He recalled expressions of fear, confusion, desperation, and indeed even courage in the face of such a foe. Though it did little to stop what came.

Two pairs of hands helped him up, and even teetering on the edge of lucidity the wanderer still managed to groan quietly in pain. Soon he was lying on something other than dirt, and the sudden shift was more than a little discomforting. His haori was moved aside, then his yukata, and a closer look would reveal several things sbout the bloodied wanderer. A wing tattoo on his collarbone, dual wolves on his left arm, a multi-headed serpent on his right, a lily pad on his shoulder blade, a crescent moon behind his left ear, and a spoked wheel on the nape of his neck. Moreover, his body was riddled with scars from battles past. A burn on his right palm extending halfway up his fingers, a slash that stretched from the bottom of his ribs to his right hip, an old stab wound near his heart, and of course the two obvious ones on his face. He felt the familiar sensation of metal against his skin, and reflexively his eyes snapped open, the wanderer's left hand flashing outwards in a dizzied attempt to grasp at the doctor's collar. "Do not—" he snapped, his right hand moving to his weapon at his hip. But he found no kodachi's hilt there.

In the haze of his mind he could not fully parse what was happening, but when the antiseptic touched his wound, he grit his teeth and his grip, if he managed to secure one, faltered. Back down he went, catching something about a kidney as a sharp, burning pain shot through his midsection. "Can... not..." He took a ragged breath, then looked to one of the man's many eyes. "...die." It was nonsense, sounding more like he was trying to bargain with himself.

Hopefully the man would be able to staunch the bleeding and close the wound... but regardless, he was in for one painful experience. Either through his own struggling against his assured exsanguination, or in the convalescence that could follow treatment. He had been cut, burned, shocked, and beaten before, but this was worse by far.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Jerking his neck back to avoid being grabbed, he looked at the man through his original spectacled eyes.

"I must, if you want to live.”

Chitoku listened to the man’s mutterings. The will to live was strong, and he imagined if it wasn’t then they’d be dead by now. While he worked one of his spare eyes fell onto a tome tucked into the man’s clothing while another studied the art that covered his body. Oftentimes, criminals had tattoos, although these days that wasn’t necessarily the case. Still, his imagination was running wild with ideas about the life of the wounded. Criminals usually had money, although getting them to pay their debts could prove challenging.

"Don’t worry, I won’t let you die,” he promised. It wasn’t one he was sure that he could keep, but one could delay the opening of death’s door longer if they pressed against it defiantly. "You’ll have to refer me to your tattoo artist after though.”

With the wound now open, he took clean rags and started cleaning up the blood. More continued to trickle out of course, but decreasing the volume let him find the artery nearest the rupture. Using a surgical tool he pinched the artery off and began working to repair the ruptured kidney. Pain receptors around the kidney would feel tugging, stretching, and stitching as he grafted flesh he’d cut from around the wound over the damaged kidney.

Sourcing the man’s skin for the graft was his only option. He could use ninjutsu to repair skin, but not the tissue of organs. Unfortunately the first patch of skin he’d taken was slightly too small, so he had to carve more off and then sewed it tightly on one side to make a little henge. Afterwards he retrieved the tool pinching the man’s artery off and let it free while hastily finishing the stitchings to close up the patchwork. Undoubtedly, he’d need to get follow up treatment at a hospital who could install a synthetic graft, but this would do for now.

There was more to do, although the rupture was repaired the man’s tissue was still cut open and exposed. More needlework would follow until he got the flesh as close together as he could. Then a white orb began to form in his hand. This jutsu wasn’t intended to be used in the field, it was a training jutsu that his mother was using to teach him shousen jutsu. She’d died before he finished his learning.

Still, he found that it worked well enough with a little stitching to correct imperfections. It was painful for the patient and took a long time though.

"Hold onto the pain, feeling it means you are still alive!” he told the man as he hovered over the cut that was slowly starting to crust over as panicked platelets rushed to the source of the pain.

NAME: I-Gikou [Healing Technique]
RANK: B
CHAKRA USAGE: To Use: Low | To Maintain: Low
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu [Medical]
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
REQUIREMENT: Chakra Control SA
DESCRIPTION:
A training technique that comes before mystical palm, this healing jutsu allows for the user to gather their chakra into a small white orb and move it over injured areas in order to somewhat speed up the regeneration of wounds. However, this jutsu can only heal flesh wounds and bring muscles together. It cannot heal severe wounds. At best, using this technique would allow for someone to heal a deep cut. Due to the nature of the technique, using it can be painful to the person being healed.

a sanguine liqueur

Unsurprisingly, his reflexes were sluggish and he was not able to grab hold of the man. It was probably for the best as the man was in fact helping, but the wanderer was unable to discern friend from foe in his current deluded state.

Making sure that his kodachi was out of reach was certainly a smart move on the doctor's part. "Ah!" A pained hiss came as the scalpel opened him up, the sting of the antiseptic only adding to his agony. "Dying..." he thought, helpless to stop what was surely life-saving treatment. "I am... dying." Shock made him almost wholly unintelligible.

Not only could he barely understand what was being said, but his replies by way of groans and scattered mumbling did little to forward any conversation the doctor was trying to have. "Tattoo?" There came an assurance that he would not die, and all he said was, "...yet." Perhaps some sort of insight into his feelings on the matter, or just fevered muttering. "Kota..." he said, trying in vain to focus his blurry vision on the man. "My... son..." A half-spoken plea. "For... his sake... I must—" As soon as the medic began to dig around in his wound was when the pain became too great. He spasmed once, gritting his teeth in an attempt to stifle a shout as a wave of nausea passed over him...

Then, he passed out cold. Leaving the medic to his work, unable to protest or provide any more commentary. What followed seemed like some sort of nightmare, hazy images of some creature with one hundred eyes looming overtop of him, scavenging like carrion. Aggravating his wound, slicing into him over and over with some crude knife, picking him apart. Seconds became minutes, and in reality, the doctor was plying his trade rather deftly. The worst of the damage was stitched up with some needlework, and then a skin graft applied to the area to make the puncture wound a bit less... grotesque. Of course the lack of pain killers or any numbing agent made the whole process agonizing, but he was already unconscious so there were no further objections from him at present. For operating on a stranger on a wooden stall in the open air, he was doing well. A jutsu was applied afterwards, and the wound began to scab over as if the healing had been accelerated several days. Quiet ensued for a long time after.

Until finally, after some unknowable amount of time, the void receded and his eyes opened. "..." Silence as the wanderer's vision focused itself. The first thing he tried to do was move, but a gut-wrenching pain halted any attempt before it truly got started. He glanced around, spotting the doctor and his many, many eyes. "The yōkai..." a trailed thought began, his expression unmoving save for the occasional wince. "...is this my fate? Him, some gatekeeper?"

From his prone position, he could not grasp his surroundings. The fact that his head was pounding did not help matters. "Am..." he started, his voice a rasp. His throat felt dry and could barely muster the words. "...am I dead?"

The Dodomeki was quietly sipping from a clay cup steaming with hot tea that rejuvenated him from his hard day of work. He hadn’t eaten, but could never muster an appetite after surgery, even after all this time.

"No, you’re not dead,” Chitoku said to the man as he came to in the late evening. "I stopped the bleeding and repaired the rupture, but the graft I used on your kidney was far from ideal.”

Pausing for a moment, he pulled out a small notepad and flipped past several pages detailing notes of his travels to various lands. He took a pen to hand.

"While you are with me, you mentioned a son,” he began. "I plan to transport you to a hospital in Tori no Kuni in the morning where they will (hopefully) be able to give you a more permanent repair to your kidney. But… in case you pass out again, is there someone caring for your son now? Someone I should inform of your whereabouts?”

…someone to take over care if he passed away. Chitoku didn’t have the resources to care for a child, or the temperament. He’d at least take him to an orphanage though should the need arise.

blood, mine and others'

No, he was not dead. Yet no hint of relief showed in his expression, no small nod of understanding, not even a grunt of acknowledgement in reply. Just those same tired, brown eyes staring at the doctor. "...not yet." He thought.

Another death blow that had not quite found its mark, which ultimately meant that he was free to continue down his path of violence. The doctor delivered his diagnosis and as he listened he allowed his gaze to drift upwards, contemplating the man's words. "A ruptured kidney..." he repeated to himself. "If worst comes to worst, I have another."

Himeji-han in Tetsu no Kuni was no mere brisk walk away from... wherever he currently was. He still did not fully have his bearings and he did not recall which direction he began to walk after the skirmish. "South, perhaps." North would have taken him further into hostile territory, west was the sea, and to the east lied Tsuchi no Kuni where he once killed a man. It left only one direction, but how far he journeyed or how long it took he could not say. "..."

'Son' the doctor recounted his own alleged words, a bit of confusion creeping into his upward gaze as the wanderer trying and failing to remember what he said. "Did... I truly call him that?" In a sense, it was not exactly wrong. He was more paternal towards the boy than brotherly, and deep down, perhaps he knew this to always be the case... though he never once referred to him as that aloud. "My ward," he muttered in reply, his voice still a rasp. A plan was spoken of to transport him to a proper hospital and already he could feel his body tense up. The man posed him a question about the child, and he could only shake his head. "He is... safe. Still awaiting my return." He said, thinking back to where they last broke camp. Before his most recent trek back home, they sought refuge in Nohara no Kuni, and barring some unforeseen catastrophe, he would still be there. When asked if someone was looking after the boy, the wanderer could only shake his head again. "I am all he has..." The same was true for him.

It had been nearly a decade since he last saw his mother and siblings, and to his knowledge they were still across the sea in Sake no Kuni. For all intents and purposes, Kota was family. "Doctor..." he began, glancing to the man and his many eyes. "...I cannot go to a hospital." Suddenly he sounded grave, even in his weakened state. A grim implication hiding just beneath the surface of his scratchy words. "I should not even be here, now." Once before he had come face-to-face with a hitokiri, only barely managing to escape with his life with the help of another, and still gaining a scar through his brow for his trouble. After what he did this time around... he would be hunted, for certain. Convalescing in some infirmary bed would only make him an easier target. "You have no reason to allow me... and I am in no position to bargain, but—" A pause as he winced, the desire to clutch at his wound grew but he did not even have the strength for that. "If I can rest here for a time... I will be on my way as soon as I am able." Days, a week, he did not know how long it might take though he did not need to fully recover before.

As long as he could stand without toppling over... that was all he required. "I will manage, somehow." His body was wracked with pain, and the dizziness from his blood loss made it difficult to think clearly. Unable to move and incapable of formulating a better plan at present, all he could do was lie there, in pain, and wait silently for a reply. "It seems I was not wholly wrong," he thought, staring at the man's many eyes. "I am not dead... but he is still the decider."

Skin isn’t really the best material for that sort of repair, but it is all I had,” he explained. Pausing for a moment he looked back at the blade, and turned a few pupils towards the man that widened and then squinted.

"Of course, if you’ll be out here in the west for a while, maybe we could work something out. I can keep you posted on my whereabouts and do occasional maintenance to keep the patchwork healthy.”

Pausing for a moment, he reached into an inner pocket tucked into his nagagi, which was kept loosely opened revealing bandages that concealed even more eyes. From the pocket he pulled a small silver flask, popped the lid off, and took a swig.

"Of course, I’d need some sort of compensation to be on call like that,” he said. "Not to mention we haven’t even spoken about how you plan to pay me for getting you this far and providing you care for the next few days. You’ve got the look of a warrior about you, so perhaps you could lend your sword to a few of my endeavors in exchange?”

His control is precise enough to channel complicated illusions and medical chakra as well.

makes for stains that will not fade

Being scolded by a medical professional was not quite his favorite thing in the world, but the man was absolutely right. More than that, he was completely at the doctor's mercy in his current state. "...it is a risk I must take."

The wanderer's throat was still dry, and his voice was little more than a weak rasp. A chance of death was not ideal, but checking into some public hospital would ensure his demise. Wherever he went the shōgun's blades would hound him from now on, and if he were convalescing in the open it would not take long for them to find him.

At least here he would have a chance at hiding until he recovered his strength. The doctor did not seem to like the idea of him staying, but he offered an alternative all the same. "I do not expect I will be going anywhere, anytime soon..." He said, wincing as a jolt of pain shot through his midsection. Like this, he could not even walk let alone make out for Nohara no Kuni. For the meantime he was on his own... and he had to trust that Kota's training would keep the boy safe while he was away. Talk of payment prompted a side eye from him, but he could not exactly argue. A debt was owed, and he disliked outstanding favors hanging over his head. "..." He was quiet.

Doing his best to listen through the aching haze that clouded his mind as the man spoke of coming to some sort of arrangement. He glanced to his kodachi, resting to the side and thought for a moment about offering it up as recompense. "If only I did not have need of you," he thought. "But that is not the case." A Masamune-forged blade would surely cover his treatment and then some. It was small, but expertly crafted with precious metals. Only...

....he had other plans for the short blade. "Warrior? A bushi..." he echoed the man's assessment in his mind, and if he were the laughing sort, he might have. "If so, I must be the sorriest excuse for one that has ever been." For a brief moment, he thought of his sensei, Hanagisa. How she might balk and reprimand him for his own recklessness at allowing himself to end up like this. And when the idea of him selling his sword was broached, he paused. "There was a time... where even the suggestion of such a thing would make me turn my nose up." A common sellsword, a rogue for hire, a rōnin. In his homeland, there were certainly lower classes to belong to, but not many. But now, after all he had seen and done, forgoing his own sense of honor, committing heinous acts against the bakufu... "Seeing as I have little choice... until my debt is cleared, my sword is yours." He replied, turning his gaze skyward as he considered his actions.

He was already a criminal, a thief, and a vagabond. In the past he had taken jobs for Kumogakure no Sato, and tangential ones that assisted Iwagakure. He could not afford to be above mercenary work. And aside from all of that... he was no samurai, anyway. "What is one more job?" The wanderer grew quieter still as he thought of past days.

Memories of his father and grandfather trickling in and out of his fuzzy consciousness, the knowledge he gained from that old journal adding context to many old rows the two used to have. Soon, he would need to reckon with it.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]"Good,” Chitoku said. "In the meanwhile I will try to get access to a proper synthetic graft to fix you up more permanently, but it’ll probably take a little time. I won’t lie to you, you’d be better off marching for the gates of one of the hidden villages and begging for treatment. I never completed my training in iryo ninjutsu and mostly rely on conventional techniques, but if you are really determined to keep going without then I’ll do my best.”

He reached for and handed yoshitake back to the man. Eyes carefully watching, ready to cast a genjutsu at a moment's notice, although he didn’t really think the man would try anything given the circumstances. Still, it was better to be safe than sorry.

"I won’t ask about your business,” he said. "But if there is anywhere or anyone we should avoid when we work together, please speak up. I don’t want to end up in whatever mess landed you here. So make sure not to lead any of the friends who gave you these wounds back my way.”

Although Ayane and himself had some experience in the world, Chitoku was well aware that they were small fish in a big pond. Despite her wanting to save every frog or kitten they came across, he knew sticking his nose into places that they didn’t belong could quickly lead to an untimely demise.

They were obviously in pain, and although he tried to play himself off as aloof he didn’t like to see people suffer. He looked at his pale clay wine bottle carved with the Dodomeki clan logo on it and painted with red ink. The selfish part of him cursed the idea that came to mind.

"I don’t really have anything for pain, save a bit of sake. A few sips might help to lighten your burden temporarily.”

He slid the bottle towards him in offering.

no matter how long

The wanderer said little, merely listening from his prone position on the stall's counter. "Kumogakure, perhaps," he thought, recalling the better-than-average treatment he received there as compared to other villages. "Still..."

Hidden Villages, despite their secretive nature, were still too public for his purposes now. If he were able to gain entry to the village, he had no doubt that a man like Oda no Koshige could as well. And if they met again, he doubted the encounter would end only with a scar across his eye. "...thank you." He grunted in reply to the man.

Before long his kodachi was handed back to him, and the young man reached a weak hand out to accept it, and then hold near to his chest. The doctor's assessment was correct in that he would not try anything— or rather, he could not even if he wanted to. If it were not for his efforts he would surely be a corpse by now. And despite any haggling over cost, this abject stranger had paid him a kindness of a nature that was more than most would even think of.

Such was the way of those who were forced to wander, and if his mind were not otherwise occupied, he might have even been inclined to express his gratitude. A nod came as the man told him he would not ask of his circumstances, and on the inside, he thanked him again. Another rarity, in a world full of paranoia, suspicion, and overall hostility.

Any reservations he did have were more than justified, and since it seemed like they would be forced to become further acquainted in the days to come, he spoke true. "Tetsu no Kuni..." he replied quietly. "...be wary of anyone who wears the daishō." Samurai were his foe, and not just the errant ones he had come across in his travels up until this point. He had spilled Minamoto blood, and the bakufu would not take such an act lying down. If the murders of some lowly retainers and one Masamune rōnin were enough for them to sic a hitokiri on him, his recent slayings would see them redouble their efforts. "Samurai are poor trackers... but they are relentless."

Fearsome in direct conflict, and far too stubborn to give up when they otherwise should. It was all he had to say about the matter at present. An offer of sake was given, and the wanderer stared at the earthen bottle for just a moment. "It could not hurt," he thought, then nodded, leaving his kodachi to rest on his chest as he reached for it.

A jolt of pain ripped through his abdomen, a byproduct of the surgery, and the wanderer winced before taking shaky hold of the jug. He glanced at his aching wound, then to the doctor, his brow furrowing ever so slightly. "...how long have you practiced medicine?" The question verged on an accusation, but stopped just short.

Last time his wounds were tended, his "doctor" was a half-mad zealot. He could only hope this painful, patchwork treatment was not as deliberate as that. He tilted his head as best he could, and drank, sake trickling down his chin.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]"Ahh, samurai,” Chitoku said. "Usually they don’t have a lot of business for me, they aren’t usually fond of mercenaries. So it shouldn’t be a problem as long as we avoid Tetsu and keep moving.”

He wondered what the man might have done, but wouldn’t ask. Chitoku didn’t consider himself a criminal, but didn’t exactly care much for the laws of the more sophisticated lands either.

"Well, my mother taught me as a boy,” he said. "After she passed, my learning got much slower and a lot more trial and error. It can be hard to get supplies, or to make them last. A lot of folks out here need help, and my companion is soft hearted.”

A partial truth. Even though Ayane was more vocal, he often had the same feelings and used her requests as an excuse to do good deeds. Not a total philanthropist though, because they needed money to survive.

But um, you are sure you gave them the slip right? Do I need to try to hide you tonight?”

Perhaps it was naive, but he didn’t think of samurai as those who traveled in the night. They were a prouder bunch than shinobi who often saw honor in standing outside of the shadows. Hopefully, they’d at least have until morning.

a bargain is struck

A burning sensation traveled down the back of his throat curtesy of the sake, and this time when he winced, it was not just due to the pain. The liquid was cool enough, but rice wine tingled no matter the temperature. "Ugh..."

It had been some time since he had a drink, but he did not recall sake tasting quite so bad in the past. "What was it that old lush always used to say?" He thought, recalling his mentor in the shinobi arts. The man was a former Taki-nin and a drunkard through and through. "'No one drinks for the taste'..." The wanderer did not know what was worse...

...the sting of the alcohol or the fact that he found himself agreeing with the fool for once. "They are not fond of a great many people..." He muttered in response, taking another long swig from the bottle. Afterwards he coughed a bit, and handed the sake back to its owner. Hopefully a few drinks were enough to dull the pain for at least several hours. Upon hearing the man's explanation, his mouth opened to respond with some sort of irate quip, but the mention of a dead mother stopped him. "..." He lie there silently, his side still paining him greatly. As bad as his mood was, even he still possessed a bit of tact. "More error than trial, from how it feels..." The wanderer thought.

Having to stifle a groan as he readjusted himself on the hard surface he was placed upon. Still, he had no real right to complain. Without the man's aid he would surely be dead by now, and other matters occupied his mind that outweighed any typical snark he tended to provide. The doctor spoke of a kinder companion and his difficulties in plying his trade, and if he were in his right mind or not lying half-dead on a table, he might have even sympathized.

"It is difficult to make a living near anywhere you go," was all he thought to himself of the doctor's words. A question regarding his enemies was posed next, and after a long silence the wanderer could hardly even manage a weak shrug in reply. "Truly, I... do not know," he began. "Normally, I have little trouble evading such pursuers, but..." his words trailed as he turned his head to look at the road. A thin path of blood was still present, drying upon the dirt in the sunlight. He returned his gaze to skyward and shook his head. "...I do not even recall how I made it here." In his mind, there were flashes of a great, violent fight, a cold piercing of his midsection, the surrendering of his grandfather's sword to that Ishikawa boy, and then... "A haze." Foggy memories of walking for kilometers on end, the feeling of his legs burning from the strain, the warmth of his own blood... but he did not even know what direction he moved in. "That hospital in Tori no Kuni that you mentioned... tells me we must be nearby. Are we in Moku no Kuni?" He asked in return, but shook his head after realizing any answer would not make a difference. They were too close, regardless. "It matters not, hiding is the safe move." The wanderer continued on, trying and failing to sit up before giving a wince and halting his efforts. "Most have little skill in tracking but they are no fools... and some have hunted me much further, and for longer in the past." The doctor's train of thought seemed to align with his own scattered one for a moment, and he suddenly found himself clutching the scabbard of his kodachi tighter. "If the bakufu dispatches one of its hitokiri..." That would truly be a worst case scenario.

All of the stodgy self-righteousness of a samurai combined with the training and years of experience of a seasoned killer. If he encountered one of them again in his current state, he was finished... along with whoever was unlucky enough to be nearby. "Help me up," he said to the man, that remaining shred of etiquette he had seeming to vanish in light of his realization of his own situation. "Anyplace will do... so long as it is out of sight." Comfort was all but a foreign concept to him, and it did not matter to him where he convalesced. If the doctor obliged, he would struggle to his feet with enormous effort and a pained expression, only to pause once he did and take a deep breath. His life was still in the man's hands, and understanding such, he spoke again. "...do you have a name?"

[attr="class","butt-box2"]"No, this is Na no Kuni. But you can see the border to Moku no Kuni from the walls,” Chitoku affirmed. The man’s haste at standing put him on edge, and though he wouldn’t have advised a patient to stand normally, he’d rather repair any damage that might cause later if the need arose. For all he knew these samurai would consider him an accomplice. "I doubt the locals here will protect you if they come, so I agree that we should hide.”

"I am Chitoku, and you?” he asked in a whisper. "We’ll hide out in the silo just up the hill.”

He pointed at the entryway to an old mine shaft carved into the hillside. The carts gathered outside of it lacked minerals, instead had scraps of leaves and vegetables leftover from being loaded inside for storage. Leaned against a stone, a bored looking teenage boy in a jerkin twiddled a yari.

"We have to go unseen, if we can,” he continued, pointing to the carts which blocked the guards line of vision. "I have a means to walk right by the guard myself, so I will try to distract him beforehand so you can make your way in.”

Walking up to the guard from the opposite flank to the carts, Chitoku waved a hand lazily. "Excuse me, I was asked to do a quick dental examination of the guards. Mind opening up for me?”

The boy looked confused. But stood up and walked closer to the Dodomeki. He opened his mouth and Chitoku stared into the peasant’s mouth and observed several missing teeth and one that looked very infected.

One of the eyes on his arms looked past the boy and watched for the man to make his move so that he could extend the examination as long as he needed to. Chitoku was worried about hiding in a more public area where they might get sold out for a bag of silver.

Meanwhile, there was a sound of a horn in the distance and a lot of the townsfolk began watching the main gate. Chitoku’s guard tried to look that way, but the Dodomeki grabbed his tongue and kept him looking straight at him.

JUTSU/EQUIPMENT USED
None.
