[attr="class","butt-box2"]The plains of Tori no Kuni outside of a walled city had sprung to life with a myriad of tents and the sounds of plucking shamisen along the tradeway. Children ran around in yokai masks while adults drank under paper lanterns at the onset of twilight. Though night had fallen the air remained warm without so much as a breeze, allowing the smells of smoked pork to permeate the festival. Spared from the fires was Sukoshi-Kun, the fattest hog in an afternoon contest, and the sounds of an auctioneer rattling off contesting prices to take them home could be heard over the mutterings of the crowd.

Chitoku emerged from one of the tents, a saki bottle still in hand. He’d done surprisingly well in keeping himself together, unwilling to get as trashed as usual in the presence of so many travelers. Plus, he had a love of festival games, and he didn’t want to completely ruin his chances. He’d finally had enough to take the edge off.

Scanning around with a sea of eyes that darted through the crowds, he found a stand with a bunch of saki bottles stacked on them with a balding attendant with a bushy mustache leaned over the counter. At his side there were several stuffed animals. Most of them were birds because, well, Bird Country, but there was also a lion and a turtle. The sign on the stand read, "Knock Them All Down, Win a Prize.” It was kind of expensive, but he liked a challenge.

Realizing he’d stumbled out without Ayane, he poked his head back into the wine tent and looked for her. "Hey, you wanna throw stones at some bottles?”

When all but his arms are covered there are small pockets of the field which only fall into his peripheral vision.

This gift comes at a price, as he is more susceptible to seeing visual triggers himself or having the soft tissues of the eye damaged. Compared to most shinobi of his grade, Chitoku's chakra control is exceptional. He is able to conserve a good deal of energy with his jutsu usage which allows him in turn to use more jutsu over time. His control is precise enough to channel complicated illusions and medical chakra as well.

She hopped down from her stool at the bar and pushed through a group of young men. She stumbled a little as she passed a table and swiped a bottle of liquor. The people that were sitting nearby were too busy asking if she was ok to notice her shoving it up the flowy sleeve of her kimono. She apologized and assured the good Samaritan that she would be fine before hurrying out the tent and over to her friend.

She glanced over at a group of people fussing over an oversized hog. "That poor thing.” Ayane remarked to Chitoku as she caught up. "It just doesn't sit right to eat something that has a name, ya know?”

She eyed the mustached man at the booth and the bottles. "It shouldn’t be too hard to get the prize. You’re pretty good at skipping rocks.” Ayane slid the bottle into her bag before waltzing confidently towards the game. There was no line at the moment. She looked around before smiling innocently at the man, "Hmm… I guess we’ll take three stones each.” As he grabbed the stones from a little bucket she pointed out the turtle stuffie, "Look, he’s so cute.”

The two of them weren’t exactly responsible with their money, they’d had many hard times and the novelties of life kept them going. Seeing her happy again was something that the Dodomeki cherished, even though he didn’t express it out loud.

"Hmm, maybe we should see how much the pig is going for before we play. The auction will be over soon,” Chitoku said. Although he didn’t really care about the prize hog the way Ayane did, they could use it to hunt truffles and resell it in another land in a famine or something later once she grew tired of it. "We’ll come back for your turtle!”

Leading Ayane towards the sound of the auctioneer’s voice, eventually he got a full look at the massive oinker. Sukoshi-Kun stood on a raised platform munching on a potato with a glazed over look in his eye, a proud farmer in suspenders looming over him with a leash held tightly. They must have been at least six hundred pounds. He glanced at Ayane as he listened to the most recent bid, something within their reach but nearly an entire mission's worth of salary.

"Your call, raise your hand for the bid if you want,” he told her.

She could tell it was almost over because the pauses between the auctioneer’s words were slightly prolonged and he was glancing around for any more bids. Sukoshi-Kun’s snout twitched adorably as he finished his potato and sniffed around for another. He glanced at his owner with blissful ignorance to see if he would give him another treat. That poor innocent baby boy, Ayane thought. She could feel her heart in her chest, He’d been overfed, used to win a ribbon, and now would be discarded.”

Ayane was stunned how much the pig was going for but Chitoku had given his blessing. She grinned at him appreciatively and raised her hand. The smug expression dropped from the man’s face in front of her. He clearly thought he had this in the bag. He raised his paddle again and offered a smidge more. Ayane raised her hand and offered one more than he’d said. They went back and forth like this until the price was driven up beyond what she could reasonably say that they had. She lowered her hand and shook her head.

"Sold!” The man strode up to the stage and took hold of the leash. "You’ll make a fine meal!” He joked with a hearty chuckle. They moved off to the side to count out coins while the auction continued. Ayane kicked the dirt. "It just doesn't seem fair. He would have been so happy with us."

Chitoku watched as the bid grew higher and higher, to the point where he was nervous about the amount if they should win. When Ayane eventually relented, he felt a guilty relief, which was soon replaced by remorse as he listened to her disappointment. The person that won the bid was a portly man with a bowler hat on. One that the Dodomeki recognized.

"That’s the lord of the Masanobu farmstead in vegetable country,” he told Ayane. "I’ve heard they are looking for workers, so perhaps we haven’t seen the last of Sukoshi-Kun.”

Still, if they were going to rob such a notable figure it’d take a good deal of care, getting labeled as criminals invited all sorts of bad situations that they couldn’t deal with. He needed to help Ayane rebound from the situation so that her night wouldn’t be ruined.

"Anyways, let’s go try for that turtle.” he said. "I bet I can knock all the bottles down before you!”

Rushing away from the auction towards the bottle stand he shoved some money forward to the bald man, who grinned and slid six rubber balls across the table.

"Ladies first,” Chitoku said, placing his hands up above his waist to usher the kunoichi forward.

[attr="class","dahlia-box3"]Ayane acknowledged this new information with a slight nod. Maybe they could rescue the hog before he was butchered but not here surrounded by witnesses. She was comforted by this glimmer of hope, dim as it was.

It seemed like Chitoku still really wanted to play the bottle game and she didn’t want to seem like a killjoy. She followed him back to the stall with the mustached man and the six balls sitting on the counter.

She looked over at the six bottles lined up across the way. It shouldn’t be too hard if she knocked at least one bottle down with each ball. She picked one up, did a little wind up and flung it forward. It hit the back wall of the tent a couple feet too high to have ever had a chance of hitting a bottle.

"Oops… Well, I’m still getting warmed up.” She assured them sheepishly. That was pretty embarrassing but she shook out her arms and picked up another ball. This time it was a direct hit, the bottle teetered for a moment and it really could have gone either way, and it clattered onto the floor.

The next ball was aimed at the second bottle in the row but it seemed to bounce off harmlessly. She figured she must not have thrown it hard enough. At this point she’d already missed twice and her chances of winning a prize were slim to none.

The last three tosses did manage to knock over two more bottles but there were still three up when she was done. "Maybe you’ll have better luck.”

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Chitoku watched as Ayane made her attempts on the bottles, judging from her first hit they were made with heavy glass and seemed to be weighted on the bottom. On her last throw he saw that she hadn’t used enough force to knock the second bottle down. Curious, he lifted up his three and felt them. They seemed heavy enough, but he still gave the host a weary leer.

"Not to worry, I think I can still handle the rest,” he said, but taking out five bottles with three balls didn’t seem likely. Still, if he curved it at just the right angle and hit hard enough he could knock one into another.

Winding his arm up and pitching the ball with his tongue poking out from his lips, the sound of a grunt escaped him as he threw it in a downward motion towards the fifth bottle on the bottom left corner. The force of the throw connected and shot the bottle to the right, taking out the sixth.

"Woohoo!” he cheered. He noticed a lack of reaction from the balding man, who seemed more interested in some passing ladies in the crowd behind them.

Ayane had taken the first bottle, so Chitoku wound up to pull the same trick on bottle number two and three. Tossing towards the corner of the second one, it hit just the same but didn’t budge.

"Man, number two is hard,” he complained. "Well we aren’t going to win this round, but I might as well have a throw.”

This time he didn’t do anything fancy, just winging the final ball at the second bottle. But, being far from perfect, he whiffed and missed it completely.

"Damn,” he said. He pushed more coins onto the table, and the man smiled and handed them six more balls. He handed three back to Ayane. "Your turn!”

She bounced on her tippy toes and cheered loudly when he knocked over two at once. She groaned at the loss but brightened up when he bought them another round. "We’ll get it this time for sure!”

She figured her best chance of hitting something was just to aim for the center of the line. So, grinning happily, she picked up the first ball and pelted it hard at the third bottle in the line. The ball knocked the bottle backwards off the wooden board and bounced off to then strike the neck of the second bottle up near the top. The bottle didn’t budge though. "Frick! Did you see that? I was SO close.” Ayane pulled at her pigtails and made a dramatic face. "It just didn’t have enough force left behind it to get that second one.”

She tossed the second balls. This time focusing on the first and second bottles but she whiffed pretty bad. The third toss she managed to knock over the first bottle. She grimaced a little as she backed up to let Chitoku have another turn. "Sorry, I didn’t exactly set you up for success.”

All of his front facing eyes squinted at the second bottle, looking for signs of tomfoolery or crookedness. From what he could tell there wasn’t anything holding it up, it looked no different than the other bottles.

With his first two shots he took care of the remaining bottles using the same strategy as before to take down multiple bottles at a time, leaving number two for last.

Once again he winded his arm back, each eye focused intently on the target. Hurling the ball as hard as he could, it hit square dead center on its mass and made a thudding noise. Still, the bottle didn’t wobble or budge. His first instinct was to call the vendor out for cheating, but he decided it would be better not to draw the attention of the crowd.

Instead, he leaned over to Ayane and whispered into her ear. "Tug that bottle with your strings, I want to see if it will budge.”

Reaching into his pocket he pulled out more coin and placed it on the table. "I’ll go first this time,” he said. Throwing his first ball towards the second bottle, he’d rely on Ayane to subtly grasp it with her string to try to knock it out of place.

She was beginning to suspect that as well but she’d dismissed it as paranoia. Or maybe he wanted to tip the scales in their favor which she wasn’t opposed to either. Regardless, it wasn’t as easy as all that. The chakra strings of a puppeteer were not invisible. It usually took some staging to ensure they went unnoticed. A problem that she would have brought up if he’d waited a few seconds before enacting his plan.

Oh well, Ayane steeled herself, the show must go on. She bent down over to fix the strap of her sandal, hoping the man running the game would be distracted by her ass, while she built up chakra in her pinkie finger. With all the control she could muster she flicked a thin line of energy that connected to the glass bottle. She did her best to match her timing to Chitoku’s toss and it was pretty close. She tugged on the bottle just as the ball collided with it.

However, her finger jolted to a stop as if there were some sort of resistance. She’d felt a similar sensation while fishing on the docks in the land of tea. The only thing she could think to do in that split second was to jerk the string a little harder at which point she heard the shattering of glass. The string dissipated as she shot upright and glanced over at the broken bottle sitting with its base still firmly stuck in place. She gasped at this new development. People were stopping now and a small crowd of whispering spectators was beginning to form behind them.

Ayane used a jutsu to throw her voice into the crowd and started saying things like, "Why didn’t it move?” and "Wait a minute, is that bottle glued down?”

"Hey well, that counts right?” Chitoku said, raising an eyebrow at the man.

"Well, part of the bottle is still on the table and…” he stopped for a moment as the illusion took hold. He put his hands up in defeat, "But hey, it’s close enough! We have a winner folks! Which one do you want?”

Knowing that Ayane was fond of turtles, he pointed at the stuffed turtle. A green plush that was about three feet long. They’d probably need to pack it in a scroll to make it practical to keep. For the day though, she could carry it around and enjoy it.

Chitoku laughed into his hand as they walked away from the stall while the merchant started sweeping glass and cursing under his breath. Once they were out of his earshot, he turned towards her and spoke softly.

"That was decent practice with throwing,” he said to Ayane. "Trying to win a game really helped me focus and push myself there and I got a bunch knocked down at once. Looks like you got some practice with your skills too, yea?”

"I saw you knocking them down two at a time! If it’s practice you want, maybe we can scrounge up a few bottles around here so we can take this game on the road. I’ve already got one I lifted off a table in that tent a little while ago.” She shifted the bag at her side as if to clue him in on where the bottle was hidden at the moment. They could probably scavenge some empty bottles from around the festival but she’d rather find full bottles and sap them herself. Knowing Chitoku, he probably felt the same.

"I did pretty good. That guy had no idea what I was up to but honestly I was just having fun.” She glanced at her partner out of the corner of her eye. She wasn’t sure why but in her heart she felt a pang of disappointment that he was able to think of work at a moment like this. All she knew was that she needed to keep her tone as casual as possible. She couldn’t let him see her feelings had been hurt.

The Dodomeki’s eyes were reminiscent of the yokai in tall tales, so many common folk were afraid of crossing him. He wondered if that was the case here.

The Dodomeki gave Ayane a thumbs up, oblivious to her disappointment.

"I like the way you think, let’s find a new tent and get back to it then,” he replied.

With Ayane alongside him, Chitoku walked through the crowds and passed tent after tent of merchant stalls selling various nicknacks and oddities. Other stalls had entertainers, such as one with men and women dancing with flaming hoops and "breathing fire” by spewing oil from their mouths into embers.

From a large tent near the edge of camp, Chitoku spotted a bunch of barrels stacked near a back entrance. At the front there were slicks of vomit on the ground. Inside he could hear the sounds of boisterous laughter and merriment. A pot bellied man tumbled out of the front entrance and wobbled through the crowd stinking of wine.

"I think this should do,” he said, parting the door to the tent and stepping to the side to allow Ayane in first.

The air was thick with the scent of sweat, perfume, and the stale smell of spilled beer. The tent was dark, and the only light came from the glow of paper lanterns dangling from the rafters. Ayane could see people dancing in the shadows, their bodies moving in time to the music. The atmosphere was electric, and Ayane felt a surge of excitement as she made her way towards the bar.

She passed by a table where a group of people were engrossed in a card game. Their faces were illuminated by the flickering light of a single candle, and their expressions were intense as they studied their cards. Ayane paused for a moment to watch them, intrigued by the tension in the air. She peeked over one man’s shoulder and squinted at his hand. Just as he was about to call she shook her head, "I wouldn’t do that if I were you…”

Ayane continued off towards the bar, leaving the man looking dumbfounded as he second guessed his choice. She saw a couple of empty stools at the bar and sat down on one. She waited patiently for the bartender to notice their arrival.

The bartender was a paper thin woman with a leathery tan face and mostly gray hairs with little slivers of youth still hiding among them. Tired eyes with crows feet fell on the two as they sat down and she approached with a slight limp in her gait with each step of her left foot.

"What’ll it be?”

"Sake! Don’t want it warm please,” Chitoku chimed.

"You’ll want it warm,” she said.

"Ah, I see. Okay then,” Chitoku replied and gave a thumbs up. It was probably bad quality stuff, which meant it would be cheap. He didn’t really mind, as long as the price wasn’t outrageous.

They’d probably have to steal the bottles, since the courtesy was to leave the clay jugs behind so that they could be refilled later on. They weren’t meant to be used only once.

"I think that the festival will end in a few hours, then we’ll be back on the road again,” Chitoku said to Ayane. "I hope you had some fun?”
