Is your tongue sharper than your katana? For a budding blacksmith, there was one universal truth that could always keep the proverbial doors open and the money flowing. This truth was that wherever you went, people needed knives. All kinds of them. Gyuto, santoku, nakiri, peeling knives... If you could find a restaurant, you'd probably bet set on work for a while. And if you could find a path that shinobi often traveled, well - that would be even better work. Kitae didn't really like making knives. It was trivial work, mundane and boring, the exact kind of job that he'd wanted to run away from. But it wasn't like rich patrons were crawling out of every corner to commission him. He needed to eat, so he needed to do boring work every once in a while. That was how he ended up settling down for a while in a popular crossroads town, a place people would often stop for the night. It wasn't the sort of town you stayed in, just a midpoint on a destination, going to or coming back from a long trip, or a mission. It made it the ideal place to settle down by the road and set up shop. He had to get the fire going, get all his stuff set. Just making up a pop-up shop was something that could take him a few hours on its own, so by the time the sun was high in the sky, he'd just finished the work and already had a sweat on his brow from the effort and the heat of his now-sweltering flame. Kitae sat at his stall for a while, almost long enough that he would consider nodding off if someone wouldn't definitely, definitely make off with his shit while he was asleep. Finally, someone wandering by stopped to take a look, and unfortunately to chat. He looked around, like assessing her question, trying to figure out what the correct answer was. It seemed pretty obvious to him, so there had to be some reason she asked, right? But his eyes didn't fall on anything obvious, like a mysterious ghostly blacksmith currently tending the flame. His gaze slid back to the stranger, taking her in. Her clothes were a little dinged up, her cloak sewn back together in parts like it'd been worn down or sliced through or something. She had little scars, too. Probably shinobi, then, but not one from a fancy village. "No," he answered, flatly. "I've been stealing them off every shinobi who's walked by and none of them have killed me yet. I was gonna do it to you, too, but then you noticed me." He wasn't really interested in keeping up with that bit or being run out of town over it or anything, though, so he quickly added, "Of course I made them. Though his expression remained pretty impassive, he reached out to take it right away, turning it over in his hand to get a feel for all the damage. "Damn. What've you been doing to it? Trying to mine with it?" He asked. This thing must be old, or at least see a lot of use. He touched his finger to the edge of the blade and even pressed down a little, but didn't feel any danger of it breaking the skin or drawing blood, the edge blunted enough that it'd take considerable force to cut. Maybe these were originally farming tools and always had a more blunted edge? It's hard to imagine what these would get so worn down by. "I'm amazed you're still alive after running around with these. Either you've been avoiding fights or you're stronger than you look. I could sharpen them, but they're just going to fall apart. At this point melting them down and completely reforging them would be the best option..." He tapped on the metal with his finger. Definitely soft iron.
