NARA SHUN CHRONICLES
- t h e t a l e o f - O I W A I A S S I S T A N C E So many things had happened in just a span of a couple hours. It was hard to remember how relatively normal the day had been just 90 minutes ago. Shun couldn’t help but think that she was now, somehow, a completely different person than just those few moments ago.
”Do you believe in god, Taka-san?” she asked as she reached for Taka’s hand to hold and the two would stand facing the fresh grave. ”I don’t, I think… but I might be ignorant. I don’t know if this girl did either, but…” there was so much to say and so little to say. It was strange. Could a sentiment really ease a person’s demise? It must have been doing something right for people to practice it since the dawn of time.
Shun looked up at her older colleague. This was not about the two of them. Shinobi were merely tools. In their case, they had completed the mission. On paper it would be something to celebrate.
Her hand slightly squeezed his non-prostetic one and her lips shook slightly as she spoke. Big tears started to trail down her cheeks. "Let us weep for her, Taka-san! Someone has to. So that the skies know this was wrong. So the gods know this should not happen. Let’s weep for the life she could have had.” It was a plea and a prayer, a wish and a hope. Call it what one would but the sentiment remained.
And so the age old question: if a tree falls in a forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? The same could be asked of shinobi. Weep as they might, they were alone and were expected not to show their sorrow when they returned from the coverage of the forest. One might even say the forest was the most welcoming of all sounds and emotions.
Eventually, the duo would return to the town and report their progress. All that was left to do was go back home.
”I didn’t say this when we met because I thought it would make me seem too forward, Taka-senpai” Shun said as she walked next to him with another cup of Kisei coffee. The girl extended a kind smile: ”I’m really sorry about your arm and leg.”
