They had been told not to go too far away, and if they had then Yaki's reaction likely would have come off as far more hostile as she had caught sight of the two armored figures just about as soon as they had reached them. Stopping her half carved seal on the current tree to instead engage the new strangers. Strangers dressed in armor were rare, less so in common soldier attire versus armored leathers. Skidding to a stop in-between the two and her wards Yaki would huff.

Her glare was just as apparent now as it had been a moment before, though likely easier to distinguish having stopped running straight at the group, "If your looking to take a hike for town then the road I can lead you to the road, but I would appreciate if you would depart immediately. Or isss that going to be an isssue?"

Yaki would ask as she looked between the two. If either moved in a hostile manner she would perform the single handseal she needed to increase her weight back up. It would be easier to stab through armor with four hundred pounds of force being distributed into them then it would be for Yaki to fight them with speed. Speed meant nothing really to armor.

As the hours stretched on, Kanae's body began to feel the strain of the hunt. The trek uphill was challenging, and the mountain goats were proving to be quick despite its looks of being slow and tardy, their instincts honed by the harsh environment they called home. But Kouki's experience and Kanae's keen hearing made a formidable team, and eventually (like eight hours later), they managed to ambush the goat.
[break][break]
The moment of truth arrived, Kanae was handed the opportunity to deliver the final blow. The goat was within reach of his weapon, but Kanae felt the weight of the responsibility pressing down on him, heavier than anything he had carried before. His heart pounded in his chest, his hands trembling slightly as he gripped the weapon.
[break][break]
"I'm blind, I can't see. I am weak, I don't have the strength. I am a student, I don't know any ninjutsu." Excuses flooded his mind, each one more desperate than the last. All of them were true, but they weren't the real reason he hesitated.
[break][break]
The truth was, he simply couldn't bear the weight of killing. Even though he understood where the meat he ate back in the village came from, even though he knew that the leather he wore was once part of a living creature, even though he understood the harsh reality of the world, his hands refused to follow through.
[break][break]
His grip loosened, the trembling in his hands becoming more pronounced. "I... I'm sorry..." Kanae whispered, his voice shaky as he stepped back and passed the task to Kouki. The words were filled with guilt and a deep-seated reluctance that he couldn't overcome. He knew this was part of the life he had chosen, but in that moment, it felt like a burden he wasn't ready to carry.

The Wind Calls
I'll follow till I know.

Finding the goats, easy enough. Actually hunting them while uphill...well Kouki had to put all of his hard earned experience to finally corner one with Kanae. It had taken some creative methods to guide the mountain goat in a particular direction, while tiring it out at the same time. Clones ones more were useful in the hunt. Until It all culminated in one single moment.

Kouki’s chest rose rapidly, with each breath he took, as he sprinted through the forest. Sweat dripped down his back and leaves and branches hit his body in an effort to slow him down. But he had it and was so close he could taste it. His target had spotted him but it was too late now, the angle, the form, the pace was just perfect. He. Had. IT.

Pupils dilating, Kouki lunged with all his might and tackled that damn mountain goat right at it’s side. Very quickly he mounted and restrained the thing with his arms wrapped around it’s throat. It took some time but eventually he restricted enough of it’s airflow, to leave it dead tired and unable to run away. Making it very easy to restrain.

Now all that was left, was delivering the killing blow. Something Kouki wanted Kanae to do. With him still holding the goat in place, he got a close view as the younger boy approached and tried to finish the job. Kouki got to see the emotions shift through the blind boy’s face, as he held the weapon above the goat. Kouki could only close his eyes and release a deep sigh, as he heard the boy’s words.

The harsh winds battered at his aching body, his stomachs clenching in hunger and reminded him he was close to reaching his limit and wouldn’t be able to run for much longer. Trembling fingers gripped harder into fur, in an effort to return some feeling into them. But a gaze down revealed that just two would not be enough. He had been weak and was paying for it, worse others were paying for his mistake as well…

"Nature….Nature is harsh Kanae, but also a cycle that constantly moves forward. To Survive in it you must learn to bear the weight of taking a life.” somberly stated Kouki.

Shoulders shifting and pushing back more memories, Kouki then sighed once more. "Killing something to feed yourself is not the same as taking a life as it will be expected of you. Yet it is a lesson you must learn and grow from.”

Trusting the boy’s sensing, Kouki extended his hand towards him and beckoned "Come and we’ll do this together, I’ll share the burden with you.”

He would allow the silence to hang after that statement but only for a moment before he quickly added on. "If you do not... then I’ll let this goat go and have us return to camp empty handed. Not only that but there will be no food to come from hunting for the group, until you do kill one. I will make sure of that.”

Was it harsh of Kouki to say that? To pressure the boy and even use the group’s well-being to guilt him with going through with this...Yes. Yes it was. It was how Kouki was thought up in the mountains, that there was no room for hesitation in order to survive, to live. He would take the troubles, the distraught and even the boy’s ire for this. Would he also go through with his threat? That he was most uncertain about, mostly cause it might involve clashing with Tateyama.

The morning air was crisp, and he found a certain peace in the repetitive motion of pulling down branches, stripping them of excess foliage, and carefully selecting only the strongest pieces.
[break][break]
As Kin chatted excitedly beside him about her plans for lean-tos and the prospect of finding fresh fruits or bird eggs, Hakuma couldn't help but smile a little. Her enthusiasm was infectious, a welcome contrast to the more solemn mood that had seemed to settle over their group since the start of their training. "That's a good idea, Kin-chan," he agreed, nodding approvingly. "If we find the right sticks, we can make a strong frame, and then use the leaves and moss you found to make it more comfortable. And eggs would definitely be a great find—just be careful around the nests, some birds can be pretty protective."
[break][break]
His attention, however, was abruptly diverted by the sound of branches cracking nearby. Hakuma stiffened, immediately scanning their surroundings. When the two strangers emerged, his hand instinctively moved to the kunai pouch at his waist. The man and woman were clearly not shinobi, but their armor and weapons indicated they were no ordinary travelers either. Mercenaries, perhaps. And they were tired—Hakuma noticed the weariness in their eyes, the slight slump in their shoulders.
[break][break]
Listening to their exchange, Hakuma kept his expression neutral, his body relaxed but ready to act if necessary. "Our families aren’t here," he answered carefully, maintaining a polite but guarded tone. "We're out here training. It's a long way to town; if you're lost, our team leader can help direct you back."
[break][break]
Hakuma didn't trust the strangers entirely. He glanced over at Yaki, who had stepped forward to confront the pair. Her tone was sharp, leaving no room for negotiation.
[break][break]
Deciding to take a more supportive role, Hakuma moved subtly to Kin’s side, ready to guide her back to a safer position if needed. He lowered his voice to a whisper, keeping his gaze on the strangers, "Stay close. If things go south, we’ll follow Yaki’s lead. And keep those berries ready—they might be more useful than they look."

Kin found herself a little bit confused, but always curious on her surroundings. Especially when she saw things she'd never seen. The berries for once. Bright and red. She'd remembered though that a lot of colorful things were that way to warn things not to eat them right? She wasn't sure if there was any animal dookie, or signs that anything else was eating them, but Kin would slowly try to figure out if there were signs. Though if nothing else seemed to be eating them? Then neither would she. As she found her way looking through, she found herself giggling with a bright smile.

"Thank you Enko-San!~" She found herself trying to keep her eyes open for whatever might have seemed edible. Some common plants. Or maybe some basic mushrooms that might seem familiar. Kusa was rich in fields and agrarian farmland, and while it wasn't quite the same as the mountain, she figured if she could find signs of disturbances? It could be a great sign. Especially from those boars before. Her eyes trying to scan for obvious signs. However, if nothing else? Kin found herself looking to the tall trees, and found herself somewhat keen on climbing some. Or if not that? Well. She found herself looking for a few smooth stones. Knocking a few birds would be great for protein. Especially if they were on the bigger side like doves.

Crack. Crack. Slowly turning, she'd found herself faced with the dark skinned strangers, adorned in what looked like chainmail and hardened leather. Dark leather gloves. Kin knew that armor like that was fairly expensive, as she was raised and born in a blacksmithing family and clan. That, and she'd also frequented the markets. So, she had the foresight to think beyond the surface. Why were people like this in the mountain? Why they asked if they were with their family or alone? Kin found herself slowly standing behind her taller compatriots, and she'd silently weaved the handseals for the substitution jutsu. Thinking something wasn't quite adding up here.

Those people looked tired. Maybe if they were nice, they could help catch lunch and dinner for the day. Kin found herself slowly holding a smooth stone rock, honestly prepared to throw it. Sure, it wasn't a shuriken, and her throwing skills weren't the best. But she'd had no problems throwing a stone. Kids did it all the time. For now? Kin would shut her mouth and let the grown ups. Or well. Older kids do the talking. Instead, she'd just keep her eyes focused on the people here.

The air thickened with tension as Hakuma adjusted protectively closer to Kin, as Kin wove a couple of handseals and picked up a hand-sized rock, as Yaki stepped forward to intervene with a sharp glare.

"Oh, shit, they’re shinobi,” the woman said, her eyes widening.

"--shinobi-in-training?” the man queried, his brow furrowing as he looked at Kin. "Awfully young—”

"—they all start young,” the woman replied with a heavy sigh. She held her hands up in the universal gesture of hey, no threat here, turned to Yaki, deferring to her as the leader that Hakuma indicated. "No issue, just getting to the road would be great.”

"We lost our boss,” the man chipped in, entirely too cheerful about that fact. "‘posed to rendezvous back in town if we got separated. I just hope she finds her way back too.”

"Sorry to bother,” the woman said apologetically. "Happy training.”

They’d be more than content to follow in Yaki’s wake until they reached the road, thanking her profusely before continuing on their journey, and settling back into an easy back-and-forth of snippy banter.

Meanwhile—Kanae couldn’t bring himself to deal the killing blow to an innocent animal, but Kouki wasn’t giving him much of a choice. An ultimatum: either Kanae killed it himself, or they all went hungry, doomed to subsist on what they could forage until Kanae worked up the nerve to bloody his hands for their meat.

Whatever decision Kanae made, eventually all of the team would reconvene at camp by dusk. Yaki, Hakuma, and Kin’s efforts in gathering materials and foraging for some food had proved fruitful—while the shiny red berries that Kin had found were indeed not the kind the local fauna were eating, there were plenty other herbs and edible plants to be found, plus one plump dove brained to death by Kin and her rock after she had thieved three eggs from its nest.

[RANDOM EVENT ROLL: 12]
It was as the group was settling in to eat—either to the smell of roasting meat or not, depending on Kanae's choices—that they would feel a light tremor shake the earth beneath their feet, though it wasn’t nearly as strong as the one that had knocked them all over before.

Sleep would come regardless of how full their bellies were, and dawn would break to begin the third day. One more night in the wilds, and then they were free to begin their return trip to Kumogakure.

Hakuma felt the tension ebb slightly as the strangers departed, but he kept his guard up, watching them until they were out of sight. Their odd behavior still bothered him—how they seemed relieved yet wary when they realized they were dealing with shinobi, and their story about a missing boss didn’t quite add up. However, they hadn’t been hostile, and Yaki had managed the situation well enough. He gave her a nod of acknowledgment before turning his attention back to Kin.
[break][break]
"You did well, Kin-chan,” he said quietly, his eyes flicking to the smooth stone she still held in her hand. "It's good to stay prepared. Sometimes, just being ready is enough to keep trouble away.” He was relieved to see her cautiousness, yet still, her youthful enthusiasm seemed undiminished.
[break][break]
As they made their way back to camp, Hakuma took stock of the materials and food they had gathered. The herbs and edible plants Kin found would add some flavor to their meal, and he couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of the dove she had managed to catch with a well-aimed throw. "Nice shot,” he remarked with a grin. "Looks like you’re ready to put some of those kunai skills into practice.”
[break][break]
The group worked together to prepare the evening meal. "Everyone did great today," he said. "We got through another day, and we’re a step closer to finishing this training."
[break][break]
Then, a light tremor ran through the ground beneath them. Hakuma's instincts kicked in, and he immediately tensed, scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger. "Did everyone feel that?" he asked, frowning. It wasn’t as strong as the previous quake, but it was enough to put him on alert.
[break][break]
As they prepared for sleep, Hakuma couldn’t help but think of the strangers they had encountered earlier. Something still didn’t sit right with him. But for now, their focus had to be on surviving another night in these wilds. "One more night,” he murmured to himself while drifting off to sleep.

"Huh?..." Kin says confused, when she's called out for her youthful age. Looking to the left and right, finding it rather odd that she was called out above anyone. She could be just as good a ninja as anyone else! Though soon? Their visitors were gone. And the team continued as they always did. From there? Kin had come to set to work. Trying to identify some plants so that they could really start living as opposed to surviving. Flavor the food! Kin did love her fresh food, and with it, she felt just so fortunate to be able to hit a dove with a rock. And oddly enough? She didn't seem all to hung up about putting it out of its misery quickly.

Not that she was sadistic, but she was already used to the idea of that sort of thing. And they were all hungry. The bird gave its life so everyone could eat, and with it, she was sure she wasn't going to let it go to waste. Tying it with a little bit of flexible twigs to the side of her pants, she'd carefully climbed a tree and brought the eggs within her herb filled pockets. Victory! Major victory. Big win! Though later on? It seemed yet another shake had disturbed them from their otherwise good day.

"Whoo...Uh-huh. I felt the shaking. It must be an eruption happenin'." Kin theorized, remembering the ancient story of her own clan. How they themselves were nearly devastated by the power of the inferno of a volanic eruption, back when they still lived within Tsuchi no Kuni. However, it was there, she'd put that aside as they made their way to their campsite. It was there that Kin happily began to get to work laying out her bounty. Hoping to have at least one big meal, or if not, something nice to share with her newfound comrades!

Maybe a nice stew with the eggs, plants, and dove. Presuming they didn't get anything else substantial. Kin had taken some time to get working on shelter too, whilst fire was worked on, and the food was made. She'd taken two Y shaped sticks, stuck them into the earth at an angle, and would use a slightly larger stick and dragged a few lines through the soil and dirt, looking to make a small little divot before she'd place sticks atop of them. A very low effort shelter that would hopefully last a day, made in such a manner where if another shake happened, it might not fully collapse. A few stones placed along the edges to give a bit more support to it. Followed with leaves and lichen to fill in the gaps. It'd make it a comfortable shelter, almost a luxury in the woods.

As for her bed? She'd made it from moss, some dried grass, and would even use the plucked feathers from the dove for extra comfort. Frankly? She felt like things were quite nice. They would hopefully enjoy a nice and rich meal with vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, and would share in each other's company. "Mhm...I'm sad it's almost over. I think I really like camping." The little girl says with a raise of a brow. Throwing a small bit of wood into the fire as she watches it crackle and burn. "...Thank you all for taking care of me! From here on out, you're all my big brothers and sisters okay?"

He had always expected someone else would step in whenever he needed help. He was used to it. Abandoned by his birth parents? No problem, the orphanage took him in. Blind and helpless? No problem, his "mother" taught him echolocation. Lost and hungry? No problem, his orphanage siblings always made sure he was alright. Hard to adapt in the academy? No problem, his best friend Nayu-chan became his eyes.
[break][break]
Unable to bring himself to kill a goat? No problem, just pass it to his senior, right? Right?!? Yet, here he was, with a knife trembling in his hand. He wished Kouki would handle it, but no. Kouki had made it clear, either Kanae do it, or they all go hungry.
[break][break]
The gravity of that sank in deeply. Kanae would have probably chosen starvation for himself if it meant avoiding this moment. But Kouki had framed it differently, it was not just him, but the entire team's fate rested in his hands. His failure would mean the whole team starving!
[break][break]
His heart pounded in his chest. He remembered Kouki's words: "Mikami-san was right. Killing for food isn't the same as murdering someone in cold blood. Yeah, Mikami-san was right... But why isn't my hand moving!? Come on, Kanae!"
[break][break]
The forest was eerily still. Only the soft bleating of the goat broke the suffocating silence. The minutes stretched on, feeling like an eternity as Kanae stood there, the knife shaking in his grip. The longer he waited, the heavier the air became, pressing down on him until, finally, his legs buckled, and he fell to his knees.
[break][break]
"I can't..." Kanae whispered, the weight of failure heavy in his voice. "Kanae means love to smile... killing an animal doesn't make me smile..." He bowed his head in defeat, unable to bear the task before him. "I'm sorry..."

The Wind Calls
I'll follow till I know.

Kouki’s nostrils flared and one of his knees shifted, pressing harder into the goat and making it let out a louder noise. His eyes closed, in response to the scene he had just witnessed, the words he had just heard. He should understand, Kanae was young, had never done something like that and was blind. Kouki was still so angry though and he wasn’t even sure, where the root of that anger was coming from.

Was it because the boy refused and jeopardized his survival for something as silly as Kindness, the fact, that even if just temporary, the group they were apart of now should have been considered his pack and he was essentially turning his back on them with this.

The damn goat was still making noises...so Kouki moved his knee again and pressed it to the goats neck, cutting off more it’s airflow and making it quieter.

Was it because of the memories it brought, Kouki couldn’t really say for sure and that same lack of sureness just flared old insecurities and worries. Which only added to the brewing tempter inside of him.

Despite knowing it had no meaning, Kouki still focused his gaze on Kanae. Kouki’s brows furrowed, and he spat out in a low tone. "Then Nature will chew you up and spit you out, before moving on.”

His eyes moved away, to look at the goat under him and finally Kouki felt some calm falling onto him. He finally understood, how that old mutt had felt when it had looked upon him. Ugh, this was such a simple thing, when he had gone out with Roku, Ichi, It had been such a simple affair. Look how things were done, help and then finish off the prey.

Taking out his knife, Kouki took a few more steadying breaths before speaking. "Did you know? That the thing we just did up till now is pretty much how we wolves hunt our prey. Know the location, check the weather, corner a select animal and then proceed to start tiring it out in a chase.”

Suddenly, Kouki’s arm moved and slammed the knife down into the goats hind leg. In an instant the action filled the clearing with the goat’s loud bleats again, as warm blood splashed against his legs.

"Of course the next part is disabling it. Usually for larger prey it’s aiming for it’s hind legs, neck or nose if possible. Rather dangerous but a few bites do wonders. Of course, for something as small as a goat a good bite, or in this case knife, at the neck is enough to almost kill it instantly, if you know how to do it.” Kouki clinically stated, as he plunged his knife in the goat again, in an angle that would snap some nerve tracks and sever the carotid artery.

As more warm blood splashed against him, Kouki knew he might regret this later but if Kanae didn’t want to learn this lesson, well he at least was going to get a lecture on it.

With a huff, Kouki got up from the rapidly dying goat and without even looking at the younger boy, he turned away and started walking. "Come on. We are going back to camp. I need to go have a talk with Tateyama."

Which he would indeed do as soon as they returned. Not even stopping to clean himself he would search her out and square up in front of her. "There will be no meat tonight. Nor will there be any from any hunting till the end of the exercise, less Kanae does indeed place the finishing blow as it was expected. Kanae chose to disregard survival, so the consequences of that is a lesson he must learn, the rest as well” -he rolled his shoulder and his gaze moved to her covered up mouth- "you of all people should understand what I mean.”

He actually didn’t know Tateyama at all, or how she would react to this but well this would be something he stuck to. So if she opposed, Kouki would argue about and… if it came to it, challenge her authority on this and fight her. Did he feel confident, Nah, but it was the message, such an act would carry, that mattered.

Yakitsukeru would relax as she was given confirmation they were civilians, but it was certainly not something that she was going to show. Leading them to the road she was cautious and made sure to point out the way, but otherwise did not interact with the duo. They had not been alone and that meant there was potentially more. More reason for the group to be cautious tonight. Returning back to Kin and Hakuma, the vipress would pick up the tasks where they had left off. Quiet, and diligent in finishing the seals she had set to make before they settled for the evening.

Her day could not be made better by the return of her hunting team as she was not only shown nothing for their work. A short statement to Kanae's behavior before looking back to Kouki and sighing. She looked over then to Kin and Hakuma who had been cooking what they had found thus far over the fire on hand made skewers, simple work. Moving over to where they had set up camp Yaki would set down the scroll from her back before looking across the group with a hard glare, "There ssseemsss to have been a missscommunication from me to at leassst two of you. You're lucky Kin wasss capable of finding some form of bird and itsss eggsss for you all to eat. The leader'sss resssponsssibility isss to ensssure the wellnesss of a group. Hono-Chan and Enko-Kun, you have in fact done well today," if looks could kill the venom in her voice and gaze shifting to more like that of a true viper then the seeeming snake-like intonation of norm, "Asss for you two. You will eat, and you will do ssso in the dissscomfort of my ssstarvation. That isss the consssequence you will deal with. Though that alone I feel isss sssoft, ssso I will put thisss out. I placed you two in charge of hunting, and you failed to hunt. Ssso, you will sssucceed tomorrow or be failed by any and all power invesssted to me - and you will do ssso handicapped."

It was rare Yakitsukeru removed her Haori, rarer still she removed her scarf. But both were removed, revealing the malformation of her jaw, and the scale-like hard skin that covered her shoulders, neck, and jaw. Walking behind Kouki, Yaki would hiss, "I would ssstretch out your armsss if I were you, or thisss isss going to hurt, a lot."

Placing the Haori over Kouki's clothes, as the sheerness of a little over his body weight would sink over his torso. The weight was distributed, but the slightest shifting would see the weight moving in a painfully uncomfortable fashion. Scraping her thumb open over an incredibly long canine she would draw two more seals onto the scarf, each a fifty pound weight. As she walked over to Kanae who would be bombarded by the scent of sulfur, soot, and rot from the scarf. A scarf that she placed around his neck and tightened so that the weight draped over his chest and back evenly.

"You may find thisss cruel, and it isss. But I wasss not chosssen for my kind heart or compassion for othersss. I am cold, I am calculating, and I sssurvive by knowledge and indifference. I told Enko-Kun if nothing elssse I would teach you all how to think. Then I will demand you think, when you make a choice about the ripple of consssequence to failure. You are shinobi, in-training, but shinobi. Shinobi will kill, they will sssteal, deceive, lay ruin, and be the havoc that did not exissst. You need to sssteel yourssself for when that isss your duty, becaussse failing to do that will mean you did not jussst kill yourssself. You killed your mother, your father, your cousssinsss, their children, your neighborsss, the elderly. It isss a cold, thanklesss, and cruel job - but that isss the price of civilization being sssafe. You would do well to heed that. Make no missstake shinobi are a force of good asss well, but that isss the face of perssspective glaring itsss ugly face over what isss true. If that isss too much for you, then either quit or create world peace. Thossse are your only optionsss with sssuch sssoft waysss of thought, Kojitsuki."

A pause as she moved to sit near the fire, "Wear them until it isss time to sssleep. You will sssleep without them ssso you can react if we get ambushed. If we are not though, I will be fitting them back onto you in the morning, and I will not hear any argument."

Kanae was unable to follow through on killing the goat, his tender heart and trembling hands unwilling to plunge the knife into the goat’s neck and take its life, even if it meant feeding himself and his teammates. Kouki held no such sentiment, and relayed a harsh lecture while killing the goat himself… though he left it behind for the scavengers, following through on his promise that if Kanae was not the one to deliver the death blow, then they would return empty-handed for all their effort.

When they returned to camp to find shelter established, Kin and Hakuma cooking up what they had been able to forage, they were met with Yaki’s venomous scorn. Her lecture was for Kouki as well as Kanae, and they both were to receive the handicap she doled out—her weighted haori and scarf, weighing them down with heavy seals and a heavier lesson.

Yaki herself would go hungry, ensuring that there was enough for the four students to go to sleep with full bellies.

In truth? When she saw how angry Yaki seemed to be, it didn't feel like it was just a scolding, but an actual venom in her voice. Not that Kin knew what venom felt like seeing she'd never been badly stung, bitten, or otherwise injected. Kin took the meal and ate it swiftly, gingerly, and left nothing of it, tossing the eggshells into the flames. Kin would have wanted them hardboiled as to not waste a single thing. Though. It was a little funky considering the circumstances. Three eggs. Four people. Kin looked apologetically towards Yaki, but tried not to let out satisfaction at how good the food was. Didn't feel right. Though if birds always tasted this good? She'd need to throw rocks more often. If they had some rice here, it'd be perfect.

Kin quickly did some math. Everyone was supposed to get three quarters of an egg. Not that she was good with fractions, but if you cut three eggs into four pieces then. You get three of fours. Right? Kin wasn't too sure. But what she did know was she slept well in her little leanover, her cloak acting as a nice blanket. And when morning came? Smelled a little bit too burnt for breakfast. Awakening, she swiftly found herself looking out into the distance, the black smoke rising, Kin's eyes widened. However, she swiftly found herself looking about herself and swiftly hopping up. "Everyone! Wake up! Fire! Fire! Wildfire!" Kin says, presuming she was left to keep watch last on the rotation as she was last time. By that time, she was fairly well rested.

"We need to move fast!" Wetting her finger in her mouth, she holds up her finger to see which direction the wind was blowing, before pointing in the opposite direction. "The other way when wind will blow! Is the place you go when fires glow!" She says, remembering the little rhyme as to remember how to escape a flame. Kind of a big thing in the Hono clan considering their familial origin. Kin had never seen a wildfire of course, but she figured they had a good bit of time to get away. Just had to avoid going where the fire was going to blow and spread. Grasping her meager belongings, she was ready to leave almost immediately.

"If you don't want to croak, then don't breath in smoke." Kin says matter of factly, as she takes her cloak and unwraps it, tying instead wrapping it lightly around her face, prepared to wet it later in case the fire got more intense. For now though? Kin was pretty sure she got it under control! "If you're on fire, out of control, remember to stop, drop, and roll!" Kin says, mostly to herself at this point. Though, she knew at this point Yaki and the other big kids would probably guide her on what to do!

Though...As she looked back to her comfortable little shelter, it did hurt her, the idea it was going to go up in flames when they left it. However, at the very least, she did tell herself idly that she could make an even better one.

The Wind Calls
I'll follow till I know.

Upon their silent return to camp and his short speech, Kouki had expected a lot of reactions from Tateyama. He was not surprised, when she decided to strike out by glaring at them. He knew she was the leader and in the right for this, but he still felt his own heckles rise. The hairs on the back of his neck stood and he felt his lips try and pull back to show his teeth. Thankfully though he stopped the growl that tried to come from the back of his throat as well.

He bore her berating and even accepted the weighted top, with nothing more then a grunt, despite the sudden heavy load, that almost toppled him. Kouki waited and bore the lecture, even spared a glance towards Kanae, but a certain odd feeling began to bubble inside of him as it dragged on.

His fingers flexed, as warmth spread from his gut. This odd emotion kept rising, the more and more Tateyama spoke. Sure, her appearance and confirmation of her walking the path of nature, unlike his own departure from it, probably helped in adding fuel. But no, in this moment, while it aided, it wasn’t anger that he was feeling.

As she finished, her spee- no rant, Kouki had finally placed the emotion. It was disappointment.

Head tilting and blinking a few times, Kouki finally uttered slowly. "This is it? That’s all you are going to say and do?”

A low growl emerged from the back of his throat, as Kouki began to pace very slowly. "You are just going to berate him, offer a light punishment and a threat? That’s all you are going to do? Where is the lesson, were is the wisdom you should offer as an older shinobi, the guiding words you should have spoken, alongside the barbs and harsh truths.

I don’t care what your role is officially but as a leader, as the one responsible, you have duties. To lead by an example, to show how those under your watch should act and direct their growth, that is your purpose.”

With some difficulty, Kouki slashed at the air by throwing his left arm sideways. "This is what a leader does. What have you truly done to contribute to their growth huh. Sharp words and orders, nothing else. How does that help them HUH!?

I already delivered the lesson he didn’t want to hear, showed him a part of the truth. Alongside the reprimand, YOU should have been the one to pick up the pieces. Help him grow from it, show him an example of how to act. What did you in fact do, other then just put him further down. How did your words and punishment truly help him, outside of counting on him having the wisdom to internalize it?”

His breathing had gotten harsher and harsher during the triad and his voice louder, Kouki didn’t stop there and continued. "What you have shown so far is honestly…. Pathetic and for one that studies nature, quite disappointing. You are a bad leader and I pity anyone that would end up under your care!”

Ah, there was the buried anger and resentment at his own failures, at studying senjutsu, rearing their head and adding to the fire. Kouki didn’t realize or care that they were making his words maybe harsher then they should have been. In his experience in the mountain, arguments were always fiery, so he didn’t stop to study his outburst.

What he did instead though was turn towards Kanae. "I’m sorry. I don’t take what I said back, nor do I think I’m wrong but I expected the leader of this pack to know how to use it and help you. For that I’m sorry. If I had known, I would have delivered it differently.”

The rest of the night Kouki would spend quietly and even eat from the small meal, contrary to what he had been thinking, of not eating at all. Reason for that was that he would need his strength for the coming day. He had made up his mind.

This time, last watch hadn’t been offered to him, as such it was actually the smell of smoke that first reached Kouki. At first he assumed it was one of the pups playing with it’s chakra and making mischief, only to realize he wasn’t back on the mountain.

In an instant, his eyes snapped open and Kouki tried to rise up from the ground, the weighted haori coming off his shoulders in a hurry. His body ached from the weight he had to bare but what was more important was the smoke and in fact the fire that had started near there camp.

He was sure the rest, aside from kin, were also waking up, or that those that had been on watch were probably more knowing of what was happening but Kouki still shouted. "Everyone up, We’ve got a fire.”

Grunting, he started sprinting towards the nearest flames and after emptying his water bottle, would start throwing dirt on all the quickly spreading flames in the underbrush.

Kouki knew she had sealed a lot of it and he expected she might have already though of this but he still spoke up loudly. "Tateyama, think you’ll have enough water to smother this?”

Hakuma jolted awake, heart racing as the shouts and acrid smell of smoke hit him all at once. For a moment, he was disoriented, his mind sluggishly piecing together the situation. The remnants of sleep still clung to him, but the sight of the rising black smoke snapped him into full awareness. He heard Kin’s voice, clear and urgent, calling out instructions. "Fire! Fire! Wildfire!"
[break][break]
His golden eyes darted around the camp, quickly assessing the situation. The fire wasn’t too close yet, but it was spreading fast. He could see the flames licking through the underbrush, consuming the dry vegetation with frightening speed. The wind was blowing the smoke in their direction, making it clear they needed to act quickly.
[break][break]
Hakuma nodded in agreement with Kin’s assessment. Her quick thinking and the little rhyme about which direction to go when there was a fire were spot on. "Good call, Kin-chan," he said, his voice calm but firm. "We need to move out, and fast."
[break][break]
He moved swiftly, gathering his belongings. As he slung his pack over his shoulder, he glanced at the others. Kouki was already up, working on dousing some of the flames with dirt. Hakuma could see the effort was admirable, but the fire was too large and too fast-moving for them to extinguish it entirely.
[break][break]
Hakuma then considered the possibility of constructing a fire line, a break in the vegetation that could stop or slow down the fire's advance by removing the fuel. "We might need to make a fire line," he suggested, looking at Yaki and Kouki. "If we clear a path ahead of the fire, we could buy ourselves some time. Thought our tools to do that are quite limited."
[break][break]
His eyes flicked to Kin again, noting her readiness to move and the quick preparations she’d made. He adjusted his cloak around his face to block out the smoke, just as she had done.
