Upon their silent return to camp and his short speech, Kouki had expected a lot of reactions from Tateyama. He was not surprised, when she decided to strike out by glaring at them. He knew she was the leader and in the right for this, but he still felt his own heckles rise. The hairs on the back of his neck stood and he felt his lips try and pull back to show his teeth. Thankfully though he stopped the growl that tried to come from the back of his throat as well.
He bore her berating and even accepted the weighted top, with nothing more then a grunt, despite the sudden heavy load, that almost toppled him. Kouki waited and bore the lecture, even spared a glance towards Kanae, but a certain odd feeling began to bubble inside of him as it dragged on.
His fingers flexed, as warmth spread from his gut. This odd emotion kept rising, the more and more Tateyama spoke. Sure, her appearance and confirmation of her walking the path of nature, unlike his own departure from it, probably helped in adding fuel. But no, in this moment, while it aided, it wasn’t anger that he was feeling.
As she finished, her spee- no rant, Kouki had finally placed the emotion. It was disappointment.
Head tilting and blinking a few times, Kouki finally uttered slowly.
"This is it? That’s all you are going to say and do?”A low growl emerged from the back of his throat, as Kouki began to pace very slowly.
"You are just going to berate him, offer a light punishment and a threat? That’s all you are going to do? Where is the lesson, were is the wisdom you should offer as an older shinobi, the guiding words you should have spoken, alongside the barbs and harsh truths.
I don’t care what your role is officially but as a leader, as the one responsible, you have duties. To lead by an example, to show how those under your watch should act and direct their growth, that is your purpose.” With some difficulty, Kouki slashed at the air by throwing his left arm sideways.
"This is what a leader does. What have you truly done to contribute to their growth huh. Sharp words and orders, nothing else. How does that help them HUH!?
I already delivered the lesson he didn’t want to hear, showed him a part of the truth. Alongside the reprimand, YOU should have been the one to pick up the pieces. Help him grow from it, show him an example of how to act. What did you in fact do, other then just put him further down. How did your words and punishment truly help him, outside of counting on him having the wisdom to internalize it?” His breathing had gotten harsher and harsher during the triad and his voice louder, Kouki didn’t stop there and continued.
"What you have shown so far is honestly…. Pathetic and for one that studies nature, quite disappointing. You are a bad leader and I pity anyone that would end up under your care!”Ah, there was the buried anger and resentment at his own failures, at studying senjutsu, rearing their head and adding to the fire. Kouki didn’t realize or care that they were making his words maybe harsher then they should have been. In his experience in the mountain, arguments were always fiery, so he didn’t stop to study his outburst.
What he did instead though was turn towards Kanae.
"I’m sorry. I don’t take what I said back, nor do I think I’m wrong but I expected the leader of this pack to know how to use it and help you. For that I’m sorry. If I had known, I would have delivered it differently.” The rest of the night Kouki would spend quietly and even eat from the small meal, contrary to what he had been thinking, of not eating at all. Reason for that was that he would need his strength for the coming day. He had made up his mind.
This time, last watch hadn’t been offered to him, as such it was actually the smell of smoke that first reached Kouki. At first he assumed it was one of the pups playing with it’s chakra and making mischief, only to realize he wasn’t back on the mountain.
In an instant, his eyes snapped open and Kouki tried to rise up from the ground, the weighted haori coming off his shoulders in a hurry. His body ached from the weight he had to bare but what was more important was the smoke and in fact the fire that had started near there camp.
He was sure the rest, aside from kin, were also waking up, or that those that had been on watch were probably more knowing of what was happening but Kouki still shouted.
"Everyone up, We’ve got a fire.”
Grunting, he started sprinting towards the nearest flames and after emptying his water bottle, would start throwing dirt on all the quickly spreading flames in the underbrush.
Kouki knew she had sealed a lot of it and he expected she might have already though of this but he still spoke up loudly.
"Tateyama, think you’ll have enough water to smother this?”
