And time meant next to nothing when it came to filling that void. "Mmm… I’m sorry all the same.” [break][break] "So… where were you before that? What sort of-” Hakurei spoke quietly, almost surreptitiously, enthralled as if the question itself were some forbidden secret. Asuka was a mystery that needed solving in a way that energized him. The jounin had become so accustomed to the burden of protecting, providing, and caring for so many that it came as a bit of a shock to his system to spend time with someone that didn’t make him tired. It was like the cold splash of leaping into the ocean after a long run on a hot day. [break][break] "You don’t have to answer that if it’s too personal. Maybe this isn't the time. I’m just…” Hakurei emphasized the next word, "very interested in getting to know you better.” The amount of casual physical contact between the two as they walked was exhilarating. It was more than what would be natural for new acquaintances or even lifelong friends and Hakurei wanted to assure Asuka that he was into it. He found himself becoming more attracted to Asuka the more time he had to soak in the other man’s features.

And there came the question Asuka didn’t want to answer. At least, not in public. Shaking his head and taking an equally shaky inhale, the young man was glad when he caught sight of the grocery store, just ahead of them. ”I will tell you just… not in public, please? It’s a long story, and a painful one. I’d rather not dwell on it outside the comfort of my own home,” he responded, voice barely loud enough to be heard over the crowd in the streets. Taking longer strides than was strictly necessary, the medic guided Hakurei to the store he needed to get to, pulling the door open with no other words spoken.

He didn’t want to dwell on that old pain, but just mentioning it was enough to bring up the ache at the thought of the darkest years of his childhood. Those years had easily been the worst of his life, and he didn’t like to be reminded of how he’d been manipulated back then.

Sighing and shaking his head once more to clear it, Asuka entered the store with his mental list of needed groceries at the front of his thoughts. There were a fair few things to get, that would weigh far more than the simple basket of herbs Hakurei was holding, but it wouldn’t be awful to carry back. Medic or not, he was still a jounin, grocery bags were hardly beyond his own physical strength. ”I mostly need produce from here, but there will be a few other things to grab. Eggs, a few kinds of meat, tofu,” he recited, avoiding any subjects that weren’t related to the purchases he needed to make. He was thankful jounin earned a pretty good salary, and surgeons like him were in demand enough to be paid well. Meat could be expensive, but a healthy diet went a long way in keeping one’s physical condition up.

I understand... So, what's on this list?" He said, hoping to change the subject as they entered the bustling grocery store. He was worried he might have upset Asuka and that was the last thing he wanted. As they walked into the store, Hakurei was immediately astonished by the bounty of color and variety before him. Growing up on an ice-covered island, his experience with fresh produce was limited to what could be grown in large greenhouses. Most of their crops came from trade with other regions, so he wasn't familiar with many of the ingredients on the list. The vibrant hues of fruits and vegetables, the neatly stacked shelves of canned goods, and the aromatic spices filled the air with an enticing symphony of flavors. Hakurei couldn't help but smile as he realized he was in a food lover's paradise. "This is a bit overwhelming," he admitted. "I'll gladly pay for the groceries. It's the least I can do to thank you for your warm hospitality."
