With Yuzuki seemingly being fine with his suggestion, it wouldn't take them long before they started making their move towards it. Since the river wasn't exactly some kind of hidden glade where the last of the unicorns could be found, everyone knew where to find it. That said, there were some parts where the water was less unruly, making it a great spot for swimmers, which made it a horrible spot for those that wanted to fish. After all, every body that got dropped into the water and started thrashing and flailing about meant that one might as well pack in their gear and go back home. So the thing would be in finding the right spot that was just the right amount of unruly and calm.

"Fishing is one of the few times where I can turn my brain off. Soaking in a hot spring also does the trick, especially when I fully liquify, at least until someone else steps in."

Since it was weird for both himself to be in a liquid state when someone else was wading through the same waters in the nude, those same people believing they were in there alone sometimes made it even more weird. As such, he made a point out of going after hours so he was certain there wasn't a soul left within its waters. While moving towards the river, he hadn't really expected that Yuzuki had gotten around to trying the recipe he had mentioned in passing. As it was one of the recipes he had memorized from one of many cook books, and one he rather enjoyed himself, it was at the very least good to hear.

"Ah, that's good to hear. It's a recipe that came from one of my mom's books. And yes, I rather enjoy Ito. They're big fish, so there's plenty to eat. The bones are easy to remove, as are the organs, so preparing it for dinner isn't very hard."

"Not as bony." She nods, following along with the line of thought he presents. As they walk along the bank, she's got one half of her mind on the conversation and the other on the ripples in the world around her. "I like shirasu and katsuo."

Served with a bowl of steaming hot rice... Ah, she's craving it now.

"Here."

A sudden pause in her tracks, her eyes flitting over the soft churning waters. Life hides beneath the surface, and she'd be a fool to let them pass over one of the best spots along the whole river.

"The latter, it's kinda weird when people suddenly notice you're there. Though perhaps still not as weird as what some people do when they 'think' they're alone in there. So I guess it depends on the situation."

Without a doubt, it was something that made for some odd situations, though it was nothing he couldn't just shrug off and move past. The life of a shinobi was by its very definition weird, as there was no way of knowing just what kind of individual one might be facing next in battle. Some were like him, capable of transforming their body into a sentient mass of liquid, while others could shape and control ice or create constructs of light that seemed to destroy anything they touched down to their base molecules. The amount of different abilities that seemed to be restricted to one's genetics meant that one had to always be cautious when out in the field.

Come to think of it, he had already managed to see a select few of these unique abilities during the short time he had spent as a shinobi, which was undoubtedly going to be of great use to him in the future, as well as during the Chuunin exams. At least, so he hoped. When the two reached a spot Yuzuki deemed fit enough for fishing, she mentioned two names that quite frankly did not really resonate with him. Scratching his chin for a bit, he honestly couldn't figure out what kind of fish they were as he decided to just cast his line and take a seat by the waterside.

"I'm not sure i've heard those names before, what are they?"

"Huh. Guess you'll see all kinds."

She will not ask for details, but her tone indicates room for discussion if he needs to vent. Taking her own seat, she fiddles around with Isonami for a minute, checking for any nicks or abnormalities in the line.

"Shirasu refers to fish fry in general. Katsuo is a kinda tuna, the one that makes katsuoboshi, that you can then simmer with konbu to make dashi."

Though he nodded his head, there were still a bunch of things Yuzuki spoke of that honestly meant nothing to him in the sense that he had no idea what it meant. Up until now, he had learned quite a lot about cooking from the books he had at his disposal, though he wouldn't lie when he'd say that he was mostly sticking to what he knew. He knew exactly what type of food he liked, and which types of food seemed like they wouldn't be overly pleasant. So while he was aware of the fried food angle, as he had had that before, he wasn't really aware that that was what it was called. But now that he had heard about it, he was unlikely to forget.

With his line cast and the bobber sitting atop the water's surface, it was difficult to keep track of it by sight alone. Or rather, it was quite difficult to figure out whether there was a fish nibbling at his bait or whether it was just the unruly water rushing against it, meaning he couldn't set it down and just watch it lazily from a distance. He would need to hold the rod in hand and base his assumptions on feel rather than sight. Because at the end of the day, the difference between a tug from a fish or a bit of rushing water could easily be felt through the line and all the way down the pole. That at least was one thing he had learned and gotten better at, something that was tangible.

"Isn't Tuna something you fish out of the sea? I don't think i've ever had any."

But when he doesn't follow up with any questions, she reckons that it must be fine to leave it at there. After all, what's the worst that could happen if he gets it wrong in front of others?

"Shirasu season should be coming soon... Maybe I should go fix my nets so I can catch 'em proper." Or she could simply bargain for some from the local fish market. It wouldn't be too hard considering how often she patronised their store.

With Isonami properly looked over and determined to have no worrying anomalies, she hoists her fishing pole back, then casts it out into the churning waters. Unlike Ken (You actually got it right?), she is confident enough to set her rod down and kick back.

"Yeah, ya gotta get out there and put in some real effort to catch it. But it's so worth! If you want, I can share some with you the next time I catch one."

Having pondered on it for a while as he just kept in contact with the fishing pole, he was certain he had heard the term 'shirasu' used before, though it remained elusive enough to the point where he couldn't recall it at all. It bothered him when something like it happened, as he always took pride in his mind and the way in which he could recall important stuff rather quickly once he had memorized it properly, which had been of immense use to him in a plethora of combat situations. It wasn't until she mentioned a 'shirasu season' and having to set out nets to properly catch them that the ball finally started rolling.

"Wait... you said shirasu was a term for fried fish, but isn't shirasu like.. a whole bunch of tiny little fish?"

He remembered something about how the practice of catching a massive amount of fish that had just been spawned, only to dump them right into boiling oil seemed completely and utterly barbaric to him. There had always existed a fine line between catching, killing and eating an adult fish and catching, killing and eating dozens of freshly spawned ones, which was why he had honestly never tried it when he had the chance. He imagined that this entire practice was likely making huge dents in the overall population of whatever species those whitebait belonged to. It made him wonder if Tuna was eaten in the same way now that he thought about it, though he did appreciate the gesture.

"Yeah, I would appreciate that."

Amusement tugs at her lips, her cheek tucked into her palm as she turns to look at him. "There are many species that contribute to the collective term of shirasu. Also, I prefer mine boiled. Frying 'em can take away the flavour."

There were regulations around fishing for them. Limited times of year, how much a person could catch. Personally, she was quite careful with it. The ocean was kind in letting her reap the bounties, but it would also berate her when she got greedy and wail about the others who would not respect the deep.

She'd listen as a child of the boundless sea, let things be until the storms settled. But if a day were to ever come where she was asked to stop people, would she be able to act?

For a moment, there is silence, her gaze trapped within the churning rapids as she ruminates on the idea.

"Oooh, I thought you meant 'fry' as in fish you bread before frying it. But that makes more sense."

Now that the ball had finally started rolling as far as Shirasu went, Ken finally understood what they were talking about. It now made a lot of sense that he had never heard the term Shirasu used for any kind of frying dishes, as he believed the coined term for that was Tempura. It also made sense why the word Shirasu took him to a particular kind of fish offspring, as he had always considered it odd that people would eat fish eggs or tiny little fish that couldn't possibly feel a person's stomach. Food like that just seemed like it was vain as it served no purpose other than being a 'delicacy' that benefitted exactly no one aside from those who got to overcharge for the product.

"Hmm, i've never had it myself since it doesn't sound all that pleasant, and i'm not sure if it contributes to the species if they are caught in massive numbers like that."

In spite of his age, Ken often thought about things such as these, especially since he began getting involved in a household of his own. Going to the grocery store, fishing by himself in the streams and rivers or in some cases the sea itself, as well as having to do the cooking. All of these things had opened his eyes to things most people his age would never have to worry themselves with even once, not for a few more years. What bothered him about that was that people at the market or in stores had a tendency of asking for pretty robust prices while willingly risking the fact that a lot of fresh fish got thrown out the moment they reached a certain date of 'expiration'. And while he understood that these rules were in place, sometimes, he would snag some of these 'expired' products as they were still perfectly safe to eat if cooked properly.

"Besides, I feel like people tend to overcatch by a rather large margin, as I always see fish being thrown out for expiring down by the market while it can still be eaten just fine."

That doesn't mean that it is okay to overfish them but rather, human intervention in the natural cycle of things tends to make things go south. "Surprisingly, quite a few fishermen out here follow rules about not fishing them for most parts of the year and how much they can catch for the season. Doesn't stop waste in its entirety, but tries to reduce it."

Words like these make him sound frugal. That isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, she'd also be the kind to lurk around for that moment prices got slashed to sell the remaining fish. She just hopes he isn't going to extreme ends and putting his own health at risk.

"Overcatching is something you can try to regulate. People are still going to break the rules for profit or be cause they're blinded by greed. Fines and punishment are all we got. You can release surviving fishes back into the waters if those people are caught, but the worst will be if you try to stop them in its entirety. 'cos that just means more people are going to try to skirt around the rules and do things in secret rather than in public view."

There simply won't be enough people to go around chasing all those damn smugglers.

Watching the bobber as it began moving for a bit, it seemed as though it was just a small fry that was eating at the bait, likely being too small to really hook itself and get caught. It was arguably the best outcome as it might not end up eating the entire bait, and saved Ken the trouble of having to unhook it and toss it back out there with what might very well become a mild concussion born out of annoyance. All the while, he heard what was being said and how it had almost become a sort of economic and ecologic debate. Truth be told, he did not care about it as much as others, he just didn't think it was right catch so many young fish or overfish and toss out a lot due to expiring.

"I guess reducing waste is never a bad thing, though I don't think hitting people with a fine would ever really keep them from doing what they're doing until those fines become hefty enough to make an impact. Otherwise, they'll just take the loss and go on as they will."

Even though he had become a police officer so he could actually hand out such fines and make an attempt at bettering the villages both inside and out, he was the kind that was leaning more towards physical beatings or actually high fines rather than just tapping people on the fingers. This was especially true when it was clear that the perpetrator knew they were breaking the law, doing that kind of thing on purpose because they had plenty of money to the point where a fine didn't harm them in the slightest. But with things being what they were, Ken almost missed the fact that his bobber went under completely. Tugging at his rod to make sure the hook was lodged, he stood upright and looked at the water.

While some may call her negligent or uncaring, she simply knows that there are things in this world that don't simply change because you decide to stop a person or two. And she is incapable of cracking down on a country, much less several countries all on her own.

"Kinda wish that the sea would be more ruthless with her judgement." That the legends regarding angering the ocean when humans got too greedy were real. People tended to cow from greater powers that could not be overcome. "Ah, but then again, people might start calling us to fight sea monsters and stuff..."

It's strange, how much thought she actually puts into this run of the imagination. The only time she ever pauses her train of thought is when she hears him saying he's got something on the hook, something she confirms rather quickly.

Struggling against the fish, the moderately rough waters and the fact that he had to split his attention between the fish and the conversation, this whole thing was as much a training exercise as some of the other things Ken had been up to over the past few months. Judging by the strength of the fish, he could tell that it was more than likely one of his favorite adversaries: the delicious Ito. Judging by the way it fought, it might as well have been a pike, though the bait he used was far from what one of those long toothed buggers would be going for in terms of dinner.

After a struggle, Ken made sure that the fish was close enough to the surface that it wouldn't be able to snag the line under some submerged piece of wood or rubble as it became rather visible while thrashing about. In time, the fish eventually tired itself out, making it easier for the boy to bring his catch back in. Knowing what was to come, he placed down the tarp in preparation before eventually tugging the fish out of the water and onto dry land. Without wasting as much as a moment, he unsheathed Kagewani and severed the head from the rest of the body, causing it to fall down on top of the tarp while the head remained attached to the line.

"Honestly, i'd welcome sea monsters over people sometimes. At the end of the day, a monster is a monster, but with people, you never really know what you'll get. Someone might seem nice one moment, and try to stab you in the gut with a knife when you're not paying attention."

"I ain't that good at figuring out who wants to kill me in my sleep. Probs why they put me on a team with Takeshi. He's got a lot better of an eye for people than I do."

"It is dark, though it is the way of the world. Especially if you're a shinobi, though I guess there are some exceptions to the rule, as well as some that seem to be proving the rule ten times over."

The fact that Yuzuki could at the very least laugh about what he said was probably a good thing. He didn't mean for things to get dark, it just seemed to be the present turn of their current conversation. But as he spoke, his tone of voice did not shift towards the gloomy or the sad, it remained the same as it always was, as did the expression on his face. To say that he appeared entirely unbothered would be quite on point. In fact, he seemed pretty focused on his task as he took the head from the hook and tossed it back into the water. It might have seemed careless, though he felt like any parts he personally wouldn't be using should be given back to the river. That way, whatever else lived down there would be able to feed on it rather than stowing it into a trash can.

"My grandma is one of the lucky shinobi i've met that had the chance to pass away in her sleep, surrounded by people she loved. My parents were murdered by the Sanbi, probably surrounded by screams and destruction. So you can see how fairness doesn't really seem to play a role."

Using Kagewani to disembowel the fish, he made sure to bleed it out above the water as he tossed the innards into the river as well. The less blood he would be holding up in his tarp, the easier it would be to clean and the less of a trail it might leave behind him once he would take it back into the village. Since he had given away a bit more about what his own family life was like, and some of the stuff that had transpired over the years, he wondered how that might alter their current discussion. That said, he felt like he needed to at the very least bring up one thing Yuzuki had said that he hadn't responded to before.

"You said earlier that maybe the sea needed to be more ruthless with her judgement. I think maybe it should, though maybe so should our society."
