It had been some time since Shō's last visit to the southern islands, the archipelago which had only been discovered and developed recently. He couldn't help but ponder the progress of development and settlement there. In the past, he had taken on a relatively low-ranking mission related to the island. While it wasn't really a significant or major task, he felt a sense of satisfaction knowing he had contributed to the settlement's growth.

Ultimately curiosity got the better of him, prompting him to inquire for the latest updates. To his dismay, the news he received from the newsagent was grim. "Many children have been abducted by pirates." the reporter informed him. "No one knows the exact reason, but rumours suggest it might be for human sacrifices to a sea god or something." Shō stopped listening after the word "kidnapped" his mind racing with concern. He quickly thanked the reporter and made his way straight to the guild centre.

As expected, a mission related to the kidnappings was posted on the bulletin board. However, it was clear that he would need a partner, preferably someone experienced, as this mission carried extreme danger. Shō wasn't afraid of the "B" rank assigned to the mission or its associated risks; rather, he dreaded the possibility of failure leading to the children's deaths.

At that moment, he recalled Minami Sora. 「Yes, I should seek out Sora-sensei.」 he thought. Without wasting any time, he hurried to her apartment, hoping she hadn't relocated in the past year.

[Sora Minami]

It was rare for Sora to spend much time at home these days. Between training with her Genin, paperwork, missions, and all absolute flood of requests to train with other Shinobi, the Jounin had found her free time drastically reduced, so much so that, when she finally managed to nab a day off, she relished the opportunity to do nothing but relax. Or, at least her version of relax.

"One two three four…" The pink-haired woman said as she swung her shinai, flowing through the practice forms of Ittoryu, twisting her wrists and shifting her feet with every sweeping cut and quick thrust. Her sky-blue gaze was calm and focused, every motion precise in the way of true speed, not hurried but practiced, intentional, and balanced. She hadn’t had a chance to do this in the last few months, and could feel the places in her arms and legs where she had been cheating on certain motions. Correcting those small mistakes in form didn’t usually amount to much, maybe a millimeter more precision here, a tenth of a second of speed gained there- but when you added it up, it often meant the difference between life and death.

So it was that, when the knock at her door, Sora was covered in a thin sheen of sweat, her long gray hakama and trousers clinging slightly to her frame as she turned towards the door, shinai in hand, lips twitching in a frown. Ikana wasn’t supposed to return for several hours yet -the girl was off working in her shop- so who could this be?

"The door’s unlocked." She said, loud enough to be heard from the small dojo next to the living room. Whoever it was couldn’t be all that dangerous- even if Inei had come to reclaim his dignity, she wasn’t particularly worried. She had beaten him already, after all. "I’m in the dojo!"

The Kunoichi That Goes On And On And On… [Endurance SA]
Perhaps part of her genetics or simply a random quirk of fate, Sora is unnaturally resilient, be it to physical pain or the toils of extended combat. While most Shinobi would collapse in exhaustion at having used all but the smallest sliver of their chakra reserves, she pushes on; while most Shinobi would wilt beneath the weight of sleepless night after sleepless night, she keeps going. This does not mean she does not feel pain/the strain of extended combat, but rather that her threshold for shutting down because of it is far higher than others. To give an example, if she were to be stabbed through her abdomen, she would still feel the pain of the injury, and it would hinder her ability to move/act, but it wouldn’t stop her, whereas a normal ninja might freeze up or shut down from the pain.

Bet You Didn’t See That Coming [Speed SA]
A byproduct of her enhanced endurance, Sora (despite what many would think) dislikes being injured- and with that dislike comes the intense desire to avoid getting hurt, a desire that has pushed her to hone her body until it could move faster than most others of her rank. In short, Sora is fast- very, very fast.

POWAH! UNLIMITED POWAH!! [Chakra Reserves SA]
After a lifetime of utilizing nearly every ounce of chakra in her body just to survive, Sora’s chakra reserves have expanded a considerable amount to compensate- while she’s no Jinchuuriki, her ability to toss out jutsu after jutsu and still have enough chakra to keep going is quite remarkable, a testament to just how much of the stuff she actually has.

I Am Not Left-Handed [Kenjutsu Mastery SA]
Sora is not merely a Kenjutsu specialist- she is a master when it comes to the art of the sword; after over two decades of training, her skills are unrivaled within Kirigakure, falling short only to the Seven Swordsman themselves… some of them, anyway. This mastery allows her a distinct advantage when fighting other Bukijutsu specialists of similar or lesser rank.

If You Try For Speed, You Do Not Achieve Speed [Bukijutsu Speed SA]
Beyond being a master of Kenjutsu, Sora has practiced for decades to become the faster swordswoman she can be. As such, her Kenjutsu techniques come out faster and move quicker than those performed by others of her rank.

Unbreakable
Whatever metal and forging process was used in the creation of Samidare, it worked; Samidare is utterly unbreakable by most any means, capable of being engulfed in an S-Rank Jutsu and remaining unscathed. Though it is possible that the blade could potentially be broken by a sufficiently powerful attack (such as, say, a Bijuu-dama), this has never been tested, so it is not known if it would survive.

Sharper Than Your Average Blade
Due to its nature as an unbreakable blade, Samidare bears a cutting edge that is of particular note, which allows it to slice through even steel with little in the way of resistance, so long as the proper force is applied. Additionally, this edge never needs to be resharpened, as it never grows dull or rolls, thus making it perfect for frontline combat.

Light as Spring Rain
Perhaps a quirk of its forging (or perhaps an intentional feature), Samidare is considerably lighter than a blade its size and length ought to be; while this would normally result in a less effective weapon, Samidare loses none of its integrity or cutting power, as it is somehow able to leverage the same amount of force through less mass. This lightness allows the user to swing the weapon about with much greater speed for the same amount of physical exertion.

Chakra Conduction
Being Chakra Conductive, Samidare is capable of channeling all types of Chakra for use in Bukijustu, and, more particularly, it has a slight affinity for Raiton chakra thanks to Sora’s constant use of the blade for that purpose. This affinity does not do anything of real note, but it does feel as if the blade were more eager to drink in Raiton Chakra than other types.

Knock, knock, knock. Shō rapped gently on the door, but there was no response even after he identified himself. Just as he was about to leave, the door swung open, but it wasn't Sora-sensei's door, it belonged to her neighbour.

"Are you looking for Sora-san?" inquired the elderly woman, noticing the still-startled young man. Shō quickly composed himself and replied courteously, "Good morning. Yes, I'm looking for Sora-sensei." As they conversed, Shō came to realise that Sora had moved out shortly after becoming a Jōnin. While the kind old lady didn't possess the precise address, she informed Shō that Sora now resided near the Kuronmeru compound.

Shō had previously visited the Kuronmeru compound to train with Keiji, so navigating the area wasn't a challenge for him. He eventually located Sora's new, larger house. It must be an expensive house, considered it was located near the centre of the village. After straightening his attire once more, he gave the door a gentle knock. Before he could announce himself, he heard a loud response from Sora-sensei.

"Oh..." Slightly taken aback, he took a deep breath and introduced himself before entering. "Shō is here. I'm coming in." Without wasting any time, he headed toward the source of the noise to meet the Jōnin and explain the purpose of his visit. "I apologise for this sudden visit, but it's quite urgent. Children are being kidnapped in the new settlements on the southern island. I humbly request your assistance in rescuing them." He then handed the mission poster to Sora for her review.

It took Sora all of half a second to recognize the disembodied voice behind her door. Huh. Sora thought as she lowered her shinai, turning towards the dojo’s entrance as Sho made his way into her home, his steps hurried and somewhat nervous. I wonder what he’s here for. His last visit had not exactly been a light one and, though she had been glad to help the boy with his troubles, that was not how she wanted to-

The Jounin woman paused mid thought as Sho thrust the mission poster forward, explaining his reason for disturbing her day off quickly and succinctly, though her brain didn’t process most of the details. It didn’t need to, really. He had her the moment he’d mentioned the children.

"Give me a few minutes to get my gear." She said, voice flat and hard as she took the mission post from Sho, allowing him a brief moment to move out of her way before she strode out of the room, shinai still in hand.

Exactly five minutes and seven seconds later, the pink-haired Jounin walked out of her room in full kit, Samidare on her left hip just beside the bottom edge of her flacket jacket, headband tight against her brow. She didn’t usually wear it on her forehead, but a mission like this called for it. She wanted the bastards to know who would be killing them, after all.

"Let’s go."

It wasn’t exactly a bad thing but this smooth process felt unusual for him and he wasn’t really accustomed to it. In gratitude for her quick acceptance, Shō responded with a respectful bow. "Thank you. I'll wait for you right here."

Initially, he had expected a wait of around half an hour or at least fifteen minutes, but Sora efficiently prepared herself in just five minutes. This highlighted the contrast between a seasoned veteran like her and a fresh sixteen-year-old like him. At first he was a little bit anxious, but with Sora at his side, Shō couldn't help but feel relief and hopeful.

"Understood." Sho responded to Sora's calling for departure. With no further delay, they embarked on their journey to the southern dock. The path ahead promised to be a lengthy one, so Shō had taken the precaution of bringing ample provisions for both himself and Sora, with a bit extra in case they succeeded in rescuing some children. He earnestly hoped that the extra supplies would serve its intended purpose, and that the children would be safe.

They would go by a very small river boat towards the coast where they could board a larger Suiryu Butai ship and begin sailing towards the archipelago. By the time they reached their destination the sun of the autumn day had started to set, but set the sky ablaze with a pale frosted blue with the promise of darkness soon to come in an incoming polar night. It was not until much later that the sky turned to an inky whirlpool pricked with an infinite amount of constellations the moon their guide in the dark.

The waves were soon calm, the sea was soothing with the rush of waves and wind, the lulling and rolling carrying their ship along like a lullaby.

It was here, in this seeming black nothingness that the ship stopped moving forward, somewhere between two distant pieces of land - impossible to tell as they were shrouded in darkness too - here they could look for passing ships and pirate ships bold enough to show themselves.

The crew of the ship settled, the Captain at the helm started to come down from his spot up top.

"Aye, there 'round here somewhere," He grumbled, he had a gruff and grizzled voice as he spoke to Sho and Sora. "Ya ain't gonna miss'em that's fer sure."

Sora spent her time aboard the pair of ships in silence, half-meditating, half-sleeping through the various stages of their journey that didn’t require her to be outright awake to do something. Pirate hunts could be dangerous and deadly affairs, but they rarely happened when one was well-rested, so she would take what she could get, when she could get it. It was entirely possible they’d have to be awake well past midnight to deal with these scum, after all. And so the hours passed without much news, her and Sho settling into a quiet rhythm as the Captain and crew of their ship took them deeper out to sea… until, when the night was at last full and the dark deep, they arrived at their hunting ground.

"I’ve full faith you and your crew can find them, Captain." She said, not moving from her spot as she leaned back against the quarterdeck, waiting. The sailors would have a better idea of what to look for than she would- her experience with pirate hunting was almost exclusively on land, after the group’s lair had already been found, so anything she might have to add was likely both obvious and maddeningly unhelpful.

"You got a plan for how we’re going to take these guys without any of the hostages getting hurt?" Sora asked Sho once the Captain had moved out of earshot, her voice low enough so that snooping ears wouldn’t hear as she crossed her arms beneath her chest, let hand flashing the young Chuunin a quick series of Hunter-nin signs, meant more to ensure he was paying attention than anything else., though it would be good practice for his non-verbal communication skills. Mission objective paramount. Protect civilians. I’ll point.

Perhaps part of her genetics or simply a random quirk of fate, Sora is unnaturally resilient, be it to physical pain or the toils of extended combat. While most Shinobi would collapse in exhaustion at having used all but the smallest sliver of their chakra reserves, she pushes on; while most Shinobi would wilt beneath the weight of sleepless night after sleepless night, she keeps going. This does not mean she does not feel pain/the strain of extended combat, but rather that her threshold for shutting down because of it is far higher than others. To give an example, if she were to be stabbed through her abdomen, she would still feel the pain of the injury, and it would hinder her ability to move/act, but it wouldn’t stop her, whereas a normal ninja might freeze up or shut down from the pain.

A byproduct of her enhanced endurance, Sora (despite what many would think) dislikes being injured- and with that dislike comes the intense desire to avoid getting hurt, a desire that has pushed her to hone her body until it could move faster than most others of her rank. After a lifetime of utilizing nearly every ounce of chakra in her body just to survive, Sora’s chakra reserves have expanded a considerable amount to compensate- while she’s no Jinchuuriki, her ability to toss out jutsu after jutsu and still have enough chakra to keep going is quite remarkable, a testament to just how much of the stuff she actually has.

I Am Not Left-Handed [Kenjutsu Mastery SA]
Sora is not merely a Kenjutsu specialist- she is a master when it comes to the art of the sword; after over two decades of training, her skills are unrivaled within Kirigakure, falling short only to the Seven Swordsman themselves… some of them, anyway. This mastery allows her a distinct advantage when fighting other Bukijutsu specialists of similar or lesser rank.

Beyond being a master of Kenjutsu, Sora has practiced for decades to become the faster swordswoman she can be. As such, her Kenjutsu techniques come out faster and move quicker than those performed by others of her rank.

Whatever metal and forging process was used in the creation of Samidare, it worked; Samidare is utterly unbreakable by most any means, capable of being engulfed in an S-Rank Jutsu and remaining unscathed. Though it is possible that the blade could potentially be broken by a sufficiently powerful attack (such as, say, a Bijuu-dama), this has never been tested, so it is not known if it would survive.

Sharper Than Your Average Blade
Due to its nature as an unbreakable blade, Samidare bears a cutting edge that is of particular note, which allows it to slice through even steel with little in the way of resistance, so long as the proper force is applied. Additionally, this edge never needs to be resharpened, as it never grows dull or rolls, thus making it perfect for frontline combat.

Light as Spring Rain
Perhaps a quirk of its forging (or perhaps an intentional feature), Samidare is considerably lighter than a blade its size and length ought to be; while this would normally result in a less effective weapon, Samidare loses none of its integrity or cutting power, as it is somehow able to leverage the same amount of force through less mass. This lightness allows the user to swing the weapon about with much greater speed for the same amount of physical exertion.

Chakra Conduction
Being Chakra Conductive, Samidare is capable of channeling all types of Chakra for use in Bukijustu, and, more particularly, it has a slight affinity for Raiton chakra thanks to Sora’s constant use of the blade for that purpose. This affinity does not do anything of real note, but it does feel as if the blade were more eager to drink in Raiton Chakra than other types.

It was the same familiar route, the same expanse of sea, but this time the purpose and emotions were entirely different. Shō cast his gaze over the vast blue ocean for a moment before opting to take a break. At first, it might seem like a terrible decision given their targets were pirates who would appear anytime, but it was the best choice available. Rather than risking fatigue during the night time, when pirates were more likely to be active, he chose the lesser risk and took his rest during the day. There was a third option, foregoing sleep entirely, but that would leave him far from his best when the mission began.

Soon, the night fell upon them. Now fully surrounded by darkness in the middle of the ocean, all they had to do were wait. Even if no pirate ships crossed their path, they were well-prepared for an extended stay. They had an abundance of provisions, enough to last them for days if necessary. "We can do this all day." He muttered, though he clearly hoped their target would appear sooner rather than later. Waiting was an option they could afford, but the same couldn't be said for the abducted children.

Sora's arrival momentarily interrupted Sho's anxious thoughts about the mission. He absentmindedly rubbed his chin as he responded, "I'm thinking genjutsu might be our best bet. Given the darkness and mist surrounding us, a mist-based genjutsu could prove quite effective." Concerned that his explanation might not be clear, he hurriedly added, "Basically, I can manipulate their senses under the mist, effectively concealing our movements. In fact, I have another visual genjutsu up my sleeve that could work too."

In truth, he had several ideas. Infiltration was one of his strong suits. As he described his abilities to Sora, he mentioned his abilities to move around the wooden ship undetected with his kekkei genkai, copying the enemy's appearance, casting subtle illusions, and even compelling the enemy to divulge information. Sho slowly detailed the potential moves to Sora and ultimately left the final planning and decision to her, recognising her greater experience as a kunoichi.

The two discussed their plan quietly, though Sho was mistaken to think that there was any mist around. It was a clear night, with lots of stars that were visible and bright in the heavens. Indeed, that clarity was what would likely give them quicker sight of any other ships that came gliding by on the dark sea.

There were no sights of pirates, and a few hours seemed to move by without notice as they planned. There was not a good feeling about all of this though, not truly. There was just so much darkness, that even the ship they were in would unlikely be visible to the naked eye. Obscured by an almost infinite inkiness of the world at night. Dreadful, ominous, the world holding its breath. If they stared out too long it might unsettle them.

Then out of nowhere the Captain returned -

"Aye, there..." He pointed into the darkness and there was the vague shape of a ship.

But now, the duo had to figure out their approach most sincerely. Would they traverse the murky inky sea by foot, by dingy or see if the target would get closer? There was no guarantee it would get closer though and each minute that slipped by was a precious moment gone.

The hours passed slowly, the inky blackness around them growing ever deeper as the night waned on. Sho’s suggestion to use the mist to obscure their approach was taken into account and rejected fairly quickly; the night sky, while dark, was clear for miles, leaving little in the way of cloud cover to explain away the sudden shift in weather. If they were to approach, it would have to be without the cover of mist. Hours went by in relative silence, the pair of them thinking over the problem and talking about various solutions until, out of nowhere, the Captain returned and pointed off into the distance, the vague shape of a ship visible on the horizon.

"Send out a signal, Captain." Sora said softly, glancing at Sho as she spoke, face neutral despite the storm that raged beneath her eyes. As the ranking officer here, it was her duty to make the decisions, even if she wasn’t the most experienced. "Standard maritime code. Pretend to be a ship taking on water. Try to draw them near, if you can- if they flee, pursue. We have to catch them, whatever it takes." There were children aboard that ship, after all. She intended to save every last one, no matter the cost.

"Let us know when we’re close."

Shō expressed his regret for the misjudgment and together, they spent their time discussing and refining their plans. Then, to their relief, the Captain returned with good news, their target had finally arrived. A ship silhouette was visible not too far from their location in the darkness.

Both Shō and the Captain turned around and looked at Sora for a decision, given that she was the highest ranking shinobi on the board. Sora ultimately decided to lure the enemy closer. Shō hadn't faced such circumstances before and wasn't entirely sure if this was the best course of action, but he trusted his senior and had faith in her judgement.

Deep down, he was growing increasingly concerned about the possibility of making mistakes. Failure was not an option in this mission. In a typical assignment, they could retreat when things went awry, but this time, the lives of the abducted children were at stake.

The Captain was listening to Sora when she told him to send out a signal for help as if they were taking water. He wasn't sure if it was the best decision, but he was also not one to take orders well when he was the leader on the vessel itself. Sora did not have say over him on his own ship, at least in the case of an emergency... This was not an emergency, but it could quickly become one if things did not bode well. He hoped in that moment that the woman knew what she was doing.

So the man retreated and gave a quiet command to his quartermaster, and soon the ship was puffing up smoke in a pattern that was reminiscent of an SOS. The other ship that was gliding smoothly through the darkness quickly grew curious and started to move towards the Suiryu Butai ship, though it held back a bit at the precipice of being too close as if weary of an attack or ambush. The ship flew no flags, and that too could be a signal that this was their target. Though it could also mean it was just a random ship with no credentials or alliance.

"Oi! Help us!" The man from the crow's nest announced to the ship approaching, in an attempt to lure them closer or at least keep them rooted in place for the time being.

Sora didn’t waste time waiting for the other ship to close; once the captain gave the order to draw them in, she formed three hand seals, transforming her appearance slightly to better fit the bait they were setting. Her figure and face remained the same, but her clothes shifted to something far more civilian, a tight qipao of vibrant red with a low-neckline, high slits on either side, and absolutely no shinobi gear. If these really were the pirates they were looking for, a pretty woman in distress would only serve to add to the juiciness of the prize. And if they weren’t… Well, it wouldn’t be hard to explain what they were doing and ask for assistance.

"Sho." The Jounin said once her transformation was complete, sky-blue gaze calm as the other ship drew closer. "Once they get close enough, we’ll have to act fast to get aboard their ship. I’ll handle the bulk of the fighting. Just watch my back and keep an eye for those kids." Walking over to the railing as the man in the crows nest shouted, the pink-haired woman put on her best panicked face, lips parting in a loud, fearful shout as she waved towards the hesitant ship, hopefully loud and bright enough to be both heard and seen.

"Is that another ship?! Oh gods, please! HELP! WE HAVE CHILDREN ABOARD!"

Whatever metal and forging process was used in the creation of Samidare, it worked; Samidare is utterly unbreakable by most any means, capable of being engulfed in an S-Rank Jutsu and remaining unscathed. Though it is possible that the blade could potentially be broken by a sufficiently powerful attack (such as, say, a Bijuu-dama), this has never been tested, so it is not known if it would survive.

Sharper Than Your Average Blade
Due to its nature as an unbreakable blade, Samidare bears a cutting edge that is of particular note, which allows it to slice through even steel with little in the way of resistance, so long as the proper force is applied. Additionally, this edge never needs to be resharpened, as it never grows dull or rolls, thus making it perfect for frontline combat.

Light as Spring Rain
Perhaps a quirk of its forging (or perhaps an intentional feature), Samidare is considerably lighter than a blade its size and length ought to be; while this would normally result in a less effective weapon, Samidare loses none of its integrity or cutting power, as it is somehow able to leverage the same amount of force through less mass. This lightness allows the user to swing the weapon about with much greater speed for the same amount of physical exertion.

Chakra Conduction
Being Chakra Conductive, Samidare is capable of channeling all types of Chakra for use in Bukijustu, and, more particularly, it has a slight affinity for Raiton chakra thanks to Sora’s constant use of the blade for that purpose. This affinity does not do anything of real note, but it does feel as if the blade were more eager to drink in Raiton Chakra than other types.

Shō promptly followed Sora's lead as the approaching ship drew near. He used a simple transformation technique with three hand seals, morphing himself into a child to match the scenario Sora had initiated. "Well, somebody had to be the kid, right?" he remarked, showcasing his new appearance without the weapons and the backpack he was carrying until a moment ago.

The transformation bore a striking resemblance to his actual self, as it was merely the kid version of himself. The Henge no Jutsu required continual mental focus to maintain, and it was considerably easier when the transformation was something he was familiar with, in this case, himself.

Once he had double checked the transformation's accuracy, Shō nodded in response to Sora's instructions, "Affirmative." before joining Sora in their performance. "Help! Help! We are over here!" he cried out, flailing his little arms in the air, hoping that the enemy, if they were, would let their guards down since they were just women and children. While he may not have been a good actor, acting as his younger self wasn't all that difficult. All he had to do was channel a bit of childishness.

Don't be fooled by his act though, Shō was fully prepared for whatever the next step might be, whether it involved covering Sora's back during any potential confrontation or locating and safeguarding the kidnapped children.

As Sora shouted the words that they had children on board, the ship suddenly started to move faster. As if spurred on by the idea that there might be children on board... Were they coming to help or were there ulterior motives? The two shinobi already likely knew what the answer was. The ship turned, not bow to bow but rather it was heading straight for them now, aiming to split them in half and without some kind of super strength, no one was going to be stopping the ship anytime soon.

The duo was now facing a bit of a dilemma. By having attracted the ship, they had also attracted their clear aggression. And the Captain was a bit of a sitting duck, he couldn't *make* their ship go from nothing having been stationary this whole time. But he did not wait for Sora's approval in this case, he simply commanded his whole crew to start moving the ship so that the back end can take the brunt of the attack. A part of the ship that could actually sustain this kind of damage whereas in the moment they were about to take on damage that would totally destroy them.
