It had been at least a day since Kuzunoha had made her daring escape from her ancestral home. She had never really been around Cha no Kuni, the country that she had called home for most of her life. She had never, in a million years, expected that her sister Mujina would come to her rescue in her darkest hour. It was something that she was still coming to grips with. 

She had a complicated set of feelings about it. Mujina had to have been biding her time, looking for the perfect moment to save her. But could have come earlier? Mother was dead, and Mujina once again wasn't able to save her. But that was also kind of selfish, wasn't it? Kuzunoha didn't save her from whatever got to her, either. She was a puppeteer, not a doctor. 

They needed to get out of the country, and fast. The Go Estate was long behind them, but it was still going to be some time before they'd leave the country behind them. From what she remembered, Hi no Kuni was the only nation with a land border to Cha no Kuni, so if they wanted to avoid that for whatever reason, they'd need to hire a boat. Mujina was positive that she had somewhere the two of them could stay, far away from Uncle Sakana. 

But, looking at this land that she had never really been to, now in small village she didn't recognize, Kuzunoha felt a certain kind of sadness. She couldn't cry about it, but she was restless. She needed space from Mujina, so she was wandering the village, her family sword in tow.

Tea Country, a sweet little add on to Hi no Kuni. Great for when you needed tea and some fish or other things concerned with boats and the ocean. However, it also had a very specific brand of sake. One which Kayaku had introduced Jirou to back when they had first visited the mysterious mountain sake man. The devout man with his untamable inky black hair and tanned skin ambled about the village, until he found it, the small shop. [break][break]

He would leave with three more bottles than he really needed or had the intention of buying, but... Hey, booze of this quality was hard to come buy. It hit hard, hit fast, and tasted like a dream. Though... Alcohol seemed to have a lessened effect on him these days, he still greatly enjoyed the taste of it. As he exited the small shop, however, something small blocked his path and jostled the contents in his arms enough for one bottle to make its escape and Jirou almost dropped into a one legged squat to catch the bottle with his foot, a concentrated look on his face as he balanced it on the foot and was keeping a tight grip on the rest of his purchases. This was why you always put thing sin your bag before leaving... 

"Yo, klutz! Grab that before it falls, will you?"[break][break]

He ordered with a single glance cast on the dark haired girl.

Huh? 

She was so lost in thought she didn't even notice the man who was now yelling at her until he was, of course, yelling at her. She caught about "catch" and that was about it. She turned on a dime, and her hands closed around something cold and hard. Metal? 

She opened her eyes and discovered that it was not metal at all, it was glass. A bottle of... something. She didn't particularly care to read the contents. She looked up at the man who towered over her. She was short enough as it was, and yet here was this behemoth yelling at her. Kuzunoha had learned the hard way that aggressive men with physical power over you simply won't take "no" from a woman. It was detestable, is what it was. 

But her survival was paramount. She couldn't risk getting into fights in this tiny village. She needed to draw as little attention to her and Mujina as possible, before they were far and away from Cha No Kuni. 

"Sorry about that," Kuzunoha said, and resisted the urge to do her best puppy god act. That worked on Uncle Sakana all of the time. "Have a lot on my mind."

The kid seemed a bit out of it for a moment. But reacted quick enough and the bottle was not allowed to fall. Instead, she picked up up and Jirou was able to rise back up, but found that the bag in his arms and his backpack had shifted enough for it to be a bit awkward to hold and  carry.  So instead of accepting the bottle back he made for the nearest bench and put his purchases down, swung the backpack off his shoulders and lowered it to the ground. He didn't care for the girl's reasons for zoning out and being in the way.  [break][break]
"Who needs a bigger backpack? I do..."
[break][break] He mumbled in a low tone, squatting down - the scythe was allowed to rest against the edge of the bench- and undoing the straps on the pack, he would hoist out a myriad of things, mostly packages of dried meat, books and some spare clothes and a water skin. He scratched his neck, then started to rearrange his things to make room for the bottles. Eventually he was stuck with his books and water skin. And the bottle which had almost suffered a brutal fall. [break][break]
Jirou turned to look at the girl. He reached out with one hand and looked at her expectantly. "Hand it over, girl."

Man, had this guy never heard the term "travelling light"? He had enough stuff in that pack to furnish a small army! He's just one guy, what did he need all of that for? Kuzunoha wasn't really sure what a normal load of travelling equipment was, but given what Mujina had taken with her, it certainly wasn't this. 

"You got it," Kuzunoha said, and handed him the bottle. Even if he wasn't terrifying, she had no desire to keep a big bottle of whatever it was adults considered awful enough to drink. Every type of alcohol Kuzunoha had been within five feet of smelled terrible, and she was sure it would taste even worse. This guy could have it. 

She was used to getting out of the way. Living with Uncle Sakana would do that to anyone, Kuzunoha figured. She kept her distance from the man, but didn't quite leave the scene. She was more than a little curious how he was going to fit that bottle in that pack with all of the other stuff he had already put in it. Surely, there wasn't enough room for that on top of it, right?

He accepted the flask from the girl, and then... The tetris begin. He packed the bottles, they were secure and safe from breaking against anything else he had in the pack. He managed to get a lot of things packed into the bag before it was clear he was not going to be able to fit it all in. A blind man could see it. Or... Conclude it from the evidence present. With a sigh he started to stuff and stack the remaining items, his book on herbs and plants at the top of the pyramid. And then the flap was brought over, the straps for he buckles couldn't reach. Scratched the back of his head and spent a second of staring at the problem, then he plopped down on his behind and started to pulling the shoelaces from his boots as he grumbled about needing to purge his inventory for things he no longer needed. With deft fingers he pulled the shoelace through one of the eyes of the strap, securing it to the buckle, the repeated it on the other side. The two remaining shoelaces were used to tie the shoes to the bag and then he patted the top of it and rose to his bare feet. The girl still had not left. Was it that entertaining to watch a man pack his bag? Or was she lost? "Have you never heard of Stranger Danger, girl?" Jirou hauled the bag up and snaked his arms through the straps and turned to look at the girl.

Okay, so that was how you did it. It looked really complicated, and more work than Kuzunoha was honestly going to put in for a bottle of whatever. She'd just pack smarter, instead of harder. Well, when she had the luxury to be able to pack. Daruma and the sword Go were pretty much her own possessions right now. 

"Oh, if you wanted to steal me for whatever reason, you wouldn't be talking to me in the middle of a town in the middle of the day," Kuzunoha said, and grinned. "I think we can make concessions for me literally bumping into you."

Har har, stranger danger. Kuzunoha had a sword and shuriken ready to go in case another Uncle Sakana came around. She was prepared, this time. And besides, Mujina was nearby- nothing could happen to her as long as Mujina was around. Once they got to wherever Mujina said was safe, Mujina could go and look for Kotobuki, away from Kuzunoha's doomed presence...

"Besides, I'm cursed," she said. "Anyone who hangs around me for too long dies. You wouldn't want that to befall you too."

So apparently she didn't think she was worth stealing or killing, because she stuck around despite Jirou's words. Or perhaps she just had never heard that even the ones you bump into could be dangerous encounters. He could teach her a lesson on that... Or he could let her find out another time, he was in a village after all and he still had some errands to run. No sense in ruining his chances of buying a bit of food. Either way, the next words she uttered were of a much more interesting nature.[break][break]

He had been called a cursed child throughout his life, strife and misfortune followed him. But never hit him, only those around him. When he grew older he had realized it was because he was a hellspawn to deal with - as a travel partner or anything else. His adoptive father had seen his potential and understood how to direct him and his 'curse'. The years had mellowed him out a fair bit, but... He was still a rather unsavory fellow. So he scoffed at her curse. [break]

[break]"Cursed you say... Need a little more than a curse to take care of me. Just stop killing your friends and blaming it on some curse, sweetie~~"[break]

He would turn to walk on, she could follow or she could stand there and ponder his words like a fish stuck in a circle of weeds. Curses could be broken, blessings revoked, and sometimes mental shackles were the only ones holding you back from what you wanted.
