It had been a long journey, and one Toru had not particularly enjoyed. He hated people that smiled constantly, and Inei was not particularly an exception. It was as if he never stopped smiling. He wondered if he would stop smiling if Toru had stabbed him... Hard to determine. But, he decided he wasn't going to linger on it too much. The journey would have been made a lot worse if he lingered on it. So he didn't. Instead, he worked to focus on some self-meditation. Of course, he was moving and walking, but that didn't stop him from some deep self-reflection.

His conversation with Isobu seemed to deepen every day. At times it was totally shallow and just them poking fun at each other. Other times, Toru was having deep philosophical conversations with the beast. This was one of those times, he in his mind sitting cross-legged, staring up at the huge aquarium seal before him as the turtle circled on and on. Their journey was decently long after all.

It was when Toru's eyes met with their destination that he would snap out of it. Pausing and looking towards Inei. A town, and somewhere in there a businessman that they would need to touch base with so that they could get an understanding of where these crooks that they were hunting were. He could only imagine what kind of experiments were being conducted to make regular people stronger. The technology existed, Kirigakure utilized it to create monstrous creatures. But what could some amateurs truly do?

Whether he got a confirmation to continue from Inei or not, Toru would continue, pressing forward for one short last pass into the town. And then a knock upon a door. The businessman at first annoyed as he opened the door and then with realization ushering the two shinobi into his home so that he could tell them exactly what was going on.

"Oh, thank kami you're here!" He started.

"Let's get to the meat of it," Toru grumbled immediately. It took the businessman a bit by the wayside, as he was quite used to 'extra' and 'beating around the bush'.

"They're around here... In town. But, most of them are out in the forest nearby. I don't know where they hide. But they all have the same tattoo just behind their ear. It looks like a snake curling in on itself."

The information wasn't great, but it was something to go off of.

[attr="class","vpostbg"]Normally, Inei was not a fan of missions. They usually required him to play nice with others and took him away from his lab, so they weren’t his idea of a good time. But this particular mission had caught his attention.

Random troublemakers grabbing medical supplies to improve their strength? It was emphatically his brand. He had spent the entirety of the long trip thinking about how many times the idiotic people had managed to poison their own with experimenting on dosages. It made him giddy.

Though his excitement didn’t show outwardly except for his ever present smile. He was calm, ignoring the grumpy Kage that he was partnered with who kept giving him looks - when he wasn’t meditating or whatever. Inei kept himself busy with his own morbid thoughts and readying his blades.

They arrived at their destination, Inei following the little Kage’s lead to their contact. The man seemed to fumble over himself to invite them in. The Kuronmeru kept on the edges, he wasn’t a people person, despite the smile, so he’d let Toru deal with talking.

He hummed, gaze focused on the ceiling rather than the man before him. Snake tattoos. The matching body art pointed to more than just a ragtag bunch of desperates, but until he was able to see them with his own eyes, Inei couldn’t judge how cohesive the group was.

The information they were given was sparse, barely anything, but it told them that the town was their next destination. Inei rested his hands on the Kiba hilts. "Best go investigate then," he said nonchalantly, heading back to the outdoors.

He began to walk towards the town center, without waiting for Toru, eyes scanning the surroundings for anything, tattoos or odd behaviors, that would seem suspicious to his eye.

Ironically, Toru was not particularly good with people either. He was bad at talking, though he had been getting better if mostly due to the fact that he had to have a lot of meetings with leaders. Which, inevitably led him to become better at talking. Still, these sorts of missions didn't require a lot of niceties. And thus, he did not linger on them. Instead, bade the man speak and once he was done giving them as much information as possible, he would turn to his partner.

To Toru, a tattoo could mean anything. A very capable organization, a crew trying to pose as something more capable than they actually were. In truth, the duo were in for an unknown plight. Though, not something either one of them could not handle on account of being both quite capable swordsmen, and equally capable in the arts of the Oinin Butai.

So, Toru had every confidence they would walk away successfully from this.

Inei walked outside and would begin to walk toward the town center, Toru would jump to a roof and begin to cover another part of the town. He would focus on his nose for anything that smelled odd. If there was even a lick of chemical that he could sniff out, he would go there. Experiments meant blood and chemicals. Both of these things carried a peculiar smell, and with enough deduction, he would undoubtedly find someone with a tattoo.

Not as many as Inei would expect at this time of day, maybe people hiding out from the big, bad shinobi, but that just made his job all the easier. He weaved nonchalantly through the sparse crowd looking over people, giving any who made eye contact a calm smile to keep their precious nerves at ease.

Thinking back to the mission briefing, Inei remembered the list of the medicinal compounds that had been stolen. Inei was well versed on the effects those items could have on a subject's body. There were benefits to his medical training and experimentation, he had seen the effects in person numerous times. Sure, they could be beneficial to a subject's system, but if you didn't know what you were doing and gave the wrong dosage (or if you purposely gave the recipients modified doses) the effects could be quite detrimental. He had seen the effects numerous times.

So while this little group of miscreants might be getting better at dosages after the amount of time that had passed since the robbery, chances were that they had to do numerous trials and errors. Inei's plan was simple - look for anyone exhibiting symptoms and then see if they had the little tattoo or not.

Toru would weave as well, splitting off from Inei to avoid looking overly suspicious. On and on they walked, there was not a lot for them to find or capture by sight to begin with. It would never be obvious from the start, these things rarely were. For both of them though, they were likely a little more expert at finding what they needed to find. This mission would have been a great deal more difficult if it had been assigned to a few chunin.

The young man looked around, pausing for a moment. Red eyes scanning the crowd.

Then, his nose would catch onto something. Immediately he would be interested. It was a distinct smell, not like everyone else here. Not that gentle scent of earth, sweat, or mist. It was something else. Acidic.

He wouldn't immediately pursue it, but he would keep track of it as he discerned where Inei had gone. Approaching the taller male from behind he would tap him to get his attention.

"Might have something," He spoke quietly, turning around. Inei could follow, though it wasn't necessarily a requirement. But, Toru had felt that it would be a good idea if that acidic smell was indeed belonging to someone who was in possession of either chemicals, or the tattoo that the two of them be together to pursue the situation further.

[attr="class","vpostbg"]Looking for ailing people was, unsurprisingly, extremely boring and Inei was beginning to think that there were plenty of other better ways for him to spend his time. Everyone that he’d cast his eye over so far had seemed to be in moderately good health. Sure, there was the occasional person who had a cold or something similar, but he didn’t catch anyone exhibiting symptoms granted by the experimental drugs.

To fill the monotony, Inei moved to a small fruit stand and took an apple off the display, flicking a coin at the standkeep so he didn’t get accused of stealing. Though anyone dumb enough to accuse a shinobi of stealing would probably be shoved under the rug rather quickly.

He found another darkened corner with an alternate view of the town, settling in to wait out some more people he could look over and judge their behavior. He watched for a few minutes more before he noticed a small movement out of the corner of his eye, twisting slightly right before Toru tapped him on the shoulder.

The kid had found something, apparently – a possible lead. Inei tilted his head, biting into his apple and chewing slowly. Though slightly annoyed that the little Kage had managed to locate a lead before him, all he showed outwardly was a grin, blue eye glittering mirthlessly. The older man had heard of the boy’s enhanced sense of smell during his duties within the Oinin Butai. Might as well take advantage of it and put this mission to bed all the faster.

"By all means, lead the way," he said nonchalantly, taking the last few bites from his apple before tossing it to the side. Hand returning to the hilt of the Kiba, Inei followed Toru to wherever it was the kid led the duo.

Toru would nod, and then begin to lead Inei along. Turning on his heel, whilst using the ball of his foot on the other foot to make the move seamless. Turning to face away and begin to follow the scent he had tracked from this distance. It was like a trail, it almost had a visual cue to him. Though there was nothing truly visual, it felt as if he were following a string through a labyrinth. The closer they got the more the smell intensified, and the further away they got, well the dimmer it got. Thus, he knew that he was going in the right direction as the burning acidic smell got stronger and stronger until Toru had to put a hand over his nose to soften the blow of the intense scent to his nostrils. Instead, bigger breaths were taken through the mouth to avoid overloading the nasal cavity.

They were on the edge of town when Toru finally got visual confirmation of the individual. There he was, stumbling through the crowd. Sick? Perhaps. Drunk? Likely. Drunk off of some drugs... It was unfortunate he did not have enhanced vision too, they would have to get closer.

"Check if he has a tattoo on his neck," Toru told Inei, whilst he would circle around from a reasonable distance to not be spotted as suspicious. If there was a tattoo confirmation they would need to follow the man to his final destination.

[attr="class","vpostbg"]Following the small Kage allowed Inei to cast his gaze over their surroundings, marking their path and making sure that no one would be able to sneak up from the rear. Toru’s enhanced sense of smell was a handy little tool, leading the duo deeper down their labyrinthian path.

Inei’s smile grew a fraction wider as the smell of chemicals began to waft through the air, making the man inhale the familiar scent. He noticed that Toru didn’t seem to enjoy the smell as much as he did, covering his nose and breathing through his mouth. But their target was more interesting than the Kage’s olfactory sensitivity.

Stumbling around, drunk off whatever cocktail they had coursing through their system, they had no clue about their surroundings or that they were being tailed. When ordered to hop ahead and check for a tattoo on the guy, the corner of Inei’s smile quirked up a bit. He shrugged out of his flamboyant coat in a smooth movement, flopping it over Toru’s shoulder as he shifted off into a side street to use his speed to easily get a few blocks ahead of the stumbling man.

It didn’t look like there was anyone waiting to meet up, Inei didn’t notice anyone in the shadows, just the few people willing to come into these dark alleys instead of on the main roads. He swung around the corner and moved towards the guy, acting perfectly like someone minding his own business - just moving in the opposite direction. Just as he passed the guy, Inei moved into the guy, acting like he tripped over a divot in the road and nudged against the man’s shoulder.

Normally, such an act wouldn’t cause anything much more than a mumbled apology between the two parties and then going on their way. But thanks to the inebriated state the other man was in, he stumbled back much more violently, almost falling to the ground completely if not for Inei grabbing at his arm to stabilize him.

"Oh, sorry there, sir," he said in a softer tone, smile morphing into an apologetic one.

He pulled the guy to his feet, steadying him and allowing Inei to get a good look at the man’s neck and the small curled snake branded onto him. But he didn’t pause in his ministrations, allowing the drunken man to groan and mumble and push Inei’s hands off of him. The shinobi stood for a moment, giving the impression of checking to make sure the other guy was actually okay before turning back the opposite way and continuing.

With a slick move, he easily fell back into step with the Little Kage, grabbing his coat, provided the teenager hadn’t tossed it off to the side. "Our quarry has the tattoo," Inei said as he slipped his jacket on. "He’s also got so many drugs in his system that it’s practically saturating the air around him."

Chances were the man was the result of numerous experimentation attempts - a guinea pig for the group maybe. Probably addicted and heading back for another fix despite the havoc it was wreaking on him.

Toru was a bit prickled by the slack nature by which Inei dropped his coat off on Toru's shoulder. Of course, Toru's reaction was not to hold it, but rather drop it onto the ground near him and fold his arms. He wasn't here to hold anyone's belongings, if anything Inei should have come prepared and not brought the damn thing if it was going to be a potential nuisance to his movement on a more or less stealth mission. Ridiculous. The boy inhaled and at least made sure that no one stepped on the coat while he stood there. Waiting.

Inei returned in due time and would be picking up his coat from the ground instead of from Toru's hands, but it was still there at least, not lost to the whims of the city.

Inei asked what they were to do and Toru shrugged it seemed obvious.

Of course, it was possible that they were going to collide with a small sector, but they only had a bit of information to go on after all. They had to do their best and that was that.

So, he would begin to walk after the man still holding a distance.

They were on the outskirts of the town before anything interesting occurred. That is to say, the man stumbled into a hut in a forest. Toru would look towards Inei and then motioned with his head.

"Time for action," Or so he assumed as he would move into the hut itself to find it empty, but the scent of the man trailed underground and so Toru's eyes immediately went to the ground to discover a trap door.

He would force it open quietly before glancing down it was not dark down there, and he would hop inside, the room inside was empty except for the plethora of medical supplies and chemicals.

Keeping an eye on their surroundings, he followed along behind the younger boy. If the little Kage wanted to use his nose like some sort of scent-hound, then by all means, Inei was happy to let him. His hands rested near the Kiba’s, ready and waiting for a chance to tear into someone foolish enough to attack the two shinobi.

The drug-addled man they were following left the city proper and made his way out into the nearby forest. Surprisingly close to the city, but still far enough to be hidden he led them to a nondescript hut. Once the man had stumbled inside, Toru gave them a few seconds of pause before signaling to Inei and moving towards the hut.

While Inei’s hands tightened on the Kiba, he couldn’t help but feel a smidgeon of disappointment at the lack of people in the main room. There was literally no one here, not even the druggie they had been tailing. How boring.

But he hadn’t disappeared into thin air, so after a bit of searching the two of them managed to discover a trap door built into the floor of the shack. Easy to open and Inei jumped down after Toru, unsheathing the Kiba as he landed silently.

The moment his feet touched the floor, the familiar smell of chemicals hit him. Moving on quiet feet, he entered into the empty stock room to see what sort of goodies the rabble had collected.

He dragged the rounded end of his sword across the top of a pile, looking through the product they had stockpiled - impressed and intrigued at the amount and grade of drugs they had managed to acquire. The medicine and substances that surrounded them was enough to supply a small militia with enhanced performance, provided they knew how to apply the meds correctly. Inei wondered how much trial and error they had gone through already.

He hummed a curious tone, looking to Toru for a moment before moving farther into the hideout, listening for any signs of life that he could engage in.

The two shinobi would inspect the area, it was precisely what they had been looking for. Toru was content. But, they needed to acquire this, or at least some samples. There would be no way that they would be able to take everything. The hum elicited Toru's attention, the young kage inspecting Inei for a moment.

"Take whatever you think is of note," He would take a few vials, ones that smelled to him, especially potent. He would pocket them safely. But his voice had carried, of course, it had meant to carry. They had a job to do - eradicate.

"Whose there?!" Barked a deep voice.

Toru turned they were in a room, an opening but beyond that there was a corridor. Most of it was dark, but as Toru turned he could see - and now smell - a mysterious figure lumbering towards them. That's right, lumbering. Toru's reflexes and intuition told him they were in for a fight.

He was proven right when approximately ten more joined up in the corridor. Would they really fight among their most precious drugs and chemicals? Or would they try and lure them, take them up into the opening upstairs, or even moreso, take them further into this hideout? Hard to tell, but Toru lowered his stance a little bit as the largest and first of their adversaries came into proper view.

"What the fuck? Who are you?..Bah! Doesn't matter! Men! Attack!"

Toru retaliated immediately, not allowing for too much of an advantage over him and Inei. He molded his chakra to force coral to appear as spears beneath one of the men gaining speed on the two shinobi, impaling him immediately.

Inei nodded at Toru's command, mostly to himself considering he was moving away from the boy's space. He shifted the sword in his off-hand to allow him use of a couple of his fingers so he could grab at the vials and bottles that were within the containers. He recognized the labels on all of them, knowing the purpose of each and every one of them. They could be used as proof of theft and illegal experimentation down the line, but first they needed to find their culprits.

Lo and behold, the idiots came through for Inei and willingly charged into the room with them. Oh, happy day.

His smile was positively gleeful as the first few were impaled on coral spears. He twisted his swords back into their proper positioning and easily side stepped as one man aimed a punch at him. As he slid past, the Kiba came up to hook around the man's throat and with a harsh tug, separated his head from his body.

And continuing his movement, natural speed making it easy to dance around the grunts, he slit large gashes and removed limbs from those who dared neared him, easily shoving aside any rudimentary weapons they had in their hands with his superior swords. This was almost too easy for him. He skipped back from the men coming through, back towards Toru, lightning beginning to crackle around his hands.

He tilted his head at the boy, as he hooked a lightning-quick sword around another enemy's neck, silently asking the Kage what the battle plan was.

One impaled upon coral spears that Toru would retract soon after, two more fallen by Inei's sword, and another hooked by one of the lightning blades as Inei faced Toru and tilted his head. Toru was not adept in being able to tell who was shinobi trained, but it was clear that the majority - the seven left plus the leader - were not trained. He had an inkling that the man who was still trying to make his way over was perhaps the only one who was trained.

"Destroy them, destroy it all. Leave them with nothing precious that they can use." Toru already knew this would require an inevitable follow-up or two their job was to eradicate what they could the samples having been already collected he hoped just as much on Inei's side as much as his own.

Of course, it was entirely unsurprising that Isobu piped up then.

So destructive.

Hey, now! That was an accident, I told you! The beast pouted a little bit and Toru shook his head.

Give me some chakra gotta use more coral.

Toru glazed over then into a preliminary state, his eyes turned red with rings though with his control of these first stages he was able to minimize what was showing. The small space wouldn't do well with a full bijuu mode, so he tried to be a little more efficient instead.

One of the grunts was already in trying to attack Inei from behind as he held one of them by the neck, Toru created a rather impressive coral wall to protect Inei the sword the grunt used broke and the young kage would force spikes out of it impaling the man on the wall. Impaling seemed easy.

His neck course of action was to leap upon another, he let out a scream upon seeing Toru's shifted eyes before he met his bitter end...

Then, Toru got struck by something hard it sent him back, colliding against some chemical setups. The big lumbering leader was finally there and he had attacked Toru with his club. He was strong, but Toru's body protected him from too much damage as he stood up from the now bits of glass and rubble.

With a twist of his wrists, lightning crackled from Inei's hands down the length of his swords. Total destruction. He could do that.

Even as the ground and walls seemed to shudder with the footsteps of a massive man lumbering down the halls, Inei carved his way away from Toru to the supply caches off in the corners that he had yet to reach. He trusted the oyunger boy to be able to fend for himself.

He slammed one of the Kiba into another pile of supplies, lightning arcing through the jars, bottles, and packages, scorching everything beyond use. With the other, Inei dispatched another useless peon who thought he could get close. But, even as he wrought destruction, his eyes were scanning the boss man.

The big guy seemed to be the main baddie - of this outfit, at least - which was convenient for them. But, it also seemed that the big guy was also the recipient of the drug trial successes, which was not convenient for them. He was 'roided up enough that he was hitting hard enough to knock even the little Kage off his feet.

As he shattered another supply pile, the giant’s attention shifted from Toru to Inei, and when he locked eyes with the grinning shinobi, it seemed as though his anger went up about ten more notches.

Inei played into it, cocking his head in a taunting motion and drawing the gorilla away from Toru. He noted the thick veins in the man’s neck and popping out at his temples. They were throbbing at a quick pace, which meant his heart was working in overdrive - probably thanks to the drugs. Push him a little further and it could have quite the detrimental effect.

He wove chakra through his own system, feeling it wrap around through his circulatory system and force his own muscles to work harder. The monkey man was more strength than grace and Inei had little trouble slipping around the big attack. It did leave a sizable dent in the wall that he managed to strike, however. The punch probably would have knocked Inei clean out if it had connected.

"Temper, temper," he taunted with a laugh, which was responded to with a roar. "My, my, my, all that anger is terrible for your health. Your blood pressure must be soaring." He hoped Toru would be able to pick up the hint, but telling him outright would spoil the fun.

He quickly back stepped again, moving out of the immediate range of the big guy and bit into the inside of his cheek, causing thick, black blood to well up into his mouth. If the dumb ape tried to run at him again, Inei would make sure to have a few tricks up his sleeve.

Toru stood from the rubble that he had created from the impact, grumbling a little bit to himself. He was definitely not bent out of shape though. He rolled one shoulder as if he were sore, and slowly turned to face where the lumbering ape and Inei were gracefully dancing around. Well, Inei was dancing around. In this case, the man was lumbering around swinging almost aimlessly. Toru had a bit more glow to him, sending out deliberate bits of coral towards the man, he was stopping him from hitting Inei if it came a little too close.

The words his comrade spoke, it sparked something in Toru. The way the veins were bulging, well you didn't have to be a significant medical shinobi to realize that the anger of missing his attacks and the taunting was pissing him off and causing more and more issues. Which meant Toru would up the ante.

He started to manipulate the coral in his shroud towards the man, making him miss, causing more destruction in the small space they were in which was likely against what he actually wanted, the chemicals being destroyed wasn't really part of the home team's plan, Toru figured.

Toru's shroud was a bit more prominent, but still in its first stages, not quite in its wild one-tail stage.
