It was a beautiful and calm morning when Yoru returned from his mission, it was not a strenuous mission, but even so the boy wanted to give his best, Yoru is slowly walking, leaving the Mission DC.

The boy walks a few meters, distancing a little from the Mission DC, until he meets someone, someone quite familiar, his friend Wahei, upon seeing him, Yoru says:

-W-Wahei-san!

Yoru's words sounded as sweet as honey that together with a certain animation formed an amazing set, Yoru was red-cheeked, apparently from sunburn.

The boy approaches Wahei and he looked the same as always, except for a detail, in the boy's right eye there was a byakugan, when Yoru notices the byakugan, his eyes sparkle, shine like stars in the night sky, the boy looked very excited and speaks, as if shooting his words:

-W-WAHEI-SAN IS THAT A BYAKUGAN?! THAT'S COOL, SINCE YOU ONLY HAVE ONE BYAKUGAN YOU ONLY SEE IT IN 180 DEGREES RIGHT? DOES YOUR BLIND SPOT ALSO APPLY TO OTHERS? I-I HAS STUDIED A LOT AND I KNOW HE HAS A WEAKNESS, AAAAAH WAHEI-SAN YOU'RE SO COOL!!! DO YOU HAVE FULL PERIPHERAL VISION WITH YOUR BYAKUGAN?

Yoru starts jumping in excitement, waiting for an answer

"Chess Isn't Always Competitive. Chess Can Also Be Beautiful" - Queen's Gambit

Strong body. Strong Mind.

After completing his solo D-Rank mission, Wahei went straight to the DC to hand over the report, following the routine protocol. Thinking about his team and how they left in a mission without him, he decided to take a walk on the village and watch people coming and go. He was all introspective, which wasn't something regular for the boy, although he couldn't understand why he wasn't feeling that habitual joy - "I wish I could meet up the team... will you guys take long to get back?" he mentally whined and sighted while staring at a team that come across him, laughting and cheering the sucess of another mission - "What is wrong with me today?" - perhaps he was still having colateral effects from his recent experience with Greed. Nah. That was something more... emotional.

Fortunately for him, that feeling would be wiped away by the sound of his name coming from a very known and pleasant voice. - "Hey! This is... Yoru-san!?" - he startled and jumped from the bench he was in. Slightly closing his eyes for better searching - completely unaware that he had a byakugan now - he started looking into the crowd until he finally see his teammate.

With no hesitation he started running towards him getting close enough to a big and excited hug. - YORU-SAN! It's SO GREAT to see you! - his tone and expression was as if they haven't seen in a very long time, but it was actually few weeks. - Have all you guys get back? Is Boss okay? And the Sensei? Tell me everything, bro'! - I mean - E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G! - so that's what was going on... Wahei was missing his friends, albeit clueless to the very specific feeling/fact.

Nevertheless, his question would have to wait because Yoru got surprised by seen his new right-whited eye. Yoru haven't had the chance to know about the implanted byakugan - even though it was something people have been talking about, specially around the Hyuuga district. - Oh. - The boy got all excited and started to talking and talking and eventually speaking louder and louder because of the excitement and Wahei didn't have another choice but to use his hand to shut his mouth - firmly, but not aggressively - since he was starting to get people attention - Chill out, bro! - I mean - this is sorta' classified, y'know? - he looked right to left and then left to right, getting sure it was all clear, before back staring at the teammate - I'll loose your mouth but I really need you to 'hush, ok? - he had this strangely firm stare - Let's go to my place, and there I can fill you in about everything that have happened. - he waited for Yoru to nod and then he released the boy's mouth as promised - Deal?

Regardless of this phantom pain. This is my fate. This is my Destiny. It’s not the light which will guide us through the darkness, but the darkness that shall guide us through the light. Yoru even got scared when Wahei covered his mouth, a way to make Yoru contain his excitement a little, that's when the boy realized that saying that out loud could upset other people or even someone from the Hyuga clan.

Yoru gives a nod of his head, as if to say that he wouldn't talk about it any more in that place, and then the boy gently withdraws his friend's hand and speaks in a lower tone:

-O-okay W-wahei-san, s-sorry about my e-enthusiasm, I p-promise I'll keep my mouth shut!

Yoru gives a determined smile, a smile that demonstrates confidence, for being so quiet, Yoru was the kind of person who could trust the deepest secrets and the boy wouldn't say anything, his mouth was like a grave.

And then Yoru started to wait for Wahei, ready to follow him, the boy seemed a little shy and even apprehensive, appearing to have something to say, but it could wait.

Yoru sinks in thoughts, the sun was so beautiful, the weather was so pleasant, for the boy the day was perfect to play a game of shogi, one of his favorite games, for using a lot of strategy, the game may seem common, but for Yoru it was a way to show who he really was, the boy seemed really interested in those thoughts, with a sweet and genuine smile.

"Stay focused. Never avert your eyes, because if an opening arises, even our insignificant power may be enough to determine the fate of the world." - Shikamaru Nara.

'Matchmaking'.

As Yoru nodded and withdraw his hand, Wahei noted that the boy have understood his discretion, which made him breathe in relief - Nothing to apologize for, pal, just needed to be sure you understand that. But I really appreciate when you are all enthusiastic. - I mean, that's a version of you that I've never seen before. And it's awesome! - the sparkle at his looks was back on.

They walled silently towards Wahei's home and it took a certain time. Wahei's mind pushed aside everything he was on until now and he was scripting the order of the facts and what exactly he could tell to Yoru so he could understood the situation. When then finally arrived, Wahei opened the door - always unlocked - and make a gesture inviting the boy to come in - Welcome home!

Wahei went straight to the kitchen - not before pointing out the living room and a place for Yoru to rest up and get comfortable. He would notice that Wahei's home was located at the Senju district and it was a big place for a teenage to live alone. It seemed a little colder, too. Like something was missing or some kind of void - meaning solitude or loneliness.

Wahei showed up after a while with a plate with some snacks and two glasses of cold water. - Sorry, don't have anything better to offer. I never cook and always go out for meals and dishes. - he landed the plate in a short table located at the center of the room. Yoru would probably have noticed it before because in its center there was a shogi board - and the pieces weren't organized as in the begining of a match, although it seemed that no one have played it for quite long time though.

Wahei pushed the board aside gently to better set the plate, and then passing the glass of cold water to Yoru and putting the bowl of snacks right between then so both could reach it. - So... where to start..? - he said, breaking the silence - My adoptive mother was Kazuhira Ahmia, she got widow when his husband - one of the Senju heirs passed away, obviously -  and she also lost his only son, Senju Kirisame - AKA Kaito, don't ask me why - which was Shigure's teammate. Their sensei was Hyuga Natsuo, and this eye belonged to him. - Too many names, facts and links in short time and Wahei was the kind that spit out words like bullets in a heavy machinegun. - Kirisame died in the Chuunin exams - don't ask me for details because I don't have - and his sensei at the time felt responsible for not being around - he was in a mission or something - Long story short, he tried to be there for my mom and he kind of did pretty much than that. He filled the hollow in her heart with love. - Part of it, of course, because I made that too. It seems that I remind her of Kirisame somehow. But as nothing in my mom's life were exactly "happy ever after" Natsuo ended up dying too, unfortunately. - he took a deep breath, finally - Oh, did I mention that Natsuo is Shigure's uncle? - Anyway he lost one of his eyes but spare this one to my mom and entrust it to her so she could live up for their legacy and having a part of him with her to help her excelling his medical skills, all at once - he cracked a widely smiled as if he had reach his favorite part - Things went wrong when she tried to implant the eye on herself but she somehow managed to hide the eye and prepare it to me. Shigure help me out on finding it all because somehow my mom knew I would end up becoming a friend of him. Lots of tears and emotional stuff later, here I am with Natsuo spirit and my mother's legacy to achieve. - he finally get back on breathing regularly, which was kind of relieving too. - Doubts?

His finally took a large sip of the cold water who was sweating in his hand because of the difference of temperature between it and Wahei's body - thankfully he could absorb the water thanks to his suiton nature. And as simple as that, he ended the whole story as if he haven't spit out a full paint of bullets and classified facts about people that Yoru also cared and love. - That's Wahei and his lack of social skills being himself.

In a way, Yoru was amazed at Wahei's house, it was much bigger than Yoru's house he lives with his father, Yoru wondered what Wahei did with all that living space, his eyes sparkled with fascination.

Yoru goes to the living room and sits on the sofa that was there, it was a very comfortable sofa and soothed the boy, it made him more relaxed, Yoru sees Wahei approaching with some snacks and glasses of cold water, the boy takes it and thanks him with a gentle smile :

-Thank you, Wahei-san!

And then Yoru grabs some snack, eating one by one slowly while listening to Wahei, it was such a sad story, but it still inspired Yoru and probably Wahei.

When Wahei finished, Yoru was just trying to process all this, his friends went through so much that Yoru replied with a straight face:

-Damn it, Wahei-san, you must have had a hard time. I'm still processing, but I understand most of it, I may be saying something wrong, but for me the past cannot be erased, the past gives strength to the present to change the future, it may seem strange, but somehow my hearing it all gave me inspiration, determination! To fight more and more, to protect you guys, to stay strong, hahaha, sorry, I've already said too much.

'Missing links'.

Wahei cracked a smile to Yoru when he said that his story have motivated him more - Well, it's nice to know that it get you excited. First steps to a better world is motivating the ones around you. - he nodded convinced that being able to sparkle hope in one's heart meant that he was indeed in the right track.

Accidentally he happened to hit the table with his knee making a bottle fall and spill over the board - Shoot! - Wahei rarely made mistakes or got involved in accidents like that. It seems he was still a little tired from his last mission after all. - Sorry. Let me clean this out.

He quickly raise the bottle up and ran to the kitchen and get back with a dishcloth to dry the table, shogi board and its pieces. - Fortunately it won't get wracked by the water - after all Wahei could dry it in by using his chakra to absorve it using Water Release. After it got all cleaned up, he start organizing the board again.

Before the accident, Yoru would've noticed that the pieces wasn't in right place, but positioned in the middle of the board like if someone was playing but interrupted the match for some reason. - Wow. It's been a while since I don't play this thing. Mom taught me when I was a little kid but she got busy at work and we never played anymore. I still remember this night when she got called and we had to quit playing. That was the last time we played. When she passed away I decided to leave the board as it was when we played for the last time. Somehow I feel like that she could one day get back to play with me again. But now I ruined this... I have no chance but to put it back in order. - he gasped, little angry because of his mistake, but still smiling as Wahei always used to do.

Of all his colleagues and acquaintances, Wahei was the one that caught Yoru's attention the most because the boy also wanted to be more like Wahei, Yoru found it curious the way Wahei dealt with everything, always with a smile sketched on his face. face, he smiled regardless of external factors, smiled when he was frustrated, when he was afraid, but it was not the time for Yoru to think about these things, after all, that was not why the boy went to Wahei's house.

Wahei accidentally knocks a bottle off the table, Yoru is a little startled by Wahei's reaction, who looked more like a runaway train trying to clean up the mess he caused, Yoru quickly realizes that the water has fallen on a Shogi board.

Shogi managed to extract 100% from Yoru, who was always thinking about more and more strategy, that's where the boy could show his true personality, Yoru felt a little surprised by Wahei's request, who replies:

-I-I can teach you, it would be great to have more people t-to play with! Shogi is my favorite game, but where do you want to start from the basics of the basics or just how to place the pieces? Well, it may seem like a difficult game, but I'm sure you can do it, Shogi is basically Japanese Chess so it's pretty quick to get the hang of it.

"In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.” - Art of War: Sun Tzu.

First to go.

Yoru wasn't exactly the talkative kind of person and all that introspection was something very confusing for Wahei. No only for his shyness but for the whole absence of details about what he was thinking or how he was feeling was something that Wahei simply couldn't understand - although he always looked to the bright side of this: learning opportunity.

After all he had said Wahei unconsciously expected little more of his teammate reaction, since by looking at his dark eyes he could only met a tiny sparkle of compassion. Of course Wahei knew that Yoru was a good friend, that he worries about him as much as he cared about him too, but sometimes he get this feeling that perhaps some of natural beings were simply "less human" than he was - as a synthetic being.

These things get Wahei all thoughtful for a moment until Yoru finally said something about Shogi. Wahei jumped from the boy to the board in the table. - Oh!? - He got confused, but perhaps Yoru was trying in his own way to establish a communication with him by making him remember a good time he had with his mom - Yeah! - I mean - As I said, my mom taught me the rules. Which basically is the movement of each peace and their original position on the board. - he added, trying to summarize what he could remember of the game since there's been a long time since his last match - I'm not very good tho. 'Mum used to kick my ass each time we played - he shrugged slightly, realizing that he never cared about winning or loosing but the treasury of that unique moments he had with her.

Anyway! - he snapped out of his memories getting back to reality - Sure! - I mean - Why not? - he added - Perhaps you can teach me how to excel my playing into a hardcore level like my old lady' once did, eh? - he cracked a smile, position the board in the table so they could get more comfortable to play it, getting one piece of each side and shuffling it at his back with his hands and afterwards showing both of them clenched, obviously hiding which hand had each piece - Shall we begin? Choose one and let's see who's gonna move first. Left or right? - with an unusual true neutral face, he was looking to Yoru expecting his decision so he could reveal it and see who'd ending up doing the first move.

"From the very moment we're thrown into this world, we're fated to bring each other nothing but pain, suffering and misery. Yoru felt a certain relief to see Wahei immersed in thoughts, it reminded him too much of himself, Yoru thought so much but couldn't reproduce it in words, the boy always had this problem, but it didn't bother him so much, he even liked his more introverted way , allowed the boy to think more clearly, he had time alone and without realizing Yoru was also immersed in thoughts, he had his own little world.

Yoru laughs when he hears Wahei saying that he always lost to his mother, the way the boy spoke was the trigger for Yoru to have that kind of reaction and he says:

-Hihihihi! Wahei-san, it's normal! Every time I lost to my dad I tried to see what I was doing wrong and so far it hasn't worked, that's why i haven't won any yet!

Yoru felt happy to share this, it was a good time between the two, Yoru felt the boys' friendship bloom more and more, after all Wahei was one of the first friends that Yoru made, so Yoru wanted to fight for this friendship, deep inside he didn't want to lose Wahei.

Yoru looks at Wahei with curiosity, the boy already wanted to know about Shogi's tactics, even though he only knows the basics, the boy responds with a smile:

-W-well, let's start this g-game, if you lose I can tell you what you a-are doing wrong and teach you the defensive plays, which we call the castle, which are the defensive plays to protect the "king".

It was time to choose, Yoru's gaze quickly changes, his eyes are more relaxed, as if he was analyzing until which hand to choose, left or right? Most people choose right, but with Wahei's neutral face it could be on either hand, the boy decides to take a chance and says:

-Left.

"The art of war is of vital importance [...] It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.”
Art of War: Sun Tzu.

Shogi means war.

Yoru choose the left hand and when Wahei opened it, the black piece was revealed. - Nice call, mate! - Wahei exclaimed enthusiastically. The genin then put the pieces back in its place. Coincidentally the black pieces was already in front of Yoru so they didn't had to turn the board. - 'kay, you go first! - he told with a very friendly expression, while awaiting for Yoru to make his move.

Giving space to Yoru to get his time and think about his game-strategy, Wahei remained in silence moving his head down staring at the board. Memories of his last matches automatically started to pop in his mind in sequencial loops of games he had played, moves that he could make. Eventually he jumped thinking what kind of player Yoru were and what type of game he would start playing this time.

Lots of considerations made, Wahei's eyes unwillingly jumped from the board to Yoru and from Yoru back to the board. Not in a pressure way tho, simply like someone who was taking game seriously and emerging on what was about to come for him - and reading the opponent was a natural part of it, as Yoru probably should know.

"Crush him - with no mercy" - a voice coming from the back of his mind said. It was Pride. - "You guys should've put some money on table, then you'll have a good reason to crush him down like a cockroach" - Greed added after hearing Pride's comment - "Guys! - Back off. It's just a game" - "There's no 'simple game' when competition is on table, especially with Shogi" - "What'd you mean, Wrath?" - "Shogi means war" - "Boys and their egos... you're so predictable." - Lust whined in a "rolling-eyes" tone, clearly bored and upset.

Startling from his "insights", Wahei wondered how many time has passed, but he was still staring at the board and it seems that Yoru has decided on which start move to make. Wahei felt a drop of sweat roll through his temper, while he discretely clean it with the back of his arm, he waited to see through what was about to come - "I don't think Yoru is going to take easy on me, but he is a kind person, not a competitive one. Since I'm not a pro he'd probably not come with it all on me, but I can't simply underestimate him - I'd might expect the contrary, perhaps." - he thought - "I must wait and see what's coming" - and concluded, with a casual smile on his face. Perhaps their fragments were right: there's no such thing as simple game between to sharp-minded.

"From the very moment we're thrown into this world, we're fated to bring each other nothing but pain, suffering and misery. I was also blindly obsessed with a trivial and irrational need for vengeance. But I was left behind. Alone. Forgotten. Abandoned. Forsaken. But now, the fog has been truly lifted. Yoru feels a certain relief in getting the boy's piece right, but soon the boy thinks: "It's a two-team knife, although I start the game the odds of winning with black pieces were less than the probability of winning with white pieces, at the moment I just need to think of a strategy, a mino castle? As a distraction, maybe turn it into an anaguma castle, making him focus on defending this castle while the pieces on the other side of the board keep advancing silently, a little bit of me want him to realize it."

The boy's expression quickly changes, he had a strange smile on his face, as if he was enjoying the game just before it started, he also couldn't contain his enthusiasm waiting for Wahei's moves, so the Nara decides to act.

It was a simple move, which would cause an "opening" that the boy could deal with during the game, Yoru takes the right pawn at the end of the board, which is on the g line, he moves to the f line, because in the formation used by him only the g and i lines would be immobile, the boy turns his gaze to Wahei, with an innocent smile he says:

-Your turn, Wahei-san!

Intellect.

Yoru made his first moves, and Wahei followed his perspective of game right away through. The time passed and they have played a few matches, but the results were always the same. Yoru had more experience in the game and evidently was better than Wahei in coming up with strategies. He was also more intelligent and Wahei got really amused by the boy's intellect - Wow. I knew you were a swellhead but you're really in another level, huh? - the boys kept playing for quite time, changing few words but his actual communicating were made through the board, in each move they make.

In spite of being a shy person, Yoru revealed an aggressive nature in his playing style and that called Wahei's attention. As the games passed by, Wahei also learned some move plays and got Yoru by surprise too. After all, he was a mednin and had a lot of intellect too, and was also smart to learn from his mistakes and use it against Yoru in the upcoming matches. But for the boy's surprise, Yoru was pretty good at defensive too. - Okay, that's it. You're a genius! - he said, after another loss - Your mental skill are considerably far from mine. - he admitted, but with no hard feelings and actually with a very proudly tone in his voice, summed to his habitual friendly smile. - Shall we go again? - he provoked with a confident tone, as if he was the one winning the matches so far.

One can never run from its ghosts. And that’s exactly all that I am. A lost memory. An undying shadow, in this world of light. From now on, I’ll have to live up to this semi-charmed kind of life. Regardless of this phantom pain. This is my fate. This is my Destiny. It’s not the light which will guide us through the darkness, but the darkness that shall guide us through the light. Never forget. Always remember."

Instead of getting discouraged with each victory, Yoru became more and more determined and even impressed with how Wahei managed to evolve in such a short time, the boy seemed impressed with Yoru's intellect, he smiles and says:

"Hahahah! Wahei-san, I'm just a simple 13-year-old boy."

A joke to break the mood, in Yoru's mind that sounded funnier, so they went back to playing, as they were playing Wahei they would realize that Yoru was risking more and more, using the king aggressively, as if it were a Shogi piece that didn't need protection, the Nara looks deep into Wahei's eyes and says:

"Well, if the king doesn't move his subordinates won't follow him! Hahaha!"

Once again Wahei seemed impressed with the young genius, Wahei was right, the boy couldn't think of an answer for that moment, he smiles and thinks a little about the answer and then he answers him:

"Well, you're right hahahahah! My IQ is at least 180 i guess, but to me it doesn't really matter, you're a genius too, Wahei-san! I'm also very impressed by your intellect, you evolved a lot in a short period of time!"

Yoru's words were sincere and sweet, Wahei was a great friend and opponent too, he made Yoru think more and more and the Nara liked that, Wahei wanted to play again but Yoru wanted something harder so he asks:

"How about we play a mental game?"

"Shogi-time! War of the sharp-minded".
"The beauty of chess is it can be whatever you want it to be. It transcends language, age, race, religion, politics, gender, and socioeconomic background. Whatever your circumstances, anyone can enjoy a good fight to the death over the chess board.”
Simon Williams.

Mental-battle.

The two boys were having a very good time together. Wahei chuckled when Yoru mentioned his age and revealed his to him too - Age is something relative. - he said naturally, but later realizing that Yoru wasn't aware of his secrets yet, so he decided to let it go for the moment. Wahei could feel the weight in his head since every match against Yoru was really something challenging for his intellect. Even so he was still dedicated to at least make the boy struggle to beat him.

When Yoru mentioned that a standing king wasn't worthy to be followed, Wahei looked at his eyes and understood it into the deeper meaning. He nodded and smiled back, friendly.

After another match, Yoru revealed that his IQ was something around 180 - Impossible! It got be large more than that. I think mine is something around 165~ and you're beating the hell out of me here! - he shouted contestating the number, but shortly after getting all thoughtful because he wasn't exactly sure of his number but knew it was something close to that at least. Eventually he shrugged and started another match, walking to another defeat.

- Oh - C'mon! - he whined, but right after chuckling again - Perhaps I should have Boss here to help me. It probably take the two of us to have a chance with you, 'brainiac'! - he messed with Yoru, but keeping a friendly sportsman tone. In the end, it sounded like a compliment - and that's exactly how it meant to be.

Then Yoru proposed to test their intellect in a more advanced level. He asked Wahei for a mental game. Wahei had never heard that expression before, but it was pretty clear what that meant: playing the game without pieces or board, but by memory. It will take a lot of effort from his part, but he knew that it was not something impossible for him. - Wow! - he said, truly impressed by the bold challenging - It seems to be tough! But sure, why not? Perhaps I'll need your help, tho! - he cracked a smile, feeling the pressure - Since it was your idea, your should go first - he closed his eyes and crossed his legs, starting to concentrating and trying to mentally visualize the board.

"From the very moment we're thrown into this world, we're fated to bring each other nothing but pain, suffering and misery. "age is something relative", Yoru didn't understand the value of those words, maybe the boy was referring to mental age or even worse, for a moment the Nara looked somehow open-mouthed, he directs his vision to Wahei and asks:

"Wahei-san, damn I thought you were about my age, HOW OLD ARE YOU?!"

Soon after it was Wahei who seemed impressed, the boy laughs at his friend's reaction, really Yoru's IQ was at least greater than 180, making him a young genius, Yoru loved to play with Wahei, with each victory of the Nara the friend looked more and more further evolve, he smiles and replies Wahei:

"Hahahahah! You just need more experience, Wahei-san! Although I want a 2v1 match, it would be interesting besides I like the pressure imposed by something difficult, it makes me think a lot more, hahaha!"

Wahei seemed to accept the challenge imposed by the young Nara and then it was his turn to start, the boy takes the glass he recently drank water and puts it on the sole of his foot, trying to balance it, this would be great for him to improve his chakra control, he concentrates some Chakra in the palm of his hand too and balances himself on the ceiling, starting to make his moves, the Nara would now play with everything, with his eyes closed he speaks the position of the pieces he want, making a Yagura castle.
