Motivation to do Good
"It hardly seems like you have come to any sort of decision in what you wish to do...so...why ask me now to do this"

It had only been a few days ago, but the memory of her meeting within the Compound of the Takehara, standing before the elders of their small clan as they seemed to be directing her or attempting to, place her with a task to which they wanted her personal opinion upon. At times, while these meetings would usually begin and end with a circular conversation that would not cease to end without debate, they did allow for the mild satisfaction of at least one member addressing her and asking for her to take more responsibilities in furthering the Clan's endeavors in a more politically influential role....

If only they knew what she did....

What they saw before them was a woman, still younger than them by all grace and mercy of the gods, whom was recognized for her service, washed out and eventually took on the role as the Head medic within the village. It was a far better fate than the last person who took on the ideals of Takehara Yomi, to which, still was held up as a standard for many within their clan, and to others, the reason why their clan preferred the role of anything that didn't require a blade sharper than their tongues.

It made them a chatty bunch...and often the sight for some great amusement now and then.

Though the situation seemed to be that of one of their younger members, Takehara Momo.

The monster....or freak as most liked to consider the girl...

Her parentage consisted of marriage to a woman with a condition that was so rare, it was of no shock that many in her family had managed to keep it hidden for so long. But, of course, for the good of the clan, her father had married her as it was willed by the elders. Of course, as most stories went, the two fell in love and their union was more than just a bargain.

It was only a shame that things such as fairy tale endings and the journey of two people overcoming hardships rarely ever went the way they wanted....

The history spoke for itself...and it made it clear that there was still much more in store for the two upon becoming parents.

Momo had been a plump little thing...and her screams had made Aiya remember the very reason why she never had children of her own....not for any lack of trying on part of her lovers. But the joy of the parents in seeing their young one seemed to shift to horror upon realizing the truth of their baby.

It was indeed...an affliction of genetics gone wrong...but then...most information when it came to the Onigo Clan was lost to time, and perhaps it was believed that such a curse would no longer plague their world. Still, it honestly would have helped had she known more...or perhaps...if she had said something....

Aiya had been there through the entire process...but...as a medic...she was sworn to secrecy...and it was the one thing she managed to keep that she was indeed ashamed of to a certain degree...in truth...it was likely that reason that the woman had been labeled a monster herself in the end...and paid a price that had been meant for her daughter.

It didn't take a true shinobi to look into details..and in fact...it honestly could have easily gone either way...but who would many rather have take the blame for murder?

Naturally, the incident and execution of Momo's mother had been so heavy that the clan was once again placed in a barely glamorous light, some even hoping that her father would simply do away with the child. Of course, when gifted within a clan of silver tongues, the one with the best reasoning often prevailed. Not to mention the most that influence, which he had at time....

So came lies, the cover ups, and most of it in attempts to try and save face for their clan. Though there was no hiding the one thing that made the girl different, and Aiya had no prescription to cure it...she had tried...more than once...having only drugs now to help to ease the savage nature that lingered within.

Lack of motivation....that was what the Clan believed was the reason for her lack luster performance in her shinobi career, and her display at the exams only gave evidence to the line of excuses.

She remembered them even placing the blame on her for that stunt, to which, she had no defense...or rather not one that would leave with Momo's future in tact with what remained of it.

In the end, a part of Aiya did feel responsible...and she had been there for the most part...

So them coming to her now to ask her to do something else felt rather like a last resort of what she had already been doing.

But then...whom else could they ask?

-----------------------------

The meeting ended briefly after that, and Aiya had simply been observing the child, mostly from afar...Though as the time came for their usual appointment, Aiya would wait at her usual place for their meetings, her hand holding an umbrella within it as she came outside. Her eyes would linger to the sky, seeing the rain drops fall along the side of the building, eyes closing as she took them upon her face before then opening her gaze to view the road.

The tired Oni couldn't help feeling a subtle peace in the constant rhythm rain made against her umbrella. She'd left early to meet up with the head medic, Aiya was certainly no stranger to Momo. Which was a stranger thing for most Takehara, as the girls father didn't want to much exposure. She was a bit hard of learning sometimes, she needed to be two long blinks from sleep. She couldn't risk going rogue again, there'd been enough sacrifice.

There shouldn't of been any, she'd catch herself in the reflection of a puddle. There'd been a split in the traffic of people walking, it'd been to largely avoid the strange horned girl. After all the chuunin hadn't been paying anyone else mind, she moved to her target at a slow waltz. She'd left early enough she even knew she had the time to stop, but that didn't mean she wanted to. As looking back up at her was the monster who burdened so many. Even Aiya was on that list of disappointments.

Upset the girls brow would frown, as her eyes glimmered with the tears of frustration. She'd take a heavy sniff to compose herself, then aggressively stomp throw the puddle and pick up her pace again. The new passion in her step, she'd in fact not enjoy her breakable time. No accidentally naps this time, but instead arrive in clear view of the head medic. The higher ranked shinobi would be the first to notice the other. Momo wasn't looking too far ahead of herself, she kept her eyes out for feet, as to avoid meeting eyes. That feeling of being challenged, it unsettled and almost always angered her. Especially unwanted shared glares.

If the older Takehara didn't call out to the chuunin, then the goat would trot up and only stop upon seeing the familiar feet. Her eyes closing and when opened would be locked up at face level with her sometimes sensei. "H-Hi-i A-Aiya..." She'd state in a very quiet tone then bashfully look away from the other woman. Fluttering eyes as she'd shift from looking at the jounin to looking anywhere but the next blink. She'd feign a smile similar to the look a dog gives when seeking forgiveness.

"Ah...Momo...where are you looking? To the future or the past?

Aiya would allow the girl to continue her movement, seeing her gaze shifted slightly down as if she were watching her feet rather than the path in which she was headed. Was it shame? Perhaps...there was much in which she imagined the girl had to feel bad about, much of which she held no claim. But often people made such things about regrets or perhaps the things that could not be changed. Even she had her many regrets...and short comings that were no fault of her own. But then, everyone did. There was no real special way of dealing with failures or disappointments that were outside of the realm of control. There was only moving forward....and perhaps...if able...learning in some form from them...

When she finally reached her, she'd see her face looking up at her at least, prompting the dark haired female would smile as she leaned her umbrella in the young woman's directly, blocking the rain from hitting her any longer.

"Hello Momo...I'm glad to see you've arrived...and on time...very good..."

She knew that she was treating her like a child, but it was hard not to when you found yourself so closely entwined with someone. Still, she was not here to baby her, she was an adult now. Meaning that some responsibilities had to be met.

"I thought today..we would go and find the supplies needed for your medication...you do recall the herbs needed yes?"

It was a small quiz, but the girl had been at this long enough to know what she was ingesting. Not to mention that her own medical knowledge was indeed quite adept. Perhaps it was more than just a test of her memory, but opening to something far more.

Once she answered, the older female would then release a breath before then straightening her posture before pressing on.

"Well then...we best get started...and do be sure to look ahead dear...there is no point in looking downward...all you see then is just your feet and where you have already been left upon them..."

Looking upward, Aiya would then blink as she tilted her head to the side for a brief moment.

"Or something like that...I am certain one of the Clan Elders tripped and broke their neck that way...best not to take the chance..."

"...r-righht." Momo didn't know if the remark was to highlight her past mistakes or if this was genuine praise. She'd always have that slight uncertainty, her mistakes were rarely intentional. So she could never tell when they happened the type of lasting impression it'd leave on people. She'd sworn she improved, but she knew she was by no means perfect. Agree, stay engaged and don't let it get to you. An internal pep talk she'd give herself.

"Of course!" An easy question got an easy answer. She'd quickly follow though with a softly spoken and very descript list of each ingredient and it's necessary measurement for her medicine. Her hands seeming to gesture how each ingredient was processed or extracted. As though she'd relatively put the whole process to muscle memory. She didn't quite get the stress relief making medicine as she did through archery, but it was still something that had a more positive feel to it.

Unlike explaining her own expertise and something she found an interest in, the attempt to lift Momo's spirits would fall softly on deaf ears. She'd blush anxious about being called out, so she'd simply nod her head in acceptance. The whole trip going forward she'd try to keep her head up, but it felt so hard to do in the streets of Amegakure. A cold sweat hitting her, but thankfully hidden by the cities rain. She didn't know her thoughts on this tale of man who slipped looking at his feet, she felt pretty confident in her footing especially when she was watching where she was stepping.

'...Surely, this is backwards?..' She'd think to herself, as her eyes slowly drifted in whatever direction seemed to have the least eyes peering back. The chuunin knew where she stood and had an idea of where they'd be going, so she physically was by no means lost. However with eyes widen open and constantly shifting gaze she couldn't help looking as though lost among the people.

The woman was doing her best to help build the girl's confidence, though it was a process that would take some time. Years likely in Momo's case. Of course, that didn't mean that she couldn't give her a few nudges now and then. There certainly would be a time when she wouldn't be there to do so. A time that was becoming more and more apparent as she looked at the woman she had become.

"How long has it been since you've graduated? Time seems to fly so swiftly...I often question just where it went..."

Her smile remained as she continue to hold the umbrella over the two, continuing her steps forward toward their destination as she continued to speak.

"You are growing into yourself now...many question just what you will do..."

It was more of a concept of self-reflection for the Chunin, especially now that she was officially able to take on operations on her own and would likely need to do some on her own as well. This was a gift of independence to some, but Aiya did worry if the girl could handle it.

Despite her defense of Momo in her actions at the exams, she did have reservations.

Who would come out first in the child's ongoing battle with her demons?

It'd been about seven years since she'd graduated from the academy. That certainly felt like a while ago, but it definitely didn't seem to warrant what was spoken next. Momo wasn't sure if she was supposed to reply to this question, it was rhetorical right? She'd of paused to let her answer right? Momo didn't want to fail her teachers expectations and ignore her, so swallowing the embarrassment of likely being wrong. The chuunin would choose to answer perhaps a few seconds off key. "S-Seven years."

"That's not that long ago..." She'd decide to put in her own feelings, but immediately felt it might of been a rude statement. She didn't want the ire of anyone, but instead of asking. She'd merely start looking over to the older Takehara, as to glance at her face and look for a reaction. A good jounin could hide it, she'd never know how frustrated the other shinobi was with her. A sick sensation of uneasiness swept over her. She wondered if she could make things better or when she'd be making them worst.

Growing into you? A strange statement, but she didn't know what it meant. Was it a phrase she simply didn't fully grasp or was she actually referring to the things Momo knew of herself. The hidden bloodline which made her a threat to those around her. The possibility she might snap. Were they wondering what she'd do, as in when she'd slip up? Maybe there was more optimism than she gave herself credit. Then again they were going to get more ingredients for her medicine. Perhaps the jounin observed some miss behavior and plans to change the medicines consistency. Make it strong or make it have another pacifying effect.

She swore she'd been good maybe she was forgetting. "I'm going to do good." Those were the words of comfort she could form, it was her rebuttal to those who'd not believe. She didn't quite believe in herself, but she knew this needed to be answer. If only she spoke it more confidently or perhaps worded it more intelligently. She felt like such a fool, especially among the other Takehara. Even if Aiya had always been nice, but most acted nice in the face of others. She always felt so concerned when someone told her about another person in private.

"Ah...a noble goal...but what does doing good look like to you?"

Moment Music

To do good was indeed a concept that was loosely thrown about by many. It was often to the point where it lost all meaning to some. Doing good could be simply being out of the way to doing something that one themselves considered to be along the same lines. Aiya hope was that the girl had some general idea of what it was that she wished to accomplish in such a goal.

"Your medical training is far from complete...but it shows promise...and you are not so far removed from those your age that you can not practice such methods in the field...you have opportunities and you are making the most of them I hope..."

In saying this, she'd stop as she turned to look at Momo, her expression calm as she continued.

"Seven years may not appear long...but to those that stand still, it is a lifetime...I do wish to see you become like that...not when you have so much to offer...understand?"

That said, the older female would glance to the side as she began to realize how she sounded, prompting her to release a breath.

"There are many that are waiting for you to fail...do not give them reason to consider it..."

She'd hoped being optimistic in a sense for once would just be the answer. However her sensei would callout the goatshit spued from her mouth, as she'd be asked to define what good meant. Momo knew a direct and relatively prompt answer would be expected, if she could only speak in more than a stutter. "I-uh-h... Would say I'll -uh be a better medical shinobi a-and..." She wanted to cry or scream as her face turned red with embarrassment.

She was an adult now, at least she had their responsibilities. She wanted, no needed, to prove her worth and talent as a shinobi. To do good, her eyes glanced over to her sensei. Flustered and perhaps a bit panicked, she'd feel the answer and let it surface. Her words pained, but impactful. "And I won't sully the Takehara name." It was enough she'd ruined her mothers reputation, but there was more than just avoiding trouble.

The Takehara were of an intelligence that often pushed the villages now innovation, it was perhaps an expectation of wit which haunted the chuunin most. She didn't have that kind of keen mind, she had to study the note for three times length it seemed. Even then everyone else spoke it with such fluidity. She'd hear it from a distance or when they thought she was completely a snooze. There was those who thought her thick and dimwitted, those who mocked her mannerisms and endless list of oddities.

She'd get smart, be smart. It didn't matter how long the reading took or how hard the knowledge was at sticking. She'd learn it and be a good Takehara. Her lower lip trembled, but she'd bite it momentarily and calm her nerves. "Of course, Aiya-sensei! I won't let your efforts go to waste, or your service unrewarded. I promise, Aiya-sensei." Momo would respond to the higher ranked shinobi, her hand rising over her heart. As she'd look towards her sensei more so than the rest of their walk.

The closer they'd get to any sort of ingredient the farther they'd be from public. Ultimately the more relaxed and at peace the soft spoken goat would become. She had only a couple people like her father and Aiya who she felt comfortable around in her clan. The majority she worried were just trying to get her to say something dumb and poke fun of her for it.

"I believe that would be a sign that you have much to consider in your goals...I do not envy you that...."

Aiya would look toward Momo with a calm expression, though it seemed like it was a lot to be left for the girl to consider on her own. She wasn't a child, there was no point in pushing a lecture point into her head now. This was something she would have to figure out on her own. It had less to do with what she showed her and more to do with just what she did with it. In the end, she had to trust the girl would do the right thing, by her own merits.

"I will leave it at this....do what is right for you....not for others...understand that not everyone's definition of what is good can be considered right....not even mine at times...."

With that said, she'd then stop as she then grinned as she gestured toward her.

"But I am happy to hear you promise none the less....now...do you recall what we need?

It wasn't simply gathering various herbs to create the medicine in which the girl needed. It took careful examination and understanding of the effects each one carried. Some were very poisonous in large doses, while others had effects that lingered for days if given in small amounts.

"I will leave it to you to decide the herbs this time...we have done it numerous times so I imagine that the list has been held at heart....so where shall we begin?"

Momo couldn't fully understand what her sensei was explaining. There were just things her youth, drugging and experiences had walled off common sense. Her life was spared so she could have a life, but there wasn't away she couldn't think it wasn't undeserved. She had a huge debt to repay, to her father first off, but more so to her mother. She didn't know how to achieve that on her own, to her there was no self prevailing goal to reach such means. No, she'd have to do something for others, she'd have to make sure their actions weren't in vain.

Takehara could be quite the cutthroat individuals, they were clever beyond most peoples measure. She always felt behind around them, but Aiya was still kind to her. Whatever relation her father and her aunt had, it was something Momo couldn't help being relentlessly thankful. Unlike her archery instructor, Aiya hadn't moved on and was with her now. So whether it was the woman's desire, Momo wanted to include them in those she helped. Those who she owed a great debt and one she'd pay with her life if necessary.

Thankfully for Momo, the lecturing ended and instead they'd refocus on their little goal right now. A self imposed mission to gather the supplies for her own medicine. Momo had become quite knowledgeable in all things herbology, but nothing was more known to her than her own medicine. To her it was the life blood of her safe existence among the other shinobi, it kept her from being the monster she knew she could be. "Of course!" Momo would state before, then listing off all the things they'd need to harvest. Immediately followed by her explaining how they'd treat each ingredient and what exactly they were extracting from one or another.

It was all quite textbook to her, but the actual position of the ingredients had some level of change. The cityscape of Amegakure was not a breeding ground for all that was needed. In fact unless a few local shops or the hospital had what she needed, then there was only one ingredient 'within' Amegakure itself they could acquire. "We'll first gather the Mogi Mushroom, it's fairly common to grow on Amegakure's bridge to the main land. There's also a small under cave nearby the way out, but the waters pretty high, so we'd probably be best checking the bridge and if not there waiting for low tide to enter." Momo would explain her ideology, as they'd get to the exit gate of the village. Calmly going through the security with the entering and exit procedures memorized. Her seal for access being presented without being asked. Continuing to more or less avoid eye contact with the guards, before they'd be let out of the village gate.

With their task is clearly stated, it appeared that the Mogi mushroom was the girl's prime objective for the moment. Which, was for the best considering the identified rising of water and the need for an alternative next to a trip into the caves. Moving beside the girl, Aiya would have no issue with presenting her access pass to leave, though she'd still manage to notice the glances given to the girl by the guards in passing.

The trek to where they needed to go would take some time with the rain, but traversing such terrain was a simple matter for those that knew the way, along with being used to such elements.

Yet as they came to a crossroads, the older female would stop for a moment as she looked out toward one of the ruined structures, closing her eyes as she took a deep breath and then did a silent prayer. Upon finishing, she'd soon continue to follow Momo in their path toward the bridge.

The cooling rain would seem to create a mist of steam as it hit the ground, leaving a vapor trail in passing with the combination of heat between the air and the two travelers.

Yet before long, their destination would appear to be close at hand...

Exiting the village and crossing the bridge out was no short stride. A bridge was a pretty clear landmark to remove any hidden nature, but the shelter of raging waters and only one clear point of entry made all that unnecessary. Though this bridge was large it felt skinny in comparison to the waves, especially closer to the halfway point of the bridge. It was pretty common for Momo to check the bridges under belly.

She had a decent idea of where the cultivations would be, but that was an uncomforting thought. It wasn't till they got a bit over a third of the bridge, it'd be here Momo felt she'd last gathered. Well just a tiny bit back, so it'd be under here that they'd find the fungi. Starring off at the waters which rose and clashed endlessly in either direction, Momo couldn't help feeling a shiver down her spine. It wasn't any type of fear, but a knowledge of what to expect. In the due diligence of properly harvesting the best cultivations, she'd need to be under the bridge a minute at best.

Momo was pretty skilled, but she wasn't that skilled. So most likely there'd be a bit under there, a more than likely enough time to be splashed. The water was certainly going to be cold, so the shiver was pre-emptive and her memory just filling in the blank. "I think there should be some at this point, we'll be lucky to avoid a bit of splashing. If you want I can go alone, we shouldn't need too much anyways." Momo would explain as she'd walk over to the edge peering down the bridges side. There wasn't anything she couldn't she could confirm from this point or angle, but she definitely saw the highest waves struck the bridges support beams and splashed up to hit the bridges underbelly inconsistently.

Assisted or not the chuunin would activate her tree climbing and proceed under the bridge, it'd seem the water was assisting the fungi growth or something. As the support basin to the bridge was the only spot inhabited with the shroom. She'd head over reluctantly and attempt to crawl over to the target. Using a kunai and holding her bag open under the bridge, she'd scrape off specific spots of the mushrooms attempting to leave enough they'd recultivate and spread back over what she was chipping off.

"Very well...be sure to mind the waves..."

With this acknowledgement, Aiya would watch as the girl set forth to complete her task. Though in truth, she imagined that something so relative would require little effort on her part, simply careful cultivation. After all, a resource was not something that could be simply plucked up if one were to return to it for a renewed source. But the process could be considered tedious for some. But, someone who knew the value of the material would be mindful of how it was taken.

To which, Momo did. As she began using her training, along with her knowledge, the older female would watch from the side, her umbrella remaining over her head as she mindfully looked on. It was an interesting exercise to say the least, but she would do well to be sure that the girl was not skimping over completing it.

Perhaps the Elders were indeed over exceeding in their need for observation of the young woman, but in the end, it was the least she could do to watch her progress.

In an attempt to get more than a batches worth of ingredients, as well as to not steal too many fungi from one cluster. The goat wanting to prove herself to the beam of the bridge. Ever closer to the water, she'd keep alert to move the bag she was collecting with. However she'd fail to give herself the room to successfully dodge the waves to come. She attempted to shift upwards as a big one suddenly splashed upward, her back and head almost completely engulfed in the oceans strike. Her lower extremities and her arms which held the bag to the highest point remained dry.

She had enough after that experience and more than a batches worth of the mushroom. This now felt unnecessary of her to impress her sensei. Walking back around from under the bridge to on top, her hair would go from dangling under her to now slapping against her back. It was completely drenched in frigid water, so the girl would visibly shiver. As she'd show off her hopefully still impressive results. The girls face couldn't hide the discomfort of the water trickling down her spine.

"S-Sss-O!" She'd shutter regaining her composure. "The next ingredient we'll get from a path shortly off the beaten path from the bridge. A deer path not man made, there's quite the hidden." *Achoo!* A violent sneeze followed by a slight sniffle, broke up her plan before she continued. ".. quite hidden gem location for our next ingredient. I think their uh-leavings are great fertilizer for the plant." She'd attempt her best to flex her enhanced knowledge of this topic to her sensei. As all medical shinobi knew there was an endless amount of knowledge in the medical field. As new diseases, medicines and such are discovered daily, just knowing each individual ingredients background was rare. Often meaning the requirement of specialist. Her medicine was a staple for her survival in society, so she needed to be a specialist of it.

"Oh dear..."

Aiya would cup her hand beneath her face, watching the girl struggle a bit with collecting the materials she desired. If she had been much of a mother hen, she might have rushed over and cuddled the girl, but there was little time for such things in this world and she was no mother. Still, it was clear that this was meant to display a level of competence in a field that Momo desired to follow through on, and it was no short of impressive that she managed to keep a clear head, be it a now dampened one.

"Well done...though for future reference..."

Tilting her head to the side, the woman would pause for a moment before then releasing a soft breath as she watched the girl shiver before removing her kimono and using it much like a towel as she gently began to dry the girl's head.

"It would be best to use the current and a stick...while not the more professional means of gather resources...in elements such as this...nature often provides us with alternatives to get what we need..."

As she finished, she'd allow the robe to settle upon the girl's shoulders, her expression calm as she replaced the umbrella over their heads. The garments around the woman were no more than bandages, along with the markers of her time in service of the village. The scars were deep, but they clearly held the impact of what remained upon her soul. In the end, these were a part of her, much like the horns that rested on that of the young woman before her.

"Now then...lead on to the next..."
