It was another out in the massive metal fortress that was Kinoishi but this for something bit less simplistic then stopping a protest today she was taking out another teacherless tyke to get some work done. For some reason Takara really liked saddling her with guard duty, she and another shinobi by the name of Rin were to make their way to the villages to clean out some of the chimneys that were used to vent some of the smoke from out of the homes of some of the residents of the city.

The city itself was already warm but there came times where even that wasn’t enough and sometimes heat needed to be produced another way and so chimneys were installed in some of the homes on the upper floor of the third level of Kinoishi and it was there job to make sure they got cleaned out before it began to pollute the place.

As the two trekked in the snow to get to their destination getting out of the chariot that brought them there. Taki would emerge wearing a cloak that covered her body. "So paint brush…dis your foist time in Kinoishi?” the girl would say looking back at her as they made their way out and towards the entrance towards the city. "Hope ya like metal.” she’d say as their made their way towards the door. "Okada welcome back!” Taki would wave up towards the guards.

"Howzit goin!” "You here to clean out the chimney’s?” he’d ask. "Yep I even brought my own paint brush.” she’d say gesturing to Rin. "Welcome!” the girl would state smiling to him. After greeting the guards she'd make her way towards the doors waiting for them to open revealing the large metallic city and its famous backdraft that accompanied it from the heat as the gates opened. Inside were a series of large brutalist designed metallic structures looking much like the village itself but still unique in it's own way.

leaning chimney’s didn’t at all sound like a thrilling activity. It sounded like a tedious time waster one would give to a child. So I’m some ways Rin could understand why she had been so needlessly burdened with such an arduous task. But even the most monotonous of chores can be made fun with the right companionship, and surely that was the goal of those who made decisions for Rin, because they had certainly chosen an interesting character to chaperone. However, the unfortunate downside of this partnership for Rin quickly became apparent to the young, impressionable shinobi.

    Her partner was absolutely insufferable.

    From the moment Rin had entered the chariot, until the doors had blessedly been opened to the drab entrance of Kinoishi, Rin had simply smiled and nodded any time the girl spoke to her, plastering her cheery smile and wide eyes on. A mask the girl had taught herself to paint to perfection not explicitly for situations like this, but which worked in the moment none the less. Her hood pulled up high. A jacket she often used to try and look devilish and get people to walk away and leave her be, but had the unfortunate effect of often making the girl looking even more childish than her stature already made her.

     So when she was introduced to the nickname "paintbrush”, it was needless to say that she was already rather done with the interaction. But this wasn’t a confrontation the girl felt the mental fortitude to carry on with, and as such she simply shook her head in response, her eyes still pointed towards the entrance. Rin couldn’t say she had any thoughts positive or negative towards metal. In some ways it seemed like it wouldn’t be conductive to her artwork, and in that way it seemed pointless to her. Especially in the way this city used it. Large mechanizations and dreadfully dull buildings made this a rather pointless exposure to the girl. But she had to trust the process, she had to believe that this was for her benefit as a shinobi, that it would make her stronger in the future. No matter how unlikely that seemed in the moment.

As the two of them made their way inside the city was bustling with towns folk all moving about and going on with their business, the change in temperature was almost immediately evident upon heading inside. "Man, I swear it looks like dis place gets bigga everytime I come ere…” she’d stop and look down at the young companion. "Welome to Kinoishi paintbrush.” she’d say walking forward sticking close to the younger girl with how crowded the streets of this place can get it was easy to get lost in here.

If they looked around they’d see all sorts of people from simple merchants to oddly enough tourists the obvious shinobi and some rather shady individuals standing on the streets dawning red headbands. "Our job today, just in case ya forgot was ta clean some chimney’s out on da thoid floor.” she’d say looking back at em.

"C’mon elavatayta to get dere is dis way.” as they kept moving Rin might notice large silo’s that have small metal piping leading out of them and head upwards towards the ceiling, these are coal power plants that seem to be a constant source of debate amongst some of the individuals within the city itself.

eeing how large this place truly was, it was a rather intriguing development. Of course Iwagakure itself was massive, but this was a new kind of vast that the girl was eager to explore. Barely even listening to Taki shed only hear the location they were heading to. The third floor didn’t feel too far from their current positions. The girl was always prepared. Being called paintbrush was rather frustrating, but she did have some actual paintbrushes on her, as well as her family’s ink, and the scrolls she needed to make them work. She wondered if they were going to come into use on a mission like this.

     Rin marveled at the Silos as they passed, this place was certainly different to the village, to rather modest housing. Sure they had technology, industry, but not to this same scale. To the point that Rin wasn’t entirely sure what Taki meant when she said elevator. Rin had never been on one before, in fact she wasn’t sure if she’d ever seen one. Maybe it would strike her memory the moment she saw it, but the more they wandered through this industrial palace the more foreign it all seemed to her. And by the time they arrived at the elevator Rin was fully aware that it was something she hadn’t stepped foot on before.

     When walking up to it she simply stopped in front of the door and looked towards the other shinobi. Unsure of how a small room was going to take them anywhere else in this place. She started to look around for where the stairs were.

As the two made it to the door, Taki would hit a button and allow the two of them to enter inside and as they headed up to the third floor Rin would seem a bit confused, Iwagakure wasn’t exactly known for having a need for elevators like Kinoishi so they weren’t too widely seen within their home so she understood her confusion but also wondered just why the hell this kid was so quiet was there something wrong with her? Was that why they asked Taki to come along was she maybe a shinobi who needed extra attention? These were questions her mother had told her not to ask people and just accept them no matter who they were so she kept it to herself for now.

"You ain’t neva been on an elevayta bafore?” she’d say looking towards the smaller girl. "Don’t worry it’ll get us to where we need ta go.” she’d say with a smile on her face. As they made their way up however Taki would notice some strange men standing outside the elevator. "And then once we’re there we’ll get to work with what we have to…” as the two shinobi stood there they’d peer over at them seeing that it was going up instead of down like they’d like and then opt to wait it out as others came on board, Taki would notice however that they wore those same strange red headbands as the others.

"Wats dere deal…” she’d think to herself. After a short while they’d make it to the third floor where they were greeted with the biting cold one again and homes that actively had chimney’s atop them unlike the homes on the first and second floor. Taki had never been up here before and there was something oddly nice about it, the clouds looked a tad overcast but Taki couldn’t tell if that was from an impending snow storm or the smoke in the sky from the chimneys and silo’s. As the biting cold came at them again Taki would take out a small piece of paper that had the addresses of the houses they needed to clean. "A’ight c’mon brushy let’s get movin, foist house is dat a way.”

hat was the purpose of this compartment? Why use this instead of just, stairs? "People in Kinoishi must be really lazy.” The first words that had left Rin’s mouth since she met Taki. She wasn’t entirely sure why she let those be the first words. Maybe she just wanted to break the ice, crack a joke. Maybe Taki would grow less irritating if the two could find some common ground. They were gonna be stuck working together for quite awhile after all. But in reality Rin just couldn’t help but comment on something she felt was so tedious. It would have been better to walk up there anyways.

     Rin hadn’t really put much thought into all the red headbands. They were hard to miss, but the girl figured it was just some sort of uniform. No reason to pay much attention to them. Instead the girl would do what she usually did when she had time to kill, doodle. Much different than the jutsu her family could create, this was a pencil drawing, simply crafting the scene they had just walked through. Remembering the details she could, she would draw the silos, the elevator. She’d put in what details seemed most distinguishing to her, so special care usually fell on the mechanical aspects.

     The cold itself was grating, but having her hood up like she always did definitely made it easier to deal with at the beginning. But the smoke, that was something the girl would need to get used to. Already coughing as she stepped out of the elevator.

As the small girl made her comment about how the people of Kinoish must be lazy given everything that they needed to go through Taki would look down at the young girl. "Eyy, the people o Kinoishi ain’t lazy, maybe a little on da dummy side but dey coitenly ain't lazy.” as the elevator would come to a stop and the cold would hit the girl once again. "We've been hiya'd ta do a job, and dats exactly what we're gonna do." she’d say adjusting her jacket it sure was a good thing she chose to wear ana actual pair of jeans instead of the usual Leotard and Fishnet combo that stuff did not hold up well in the cold.

As they arrived at the offices of the individuals who requested the job be done. "Yo…we’re here for our supplies.” Taki would ask she’d be directed towards a small area in the back. "There you two are we were told you were coming by a shinobi envoy, there’s quite a few of them that need cleaning.” she’d be handed a map of the route they needed to take. "Here you are…do you need a ladder I know that most shinobi normally have their own way of maneuvering themselves, but you never know.” Taki would look over at it, smiling since she already knew that she came prepared. "No thanks I’ve got my own.” that statement raised a brow at the girls comment. "C’mon paintbrush let’s get moving.”

Afterwards Taki would leave the establishment and head to the first stop on their route Taki would look up at the ceiling of the building and would summon her ladder into her free hand and set it next to the building, along with her tools. "Use that to head up the ladder, I’ll see ya up dere.” With that Taki would make her way up using the wall walking technique doing her best not to slip once she made it up to the top and would start stuffing the chimney brush down into the ladder careful not to look directly into it as not too get any dust in her face.

in had never been a fan of the cold. It was something that was fairly easy to avoid in Iwagakure for the most part, but here it was constant. Even inside the buildings you could see the signs of the cold outside. The windows still frosted, the wind still howling, and the general blue tint that filled the outside. Something about the cold just made things worse. Not least of which being Rin’s mood. Her patience for the rather grating personality of her senior shinobi wearing thin. Today was certainly going to be a trying experience if her experience so far was anything to go off of. 

     Their tools didn’t seem all that complicated. Hopefully the introduction of actual brushes would stop Taki from referring to her as a paintbrush. She had so many clan mates, was paint brush really a unique name? It seemed easy to use that phrase to refer to anyone in the family at all. Arriving at the actual task for the day would hopefully do the same. They had work ahead of them, there was no reason to keep up with these dumb names and jokes. "Why couldn’t we do this somewhere warmer?” 

     The girl mused openly, not really looking for a response, just speaking to break the monotony. The introduction of the ladder seemed to complicate things. Carrying everything up there seemed rather frustrating. It seemed like it be a lot easier to walk up there using the simplistic jutsu she already knew. Some simple scribbles on a notepad and a series of stepping stones appeared before her, leading up to the roof. Jumping from stone to stone, not out of necessity but mostly just out of boredom, she would get to the rooftop about as quickly as Taki did, all of her stones fading behind her as she went. "So, is there anything to this other than just shoving the brush in there”

As the girl made it up to the top with her instruments in hand the girl would make her way towards the chimney before hearing the girl carl out to her about going somewhere warmer. "Quit ya gripin’ is dat what we got paid to do.” she’d say chasting her and she turned her back. "Our jhab is ta make sure dat we get dhese clean regardless o sitchiation.” the girl would say to her small companion. "Sides I kinda like da cold builds characta.” with that she’d take her chimney brush and prepare to pass it inside of the chimney but would hear the girl ask her if there was more to it than just what they were doing.

Taki would look back at her. "Uhh…kinda...I think...uhh...” Taki would wonder about that for a moment she kinda jumped the gun just a little bit she had a general idea but nothing concrete. After a moment however someone would come up from another side on a different ladder. "There you are…you ran before I could ask.” the man seemed rather tired as if he'd been running for a good minute.

"Do you know how to clean a chimney…?” Taki would look the older mustached gentlemen. "Uhh…yeah you gotta shove da brush in dere and scrape off awl da soot?” the man would guffaw at the girl. "Well yes, but here allow me to give you a refresher.” Taki would then gesture to the young girl. "Yo come check this out.”

For about 20 minutes the man in question would explain to the shinobi just exactly how the process of cleaning a chimney would work, taking the rod placing it in and what to check for and other things they would need. "Awright…piece o cake!” the girl would say. "We’ve got this one taken care of but your route has about 6 to take of think you can handle it.” the man would state. "No sweat.” after a moment the girl would craft a hand seal and create 4 shadow clones.

"Shadow Clone Jhutsu.” she’d look to the clones who stood before her standing as the spitting image of her. "Awright you guys head to da odda routes and me and paintbrush'll take on da other 2 togetha, ya stuff is by da stairs.” the clones would nod to her, and would take the supplies that she had placed for them before heading off.

"C’mon paintbrush let’s get too it!” she'd say ready to tackle the next one.

in hadn’t intended to sound like she was complaining. She was just trying to cut through the silence. She guessed she could understand how it came of as whiny though. But still, the girls quick and snippy reaction seemed to just make Rin confirm even more that she had no real interest in talking with this girl. It was, in most ways, just quite grating to deal with someone who talked like this. Especially when they were so quick to jump on something that Rin thought had clearly been a joke.

     The only thing more annoying than listening to Taki make assumptions. Was watching a man explain how to clean a chimney for twenty minutes. It was absolutely ridiculous that it needed to be so tediously explained, but the bright side was that it was twenty minutes where Taki was actually quiet. Rin would cherish the seconds before it was time to get to work, and she’d be handed the comically large brush used to clean them. 

     Seeing Taki create shadow clones had also been rather interesting. She knew what the words meant, she’d heard the basics, that these clones had an actual physical form, much stronger than the generic clones that Rin had the ability to make. Having more of Taki seemed like a massive benefit to the missions if not Rin’s sanity. It meant they’d be done much faster, and she could get out of this cold much sooner. Hell, maybe they’d be done in just a couple dozen minutes.

With Taki’s clone having been created Taki would head off with the young girl towards the furthest rooftop and upon landing would get to work. Taki would remove the cap on the chimney on the first home whilst pointing towards the next chimney beside her as a way of silently asking the young genin to get to work. Afterwards she'd begin her duties taking the brush for the chimney and lowering her supplies down into it and vigorously brushing back and forth.

The process was messy and as she kept scraping a little bit of soot to make its way out of the chimney forcing the girl to turn her head away from the thing, but not wanting to complain she’d simply grumble to herself as she did her best to get the job done, however as she did this she’d do her best to make sure that her little helper was also doing her part.

"Paintbrush I don’t here any sweepin ova dere…everythin alright, having fun ova dere?” the girl would say as she looked over at the young Genin whilst her boots crunched in the snow whilst she had kept pumping the chimney, meanwhile the other Taki’s were also getting the same work done and at the rate they were going they’d be finished in no time so long as they kept up the pace but that was only if a certain someone would pull their weight.

aki’s idea of using the clones was one that Rin was analyzing closely. It was certainly making things go quicker, and it also meant less work for the older shinobi. Rin wondered if she could do even less work than that however, and the clones seemed like the best idea. Rin didn’t have shadow clones, her amalgamations were much less impressive. The clones that Rin could make were much less resilient than the ones Taki was using, but she did however think this didn’t exactly constitute combat. They would probably be fine if the work wasn’t all that strenuous, which this didn’t seem to be. 

     By the time that Rin would hear Taki calling over to her, she would have already made a small doodle of herself and used the Boku Sōsa: Kopī, making an inky copy of herself that was more than enough to hold a broom and sweep a chimney. Which mean that the girl herself would be simply sitting down in the snow with her sketch book in front of her.

      Despite her issue with the weather of this city, the place did seem pretty enough, and Rin decided this would be a wonderful opportunity to practice her drawing capabilities. Even trying to paint Taki into the scene in front of her. However when Taki had decided to look over, Rin certainly wasn’t looking her direction, instead looking out towards the other houses in the area, holding her book out to see if she was getting the scale correct. "Oh yeah this stuff is just riveting Taki-san. Time of my life.”

As Taki looked over in her direction she'd see an inky clone getting to work whilst Rin herself would simply sit on the ground and draw adding in a smart-alecky comment. "Okay you wanna be smart I'm dispursin one'a my clones and da REAL you has to take care of it, go on, get you little basta'd and don't you DARE use a clone." as she said those words the other Taki clones would work tirelessly to make sure they got each chimney taken care of in record time, with so many clones it was short work that got done in an equally short order and would've been even faster if somebody hadn't decided to be a smartass.

As their work came to a close thanks to the help of the clones and Rin finally buckling down the chimney sweep who had helped them out with instruction would come towards the girls. "Excellently done ladies.” the man would say as he marveled over their work from a distance. "Eyy, its awl in a days woik.” the young Blonde would reply looking down at the kid. "Itn'd dat right paintbrush.” she’d say smiling to the kid a bit of menace in her smile knowing the kid was probably exhausted from learning their lesson.

"Now c'mon let's get outta ere its freezin up ere.” she say heading off the rooftop and down the elevator to the first floor it wasn't the cleanest job but hey somebody had to do it. Upon hitting the ground floor, the girl would make her way to the stables and the two would spend the night in the nearest town before heading back in the morning all in all job well done.

 noticeable groan escaped from Rin’s lips as she was stirred away from her drawing and towards the unfortunate task of cleaning out the chimneys of this ice cold place. Quite literally ice cold, that’s how the snow had formed after all. For Rin that was just a quite annoying fact of being forced out onto a mission like this. Always doing something menial. The girl desired something more than busy work like this but it never seemed to come her way. She had even heard quite a lot about a girl like Taki, how she had had many of the opportunities for real combat that Rin so clearly desire. 

Still though, Rin didn’t want to get others involved in her issues, and she simply smiled through the annoying situation, "yes ma’am,” the girl beamed the words out with a large grin before marching over to the chimney that was now empty. Picking up a large brush and going about the tedious task of clearing the ash and soot. "You’d think with all the mechanical marvels this place seems to have there’d be a way to make this process automatic. A self cleaning chimney. Someone should patent it.” 

When the job was done, and the large man appeared to praise them for a hard days work, Rin would simply smile and nod at Taki’s comments, following along on their way out of the village.
