THE SECRET IS NOT TO DREAM

Another day, another class—in her years aboveground, Risa had fallen into the comfortable monotony of school life, every day another adventure to embark upon with classmates that she was tentatively becoming confident enough to call friends. Well, some of them, anyway. She was fairly sure that Tota and Dansui liked her well enough, but Hatohara was still a big mystery, and the pale, sickly-looking Kuronmeru boy didn’t seem like anyone at all.

Still, it had been heaps of fun so far! Every day there was something new to learn, and even when Risa was bad at something, people were there to encourage her to keep trying until she was a little less bad at most things. She knew almost all of the fundamental ninjutsu techniques now, and had even picked up a neat little dodging trick that was really helping her kick some serious butt in spars. It kinda felt like graduation should be on the horizon, what with the way she and her classmates had been progressing… but at the thought of taking final exams, her palms prickled with nervous sweat.

Risa had been a little late getting out the door on this particular morning, so she barreled into the classroom with her books haphazardly tucked under one arm and a half-chewed piece of toast crammed into her mouth, and scrambling to take her seat.

"Did we have any homework???” she asked the room at large, panic seeping into her voice as she rifled through her papers. "I don’t remember if I did any homework???

It had been a request placed by the head of the academy and one of the council members. That Toru should make a more official appearance in the academy as an actual instructor. Or at least as a lecturer. Toru had a better idea, just use the first half of the class or first quarter to lecture and the second to treat everyone to a training. They would learn or at least perfect what they had been working on with him so that they could be one step closer to being full-fledged shinobi. But, being an academy student was usually a lot more innocent than being a shinobi. So, unsurprisingly Toru's lecture was going to be about the realities of just that - being a shinobi. Perhaps they had heard it a million times, but today would be quite a scary lesson in some regard.

If getting lectured by your emperor wasn't scary enough.

The Mizukage arrived just as the bell rattled and rang for the class. He was not very tall, and his stature was unlikely much greater than the majority of the students seated in the classroom.

"Today, Mizukage-sama Kaguya Toru will be giving everyone here a lecture. Please give him your attention." The homeroom sensei announced before Toru stepped to the center, in front of the blackboard, and in front of the desk that was in the center at the bottom of the tilted classroom shaped like a mini-lecture hall with plenty of windows.

"Hello..." He wasn't much of a talker, so to say the very least he was definitely out of his comfort zone. But if he was, well he certainly didn't show it. "The first part will be a lecture. Then, you will all stand and we will go to the training ground. I will personally oversee your practice."

Kuronmeru Yosei Avatar

Yosei was a lot of things as a person, the first being that he was someone who definitely stood out in a crowd. The boys pale skin was a trademark sign that anyone with just a cursory knowledge of the Kuronmeru clan would recognize, matching with his wild black hair. Then to stand out even more, he more often than not could be found wearing sleeveless shirts, and he could always be found with his bright crimson red bandana around his neck. It was clear from the get-go the boy was not averse to attention.

The second thing he was would be that he had something of a disgusting personality, even if it wasn't necessarily hostile. In fact, the boy almost always had a smile on his face and a rather easy going approach to things, a near unheard of rarity in the Kuronmeru clan. But there was more to the boys relaxed smile, a smugness, arrogance as if everyone was lesser than the boy, constantly having a while not outright hostile still rather flippant attitude towards anyone who wasn't a Kuronmeru, or at least anyone the boy hadn't deemed strong enough to deserve some form of properness.

And yet, the boy didn't go out of his way to say as much outloud as many Kuronmeru did, instead the boy just coming off as a easy going person if you didn't read between the lines. If you didn't notice that when he spoke to you, his interest in you wasn't as if he was interested in the well-being of you as a person, but instead how one might ask their pet how their day was after coming home. And it was with this tone, this attitude that the perpetually smiling boy would speak with as he entered the classroom. Forgetting something? It wasn't an answer to his fellow classmates question, instead he simply kept up his smile to the dark skinned girl, Risa, and shrugged. The pale skinned boy seemed content to watch the show for now. He didn't actually know the girl beyond being classmates, and that she generally seemed upbeat. Though this wasn't abnormal for him or a mark against Risa, instead it was just how things were, after all her blood was lesser than his.

Bur he couldn't keep up this flippancy with their guest when classes did begin, when the Mizukage entered. The boys eyes went wide, his smile replaced with a look of surprise. This was definitely not a normal day like he'd thought it'd be, and this wasn't someone he could just brush off as lesser. Their Mizukage, their lord, the most powerful person in the village. His clan elders might try to downplay the Mizukage, might try to claim the Kuronmeru were still mightier. Yet, these same elders were the ones who had tried to convince him of how they'd made Kirigakure better than it had ever been, while all around him were destroyed buildings from the Sanbis wrath. His clan was caught in a paradox, but he could see clearly. He could see that the Mizukage wasn't the Mizukage because the Kuronmeru allowed it, but because he'd taken the title. And as the young, white haired man said he was going to start off with a lecture, the usually relaxed boy was listening with rapt attention. And as for the lesson, well. He'd definitely show their lord that the Kuronmeru, while maybe not equal to him, were still the mightiest clan in the village.

[attr="class","koan"]Nōmu took his seat quietly, counting the pencil stabs on his desk that had gathered over the years. He had always been quite careful to take care of other people’s property, but that didn’t seem to be the case with previous students at the academy.

A pale finger reached out, scrubbing hard against the wood to attempt to rid the desk of various marks. His eyes lazily stared downward, and Nōmu yawned.

A voice would sound, it was that of Taneda Risa. He felt his heart flutter with anxiety. He knew the answer to her question but answering required effort.

More recently than not, Nōmu had been trying to become more confident. It was failing miserably, but here he sat as he swallowed his cowardice…at least this once.

"We had an essay…remember…?,” Nōmu said, though his voice was low and mumbly. If someone wasn’t paying full attention, he would simply sound as though he were talking to himself. He’d stare back down at his desk, his black eyes flickering over to Risa to see whether or not she had actually heard him. His cousin, Yosei, also entered, making his usual remarks. The two were quite opposite in terms of personality.

At that time, a young but authoritative figure entered the room just as the bell rang. Nōmu knew the silhouette of the man if only by respect alone. The boy would sit quietly, his hollow eyes watching the Mizukage’s presence closely. Power emanated from him, and even Nōmu could sense his incredible strength as he entered the room.

Nōmu managed to mutter a "Hello,” in response to the Mizukage. While it was hidden beneath pale skin and grey sagged eyes, Nōmu was truly quite excited for the surprise lecture they were getting today. The fact that the Mizukage would be overseeing their training was a treat, and one he would not soon forget.

LITTLE TOTA

Tota's head laid on its side, resting upon the hard wooden slab of his desk. He struggled to keep his tired eyes open as he passively listened to the other academy student's discussions among themselves. The boy was exhausted from his usual dawn training session; his muscles ached and flared like fire. Only an hour earlier he was running laps around the academy with a sandbag in his hands, training his strength and endurance. Now all he could do is slump over his table, and try to remain conscious for his classes.

When the older Risa entered the room, Tota perked up with a big grin on his face. His posture straightened immediately with a new found energy as he begun waving them over. Tota had recently started to bond with the awkward shark girl of the academy - something that was kind of a joke to his peers; however Tota didn't care. "Over here, Risa" Tota exclaimed.

He watched the girl staggering to her seat with a large amount of books in hand. Her first question surprised the boy - he always believed she was a nerd; who made sure to be ahead of her academy studies. Maybe he'd gotten that wrong about her. It wasn't long before the class started and their sensei introduced today's guest speaking. Tota watched on as the child kage, Toru entered the room. 'Good morning, Kage-sama." Tota quietly voiced in unison with the rest of the class.

As Toru exclaimed to the class that they'd be heading outside for training, Tota groaned. He slowly made his way onto his feet, feeling his leg muscles sting with each moment. The boy gave Risa a look of sheer agony as he fought through the pain.

Before the bell sounded, the class was humming with conversation and laughter as students trickled in. Nothing unusual occurred. A blue-haired and blue-eyed girl named An was making her way toward a vacant seat before she had completely awakened. With all of her schoolwork and the books she had recently acquired from the library, her backpack felt a little heavy. She was not accustomed to this classroom. Not her regular peers either, as today was a little unique. The Mizukage himself was scheduled to give a guest lecture and train the aspiring shinobis. Students were brought together from various classrooms and grade levels.

An took a seat, set her backpack on the ground, and pulled out a few notebooks and writing utensils, putting them neatly on her desk. Her blue marbles scanned the crowd in the hopes of running into someone she knew. There were a lot of intriguing people in the class who she thought would be fun to get to know if the opportunity arose, but none of them were someone she already knew. Nōmu and a few others. She exhaled with relief when she saw she wasn't the sole student from her class, and a timid smile broke out on her drowsy face.

As the bell rang, the sliding doors opened wide, and an older male, one of the teachers, and a boy, not much older than the rest of the students in the classroom, Mizukage, entered. The teacher gave a brief introduction before introducing the main character of the day. "Hello," she responded to the authoritative voice as best she could, along with the rest of the class.

Today's agenda included a lecture and a practical lesson. That sounds like fun! An enjoyed both learning theories and moving her body.

"Many of you here," Toru would begin with a quiet and slow cadence. He had the voice of a very boring lecturer, not one for a great deal of emotions, if any at all. Toru was an even-headed boy, and it showed now as he took his spot in the middle of the classroom. All eyes on him, he did not show a hint of the nerves he felt. Though, this was most certainly a great deal more difficult than assassination work, he knew how to steady himself and if he did not - what kind of assassin would he have been.

"Are trying to become shinobi, at least, I hope that is your purpose for being here in the academy. The curriculum has been set up here to allow you to succeed as shinobi, we have the finest curriculum in the world." Whether that was true or not was irrelevant, Toru had met with the finest academics in the nation to sit this curriculum up, he wanted future shinobi to succeed and for genin to have a lower death rate when faced with *real* challenges.

"Many of have you seen the horrors and triumphs of being a shinobi, but doubtfully you have felt those same horrors and triumphs." There was a pause, his rusted gaze moved over the heads in the classroom.

"What does it mean to be a shinobi?" He waited for a raise of hands, he would pick someone to speak.

The young female shinobi was thinking after hearing Mizukage's speech and question. According to the history she had read in the books required for the Academy's curriculum, Mizu no Kuni, and especially the Kirigakure, had been through many turbulent years. She was raised in the safety of her home on Kibishī Yokubō no Shima, one of many populated islands in Mizu no Kuni that had not been affected by any major incident at the time that she was growing. However, she had many schoolmates who had suffered or seen the horrors that shinobis had to go through.

An had no idea what it took to be a shinobi; her main motivation at the time was not to disappoint her family; she wanted to make her family proud by becoming an excellent shinobi. Or, at the very least, that was one of the major reasons, she reasoned. The other reason… She thought to herself. As she looked around at her classmates, she wasn't sure if any of her answers would satisfy the boy at the front of the classroom.

Hands were steadily raised as her classmates arrived at their own conclusions. She was still unsure of her response, but she raised her hand anyway because there were probably no right or wrong answers to this type of question. And it was possible she would not be summoned to respond as well.

He was certain he’d been asked this question before, almost as if it was in another time…in another life. It was a familiar question, and yet there wasn’t an answer that he could think of that was appropriate enough to respond.

What did it mean to be a shinobi?

He would repeat the question in his mind, echoing it as he bounced thought after thought of what the truth behind it might be. His eyes fluttered to An, for some reason hoping to find an answer in her blue hair and eyes. She raised her hand and it seemed so effortless to Noumu. Was she sure of her answer? Were the others in the classroom also sure?

Awkwardly and hesitantly he raised his own, his head and eyes lowering to the side. He hoped that he wasn’t called upon to answer as he wasn’t even sure there was a right answer in the first place. To Noumu, it seemed like a trick question. Wasn’t it?

It couldn’t be something as simple as what he had initially thought.

Not everyone had that answer…no one could be….that stupid, right?

A few hands went into the air, but Toru's gaze landed upon the dark headed Noumu. Not because he was exuding confidence, but exactly the opposite. He wanted to know what a boy who was avoiding eye contact had to say. What could someone like this have to say? To him, this was a valuable moment. Sometimes the quietest people had some of the most genuine insight.

But the students thoughts were generally correct, there was no *real* right answer. Though it had a moral implication to it too. Shinobi were soldiers and what did they do first and foremost? Protect and serve.

"You..." He pointed towards Noumu quite lightly and the actual home room sensei nodded.

"Noumu-kun, what do you think?"

Toru blinked once, slowly. His hands clasped behind his back now as he waited for an answer.

He would remember the boy's name, he would have to. He remembered a few names here and there, from enrollment files. But there were many students, and at times it was very hard to remember everyone. The teenage Mizukage gave Noumu the floor though, he wanted him to speak before he would add on at all. And it seemed that most of the classrooms attention had shifted to the boy with the averted gaze.

[attr="class","koan"]Noumu gulped–visibly and audibly–as he stood from his desk. His face was clearly clammy and anxious as he had been called out by the powerhouse of the village: Kaguya Toru. The youngest Mizukage their village had known... He was, in Noumu’s eyes, a wonder to behold and he was still only a few years older than the Kuronmeru boy. He could feel an immense pressure down the back of his spine, and the gazes of the classroom caused the hairs on his arms to stand firmly.

The young man would clear his throat and he would stand tall despite a visible weakness in his lower back from years of hunching. "We are what you need us to be, Lord Kaguya. But…with our own mind and our own morals. We are to serve and protect the people under your leadership, but just as everyone is human…so is the Mizukage.” Noumu spoke with a bead of sweat slivering down the side of his temple. He spoke not of Toru, but of previous mishaps and poor decisions that had been made by those who had once sat at his throne. A Mizukage was still human, and therefore prone to err. "We are, simply put, here to serve the people and ensure their safety and their children's."

The role of a shinobi was to serve and protect the people…not their leader, and that was the truth to which he spoke. A corrupt leader could do more damage than a hostile nation…and it could do so quietly and without much confrontation. If anything, that was more dangerous, was it not?

Noumu waited in awkward silence, wondering if he was even right. His gaze shifted to An, the one person in the room that he knew could ground him, and then back to Lord Toru that made his knees weak and trembling.

Toru was not emotionally perceptive, though he was also not very emotionally expressive. Still, he could see the signs of physical discomfort on Noumu's features and body. The physicality was what he read beyond everything else. But it was to be expected, after a year of being a diplomat he had to tune in, to learn how to read these details so that he could speak to his subjects better. Though, he was still learning and he had a feeling that in a lifetime he would not learn everything that there was to learn. He sincerely hoped that he would be a good leader, no matter how long his reign would be.

The young dark-headed boy spoke - though he was hardly much younger than Toru was himself - and Toru had to agree with his observation of what a shinobi was. Or rather, the meaning behind their statuses as shinobi or shinobi in training.

"Good." It was a simple bit of praise, but Toru was not one who praised often - if at all - so this was meant to soften his presence by the slightest of slivers. It was also an indicator that Noumu could sit back down and relax.

"As Noumu-san has shared, shinobi are protectors. Extensions of the military and the Daimyo." In the case of Mizu no Kuni - even these students would know - the Daimyo and Mizukage were one and the same.

"We protect our people, our land. We are loyal and we die without hesitance for the people, and for the land. We are not without our flaws, because we are human. But we must strive to be better, because our mistakes reflect upon others in often dramatic ways. So, I hope you will use your years here in the academy to strengthen your minds, not just your bodies."

Perhaps this was a good spot to start transitioning towards the next part of the lesson. The practical part. The lecture was meant to be short anyway. Though, he also wanted to open the floor for candid questions for him.

"I will open the floor now for any questions anyone might have. You may ask me anything and I will answer to the best of my ability." As a leader, he had to be transparent with his underlings, at least as much as it was possible.

The hand chosen was that of her classmate Nomu, so the Gure girl lowered her raised limb and listened intently to her friend's thoughts. Unexpectedly, Nomu's response was quite similar to An's conclusion about the meaning of being a shinobi, with some differences here and there, but the general gist of their thoughts was quite similar. That's my friend! As she felt a bit closer to the older boy, the corners of her lips raised slightly, and when their gazes met, she gave him a small nod and a genuine smile, trying to encourage him. Seeing how nervous the other person was.

The Mizukage had acknowledged her classmates' reasoning, adding and expanding it a bit more. An was quite amazed by how wise Toru was, she could feel that he was speaking from experience, not the knowledge one reads in books, but from real-life experiences, that of a warrior who had been on countless battlefields. This was true, as there was no other way someone as young as the current Mizukage could take such an important role.

Following the brief explanation, the young Kaguya invited the assembled students to ask him any questions they had, promising to answer them to the best of his ability. If An had more time to prepare, she might have been able to come up with a question, but the sudden announcement put her in a bind; she wanted to ask something but didn't know what, so she sat quietly in her thoughts, trying to come up with one while others were asking theirs. Even she is really not sure if she'll ask one or not.

Yosei's smile grew wider when his cousin Nōmu was called up to answer. This was going to be quite fun to watch. And the red eyed boy wasn't disappointed, watching his shy cousin hesitate in his answer, before giving one that was the complete anti-thesis to his cousins very own blood. While loyalty to the Mizukage was at least understandable, the position had ties to the clan that went all the way back to the beginnings if the Civil War, a blood debt as it were. They gained their freedom, and Kirigakure gained its strongest protectors. But the people? Protecting the innocent? It was laughable, and the boy wasn't hiding his smile as Nōmu embarrassed himself further by going on about it. The people were all lesser blood, they only had the worth they did because they were his fellow countrymen. They were just worth enough that they were worth saving with his clans mastery of Medical-Ninjutsu. But they weren't worth enough to care about as actual beings, or whatever symbolism the Mizukage was now trying to paint them as as Nōmu sat down. And while the Kage tried to make a point about fighting for others, Yosei would lean forward while sitting behind his cousin to whisper a truth that they both knew. A failure answer worthy of such a failure like you, don't you agree?~

It was his favorite nickname for his shy relative, "Failure". And it was because they both knew it to be true. He was a failure of a Kuronmeru, to the point he'd dropped the name entirely. And being a Kuronmeru was all that mattered. He was so soft he'd even told their upbeat classmate about the essay that she'd carelessly let slip from her mind. He couldn't even enjoy the little things like watching others squirm. And yet, the red eyed sadist did show a certain amount of tolerance for his cousin. For one, he was willing to associate with him in the first place, and second he never called him a lesser blood. For no matter how much he might not want it, the shy boy he was teasing did have black blood.

But that only applied to his cousin. Everyone else in this room, even the Kage, was of lesser blood. And while looking at the classroom he could see his one classmate, a blue haired girl whose name he really didn't know pondering on the Mizukages call for open questions. And Yosei did let out a smirk of what could only be called superiority. He already knew everything he needed to know about his reasons, they'd been beaten into his head and cut into his flesh, the scars on his arms visible from the boys short sleeved shirt. He had no shame about them, no reason to hide them. They were a symbol of him belonging to the strongest clan in the village. And yet, the Mizukage was proof of the Kuronmeru's failure. They weren't strong enough to take the title. Which did lead to one question. What makes you stronger than everyone else? Oh! And...What should be done with failures? His one question quickly turned into two, the boy giving a relaxed, yet knowing smile to Nomu as he did.

LITTLE TOTA

While the entire class participated with the lesson taught by toru-sama, Tota stood lazily in a half asleep daze. He'd spent too much time focusing on his physical and medical training lately that he hadn't the energy left for his theory classes. Usually he'd just sneak the lesson notes from Dansui's books later that night without his knowledge, but today was different. Today the great Mizukage arrived to bestow wisdom upon the class and yet Tota could barely pay attention.

As questions were asked of the students and toru begun picking them at random for answers, Tota sunk into himself hoping he wouldn't be chosen. By his luck one of the Kuronmeru boys stood up for his chance to speak. 'Tch. Of course it would be Nomu. Those Kuronmeru are so full of themselves' he thought sheepishly.

Tota accidentally sounded his distance for their answer with a quick click of the teeth. Once he realised what he had done, the boy quickly perked up to see if anyone noticed. Thank god no one had, he thought as the lesson continued. Now awoken from his tired state Tota listened intently on the Muzikage's words about the true duty of shinobi. He  hadn't had the attention earlier however to ask questions in reply.
