The deserts of Kaze no Kuni were a treacherous place at any given moment and it was wonder that anyone had been able to call this place home, let alone establish an entire village that was considered one of the five great nations. However, with all the prosperity it didn't prevent less than pleasant things fro still happening and this mission was proof of that. A rather harsh sandstorm had blown through the southern part of the country and with it a caravan of traders had been reported missing. This wasn't an uncommon occurrence but unlike natural disasters in fairer countries even after the storm was gone there were still the perils of being in the middle of a desert that they had to deal with. Being buried by the ever shifting sands, the heat and murderous sun, and of course the predators that called Kaze no Kuni their home and would surely be on the hunt for their next meal were all dangers that any and all of the missing traders would have to contend with, and depending on the severity of their injuries there might not have been much time left to get to them.

In response to the request Suna had tasked a couple chunin to locate and rescue the group of traders, a bit thin for a rescue mission but conflict was ever present in the shinobi world and more bodies here meant less help elsewhere. No matter, Asahi felt confident that both he and Zakku would be able to find the missing traders and get them to safety. Of course, finding their exact whereabouts in the aftermath of a sandstorm that quite literally shifted the landscape would not be an easy task but it would be done none the less.

The chunin would be stationed near the gates awaiting the arrival of the blue haired youth. The sun had barely risen above the horizon denoting just how early it was as time was of the essence and the area they would have to cover required as much daylight as possible.

Zakku had navigated the deserts of Kaze no kuni so often during his runs he'd forgotten others still ran the risk of getting lost.  Especially after a sandstorm.  Now it was his problem to go looking for some merchants.  The blue haired chunin was shocked with how much more he was being trusted by the village for these tasks recently.  Though it couldn't have come at a worse time.  He was still setting up in the greenhouse when his clone delivered the orders.  He had a limited amount of time to prepare for his plan but he was warned that he wouldn't be totally off of missions.  At least he managed to get the seeds planted before he'd passed out that night.  Grabbing his equipment he'd left the greenhouse and made his way towards the main gate.

He hadn't realized how early it was until he'd gotten stabbed in the eyes by the early morning sun.  It'd make sense to leave this early.  They needed as much light as they could get.  Arriving at the gate Zakku slowed himself down and walked up to his Teammate.  "Sup dude?  Been awhile since it's just been us."  Zakku flashed a quick devil horns his hands still dirty from his late night gardening.   Looking at his hands he'd let out a low hum remembering he hadn't washed them.  With a shrug he just lowered them deciding to worry about them later.  "So where should we start looking from?"  He asked as they started their journey out of the gates.

It wasn't long until his mission partner arrived and in not so surprising fashion the boy's hands were as dirty as his attitude had been in the past. Flashbacks to their last mission together with Han and the insubordination Zakku showed played vividly in his mind, not to mention that loud odor that he had been emitting basically the entire time. All that said, the blue haired youth had proven himself a capable shinobi when it came to fighting and maybe, just maybe, they would be able to make it through this mission without too much incident. Everyone had the capacity to grow and change their mindsets as time passed so there was hope for Zakku yet.

"Yeah it has been a while, hasn't it? Takato-san keeps me busy so not a lot of time to jaunt off through the countryside." It was a half truth. There wasn't much a man such as Takato needed protecting from and it had been quite some time since his last diplomatic mission outside of Suna that actually required Asahi to tag along, so it was mostly odds and ends that he was performing to keep himself busy, and to a lesser extent preventing another situation that required a detachment of the shinobi force.

Zakku's question brought Asahi back into the present and to the task at hand. Kaze no kuni was a huge place, even if most of it was inhospitable desert, and the ease at which things and people could get buried in the sweeping sands made rescue and recovery efforts like these all the more difficult. However, the details given to the duo would help at least point them in the right direction. "Well the sandstorm was in the southern part of the country so that helps narrow it down. The group we're looking for are traders and if I was a merchant the only place I'd be in that part of the country is Roran. Not sure if they were heading to or leaving from but I imagine starting our search around there is a good start." Asahi would reply as he figured the best method to reach their destination was just a straight shot south being sure to avoid the mountains that lined the eastern side of the country. Merchant routes were rife with bandits and thievery and the last thing Asahi wanted to do was waste time in unnecessary fights.

Nodding Zakku would tuck his hands into his vest pockets as they walked.  "Alright Roran it is."  He'd never spent much time in Roran.  His old Genin team had once chased the Cabbage man half way to Roran before their Sensei had dragged them quite literally back to the village.  Though he wasn't going to bore anyone with memories of the past he did smile at the memory.  It brought a warm feeling to the teenaged shinobi.

Zakku was more than aware of the bandits that had staked their claim in attacking and robbing merchants that traded with Sunagakure.  The one field he couldn't change when he gained influence over Sekara but he could help take some of the heat off the Merchants by makin a bigger and meatier target.  Gambling really does bring out the 'Best' of people.  He knew it was hoping for a lot but he was willing to be the hopeful one.  Especially since he was the only one so far up to the task.  "If the bandits got them their tactics have improved damatically.  They'd use to wait till he storms passed then made their moves.  Unless they've gotten better equipment but I haven't heard of anything in terms of Goggles and face masks being stolen.  Unless someone didn't report it."  Crossing his arms Zakku would ponder his own points trying to figure out if there were bandits or if it was just someone getting lost.  He was hoping they'd just gotten lost in the storm.  He needed to get back and keep tending to the greenhouse.

"Well, around Roran, I doubt they made it to the city otherwise someone would have sent word by now." It'd be wishful thinking to be able to just search in one of the best kept cities in the country but chances were the duo would be spending a majority of their time combing the desert for any sign of the missing merchants. It wasn't a fun prospect by any stretch of the imagination and anyone who spent any extended time in Kaze no Kuni knew that trying to find anything in the shifting sands was akin to a needle in a haystack riding on a conveyor belt.

There was, of course, the other possibility that bandits were also the cause of the missing people. Sandstorms were not new to anyone who lived in the country and even the particularly bad ones could only disrupt the caravans but so much, so to hear absolutely nothing from them definitely heightened the possibility of foul play. Wanting to avoid the storm may have pushed the traders towards the mountain range on the eastern border of the country where bandits were known to make their home... if you could call it that. Fighting the elements was one thing but armed --and sometimes trained-- robbers was a completely different story. They probably wouldn't have tried anything in the middle of the storm especially if what Zakku was saying about their lack of proper equipment was true, which led to the possibility of striking in the aftermath when the caravan was still trying to get their bearings back. "Yeah, we definitely have to keep that possibility open. There's plenty of money to be made if you can successfully loot a merchants caravan and it would probably explain why this mission is ranked as high as it is. There are hundreds of merchants coming in and out of Roran on a weekly basis and usually a missing person case who isn't a noble doesn't warrant a B-ranking. I wonder if it has anything to do with what they were carrying?" Asahi mused aloud in response to Zakku. He had found a few things odd about the mission and it being given a green light with only two chunin assigned, but there was little they could do about that now.

Since they weren't heading all the way to Roran their journey wouldn't take nearly as long but there was still a lot of desert the two needed to cross before reaching the merchants last known location. Asahi wished that the circumstances for him being able to stretch his legs for a bit were better and it seemed that he only was able to get out and about when it was attached to something less than fun.

"Alright we got a lot of ground to cover, let's pick up the pace a bit."

Zakku wondered how much the bandits made robbing caravans.  Did they keep the stuff that they thought was cool or did they sell it for a higher price?  Questions for later.  But what were this group of merchants carrying though?  The animals especially the sandworms leave evidence of their presence around.  Nodding in agreement with Asahi the blue haired teen would stuff his hands into his pockets.  "Hopefully it's just normal supplies and nothing that'll get us in trouble but you are traveling with me though."  Smirking he'd chuckle a bit.

"Now you're speaking my language."  Picking up the pace without removing his hands from his pockets Zakku would keep a decent pace to make sure he wouldn't lose Asahi.  "I didn't get my morning run in anyway so this'll be a great substitute."  The speedster loved to run in the mornings feeling the air change from the cold night to the extremely hot Suna weather helped him prepare for the day and gave him an excuse to get out of the village.  Though it had been placed on the back burner while he was in the greenhouses he still would try to find time to run.  "If it's sandworms they're eggs are being poached again.  That was the reason they were attacking merchants just outside of Suna."  Zakku thought aloud as he ran.  "Normally they stay in their mating and hunting grounds but they get explorative once someone starts trying to steal their unborn from them."  If it was Sandworms they'd at least know what to expect.  Bandits were a whole other story though.  Humans were unpredictable and wouldn't always react how they'd expect.

After running for a bit he'd look at Asahi.  "So do you think it wa-"  His foot caught something and tripped sending him face first into the sand and sliding for a bit.  "I found something."  Zakku's muffled voice came from the sand as he removed his hands from his pockets and pushed himself up.  Looking back there was a wooden wheel sticking partially out of the sand.  Was it buried by the sandstorm?  Standing up he gave it a tug revealing half of a broken wheel.  "Oh..."

Muddling through the possibilities helped to pass the time during their trek and it also helped keep Asahi's mind off just how much energy he was using to keep up with Zakku. Had the blue haired Chunin always been that quick? Asahi wasn't the fastest shinobi in the world by any stretch of the imagination and his fighting style reflected that fact but it was always an odd feeling when the gap between physical abilities was made evident. No matter, they were making good time and chances were they'd be moving at a much slower pace once they reached the search area.

"Ah damn, sandworms would suck. I hate having to quell nature after people put it out of wack." Asahi replied while thinking about what he would have to do if those large beasts were truly the culprits. Rarely did they attack people unless provoked, and someone stealing their eggs was definitely a good enough reason. With that said, the question then became if the merchants were just in the wrong place at the wrong time or if they had been the ones doing the poaching? Either way the two were tasked with finding them and regardless of the details if they had been victims of a sandworm attack then chances were high that this was more a recovery mission than a rescue one; but they would cross that proverbial bridge when they reached it.

Asahi's momentum came to a screeching halt upon seeing Zakku trip and unearth what looked to be pieces of a wagon wheel. Judging from the appearance it hadn't been sitting out exposed to the harsh elements for very long so it was one that had been in current use. "Looks like this is the start of our trail." The Chunin spoke before bringing his hands together to form a seal and expand his chakra through the area. The only other 'ping' in the immediate area was that of Zakku so unfortunately it wouldn't be as simple as digging up some people who had been buried by the sands.

"I don't feel anyone else out here so I guess we start digging and see what else we can find. You might want to stand to the side." Asahi added as he prepared another set of seals. The boy hadn't brought a shovel with him and he wasn't dumb enough to clear a sea's worth of burning hot sand with his bare hands which left only one option. Once Zakku was in the clear the Chunin would inhale deeply before loosing a powerful wave of wind in the direction that they had been headed. His hope was that they'd be able to clear enough of the sand in one fell swoop to speed up the process of finding clues.

Zakku was always amazed by Asahi's ability to find people.  To say he was slightly jealous would be an understatement.  Seeing Asahi find whoever and whatever they needed made Zakku wonder if he'd ever abused the ability like he surely would have.  The blue haired chunin probably would have been able to avoid a lot of trouble if he had though.

As Asahi confirmed there was nobdoy around Zakku felt his stomach drop a bit.  It was both a good and bad thing.  Good because there wasn't anyone nearby but bad because it might also mean they were dead.  Pulling out his goggles he pulled them over his eyes and moved out of Asahi's way.  "Ready."  He said when he was out of the the way.  His goggles were dull brown and the lenses were tinted.  Hand me downs from his fathers time as a shinobi.  Covering his mouth Zakku held his breath as the sand was blown away revealing a knocked over wagon.

Zakku began to investigate the wagon finding a few broken bags and the remnants of barrels but thankfully no bodies.  "Looks like they were just transporting supplies.  Wait a minute."  Reaching into a bag Zakku pulled out a handful of straw from one of the bags a small bag was hidden under it with black pills inside.  Zakku examined the pills through the bag and let out a thoughtful hum.  "You ever seen these before?"  He held it out for Asahi to see.  He'd been around the narcotics scene for awhile but he'd never seen or heard of anything like what he held.

It wasn't the most delicate method of clearing the area by any means but time was of the essence and they needed to find clues quickly. Once the clouds of sand settled elsewhere the two would begin their investigation of the immediate area, and it seemed that the piece of wheel that Zakku had tripped on was part of the caravan they were looking for. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the winds hadn't unearthed people so there was a chance that they were still alive out here somewhere, but it was unclear if they had abandoned the wagon due to the storm or because of something else.

There was little that seemed out of the ordinary until the blue haired youth pulled out a bag from the debris that was filled with straw and... another bag. Curious. The small, black pills he removed from them were unlike anything Asahi had seen before and the situation was becoming more clouded by the moment. "Nope, can't say that I have. They don't look like ration pills and even if they were there'd be no need to hide them like that. Hopefully we can ask the merchants what they are when we find them, or at the very least I'm sure the higher ups in the village will want to take a look at 'em so hold on to the bag for now." Asahi replied before continuing his search through the debris. It was no secret that merchants ferried all kinds of goods across the land and they ranged in both price and complexity so while the pair finding something that they were unfamiliar with wasn't unheard of, it couldn't be pure coincidence that these black pills were about the only thing they found in a missing persons case.

For a moment the Chunin wondered if the contents of that bag had anything to do with the less than reputable people in Sekara and if these merchants had possibly gotten mixed up with some bad people. It was always a possibility in Kaze no Kuni and there was little else more valuable to have under your thumb than a traveling merchant who could procure goods from all corners of the globe. There was no proof of that though and just jumping to conclusions wasn't going to get them anywhere, besides, wasn't that place supposed to be back under Suna control now anyway?

"Now we just have to figure out what direction the rest of 'em went..."

Zakku nodded and tucked the back into his pack.  He knew better than to deal with unknown substances.  He wasn't that immature.  At least not anymore.  Continuing his search he found nothing else of interest.  Zakku sighed running his hands through his hair before resting them behind his head.  Zakku scanned the area only seeing sand.  "The storm wasn't that long ago right?  They couldn't have gone that far."  Pulling himself up onto the highest part he could Zakku covered his eyes from the sun and examined everywhere.

"Ya know if they left us a breadcrumb trail it'd more than likely have been covered and gone by now."  Something glinted in the distance.  squinting he waited for another glint from the object and he was rewarded with another glint.  Raising his arm Zakku pointed it out.  "Hey check it out something shiny."  He said as he jumped down.  "I guess not all the breadcrumbs were covered."  The blue haired shinobi joked as he began to make his way towards whatever was making the glinting.

Zakku found a rock with a locket draped around it.  The golden heart hitting his eyes with a redirected sunbeam.  Wincing slightly he picked up the more than warmed up metal and showed Asahi.  "Dude.  I think this has officially turned into a kidnapping."  He said solemnly.  Zakku was beginning to wonder if someone in Sekara had been behind this.  Slavery and extortion wasn't out of their wheelhouse.  He'd seen the worst of it every time one of his clones had gone to gather information.

"Not terribly long ago, no, but without any kind of rock formations or shelter there's little telling what direction they ran off in." Asahi replied as the duo continued to search the area. Sandstorms were no joke and it was all too easy to get turned around in the chaos of the whipping wind and dust not to mention trying to keep whichever animals they were using as cart carriers calm and protected. Alas, traders had been crossing this desert for hundreds of years moving wares and more often than not they had developed ways to make it through such occurrences without issue, so what had happened to these guys?

Asahi was beginning to run dry on possible leads when Zakku's exclamation turned his interest to the locket that he found. There was a good chance it could have just been knocked off of the person who was wearing it during the storm but a piece of jewelry, a wrecked wagon, and some mysterious contraband were too much of coincidence at this point and it would have been wrong to dismiss the notion of foul play. "Let me see if I can pop it open, at the very least there could be a picture or something that can help us out." The boy spoke as he attempted to find a clasp or something of the sort that would reveal the inner contents. Most of these pieces of jewelry held little more than a small picture of a loved one, but at this point something was better than nothing.

Pulling the clasp apart a tiny folded slip of paper fell from the locket onto the sand that Asahi was quick to sweep up before the winds got hold of it. Upon unravelling it there could be seen a hastily written note, or at least a few hastily written letters: O E T. "Ah damn, I think you're right. Whoever this belongs to must have overheard where they were being taken and tried to write a note and ditched it with the locket. We gotta try and cut them off before they get to the city, once they hit the coast the merchants and whatever else they were carrying could be shipped off anywhere."

While Roran might have been the most known coastal city in Kaze no Kuni it was not the only one with Oetsu being another on the opposite side of the country. Unfortunately it had the privilege of being located both just south of the Badlands and on the other side of a mountain range which made it a not too hot traveling destination, but a perfect location for wanting to offload stolen merchandise and people. "If I had to guess with them not ditching all the carts they are probably going to go all the way west until they get to the split in the mountain range where they can turn south to Oetsu. It's a lot of ground to make up but we're not the ones lugging around a bunch of heavy wagons and animals so I think we should be able to catch up to them. You ready?"

Zakku tossed the locket to Asahi.  He wasn't going to open it.  His finger nails weren't long enough to do it.  Chewing on them out of boredom had kept them short.  As Asahi opened it their fears were confirmed.  "Shit."  Zakku muttered as his teammate confirmed the fact.  Asahi was right it was a lot of ground to cover especially for a group carrying more than what the pair of them had.  Thankfully they were faster than a group of kidnappers and their supplies.

Zakku couldn't help but smile.  "This is where I shine my dude."  Bouncing on his feet Zakku felt the familiar feeling of excitement for a good run build up inside him.  "Think you can keep up?  I'll try to keep a decent pace for ya."  He chided his friend and started to run.  He'd save his chakra for when they needed it.  Wasting his chakra now would do them no good later on especially with a hostage crisis.  Apart of him still wondered about the pills.  What were they for?  What troubled him the most is that he had no idea where they came from or how they were made.  Were the bandits on some sort of new drug?  If so what were the effects?  This was definitely going to be handled delicately.

The mountain range wasn't Zakku's usual running ground.  Avoiding the uneven terrain and sudden drops was a big enough deterrent for the blue haired chunin but given the circumstances he couldn't avoid the area now.  Slowing down he pointed out a pair of wheel tracks to Asahi and covered his mouth signaling he was going quiet.  There was no telling if they'd left someone to check for any tails and he didn't want to alert anyone prematurely.

Asahi should have known better than to make any kind of reference to catching up to people as it always flipped the 'gotta go fast' switch in Zakku. Perhaps he would have felt different if he could run that fast but the fascination of being able to put one foot in front of the other as quickly as possible still eluded him. Thankfully, the blue haired youth was kind enough to not race ahead too much during their trek and for the most part wasn't using any chakra to augment his speed which could have been a dead giveaway as they got closer to the group. They still weren't sure just exactly the situation was and how many of the original group remained along with any newcomers, so subtlety was still of utmost importance.

The dunes of sand in every direction would begin to give way to a range of mountains to their south as they continued their journey. They had managed to make good time and it wasn't long before Zakku pointed out the wagon wheel tracks that had been left behind. It was a good find and a near confirmation that Asahi's hunch had been correct, though he never would have thought of the idea without that note hidden inside the locket. Alas, they still needed to confirm that whoever had made these tracks were the merchants they were looking for, in addition to to ascertaining what condition they were in and who else may have been with them, or rather, how many others were with them.

With the area around them becoming more rocky it left ample opportunity for someone in the operation to be stationed as a look out and early warning system. It wouldn't take many people to overpower a small merchant caravan, especially one that was down a wagon, but there was still no telling just how many people they were contending with. As there run slowed Asahi would attempt to pick up the signatures of anyone in the immediate area, and while his range of detection wasn't as far as if he were truly concentrating it would make due for their immediate surroundings.

Thankfully no one pinged a signal which was a good sign and the chunin would signal to Zakku that no one else was around. That fact could have changed as they neared the target but for all intents and purposes they were free all the way to caravan.

Zakku watched Asahi and when he didn't react to anyone being around the blue haired teen kept his pace.  His eyes kept scanning the area incase someone was watching from a distance.  Another time he wished he had the ability to sense people like Asahi but his eyes and ears were going to have to do.

Thankfully it looked like the kidnappers were a bit too confident in their plan.  Following the tracks Zakku hadn't seen any people watching them but that didn't mean hidden eyes weren't observing.  Especially in the rocks of the mountainous area they traveled through.  Zakku could also tell it wouldn't take much to cause an avalanche of rocks.  What a horrible way to go.  Either being crushed to death or laying broken under piles and piles of rocks.  If there were worse ways to go Zakku didn't want to know.

Ahead of them A wagon could be seen being pulled by a very stubborn steed.  Its 'owner' struggling to keep it going as it'd stop and shake its head in defiance.  Zakku slowed and moved for cover.  "Think that's them?"  He asked Asahi in a whisper and waited for his teammates confirmation.  What else were the odds another caravan was traveling through here and with a covered wagon.  Zakku didn't trust it.  Watching the owner of the steed pull the animal back into motion the blue haired shinobi couldn't help but feel pity for the animal.  "Poor thing."

With no lookouts in the immediate area the duo were free to continue following the tracks without fear of being spotted, at least for now, though chances were the closer the group got to the split in the mountain range that would allow them the easiest access south they would forego being as careful. For now, however, the two of them still needed to operate under the assumption that whoever these people were had enough smarts between them to put a lookout somewhere along the path. Granted, without knowing just how big this operation was there was no way to be sure that was part of their plan, after all it didn't take much manpower to take control of a group of civilians.

As the two continued to move along the more rocky terrain a single wagon would eventually come into view in the distance. Could this have been the ones they were looking for? Whoever was steering the thing was having a hell of a time getting the animal leading the wagon to move and while it could have been for any number of reasons there was a good chance that it was due to someone impatient trying to force the creature to move faster than it wanted to. "I think so, but I was expecting more wagons. These guys just might be lagging behind." Asahi replied in a hushed tone. If his theory was correct then the two still had more ground to cover to catch up with the remaining merchants but at least they'd be able to start with this one.

"Tch, get that dumb thing moving, we need to catch up to the others." A gruff voice called from inside the wagon. An older man sat near the back with two others all brandishing some form of weapon while two tied and gagged merchants lay on the bed of the cart surrounded by various wares. From his position Asahi would focus in on the wagon looking for signatures to ping back and he was able to pick up six, which seemed a lot and probably why the steed was struggling so much. "Alright I'm picking up six total people on the wagon, but I can't tell the difference between the merchants and the others. Think you can take out the driver to get that thing stopped?" The Chunin asked of Zakku knowing full well that the blue haired one was raring for an opportunity to get some action in. He'd be the quicker of the two to get to the wagon and hopefully the others would all focus on him leaving Asahi an ample opportunity to back him up.
