TO BORDER TOWN A couple days after their discussion regarding going on a mission together, Tomomi informed Shigure they would be departing to the border town, in the Land of Fire. According to the intel provided, a family member of a country's noble had been kidnapped in an attempt to exhort the noble and use him as a stepping stone to gain influence within the Daimyo's court. Their goal was to rescue the kidnapped noble and capture the people responsible for such a crime, defying the law and order of their home country. The mission would involve tracking down the whereabouts of the criminals, finding where the noble was being kept, and ensure that the criminals were either arrested or killed, and bring the noble back to safety, which made Tomomi and Shigure the perfect team to be sent due to their tracking abilities. It would also serve as a good building block of the their teamwork as members of the Interception Team, so to say that the young Hyuuga was looking forward to the mission was an understatement. As per usual, he had prepared a few meals for their trip to the border town. After they started their journey, the trip to the border town was relatively uneventful, as it was very hard to catch the duo by surprise. "Do you believe this kidnapping is related to the previous attempt to sour our relationship with the Land of Wind?" he asked Tomomi, as he had read the report of a mission completed by the Uchiha a while back, which made him think of the similarities with this one. A threat to Konoha's stability was as much a concern to Tomomi outside the village as inside it. While most of their work took place within the hidden village's walls, the road from mild political turmoil to assassination plot was a very short one. In order to keep the Hokage safe, Tomomi needed their hands in such things. Someone attempting political manipulation was a major threat to be cut down swiftly.

They knew from the moment they read this report that Shigure was the one they would need to bring with. Infiltration missions were Tomomi's specialty, but doing them alone was never an intelligent move for a puppeteer. They had done a few of this nature and they had always come too close for comfort, having to fight in close quarters without a taijutsu specialist to back them up. There was, they supposed, a reason puppetry had been developed in Kaze no Kuni of all lands.

On their trip to the border town, Shigure inquired about the possibility of the kidnappers being involved in the same plot as a previous mission carried out by Uchiha Issei and Uchiha Kazui (before she defected. Thinking of her still made a bitterness they would rather not address rise in their chest, so they put her out of mind quickly).

"I think it is very unlikely that they wouldn't be related," Tomomi answered, continuing to look ahead, their eyes on the horizon. They were perhaps uncharacteristically serious considering how they held themself in casual conversation, clearly much less playful on the job. That didn't stop them from keeping their signature smile!

"The previous group wanted to make an attempt on a Wind Country noble's life to place the Daimyo of Hi no Kuni in bad light. If they could frame the assassination plot as something we carried out, it could easily shatter the relations between us. Extorting one of the Daimyo's court must be done to similar ends. They want to influence policy to strain our relationship. I can hardly understand why. Hi no Kuni and Kaze no Kuni's long standing alliance is beneficial to everyone."

There were probably selfish arms dealers and the sort who thought they could make more money if the two were at each others throats. There were many people trying to push away Hi no Kuni's allies at the moment.

MOTIVATION Tomomi also believed that they were related incidents, which just made this mission even more important: if there were people that adamant about hurting the relationships between the Land of Fire and their main allies, they must've been working for or at least for the sake of the other shinobi alliance, who saw the Leaf and Sand as enemies. The shadows of war were looming ever closer, and they needed to do everything in their power to prevent that. In war there are no true winners; everybody loses, everybody suffers. It is fuel for the cycle of hatred that cursed the ninja world since the dawn of its age. He carefully listened to the explanation about the previous group. Shigure had done his homework and read the report, but he knew that Tomomi was close to Kazui in the past, and maybe they talked more about it, or maybe the fact that they were the assistant to the Hokage gave him a level of clearance - and insight - the Hyuuga lacked. "Perhaps they are being influenced by a foreign power. Our enemies would benefit from the stife within out alliance. And greed can be a powerful motivator. Even though war is bad for all, some people can benefit a lot from it, at the cost of their own people sometimes." and when he said that, he couldn't help but to think on how the Main House benefited from enslaving their own kin. It was the ugliness in the heart of humans. "I think we should try to capture the culprit alive, if possible. If we can figure out what is truly motivating them, we may be able to get to the bottom of it." he added, not wanting to boss Tomomi around, but he was trying his best to contribute to the mission, to try and be helpful both as a fighting body, but also as a thinking one. Shigure offered his opinion on the subject, the possibility that it could be a foreign power involved. He considered the possibility, running it over in his mind, smile slightly faltering as he picked over the rationale of it. What must the enemy be truly attempting to accomplish here, what must they be thinking?

"I'm not certain they're directly connected with a village, at least not one of the major ones," they said. "This work is ...sloppy. To be caught out so plainly in their first attempt and then to strike again so soon in an even more bold way. Any village worth their reputation would have backed off and bid their time for a better opportunity, or gone for a more subtle method. Attempting to infiltrate the Daimyo's court is no small matter. There are better ways to influence members than through kidnapping, and the court member obviously doesn't view them as an exceptional threat to their family if they were willing to report the matter to us at all."

He imagined that if, for example, Earth Country had their family in captivity, the noble may have been more hesitate to risk their wrath.

"So this strikes me more as an independent cell than something centralized within a village. Maybe funded by one, though." He sighed. "Either way, I agree with your assessment. We need to capture the responsible parties alive so we can interrogate them. I specialize in criminal capture and interrogation. If you can herd them into me, I can help incapacitate them."

If Shigure did not have further commentary, Tomomi would spend the remainder of the trip to the border town quietly contemplating, holding out a map to examine it for possible holding houses.

LOOKING FOR PLACES Maybe an enemy village wasn't behind the planning and execution of these attacks, the actions were indeed a bit sloppy, but maybe they were at the very least funding it in any way. They could keep their involvement at a minimum, and even if it didn't work out, it would force the Leaf to deploy shinobi to take care of the matter. It was an easy gamble, and one that would be harder to directly link to them, and try to hold them responsible in any way. Tomomi believed it was an independent cell, but didn't discard the possibility of funding and Shigure nodded at that, trying to absorb all the wisdom the Jounin was sharing. "Makes sense." he responded. He was happy Tomomi agreed with capturing the enemy alive so they could get to the bottom of it. Information and knowledge were of extreme importance in the ninja world, and it was a good thing that interrogation was their specialization, because Shigure was only okay at that, even though he had become a bit better with his latest missions. "That works out well, sensei. I specialize in tracking and intercepting, so that should work well together. I will herd them your way, and we will get them to speak." he said, and with that, they were done with the conversation and could focus on the remainder of their trip. Just like Tomomi, he would grab his own map and try to see which areas could be used to hold hostages. Border town had a more complicated layout, with many alleys and such, which was to be expected; borders were usually brimming with commerce, and the many merchants and travellers also needed a place to stay. "I will start looking at the warehouses in the downtown area. With how busy the area is, it's not unlikely they could use one as a hiding spot. Any other places you want me to check, sensei?" he would ask, once they were very close to the town. If Tomomi had no place to add, he would then activate his Byakugan and start snooping around the suspicious spots he had identified, looking for hidden basements, passages and such. Border town was a bustling little community. Not an industrial center, as building those near borders was usually a bad idea, but certainly a way point for industries to send their goods through. Most of them had to come by way of the north, from another merchant city, Kyōsō, or south from River Country, since Border Town itself sat just east of Storm Country. Given the very recent conflict between Amegakure and Konohagakure, Tomomi couldn't help but wonder if this was their doing, but put it out of mind for now. That was another point of bitterness that would only be a distraction.

The more interesting subject was Kyōsō anyways. While Konoha was on good terms with the primary leadership of that city, there were also many people with interesting political ideas, especially within the merchant community. The place was a hub for goods, but also a marketplace of ideas - ones that easily could've flowed down the pipeline to Border Town.

"The warehouses are a good place to start," Tomomi eventually confirmed. They opened their mind's eye to cast a net over the town, trying to see if they picked up anything useful. As they'd expressed to Shigure recently, their broad sensory range really was quite unhelpful sometimes. There was so much information to absorb and almost none of it would be useful. Even with the stronger chakra signatures, it was fully possible they were simply shinobi stationed within the town, and an enemy capable of suppressing a chakra signature might slip their notice.

"Check the local merchant guilds as well," he decided. "I think there's a high chance we're dealing with someone involved with the Kyōsō merchant class. The village is extremely isolated from the rest of the country and while the Hokage is on decent terms with them, their relationship with the Daimyo's court is more... middling."

Part of him hoped that she had found whatever she was looking for, and the peace and freedom she desired, but another part of him resented her for not giving him the chance to change the Hyuuga, not giving him the benefit of the doubt. Even though that feeling made its way into his heart, he knew all too well that he couldn't afford that level of distraction during an important mission, so he did his best to shrug off the thoughts; he would have time for them later. With Tomomi's confirmation that the warehouses were a good place to start, the Hyuuga would leap up to the rooftop of a tall building and use his Byakugan to start scanning them, one by one. Yes, he could see them all at the same time, but if he wanted the details, it required focus and investing a little bit of time to make sure he checked for hidden rooms, passages, and people with significant chakra within their bodies. The Yamanaka told him to also check merchant guilds, and Shigure nodded. "Will do. Working on the warehouses now." he said, brows frowned as a sign of the concentration the task required. After a good ten minutes, he came up short on the warehouses, there was nothing there that was helpful to the mission. Sure, a few of them had hidden rooms, but they were mostly hiding goods - potentially illegal goods, but crime was a sad reality of the world, and not something they were there to fight against at this time. "Got nothing on the warehouses... I mean, some suspicious goods in hidden rooms, but that's hardly surprising. Will move on the the guilds now." he explained, so to keep Tomomi in the loop of his progress. "So what if it seems hopeless? If it were me, I still wouldn't give up. Embrace your dreams. Learning that there was nothing of use in the warehouses was not a surprise. Warehouses were places where goods could travel through, but also relatively high traffic, sometimes with multiple companies moving goods through the area at a single time. It would be risky to store a kidnapping victim there, as you couldn't really keep a family silent and locked up in a crate, out of sight of innocent people who might pass through the area. Well, you could, but there was a high chance they would suffocate under circumstances like that. If you were extorting someone with the promise of their family's return, that wasn't the sort of thing you wanted to risk.

"We can report the smuggling activity back to the Hokage when we file our reports after the mission," Tomomi confirmed. "Another mission can be sent out at a later date for that." That one was doubtless better for a lower-rank group of shinobi, such as a chuunin team. Not worth wasting their time on at the moment.

Tomomi would begin to move towards the local guilds as well, trying to focus their mind's eye in. They wouldn't be able to ascertain the same amount of information that Shigure would with his sight, but they could still get general impressions when they concentrated on this specific area, trying to tune out the background information of the rest of the border town.

Two in specific seemed to be of interest. One seemed relatively populated, with a great number of people inside, but had a basement level with a sparser population. The second's top floor was near entirely empty, but the basement seemed quite populated. Both extremes were strange. What information could Shigure's sight uncover about which was better worth investigating?

FIVE-SEAL BARRIER Shigure nodded when Tomomi said that they could report the smuggling back to the Hokage, and probably they would issue another mission to take care of that. Perhaps a Genin team, or a couple Chuunin. In any case, their mission had to continue. As Tomomi continued to move towards the local guilds, Shigure followed shortly behind, still using his doujutsu to scan the areas ahead, for any lead he could find. From all the guilds he had checked, there were two that were more suspicious. The first one had a fair number of people inside, but the basement was much more empty in comparison. The other place, the second's top floor was the one nearly empty while the basement was far more populated. Quite the contrast. Still, looking at that, he noticed that the second had a sealing tag in a wall, and his Byakugan could see that inside there was a person. "I think I found something. On the second floor of that building." he paused and pointed discreetly so Tomomi could see it, but it wouldn't be obvious to the other people in the area that he was necessarily pointing at something. "Someone is in a hidden room, and there's a sealing tag there... It's a five-seal barrier... And one of the seals is at that other building." he mentioned, once again pointing to a place, this time the first one. "It's in the basement level, underneath a desk where a man is sitting. There are three people there and they seem to be having a conversation. There's a good amount of money in a briefcase as well." he informed Tomomi. With a five-seal barrier, it meant he would have to search for another three sealing tags if they were to be able to enter the room, but seemed like the operation involved at least two guilds. Jackpot. Shigure had managed to scout a decent amount of information, unveiling that both guilds appeared to be in on the operation, working together to help oversee the capture and holding of the noble's family member. Such conspiracies were always frustrating. They needed to lay this to rest. Capture at least one of them, if not a few of them so they could get corroborative information, ideally at least one from each guild. Other than that, wipe them out so they couldn't reconvene and try again as easily.

"We need to decide how we'd like to enter the establishment," Tomomi said, keeping his voice low. "Walking in through the front door is always an option, but fairly obvious, unless we can find some means to forge guild credentials." Not necessarily impossible. If they could determine what such credentials looked like, or possibly even shake them down out of a random member of the guild, they could get through the front on amicable terms.

"Or we could go in through the front already fighting. Open the lid on that issue right away, but I certainly prefer a much stealthy approach." Taking opponents by surprise was more to their preference, as it was the general way of the shinobi.

"We could also attempt to find a way in around the back. Knock out some members and disguise ourselves as them, or merely find some window to slip through. If we went by the latter method, we could slip into the basement and drop a smoke bomb from the stairs before striking." Both Tomomi and Shigure had extrasensory abilities that would help them to fight even under heavy cover.

COURSE OF ACTION There were many different ways they could approach this mission, but considering their particular set of skills, Shigure believed that the last option Tomomi provided would prove to be the better one. There was no point in trying to break the five-seal barrier right now, because one of the seals was just beside their potential enemies. He had also checked their bodies, and these people could use chakra, although he couldn't really determine to what capacity, but it would be safe to assume jutsus were on the table. "We could slip through the window, use smoke as cover. We can both still fully operate even if we obfuscate the whole place. That would allow us to be quick and effective, while minimizing the need for combat. Another option could be disguising ourselves, but considering they seemed to be decently organized, and have put safety measures in place..." he paused, scratching his chin with his index and thumb. "Play the role of one of them may prove more tricky than it's worth... We might get found out quickly. There are not many of them, so they should know each other relatively well, I would presume." he added. Of course he was just assuming things, but without any more information, they would have to resort to their own theories. A good assessment from Shigure. The group overseeing this was a relatively small outfit. If Tomomi and Shigure had more time to investigate, to follow after a member and learn their mannerisms, they might be able to sneak in by a more social route, but given the urgency of this mission that was not the most efficient method. Sneaking in by way of a window seemed most wise.

"You're right. Let's go around back," they confirmed, moving to slip behind the two guild buildings. The back face of the buildings was relatively plain. They didn't have the loading bays that often outfitted warehouses. Many guilds were just glorified taverns or legal offices, after all.

Approaching one of the windows, Tomomi allowed a string of chakra to snake from one of their fingers. It delved beneath between the panes of the window and found the latch, flicking it to quietly unlock the window. They were able to slowly slide the window up with little fanfare and climbed in without another word.

The two would have to communicate silently from this point forward, though Tomomi excelled at that subject since they could send messages by way of their mind. Still, that was an unnecessary chakra expense, and they would use that technique only sparingly.

As observed from outside, the upper floor of this building was mostly empty. This allowed them to sneak out of the room they'd entered without being observed, approaching the door to the basement quietly.

A simple, but very useful technique; by extending puppetry strings and concentrating on the sensation felt in their fingertips a user can probe to try and manipulate or detect what they can't see. Shinobi commonly use this technique to unlock doors, sliding a string under the door to unlock it from the other side. However, this technique can also be used to try and detect opponents in pitch black or other vision-obscuring scenarios like the Hidden Mist Technique.

SMOKE PREPARATION They both agreed with the course of action they would be taking and were ready to proceed. Shigure followed Tomomi sneaking around to the back of the buildings, approaching one of the windows. Shigure kept his Byakugan activated to watch in case anybody approached the area, but fortunately they were in the clear, so Tomomi could use her chakra threads to open the latch. The two would then make their way inside the building, making gestures to communicate with one another. Once they were inside the second floor, Shigure would take the lead, since he was the melee fighter among them, and head towards the basement, approaching its door. The three men were still discussing something, probably related to the noble they had captured. Shigure would then waive a couple hand seals and lightly touch the door, placing a Smoke Seal on it, and then grabbing a couple more smoke bombs. He would turn back to Tomomi, lift three fingers and start a count down so that they could be ready to waltz into the place and fill it up with smoke. The seal would start releasing smoke in a couple more seconds, and since it had been placed at the door, the only exit would quickly be obfuscated as well. It was time to be quick and decisive. While Shigure prepared the smoke seal on the door, Tomomi summoned forth one of their more combat-ready puppets. For a capture and detainment mission, Tamamo-no-Mae was an obvious choice, though she had to hunch to fit within the hall outside the door. Puppeteering indoors really could be such a pain sometimes.

Shigure began a countdown. At zero, smoke began to pour from the seal, quickly obfuscating the doorway.

Down below, as the men noticed, one of them asked -

What the-? Is there a fire?

Time to enter.

Following Shigure through the door, Tomomi was quick to toss a smoke bomb down below to further obscure the sight of the now-panicking men.

As they were a back-line fighter, they stayed towards the top of the stairs. They lifted the limbs of the Jorougumo puppet on their back, starting to fire off pellets down at the men below in order to overwhelmed their senses and force them back while Shigure was able to move to close distance.

At the same time, they sent Tamamo-no-Mae down below with him, aiming to try to strike one of the men with the blades beneath her robes. Tomomi couldn't see through the smoke like Shigure and had to operate on sensory alone, which made them slightly less accurate than he would be, but with the smoke cover that would hopefully be enough.

From the emerging chaos below, the man who had previously been behind the desk scrambled for a radio, the soft crackle of a line opening cutting through the room. It was clear he was going to try to call his associates in the other building to report the assault.

NO REINFORCEMENTS Once the door was open, with the smokescreen obfuscating the door, Shigure would throw his two of his smoke bombs at the two corners of the room, and Tomomi threw yet another one, thus filling it entirely with smoke, and depriving the three men from their sight, while Shigure could still see clearly with the Byakugan, and Tomomi could guide themselves with the Mind's Eye of the Kagura. They had the clear advantage thanks to how they prepared. Moving at his full speed using Acceleration, Shigure would close in to the man in the back, while Tomomi's puppets were taking care of engaging with the other two, giving him the timing he needed. The man had a radio on his hand, but Shigure was not willing to let him continue, and with a kunai on his hand, he would channel his Gentle Fist chakra onto the weapon and hitting him on the wrist with the Gentle Fist: Pommel Strike, prompting him to drop the radio, which would be then broken by the very same kunai as it was thrown right in the middle of it. The man's wrist turned numb from the strike, but Shigure followed up with a savage onslaught. "Hakke Sanjuuni shou!" he exclaimed as he proceed to assault the man's main thirty-two tenketsus in a quick succession of strikes, shutting down his chakra pathway system and eliminating his ability to use for a while, while also knocking him on his back. The internal injuries, while not lethal, would prevent him from moving much for a while, enough so that he could assist Tomomi with the other men there. "So what if it seems hopeless? A very simple technique, by using chakra the user is able to instantly accelerate their selves to their max speed. This can be done in just about any condition, but any techniques that slow the user's movement (such as armor from jutsu or most jutsu that might slow an individual) will still affect them.

DESCRIPTION:

A variant to an otherwise simple technique tailored towards the Hyūga CLan. The clan member combines their most basic ability, the Shōtei [Palm Bottom] and the common technique of a Pommel Strike. The user attempts to jab an opponent quickly with the hilt or end of their weapon tunneling chakra through it. The chakra is injected into the opponent upon impact and, similar to their palm strike, can damage surrounding tissue and organ and over time can disrupt the opponent's flow of chakra. This technique is available to both Main Branch and Side Branch.

DESCRIPTION:
Essentially a simplistic version of a much more powerful maneuver of the Gentle Fist . However it seems to be quite effective on it’s own. It was born from the difficulty to perform the last sequence of its parent technique. It is used to close off the flow of chakra through thirty-two chakra points of the opponent’s Chakra Pathway System, eliminating their ability to use chakra for some time and make it difficult for them to move. This is done by delivering quick strikes to the enemy in a sequence.
