The Chuunin Exams were just around the corner and though he was certain he shouldn't run himself ragged, he also knew that he didn't have time to waste, either. Other people were out practicing and making themselves stronger. His competition, the ones he would need to try to prove himself against, were training each day. Even if he was nervous or tired, Junichi couldn't slack - he needed to at least try to keep up.

That thought drove him to the training grounds in the early morning. He was slightly tired, as his sleep had been fitful, but he was dedicated to trying his hardest and ran through his warmups.

His staff, the Shabontama as his auntie had called it, was a strange weapon. Two hoops on either end, one smaller and one larger, and made of a durable metal. His clan had helped chip in the funds to have it smithed and given to him as a graduation present when he'd made it out of the academy. For that reason, he was still slightly familiarizing himself with it.

Aiming at one of the training dummies, he focused on swinging his staff one-handed, trying to channel his chakra through his other hand at the same time. It was a really tricky process, one he'd been practicing on for a while, and he found himself failing to concentrate it more often than not. He huffed, pushing his messy hair out of his face.

"Closer that time," he mumbled to himself. "But not close enough. What am I doing wrong?" Kenichi would've been able to figure it out!

Nari stretched his arms over his head, working the kinks from his shoulders as he neared one of the training grounds the contestants had been cleared to use. He was excited for the Exams and hoped he was ready for them, but there was never harm in getting a little more training in before the competition started proper.

He was expecting to be alone at this time of day, but luck would have it that there was another person who had the same idea as him. And even more luck was that the boy who was currently training also seemed to be a polearm user like him. Though, instead of a spear, the boy was wielding a strange looking staff that reminded Nari of those bubble blower sticks young children sometimes had around town.

But same principle, both were sticks at their core. And they were those who wielded those sticks. Maybe Nari could convince the boy to spar with him, help him work on his technique and vice versa.

With that thought in mind, Nari picked up his pace to get to the dirt plot. "Hi hi!" he said, as he came up to the edge, waving.

"My name's Nari! I see you’re using a staff, I use a spear," the teen gestured to the ornate spear on his back. Maybe a little excitable for an out of the blue greeting, but Nari was that kind of guy. "Would you be willing to train with me?"

  A young member of the scattered Araikettei Clan, Narihira has the ability to wield the strange and powerful Life Blades. He created his own Blade at a young age, under the tutelage of his mother, however, instead of making a sword as was common for the Clan members, Narihira designed his in the shape of a polearm.

  Giving it the name Hisuiyuri, he began learning to properly wield it from the moment he could hold it. Due to the connection the blade shares with him, should it ever be broken, both Narihora and the blade's soul would die, so he keeps it on his person at all times and cares for it meticulously.
• 『Deep Chakra Pool』[break]
  Narihira was lucky to be born with a deeper-than-average chakra pool. It allows him to fight and use jutsu for longer periods of time before he tires, compared to those with average-sized chakra pools. It's especially useful for him, due to the fact that his Life Blade is constantly absorbing chakra from him. But thanks to the depth of his stores, he never feels the strain from that drain unless he has depleted the polearm's stores in combat.
• 『Life Blade Chakra』[break]
  As all Life Blades, Hisuiyuri absorbs Nari's chakra continuously as he carries it around, stacking up a decent amount of chakra inside of itself equal to half its wielder's chakra pool. The chakra becomes Hisuiyuri's and cannot be accessed by anyone other than the spear, allowing it to have the ability to self-repair small nicks and scratches it may obtain during combat.

  It also allows Hisuiyuri to have its own built-in security in case someone other than Nari grabs onto it. Using its futon chakra, sharp blades of wind will strike at the stranger's hands and arms until they release the spear. These gouges are minor cuts but they do sting quite a bit if they manage to hit skin.

  When entering combat, Hisuiyuri will use its own stores to fuel its abilities until it runs out and then will begin taking from Narihira. Thanks to his deeper-than-average chakra pools the wielder and weapon are able to go for a decent length of time-fighting in that state, but eventually, it will cause Nari to lose consciousness if the spear takes too much chakra.
• 『Flying Jades』[break]
  Using its natural affinity to fūton, Hisuiyuri is able to detach the six small jade points that line the sides of its spearhead and allow them to hover. By sacrificing the shredding ability the points usually grant the spear, Narihira is able to fire them off either one-by-one or all at once towards his opponents.

  At it's current skill level, Hisuiyuri's points move at a speed slightly quicker than a regular thrown kunai, due to being powered by fūton chakra and Narihira's able to control the path the points take up to 30m.

[Yuie Junichi]

Mid-practice, Junichi was approached by another participant in the exams. A taller teenage boy with dark teal hair and shining amber eyes. The spear he held in his hands was very ornate, intricate and impressive. Junichi looked at it with the spark of a kid who found something cool, though did his very best not to let it show, stopping to balance his own staff on his shoulder.

"Hello Nari," he greeted, bowing slightly at the waist, though he didn't bow as deeply as he would for someone much older. Still, it was obvious that he was slightly more formal, not quite as easygoing as Nari. "My name is Yuie Junichi. I'd be happy to train with you. It's always good to get advice from other bukijutsu experts. Bōjutsu and sōjutsu are probably what I've practiced the most."

Hopefully that meant he would be a good training partner for Nari and not mostly end up riding his coattails. Junichi was still slightly inexperienced, though he'd had some good runs on missions, taking down criminals. Other shinobi were still slightly outside his wheelhouse, so seeing what someone from another village could do was always good.

Stepping away from the training dummies and into the open to give them both room to work, he said,

"When I spar back home I usually have some rules like, uhm..., no dangerous jutsu and avoid the head. Are there any others you'd like to add?"

Ahh, so formal, with the bowing. Nari would feel embarrassed by his own lack of formality…if he had been raised to actually care about that sort of thing. As it was, Nari just simply smiled at the other boy’s greeting. "Nice to meet you, Junichi."

His cheeks did color a little at being called a bukijutsu expert, he definitely didn’t consider himself one, but it was a goal he was working towards. Hopefully someday.

"I’m the same, pretty much, though more of a sōjutsu user myself," he offered when Junichi told him about his technique expertise. "I want to branch out eventually, but Hisuiyuri, my spear, is picky when it comes to learning new techniques."

He reached back and pulled the green spear from its holster, swinging it around so its blade was pointing towards the ground. He was excited to start and could feel Hisuiyuri perking up at the back of his mind as well.

Nari nodded as he moved into his spot, at Junichi’s rules. Sparring rules were good. He had never really used them, besides no killing, because his sparring partners all tended to be a bit intense, but yeah, it made sense to add some rules. At least with Junichi’s rules, he wouldn’t be walking away with burns dotting his skin. "Those sound good, just like a friendly game."

He turned and shifted his stance into a battle ready one, weight on the balls of his feet, ready to move at a moment’s notice. "Ready?"

Just like a friendly game - he would try to remind himself of that so he didn't make himself too anxious about this. Really, the rules were partially so he wouldn't have to deal with broken glasses. He had backup pairs on backup pairs in his bags just in case anything happened to them, but it'd still be inconvenient.

"I'm ready," he confirmed, squaring up. He adopted a stance similar to the Muy Thai square stance. It was a taijutsu form, not quite built for bukijutsu, but he was still piecing together elements of his studies in unique ways, and it allowed him to start with his staff in a braced guard, a beginning position that made him feel steady and confident.

He had a bad habit of allowing the opponent to make the first move, so he decided he would strike first this time. Spinning his staff in his grip, he lunged forward and went for a low strike, aiming for Narihira's legs.

He kept a careful eye on Narihira's spear. Taking the initiative in a staff fight was actually risky given the reach on such weapons. Closing the distance was the most dangerous place one could be, especially given Narihira was a decent bit taller than him.

If Narihira struck back, Junichi would try to shift to blocking instead, trying to brace the strike so he could get in closer.

Nari bunced lightly, waiting. He would usually try and close the gap first, but as Junichi said he wasn’t as familiar with a polearm as he probably was, so he wanted to try and let the other get comfortable. Which meant letting him, in simple terms, move first.

Besides, it could teach Nari something in patience as well.

The other boy lunged forward and Nari let out a giddy laugh. Letting him come within striking distance, Nari grabbed the end of Hisuiyuri with his free hand and yanked down. Hisuiyuri's blade would quickly sweep forward and up, aiming to knock the staff aside and Junichi off kilter.

Then, sliding his hands down the shaft of the spear, being mindful of the blade, the Taki genin would use a simple swap technique to quickly shift his grip and swing the butt back around in an aim to strike at Junichi’s midsection.

It was a simple move, but very useful in causing openings he could take advantage of. If Junichi didn’t know that, it was imperative that he learn it, a swap was one of the best counters any polearm user could know.

If at least his first strike connected, hopefully both, he would then release one hand off of Hisuiyuri and kneel down into a crouch to swing the spear in a large sweep in an effort to either knock Junichi off his feet or force him back. If anything failed, of course, he was ready to leap up from a crouch and jump back to safety.

[Yuie Junichi]

The Taki shinobi moved with a lot of grace and a lot more evident expertise than Junichi. Though Junichi had put a lot of time into his bukijutsu studies, it was evident that Narihira had a time advantage both in pure focus on top of the additional years of practice he had.

Since Junichi had braced for a block, anticipating this kind of counterattack, he managed to catch the first strike without losing his footing. However, the swap Narihira performed took him off guard, utilizing the fact that Junichi's guard was braced high to protect from the upswing to get a strike in at his midsection.

That kind of swap was definitely the kind of thing he tried to utilize, but he was nowhere near as practiced at it. It knocked the wind out of him and that combined with the next sweep caused Junichi to be forced back.

He tried to remember some of his katas. Katas weren't typically useful in a real fight, as they were more just a training of specific patterns of movement that needed to be picked and chosen for a real context, but he still wanted to keep his fundamentals in mind, to give himself a grounding space while attacking back.

Holding his staff with the yin yang grip, he first struck out with an extreme downwards strike, aiming for the feet, then performed his own swap to bring the staff up, aiming for Narihira's chest, since the chin would be off limits.

The sweep forced the Ame shinobi to take a couple steps back like Nari wanted, which was a good thing. It gave him a moment to prepare for whatever Junichi came at him with next. He tensed his muscles and waited for the other boy to make his move.

Nari kept on his toes while in his crouch, and when Junichi came forward again with a down strike, he pushed off with one leg into a sideways roll to get out of the attack’s range. Using his natural speed and agility to get out of the path of Junichi’s staff.

As soon as the rotation was complete, Nari pushed up from the ground into another crouch, spinning his spear so he aimed another sweep at Junichi’s legs and then leapt forward, trying to shoulder check the younger boy and knock him down.

Narihira moved so fluidly, it was kind of hard to know where to put his attention, how to even properly react to his movements. It would surely come with more experience, but it was almost frustrating. He dodged out of the way of Junichi's strike so readily and Junichi didn't feel equipped to return the favor. When Narihira struck at his leg and then moved in to shoulder check him, Junichi fell over almost too easily. The sweep to his feet and bump to his shoulder did the trick, knocking him backwards.

Junichi had the benefit of being really small, and thus springy - bigger shinobi fell harder and all that, which meant he twisted and hopped back to his feet quickly, but on the ground was never the place a shinobi wanted to be in a fight. Outside a spar and in real combat, he'd probably be dead right now. He was so far behind the other people here...

No, calm down. He had to recenter himself, or he wouldn't learn anything here. Ok. Narihira favored low strikes, trying to get Junichi off balance, to force him on the defensive. That meant that his upper body would be less guarded, right? With that vague thought in mind, Junichi retaliated with a front strike, aimed for Narihira's chest. When all else failed, center mass was easiest to hit - it was the first lesson on any weapon art.

Still, it was clear Junichi was not fighting his best, maybe letting his anxiety get the best of him.

As Junichi charged forward, Nari would pull his spear across his chest so as to knock the incoming aside, the polearms would scrape together as he attempted to push it off course.

If it worked, Nari would kick back against the ground again, to allow distance in between them. "Nice try," he praised, "but your path was really obvious. Feinting a path and then switching your aim at the last moment, or causing a distraction would help your charges."

Maybe if he gave some pointers instead of just sparring, it would make Junichi feel more confident. Sure, Nari could let him hit him, but he doubted that would make the other boy feel good. It wouldn’t work for him. Achievements only felt nice if he made them on his own merit.

Narihira brought up his polearm to block Junichi's strike, sweeping his arm out to the side to push away the staff strike, then would move back, building distance between them again. Junichi was mostly relieved Narihira didn't use the opening to strike him in the chest or something - he definitely could've, and Junichi knew it.

"You're right," Junichi agreed, squeezing his eyes shut for a second and forcing himself to relax. He wouldn't learn anything if he didn't calm down and absorb the way Narihira was fighting. And he wouldn't be a very good sparring partner if he wasn't pressing Narihira to react to the unexpected, too. "My strikes are too simple. I get too worried about the idea of wasting chakra and fail to use feints." Kenichi was better at that kind of thing. He was tricky, creative. Sometimes Junichi wished he could think like this brother.

"I'll try to do better. I want this to be useful training for you, too," he said. Alright. Get back into it. He got into a readied stance again, because it wouldn't feel right to go directly from talking to swinging and he wanted to keep this spar friendly.

If Narihira was ready, Junichi would move in again. With the beginning of the strike he would aim at Narihira's upper body again - then he would catch his own staff in a hand roll and twist the trajectory, switching up to aim the strike low. Still pretty simple, but branching out, showing off more of what he knew.

The Taki boy smiled and nodded. The constructive criticism seemed to perk Junichi up a bit, so that made Nari feel a bit accomplished. He wanted to make sure the kid was having fun, and not stressing over the training too much.

With another nod at Junichi to let him know he was ready, the other boy came at him. He moved quite the same as before, seeming to make a direct beeline towards the upper area of Nari’s body and for a moment that he thought the other boy actually hadn’t taken what he had said to heart.

He shifted Hisuiyuri to block once again, but Junichi flipped his grasp at the last moment and swung his staff towards Nari’s lower body. The older boy made a noise of surprise and leapt back, but he felt the sharp pain as the blunt staff struck his shin.

It was a good hit, probably wouldn’t bruise, but it meant that Junichi was learning. Nari grinned and shifted Hisuiyuri to swing downwards and try to catch Junichi’s staff and trap it against the ground while he swung his leg up and tried to aim a kick at Junichi’s hip.

He actually landed a hit! That shouldn't feel like such an accomplishment, but it really did. Knowing that he was capable of landing at least one strike got his confidence up. Though he really shouldn't have let that feeling distract him, because when Narihira struck back Junichi wasn't quite ready for it. The older boy's spear caught against his staff and pinned it to the ground, exposing one of Junichi's sides to that kick. Ouch!

Though his instinct was to retreat, he didn't let that get the better of him. Instead, he would utilize a counter that he had a fair bit of practice with - trying to wrench his staff away from Narihira's spear (easier said than done, he'd probably be working with an awkward angle), he'd try to use Narihira's kick against him, aiming to get the staff hooked around the back of Narihira's leg. If he could slide the staff to the crook of Narihira's knee, he would be able to push back and throw the other boy off balance.

Restricted as his position currently was, even if he succeeded at the move it would probably only give him a split second of space to work, barely enough to recover his position and bring his staff up to defend against Narihira's next move. If it didn't succeed, however, he'd probably end up in an even trickier position with regards to blocking - still, he was trying not to fight as conservatively as he had been.

The enemy's attack is blocked by the staff in the center, and the user twists the staff, one end sliding into the joint of the limb,trapping the limb or weapon. The staff is then swung down, the other end sweeping the enemy's leg from behind the knee and knocking them onto their back.

Nari was feeding off of Junichi’s enthusiasm. He could see that the young boy was excited that he had landed a hit and that feeling wsa infectious. Nari’s second-hand excitement made the pain in his shin disappear and then he himself managed to get another hit on the boy.

But it was okay. Junichi, it seemed, brushed it off and immediately moved on to trying to free his staff from Nari’s pin. The older boy hadn’t put all his weight on holding the staff down, so with a good tug, the younger boy had yanked his staff free and shifted it so the shaft hooked behind his leg.

Nari barely had time to react, as the staff was pulled, taking his leg along with it, aiming to trip him up. Nari yelped and used Hisuiyuri, who he had been wielding backwards in order to prevent hitting Junichi with the blade, and slammed the butt onto the ground, something he probably wouldn’t have been able to do if he had used the spear properly.

It gave him just enough support to shift his center of gravity and sort of roll-leap off the staff and away from the pull that the Ame boy had attempted. He landed awkwardly, not in a good spot to counter, so Nari tried to put some distance between them again so he could regain his bearings.

But still, the move Junichi had used was epic and Nari was making a mental note to learn it himself some day soon.

Using its futon chakra, sharp blades of wind will strike at the stranger's hands and arms until they release the spear. These gouges are minor cuts but they do sting quite a bit if they manage to hit skin.

  When entering combat, Hisuiyuri will use its own stores to fuel its abilities until it runs out and then will begin taking from Narihira. Thanks to his deeper-than-average chakra pools the wielder and weapon are able to go for a decent length of time-fighting in that state, but eventually, it will cause Nari to lose consciousness if the spear takes too much chakra.

  Using its natural affinity to fūton, Hisuiyuri is able to detach the six small jade points that line the sides of its spearhead and allow them to hover. By sacrificing the shredding ability the points usually grant the spear, Narihira is able to fire them off either one-by-one or all at once towards his opponents.

  At it's current skill level, Hisuiyuri's points move at a speed slightly quicker than a regular thrown kunai, due to being powered by fūton chakra and Narihira's able to control the path the points take up to 30m.

He managed to pull the trick off, but Narihira reacted as excellently as expected. He really was an impressive fighter with a quick reaction speed. Junichi felt like he was fighting just to keep up - but that would be the years of different in experience between them. Still, he had managed to make a little space to work with by throwing Narihira off, and he wanted to see if he could make use of that space at all to practice what he'd been working on.

This was the exact kind of place he knew being able to concentrate jutsu with one hand would be helpful. Being able to hold the defensive with a weapon and form a technique at the same time was so essential! So he'd give it a try, even if he thought he'd do poorly.

Keeping his staff up in a defensive hold, he used his other hand to begin forging hand seals. It was slow-going, since it took him a lot longer to focus the technique than if he'd just been doing it with both hands.

If he could pull it off, the idea was to fire off a series of hot water shuriken - all at the ground, he really wasn't looking to scold Narihira with the move - to force Narihira to dodge around a bit, throw off his focus.

Of course, though, given the slightly increased length of time it would take Junichi to finish up the seals, Narihira had a good window to strike or interrupt.

Like it's parent technique, Suiton: Mizu Shuriken the user creates 10 shurikens made out of water. This water is infused with Joton chakra and is hot enough to give a second-degree burn on contact with skin. Clothing will block the hot water from touching the skin for a few moments, but will quickly get soaked and start to burn the skin. Unlike its parent technique, these shurikens are shot from the mouth instead of having to be thrown. These water shurikens have the same cutting power as their metal counterparts.
