It felt good to be back in the Academy.

Sora Minami strolled down the halls of the Kiragakure Shinobi Academy with the strong, assured stride of a woman who knew the place well, her sandals silent against the wooden floor as she navigated the halls, a soft smile on her face. She had been asked –actually asked, not ordered– to speak as a guest teacher for a day to help cover for an injured Instructor (there had been a very unfortunate accident involving a Kaguya, two kunai and a duck), and was looking forward to the chance to teach a full class again, even if it was only for one session.

The Jounin stopped in front of the classroom door, hearing the murmuring of the students inside. Some of them would likely remember her from her time as the main Bukijutsu instructor for the graduating class, or perhaps from her tenure as the History teacher for third years, but it was unlikely any of them had heard her speak on Advanced Chakra Theory and Ninjutsu; that simply wasn’t what she had been known for, after all.

As Sora opened the door, the room grew quiet, the typical hush of surprise at a new teacher’s entrance. That silence quickly devolved into whispers, some surprised, others less so, as a few familiar faces stood out from the crowd, each one clearly remembering their last time in the sparring ring with her. Still, there were no hecklers, no cat-calls, and no pranks, though a fair few of the young men stared at her outfit, clearly more interested in what it showed than who was wearing it. Or the sword she kept at her side, tucked into the strings of her cheongsam’s left hip, waiting.

"Good morning class." She said once she reached the desk, knocking on its wooden surface once, twice, three times as she spoke, hard enough and loud enough to silence any talking. "As some of you may already know, my name is Sora Minami. I’ll be covering for your Sensei today while he recovers from the… incident. You may address me as ‘Minami-sensei’ or ‘Sora-sensei,’ whichever you prefer.”

And… let the class begin.

Sora wasn’t surprised that someone had something to say; children, even the most well-behaved of them, were prone to bouts of excitableness that often could not be contained. Such was the case in this moment, when a young girl further in the back raised her hand, radiating enthusiasm, only to start talking before she even had a chance to call on her. Ah, kids these days. Always eager to learn.

"It’s a pleasure to be here, Miss…" The Jounin said, trailing off to allow the girl a chance to give her name before she continued on, smiling. "And that’s an excellent question. We’ll be covering chakra; more specifically, we’ll be training your reserves today, to help you build up your chakra supply for when you inevitably graduate." She paused then, letting the student’s process what she had said- it was rare for a teacher to have a practical lesson inside, though of course the classrooms were built with such things in mind.

"Do I have any volunteers?" Sora asked a moment later, glancing at the girl who had raised her hand. "You, perhaps?"

"My name is Gurē An," she responded with a sense of anticipation in her voice, a spark of enthusiasm in her eyes as she answered the female teacher's question, her voice clear and confident. An was no stranger to the Academy's lessons and the challenges they presented, but she carried a quiet determination to excel, especially in areas where many of her peers struggled. Sora, meanwhile, continued explaining the contents of today's lesson, which revolved around the crucial task of building up one's chakra supply. This was a skill most if not all, Academy students struggled with; even the most basic ninjutsu jutsus left them drained and exhausted.

As the teacher raised the question of a volunteer, the classroom reacted predictably. Some students fell unnaturally silent, avoiding any eye contact with Sora, while others were quick to raise their hands before the teacher could even finish her sentence. She felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness, but there was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to be a part of this demonstration. And she found herself among the latter group, her hand shooting up eagerly. "Yes, of course," she affirmed, rising from her seat, fully prepared to head to the front of the class if called upon.

Sora watched An as the girl stood, smiling at the enthusiasm she showed. Would that her Genin showed as much eagerness. The bloody twins could learn a lesson from this lot… Motioning for the girl to come down, the pink-haired woman stepped out onto the demonstration floor, glancing across the classroom to see if there might be any other takers; she had no issue with An being the first volunteer, but this lesson worked best when there were multiple people acting on the same information. A few more hands were still up, and she pointed to them, each one coming down in turn until five students were lined up neatly at the front of the class.

"As some of you may already know," She began once the children were lined up, raising her voice just a hair so the entire class would be able to hear her clearly. "Chakra is not an infinite resource. For the most part, your bodies will develop your reserves over time, expanding as you age and utilize them more and more. The lesson for today aims to condition you to use as much chakra as you can safely handle over and over again, until your body adjusts." It wasn’t something that could be done in a single class, of course; this was merely a chance to teach them how to do it themselves, whenever they got the chance to corner an Instructor for a few minutes.

"I must warn you though." Sora said after a moment, voice growing stern as she looked out at the class, glancing at the students in front as well. "These exercises are not for you to use on your own. If any of you practice these at home, you must have at least a Chuunin level Shinobi supervising your training. I don’t want any of you to get stuck with chakra exhaustion and miss the next two months stuck in the hospital." With that, the Jounin turned to her volunteers, looking at An in particular as she gestured to the group, her casual smile returning.

"Now. I want those of you who know the Substitution jutsu to pick an object in the room and switch with it. Then do it again. And again. And again. Those of you who don’t know it may use whichever technique you do know that utilizes the most chakra. If you get tired, you may stop and catch your breath- or return to your seat, if you feel too drained to continue."

An eagerly stepped forward when Sora motioned for her to join the group of volunteers. She couldn't wait to learn and practice more about chakra control. Her eyes scanned the classroom as she sought out suitable objects for the Substitution jutsu. Spotting a nearby potted plant, she decided to start with that.

With a deep breath, An focused her chakra, following the mental steps she had learned for the technique. In a puff of smoke, she disappeared from her spot and reappeared in the place of the potted plant. She grinned with excitement at her success, her pink hair tousled from the rapid movement.

An repeated the Substitution jutsu several more times, switching with different objects around the room each time. It was exhilarating, and she could feel her chakra being used up with each transformation. She pushed herself to keep going, wanting to make the most of this opportunity.

With each successful substitution, An could feel her chakra reserves being put to the test. It was exhilarating, but she knew she had to pace herself to avoid exhaustion. After several rounds, she could feel a bit of strain creeping in. An decided it was time to take a short break to catch her breath and let her chakra replenish. She walked back to her seat, a bit out of breath but with a satisfied smile on her face. Resting for a moment, she watched her fellow classmates continue to practice the technique, eager to join them again once she had caught her breath.

Sora watched the children’s faces as they began to practice, each one capable of performing the substitution jutsu doing so- and before long, there was nearly a dozen of them popping across the classroom, switching places with every conceivable thing they could… and several things they probably shouldn’t have. The Jounin moved between the children easily, catching falling books and stopping potential accidents before they happened, settling into the role of a supervising teacher like she had never stopped.

Eventually, though, the kids began to get tired, with most of them slumping back to their desks for a break as the rest of the class, suddenly eager, began to volunteer. The pink-haired Jounin chuckled, forming a single Shadow Clone to handle the new group of volunteers as she walked over to the group of tired kids, smiling at them.

"You guys are doing great." She said, looking over the gaggle of exhausted kids. Of the ten, a good seven looked too tired to continue, with two hovering near that level but not quite having reached it- and one who looked far more refreshed than the rest, though clearly a little strained. An. Gure An. That was her name. Perhaps she was related to Sho?

"Anyone feel like doing another round of practice with the second group?"

"Yes!" An, fueled by her desire and eagerness to improve, readied herself for another round of Substitution jutsu practice. With a deep breath, she focused her chakra once more, following the familiar mental steps for the technique. In a puff of smoke, she disappeared from her spot and reappeared in place of a nearby desk.

However, this time, things felt different. Her chakra reserves, already somewhat depleted from her previous rounds, seemed to drain faster than before. As she switched places with the desk, she felt a noticeable strain on her energy. Her movements weren't as swift and precise as they had been earlier, and her landing was a bit clumsy.

An pushed through, determined to keep going despite the increasing fatigue. She repeated the Substitution jutsu with a few more objects, but with each transformation, her chakra reserves continued to deplete rapidly. Her once-energetic grin faded into a more determined but fatigued expression

After a few more substitutions, An's movements became sluggish, and she stumbled slightly as she attempted to switch with a chair. She realized that her chakra reserves were reaching their limit, and she couldn't push herself any further without risking exhaustion. Breathing heavily, she decided to stop for now and walked back to her seat, feeling the weight of her depleted chakra reserves.

Sora smiled as the new group blipped about the classroom, her clone walking back and forth amongst the students as she leaned back against the side wall of the classroom, watching the controlled chaos. Most of the students were ready to give up after a half-dozen or so Substitutions, but An… she did more. Four, five, six, seven eight more times the girl used the jutsu, each time a little slower, each time slightly less clean with the landing. Most student’s her age would have passed out from chakra exhaustion after the ninth or tenth jutsu, but the little Gure girl had done a solid fourteen before she started showing the signs of chakra fatigue. Impressive.

The Jounin let several more students switch out, nodding to her clone to keep up the good work as walked over to the once bubbly young girl, laying a hand on her shoulder. "Hey." She asked, looking down at An as she spoke, her lips spread in a light, knowing smile. "You did well, but don’t push it too hard. You still need enough energy to get home." It wouldn’t do for the girl to miss out on class because she pushed herself too hard, after all.

An struggled to her feet, her legs feeling heavier than usual as she stood up. She could feel the lingering effects of her chakra depletion, and her body protested the sudden movement. She wobbled slightly, placing a hand on the desk for support.

With a deep breath, An pushed herself to her feet, using the desk as support. Each step felt like a small victory as she moved toward the door, albeit slowly. Her classmates shared similar struggles, their faces reflecting the exhaustion they all felt. As An reached the door and began to exit the classroom, she cast a final glance back at Sora, her eyes filled with gratitude.
