"Please inform Raika-san that her sensei is here with awesome lesson plans for her next practice jutsus!" Miroru declared at the gates of the Hyuga compound. "And also if you see Shigure-sensei or Hitomi-sensei, please tell them Miroru said hello and wished them a wonderful morniiiiiing thankyewbye~" She beamed as the door was- politely- closed on her, leaving her to find someplace to perch outside the front doors of the Hyuga compound while she waited for Raika to make her appearance.



It was one thing to scamper around and over her own clan's compound to pester Kazui, Daredemo, Kai, and the others, but she'd learned not to sneak into any of the other compounds unannounced. So for the time being, she found a nice rock to sit on and set her bag and gunbai aside, fixing the straps on her cool new leather sandals and shinobi gloves. 

She hadn't exactly scheduled this with Raika, but they hadn't ruled out the exact specifics of the next time they'd meet up to practice, so from Miroru's perspective, this was all perfectly acceptable in so far as it came to ambushing Raika with demands to train.

Raika is excited at first when she's told that her sensei is waiting outside of the Hyuuga compound, as she assumes this means her team has finally received its official Team 1 Sensei, and she hurriedly gets herself dressed, not in the untouched and formal kimonos that were still hanging in her closet, but instead her heavy duty coveralls. Not that she usually wore the top of them anyway for the most part, as she pulls on a fresh tank top as well. She puts her hair up in a ponytail, pulls on the cushioned socks and her boots, and finally the actual coveralls themselves followed by the belted weapon pouch around her waist, complete with the Hung Gar rings, just in case. The Hyuuga member had even said something about a lesson plan, so that probably meant training, and she wanted to get in some training to make herself stronger especially.

So it's a bit of a surprise, though it really shouldn't have been unexpected, to see Miroru outside of the Hyuuga compound instead of a Jounin that would have been her team's official sensei. It made sense, since she'd been told that it had been "some youngster", but the Hyuuga were often dismissive of others. But once she sees that it's Miroru, she gives the younger girl a bright smile that shows that she's not at all disappointed by this surprise.

"Hello, Miroru! What's our lesson plan today?"

If she had been bothered by the fact that the Hyuuga that was acting as a guard for the compound slammed the door behind her like she were some kind of garbage that had just been tossed out for pick-up, she didn't show it. Actually, she likely wasn't, considering her unconventional physique. It would be expected that she was quite used to such treatment from her own clan, despite her insistence that she keep the title of heiress. As it is, Raika starts by pulling on her Hung Gar rings, pulling them from her weapon pouch and attaching them to each of her wrists as she prepares for the lesson. Even if it doesn't involve physical combat, the genin could feel them helping her to build up some serious muscle, which she wanted to get even larger by the time the Chuunin Exams rolled around. She expected to beat the snot out of some of the other genin she might face.

Outside, Miroru waited patiently, only to pop up with a grin when Raika came out to greet her! Once more, Miroru froze for a moment, her height leaving her unfortunately right at... asset level with certain qualities of Raika's. Still, she didn't call attention to it directly, and shook it off, diverting her eyes higher up, tank tops be damned. "I'm glad you asked!"

The redhead popped her hand out in front of her, one finger held up meaningfully. "We- are going to train in the techniques of water-walking and wall-running! Similar in concept, but very different in execution, today is going to be practice on turning even turbulent waters into a battlefield where you can fight your best!"

She thought for a moment, then added, "So maybe it's not a great time to wear your rings, unless you can swim with those on or breathe underwater..." Miroru rubbed the back of her head at the minor oversight, hoping that wasn't gonna be a dealbreaker. She wasn't sure how it COULD be, really, but at the same time, she was always exploring all the possibilities, and people picked weird hills to die on all the time...

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

Raika seems wholly unperturbed by the difference in height between the two of them. She was already feeling pretty good about having learned a useful technique like Shunshin no Jutsu from Miroru, so she was pretty much fully comfortable with the much shorter girl in general. It wasn't really all that difficult for Raika to be comfortable with someone in the first place; if there was one thing that Raika had in common with most other Hyuuga, it was the fact that she seemed inherently very confident in her capabilities, and not just with Taijutsu, but with other things besides. Raika does raise an eyebrow when the shorter teen lets her know that what they're going to be training will be water walking and wall running. They'd already done a bit of athleticism and acrobatic training in the Academy, years ago, so that was her only introduction to any kind of running on walls, which had only been for a short distance and entirely without chakra. She'd never heard of water walking, so that was an entirely new concept to her.

She actually has a bit of a moment when she's told that she should remove the weighted rings, since she feels that if she will probably be using the techniques in combat while she's wearing the rings as well, that she'll need to train it the same way she will in combat. But she also realizes that she can train more with the rings anyways after she's actually learned these things that Miroru is trying to teach her. So instead of putting up an argument like she might have if a member of the Hyuuga clan were to make the same suggestion, the genin unlatches the rings from around her ankles and wrists, putting both sets in her weapon pouch, which could thankfully be removed immediately when they reach the location where the training is supposed to take place.

"Well, you're the sensei after all! And I guess they at least sound like something useful for training. Lead the way, sensei!""

Say what you like about Raika being a meathead, she at least seemed like she would always be ready for some hard training. Her lavender eyes going with determination.

"Alright, then! Onwards to glory and really hard work!" Miroru declared, turning and darting off towards one of the training areas in the Konoha lowlands.

Upon arrival, it became clear why they'd come out this way. There was a broad, shallow lake with a slow slope towards the middle, creating a large area of low-depth shallows in which one could flounder without drowning, and where it would be distinctly advantageous to be on top of the water instead of in it.

"Okay! So! Let's start with the basics. I like to think it's easier to practice water walking before tree climbing, cuz it's less uncomfortable to mess up water walking. Unless you have issues with being soggy. Have you had any baseline practice with either, Raika-san?" Miroru asked brightly, open to hearing what she'd already managed to experience on the matter- if anything! "If you haven't had any prior, we can start right on the edge of the water with the fundamentals. We'll get to practice tree climbing another time, but it's the other half of a coin."

Miroru hopped in place and pointed at her feet. "To stand someplace, you need two things. A surface, and pressure to hold you against it. Normally, we get that from the ground, and gravity. Tree climbing and water walking are fixes for missing one half of the process or the other- where one's a technique to create pressure against a surface to hold yourself there where there wouldn't normally be a pressure, water walking is a technique to create a surface to hold against when normally there wouldn't be a surface. Follow so far?"

Raika follows excitedly behind Miroru, though of course she has to temper how quickly she moves, considering their difference in height and leg length. That said, Raika doesn't have to change her walking gait very much; it seems Miroru is quite quick, despite their differences. At least they reach the training grounds fairly quickly, so they can get started on training these techniques at least. The Hyuuga really has no problem with getting soggy, as that was essentially the only way one exists in a swamp like Kawa. What actually makes her uncomfortable is the use of honorifics from Miroru, and she hopes the redhead doesn't take her lack of their use as a sign of disrespect... She considers using the honorific of "-sensei" to refer to Miroru, but then decides that such sudden changes in her speech would sound so unnatural coming from her as to be nearly as disrespectful as not using them at all. Better to not use them, then, while she's answering her teacher's question about what practice she's had with either technique.

"Ah, the only real training I've had on anything like that was some basic acrobatic wall-running exercises, although the Academy teacher for things like that wasn't really all that interested... I um... climbed trees when I was younger, I guess?"

The fact that Raika was talking about something almost completely unrelated to the use of chakra to climb vertical surfaces or to stand on water should be quite clear to Miroru when she says this. Even if it isn't, it becomes clear to Raika herself that they're not talking about the same thing from the explanation she receives from Miroru about how the water walking is done. The somewhat scientific idea of using chakra to create pressure and a surface to walk on is somewhat confusing conceptually, if only because the genin had never really thought about it before. Judging by the befuddled look on her face, it seems like Raika is only now considering that this might be true, and after a few seconds of consideration, she at least nods, having apparently found no real way to argue against this idea that pressure and a surface are really all that's needed for an able-bodied person to be able to walk.

"I never really thought about it like that, but it sounds right, I guess. But chakra is nearly intangible. How do I walk on something like that?"

In Raika's own experience, chakra didn't have much force behind it, which was why the Jyuken of the Hyuga clan revolves around closing the tenketsu points rather than trying to deal direct damage to an opponent. Before this point, she'd never experienced chakra alone as a physical construction.

"Okay! That's actually helpful! If you've done some of the mundane wall-running stuff, that's actually involving the stuff we just talked about. The techniques you use to get useful steps off a wall is the same stuff. You need a force to keep you in contact with the wall so that your steps have something to push off of, and you need the wall itself TO push off of. So same deal!"

Miroru paused at the mention of the academy teacher. "Not... interested? What do you mean? Like, didn't wanna be there? Or was distracted or..." She couldn't imagine that. Shigure had been so invested in the development of the kids in his class, the whole idea of a bored or disengaged instructor went straight over her head.

She paused and smirked as Raika mentioned chakra being nearly intangible.

"Oh? Is it, though~?"

Miroru BLAZED through a tiny set of handseals and leapt into the air, landing on a solid sheet of chakra. A few more steps, and Raika- from below- could see her running along tiny platforms of pure chakra. And then she hopped back down onto the surface of the lake, stopping with a bit of a ripple in all directions.

"What you MEAN to say is that unformed chakra is almost intangible! But this isn't actually using chakra to stand on. What you're doing is using chakra to push the water into a formation that's stable enough to stand on- or, more specifically, creating patches of chakra under your feet that will do that automatically FOR you. You ever belly flopped into a lake and felt that slap, the sting, of smashing into the water's surface at high speed? THAT'S what you're intensifying- that surface tension! Once it's high enough, the water won't get out of the way when you step on it, and it'll hold your weight!"

Raika is actually a bit surprised that any of her Academy training would be of much use; beyond learning how to use chakra to a certain extent, most of her time in the Academy had seemed droll for her, but now she was learning that even the basic acrobatics taught in the Academy was going to be useful for something other than just invigorating some of the less Taijutsu-inclined children, though Raika hadn't been one of those children herself. She's grilled somewhat on the fact that one of the instructors had seemed bored, and Raika tries to remember that day, though it had been years ago and it had only been a short stint. Then she recalls who it was and what the situation had actually been.

"Ah. It hadn't been an actual official Academy teacher. It was someone that had been invited to assist in a class or two for acrobatics. It had likely just been boring for them to teach about wall-running if they already knew about this tree climbing technique you're talking about..."

That seemed likely enough, at least from Raika's recollection. In any case, her memory reverie is interrupted by Miroru suddenly leaping upwards and running across platforms made from her own chakra, allowing her to sprint across the sky above her. This was actually quite a spectacle, considering Raika's 6'3" body normally towering over the redhead's own. That's really sufficient proof enough for her to realize that not all chakra is simply near-intangible, just chakra that hadn't been focused into a particular form. This was a new concept for Raika, but one that she could latch onto, as the show of it had been quite memorable for her. By the time Miroru lands again, Raika realizes she should have activated her Byakugan to take note of how it was done; that might have gotten this training to go by a bit faster with her Byakugan's ability to track chakra usage and its movements throughout Miroru's body, as well as outside of it when it had been used to make those platforms. Too late now. At least the further lesson on how her chakra can be used to pull together the water under her feet to improve the surface tension isn't lost on the genin, especially with the explanation that it's somewhat similar to a belly-flop into a pool.

"All right then! This should be easy enough!"

Raika activates her Byakugan and watches how Miroru's steps seem to leave behind a little lingering of chakra, although she's floored again by the intense and very dense chakra that Miroru is capable of outputting. She takes her first step on the water, but her combat boot starts to sink in right away, despite how much chakra she's putting out, so she pulls her foot back again at first; no point in getting soaked right away if she didn't have to, after all.

"Ohhhhhhh, that makes sense. If they weren't actually a teacher, then them being there for something so basic could totally have been pretty boring. But that wasn't your fault, obviously, you were just a kid back then," Miroru says as if she isn't all of like 18 months separated from her time at the academy. "And yeah, I can promise every single shinobi in Konoha knows that technique, even if they were teaching over where you were staying back then. So you're probably right on the money."

Miroru watched as Raika's eyes went pale again, studying her movements and chakra, doing her best to intake just how it was that Raika was able to master techniques with such intense rapidity. Granted, her studies didn't tell her much, but it gave her something to do while Raika thought and processed and studied besides just prancing like a pony!

However, this time, despite pronouncing it "easy enough", her foot plunked past the surface. Miroru can't see the chakra, but she can extrapolate the issue by referencing her own failures and studying the way the water rippled. "Okay, so check that out. The ripples from your foot hitting the water, see how they were much denser right when your foot dropped and much lighter after? That's because you got the shape right but the density wrong. There was a barrier there, but you punched through it. If you'd used too little chakra to even start a barrier, the ripples woulda been pretty much normal. Try again! Put some more chakra into it, don't be afraid to make a splash!"

Raika frowns a bit when she realizes that it is not, in fact, "easy enough" as her foot sinks through, but Miroru uses this as a learning opportunity; she definitely sees how the water ripples were more heavy, and then became lighter and less dense after she had removed her leg. Miroru's explanation that she hadn't put enough chakra into it confused Raika at first, but then she feels like a real fool... In imitating Miroru's chakra output exactly, she'd completely neglected both the shape and their relative weight. So while the Byakugan was helpful, it wouldn't always be useful in learning every technique, particularly the kinds of techniques she wasn't already skilled with. Raika takes a deep breath and then expels more chakra from the bottom of her right foot before pressing down gingerly onto the surface of the water. Raika soon realizes that although her combat boots aren't actually fully chakra conductive, they do, in fact, absorb just a little bit of her chakra output as well, and so she extends a little more chakra than she would have guessed necessary.

"Ohhhhh... Ohhhhhh!"

Raika starts feeling more confident, and brings her other foot to bear, extending chakra to both feet as she steps onto the water, before raising both hands in victory... A celebration that has perhaps been started too soon, because as a ripple passes under her boots, she fails to account for the change in surface tension caused by a ripple, breaking the rather feeble platform she'd made for her feet, and falling straight through, so she's now standing mid-shins in the pond water.

"Nonono, you're getting it! Don't lament the failure, celebrate the lesson!" Miroru cheered and threw her hands up in celebration too. "You had it for a moment! You just gotta get used to that little modulation for the shifting water surface! Eventually, you'll find that sweet spot where you can press in just the right amount, and match it to your foot, and then you're really just sort of adjusting your foot to the surface of the water. It's way easier and instinctual, but you gotta get to the point where it's comfortable to use the jutsu like that. You up for trying again? We can make a nice fire and dry your socks before we head back!"



Miroru thought for a moment, then snapped her fingers. "I know! I'll turn into a duck! Then you can chase me around the lake until you get the hang of it! If you catch me, I'll buy... you... some... yakitori!" Miroru took a shot in the dark, guessing what she might like to eat. "... takoyaki? Okonomiyaki? Oyakudon?!"

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"

Raika feels a little disappointed that she'd managed to fall through her attempt, but Miroru explains how she should be accounting for the shifting of the water's surface, and then she realizes something and feels a bit more disappointment in herself: she'd been matching Miroru's flow of chakra to the water, but Miroru probably weighed half as much as she did. With the older genin's feet having a bit more surface area, it was only making up some of the difference, but she needed to be putting out even more chakra to further increase the surface tension for herself. She manages to get up out of the water and this time, she pushes out far more chakra than before, and even manages to step onto the water as though it were a hard surface. She tracks the sight of an approaching ripple, and remembering Miroru's words, she manages to shift her chakra along the curvature of the very tiny wave, allowing it to pass through her stance as she brings her other foot to bear, easily standing at least.

She listens as Miroru lists off potential food treats, and although Raika several years ago might have glared at the Chuunin for suggesting treats for her like a dog for successful training, the Genin she is now instead just gives her own suggestion for a meal.

"Tempura-style crocodile tail."

That was certainly a rare dish in a place like Konoha, but in the swamplands that surrounded Kawa, the price for such a meal was exceedingly cheap, with the numbers of crocodiles seeming to increase regardless of the amount of hunting that went on to keep their numbers somewhere manageable. As it is, crocodile meat, and especially the tail, was considered a common street food in Kawa, and a commoner's favorite food. After a few seconds of unsteady steps, Raika has eventually built up enough confidence to at least keep up a brisk walk before she turns to look at Miroru, giving her a grin before bending her knees like a runner preparing to sprint.

"Tempura style WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?" Miroru croaked, surprised! She squinted, rubbing at her chin a moment, pondering rapidly. "Crocodile tail... they do have big fat tails... is it good?! I've never had any! I don't think enough of them are around the village to hunt as a food source... are there? Maybe I'm misinformed!" She shrugged! "Sure! I'll try it! If we can find some, my treat!"

As Raika got ready, Miroru performed a few handseals leading into the True Transformation jutsu, and grinned at Raika. "Then- ready... set... QUACK!!!!"

She flashed one last seal, and exploded into smoke, only for a particularly orange-plumed duck to go fluttering out the side of the smoke, squawking like a dork as she flapped wildly, skimming the surface in that ugly-effective way that only waterfowl can really make work!

Raika's work was cut out for her- even if she did manage to nail the technique she was still working on, ducks weren't exactly slow, and while Miroru wasn't gonna make it impossible, she had every intention of making Raika work for her fried snack!

... or maybe she'd buy some anyway if they found someplace. Who knew~?

Raika had been struggling at first, but at last, she seems to be starting to get the hang of it, utilizing her chakra control to be able to gradually improve on her ability to walk on water. It's at least somewhat similar to how one learns to walk normally, as she becomes more steady on her feet with each step, and all her work with learning how to precisely control her chakra helps out with her ability to mold the chakra at the bottom of her feet. Despite the first few awkward and slow steps, it seems like her body catches on quickly, while her Byakugan allows her to keep track of every single ripple as it passes along under her feet, until she's keeping watch of them and shifting her chakra almost reflexively. It's almost too easy now that her body has built up a rhythm and a method for focusing the chakra to the bottom of her feet for each step across the water.

The Genin seems somewhat sad that Miroru has apparently never heard of tempura-style crocodile tail, and she decides she's going to have to see if anyone in Konoha sells it, maybe even someone that had managed to escape living in Kawa in order to live in Konoha, or at least some people who had traveled across Hi no Kuni and managed to come back with some recipes of local dishes. Not that it'd be particularly easy to find; the swamp crocodiles never really leave the brackish swamps of Kawa, as the rest of Konoha is fairly temperate woodlands and forests, not dense swampland. Her musings about crocodile tail are interrupted as Miroru makes handseals, and Raika watches how the chakra seems to envelope her body before the final handseal fully transforms her into a duck, and the Chuunin now begins using all the natural tools at the duck's disposal to try and avoid capture by the Hyuuga across the surface of the water.

"Wha-! Hey-! Splashy beast!"

It's something of a surprise that this sudden change doesn't end with Raika falling through the surface of the water, but she seems to have learned some level of reflexive control over her chakra while walking across water, so she instead launches herself forwards at the water fowl. She starts off somewhat unsteady, but with some practice at increasing the speed of how quickly she can spread chakra across one foot after the other, she begins gaining greater speed.

"I gotcha now!"

At this point, Raika takes on a rather more open-armed stance, looking ready to leap at Miroru in her duck form as she races across the pond surface, learning to cut her turns more tightly across the surface of the water by actually pushing along the outer edges of the curve as she cuts her turns.

"WAKK!"

Miroru had no words for Raika now, only quacks! She'd gotten the hang of the basics quickly enough, and now could at least maneuver, if clumsily, and that meant Miroru could put up a fight with the Hyuuga girl hot on her fluffy, feathered heels!

Thoughts flit through her head as she makes it a challenge for the Genin. Splashy beast? How did she know crocodiles but not ducks? Maybe there were other interesting mismatches in what Raika did and didn't know. That was a curiosity she wanted to explore sometime.

For now, though, she focused to making the Hyuuga work for her capture! Weaving lines, across deliberately choppy chunks of the lake, forcing her to adapt to needing to change directions on shifting surfaces, all to display she knew enough of the technique to utilize it in unpredictable situations!

Before long, though, she allowed herself to get captured, and poofed back to normal, draped in Raika's arms dramatically! "Alas, the heroine, fair that she was, found herself slain by the clever hunter's wiles. And so closes the tale of... uh... the training we're doing today!" Squirming, she angled to drop back onto her feet and rub her hands together.

"Now. How about that exotic tempura~?"

"Just don't give up on me! We can figure this out!"
