HISTORY

[1010] Kajiri’s parents were both shinobi of Kumogakure’s medical corps. His father was considered a modernist of the Shitai clan, although he still kept strong ties with the traditionalists through his older brother who kept with the old ways. The boy’s mother hailed from no clan, but was a respected medical practitioner in her own right. When he was born, he was determined to possess the Shitai kekkei genkai, and so it was his father who retired into the reserves in order to give him the proper care that he needed. These tasks included bleeding the family hog to add a little splash of red to his baby bottles and handling a nasty teething phase.

His retirement also meant more time to handle clan affairs and an attempt to pull him back in by the traditionalists of his family, though his love for his wife kept him bound to the village. Still, this meant for more frequent visits to the Shitai compound and early exposure to the traditionalists for Kajiri throughout his youth.


[1015] At the age of five, Kajiri's dreams of becoming a shinobi were dashed by the plague. Though his family were modernists among the Shitai, they saw no dishonor in holding him back from enrollment since hadn't sworn service to Kumogakure yet. He was sent to in Shitai compound beyond the village with his traditionalist aunt and uncle so that his parents could better serve the medical corps. At the same time, his cousin Nobusuma (aka Nobu) was pressured by his parents into abandoning his service as a Kumogakure genin and brought home. His uncle was one of the primary caretakers of the prison that held the clan's "Lost Children."

Nobusuma was seven years Kajiri's senior (twelve at the time of the plague), and the sudden loss of his rank of genin brought about a darkness within him. Charged by his father with seeing after Kajiri, the boy became an object that Nobu channeled all of his resentment and frustration towards. The relationship between them was complicated. Nobusuma possessed the knowledge that Kajiri wanted and was instructed to give him informal lessons. The former genin obliged this at his father's command, and so a student-teacher bond was formed between them, but Nobusuma hated him.

In the first several months Nobusuma's only crimes against him were petty. The packaged blood meant for Kajiri was often stolen for the older boy's snacks, and he encouraged Kajiri to sustain on rats until he earned the respect of the clan. Kajiri was told any sort of tattling would result in Nobusuma refusing to train him any further. So, for a time he would go malnourished.

Later in that same year, Nobu snuck him into the necropolis beneath the compound for "special training". Kaji was told the story of the "Lost Children" and that the true reason his parents sent him here was because he had the symptoms. Nobu convinced him further by bringing him low enough into the necropolis that he could hear the sound of the afflicted crying for blood in the distant depths beneath them. In fear, Kaji asked how he might escape his fate, and Nobu convinced him that his own blood held the cure.

Nobu freely allowed Kajiri to bite him. Then, he gave an account to other members of the clan of Kajiri attacking him in a craze. He was soon after brought into a rehabilitation center within the clan's prison below the necropolis. He was also tattooed with a tracking number across his neck and held under medical examination for months to be studied as an anomaly: it was unusual for a child so young to be afflicted by the clan's curse. The tale was even spun to his parents, and they urged Kajiri's uncle to continue trying rehabilitation. It was agreed to since he seemed to be docile.

During his time there, he'd see several basket cases come in and within days be taken away to the prisons below as hopeless cases. One such person was a young adult who lunged at him and had to be pulled away by guards. After a time and several tests, it was determined that Kajiri had been successfully rehabilitated against the odds.

[1016] Kajiri was brought back up, but Nobu claimed fear of being attacked as a means to avoid having to be responsible for him again. Kajiri had also gone through a lot of therapy in rehabilitation to accept his "delusions" leading up to the attack. Due to this, he lived with guilt over what he had done to his older cousin. Though he was kept at a distance, Kajiri would again see Nobu in the light of a role model.

Among other children of the clan, Kajiri had little hope for kinship because of the rumors that circled around him. His last year in the compound was nearly as quiet and isolated as most of his time in rehabilitation.

[1017] With the end of the plague, Kajiri was finally reunited with his parents and returned to Kumogakure. For a year, he was told he was waitlisted to enter the shinobi academy due to a high demand. However, the truth was that the clan was having an internal argument about whether or not he should be allowed to enlist. Kajiri's frustration about his ever-delayed future really took hold of him that year. When he was away at the clan compound he felt like he was in another world. Now that he was home he could see children his age walking in groups to school while he was forced to stay home. Nobu's service deferment came to an end and part of the arrangements between his father and uncle was that Nobu would have a place to stay under their roof between missions. He'd continue to be exposed to his older cousin on occasion, though he'd find himself ignored and left with his feelings of guilt.

[1018] Kajiri is finally allowed to enter academy after the clan decides to track his progress in secret, and without divulging his incident with the village authorities. At the later half of the age of eight he gets a somewhat late start, but so did many of the children he went to academy with. He quickly became known as a classroom bully, emulating the ill-will of his cousin towards his classmates.
