Raika stands tall next to the caravan, having been assigned a mission along with her teammate Kai to escort the caravan along its supply route to the border town in Konoha in order to keep it safe from bandits. It's still somewhat odd to Raika that the bandits even still exist with how often they get beaten back, but she figures some people will always need to feed themselves, and banditry might sometimes work for these people... until it doesn't, that is. At least Raika feels ready to kick some heads and break some noses, although she still feels a bit self-conscious about having hit Kai so hard that she hurt him during their first ever spar. She also still hasn't even met the third genin on their team, but maybe she'll see them sometime soon; they still didn't have a Jounin sensei for their team, either.

"Well, we'll figure it out anyways."

The Genin felt a bit silly talking to herself, and the horse she's standing next to shakes its head like it's laughing at her for doing so. She steps away from it so she can move closer to the gate guards of Konoha, standing proudly but also wishing them well on their way out of the village. She gives them a quick goodbye before turning to Kai and giving him a brief nod. She's currently wearing her coveralls all the way up, meaning that only her head, neck, and hands are actually visible outside of the dark grey clothing, with her headband laying on top of the zipper while tied loosely around her neck. Her straight black hair is, as always, pulled back in a ponytail with one strand hanging down the right side of her face. Her purple eyes are pointed straight ahead, but once they're out of sight of Konoha, she'll likely activate her Byakugan to be able to keep track of the area around themselves. Her own combat boots seem to make fine work of the dirt underneath her feet. She also towers over most of the other women and even most of the men in the caravan, and her arms and legs move quite swiftly for being weighed down by the Hung Gar rings on her wrists and ankles as she prods the group to start their journey.

"Let's get a move on! We're not getting any younger."

The supplies must arrive in good condition so that work can take place in the border town to improve it.

[Uchiha Kai]

Kai was, of course, following close behind. Or rather, he would be, were he not currently trying to nap on top of one of the carts. He was in his thick steel armor, trying not to waste his energy by walking around. Not that he needed the energy, he could make good trips across the land now with his plated armor, which was held over his rather standard looking clothes.

A jacket, that covered everything other then his neck, head and hands, and a pair of black pants, that covered everything down to his boots. That was an interesting thing between Raika and Kai. They both wore boots. Maybe they just really liked combat boots?

"Ugh. Not so loud, I'm trying to sleep up here." A shout back towards Raika as he slid onto his side, looking down at her from his perch above them all.

"You know, you have a weird fashion sense." He'd point out, crossing his arms over eachother as he leaned his head down on it.

"Like, I wear armor, so it makes sense. But why do you show so little skin? If I had a body like yours, nobody would ever hear the end of it." He was, perhaps, not taking this too seriously, but he knew the two of them were strong enough that any bandits they came across would be made short work of.

This was going to be a long trip.

She rolls her eyes a little as Kai complains about how loud she is as he tries to sleep, with his laziness matching quite well with Raika's high energy mindset. Maybe this was why they were put on a team; she could motivate Kai, and Kai would force her to pull back a little instead of going full force into brick walls when she let her forward momentum get the better of her. Or maybe they just liked to make sure that the genin were suffering, like they had to when they had been Genin. There was no telling with old folks.

"Weird fashion sense? Kinda rich coming from you, tin man."

Raika raises an eyebrow as Kai seems to switch his tact to a compliment about her body, but they reach the edge of the last line of sight with Konohagakure, and she activates her Byakugan, causing veins to stand out on either side of her face and the violet hue of her eyes to somewhat disappear behind the increased whiteness that greatly enhances her ability to see nearly everything, though the Byakugan could still end up being overworked by fast speeds or sudden movements that her normal eyes wouldn't be able to track.

"Yeah, but you don't need to show your skin nearly as much as you are now: your fly is down."

It wasn't, actually, but the Genin smirks a bit as she says it; from his position, Kai wouldn't be able to see her smirking at the joke she was playing at the expense of his dignity, and in front of the client, too. Even as she jokes with the Uchiha, she still keeps her vigilance for any of those bandits between Konoha and the border town, though she suspected that the bandits would become much more active as day turns to night, or as they get deeper into the forests surrounding the village. Still, the idea of not wearing so much baggy clothing was an interesting one... But she had her reasons.

"These coveralls kept me alive in Kawa. The fabric is too thick to be bitten through, so most of the animals there would rather leave me alone after trying once. Besides, it doesn't take more than a minute or two to pull them off if things get serious, and you don't want to give an opponent any advantage, like letting them know from a glance what I can do..."

A long trip, indeed.

[Uchiha Kai]

He rolled his eyes back when he was called a tin man. Yeah, he wore armor, what of it? The joke was on her when they got shot at by arrows, and Kai was there standing in front of her, blocking them like the brave shinobi he was.

At least, that's how it ran through his head, if he ignored she was a perfectly capable shinobi on her own who would probably end up saving his life instead, as she commented on his fly. He blushed suddenly, looking down between his armor to try and see if it really was or not, moving his hand down and-- Ah. She was teasing him. He looked up at her with a sense of stink-eye, tilting his head in her direction.

"Yeah, real funny. That's just like you to try and sneak a peak though." It was nothing like her, but in front of the clients, who were now laughing, he'd get his own jab in on her. In truth, he was complimenting her body for its physical ability- The actual attractiveness of her, while not lost on him, would feel ingenuine with how little he truly knew about her.

"... Didn't know there was a story behind them, though- But I dunno... If we're going that route, I think opponents might end up so distracted by that part of you they might totally slip up and let you ram a palm into their ribcage..." He dwelled back on their training engagement as he stifled a laugh.

In truth, he should have been scared of her. She kicked his ass, she was terrifying, and she could probably kill him from here. But perhaps it was the comradery, the fact that she was on his team, or the fact that he had a sense, even need to keep her and his other teammates safe, that made him feel not a bit of fear with her by his side, which probably let him push himself a bit further to tease.

"... What was it like in Kawa, anyways?" His conversational tone shifted from all of that to a more neutral voice, as he stared out over the caravan guards with an idle hum, though his awareness wasn't exactly going anywhere.

Raika can't help but to smirk when she watches Kai actually checking his fly, though she doesn't have to turn her head to watch, thanks to her Byakugan. It really was fun to tease him, especially because neither of them are as uptight as their clans would have liked them to be; it somehow made it feel even more subversive for her, and it made it even more funny that he had actually panicked a bit and had to check his fly. She raises an eyebrow when he jokingly suggests that it's in her nature to try and get a look, but she doesn't deny it in front of the clients, finding it quite nice to finally be able to cut loose a little bit, something she had never done since she had left Kawa and the few friends she'd managed to make there.

"Yeah, well, I have a feeling you'd be sneaking more than a peek if you had these eyes for yourself. Too bad you've got an inferior pair, huh?~"

She can't help but to actually giggle when he suggests that her own attractive body could be distracting enough to get any potential bandits to let their guard down so she could smash her palm right into them. The memory still brings up the memory of their first spar, which she was a little bit embarrassed about, but she had eventually come to terms with the fact that she'd also been able to find and help fix his injuries; that somewhat made up for it, right? She figured he'd been starting off going a bit easy on her, and had restrained himself from using the Katon ninjutsu that the Uchiha clan was famous for, which she wouldn't really have had a good counter against. In a way, they had mutual respect for the skills the other person had.

Then the conversation changes to Kawa, and Raika's face hardens instantly, her eyes and head pointed forwards, but her Byakugan keeping track of the area all around them, still on high alert for incoming chakra signatures that weren't part of their caravan. It was a little bit of a shell game, though, because the caravan was using a clever tactic to avoid having any particular wagon from being successfully picked out as the most valuable wagon: by sending the lead wagon to the back every hundred meters or so, the positions of the wagons was in constant shift.

"Kawa... It was a harsh, unfeeling brutality. It was a deadly creature of its own, and it consumes everything, but only slow enough that the creatures that live there could produce offspring of their own to keep feeding it. It wasn't evil, but it wasn't good, either. It just was..."

Kai rolled his eyes as she tried to say hers were 'better'. He totally missed the part where he'd be taking peeks if he could, because well... I mean, Raika was hot as hell, sure, but Kai only had eyes for Sachi, as it stood. He slowly sat up, glancing down and over at her with a hum as he rubbed his chin.

"Maybe. You'd probably like it, too. Anyways..." He got the last word in, or so he thought, as he stood up, now atop the cart as he got a good look at the area around them. It was weird how many bandits and pirates there were in Hi no Kuni, and Kai idly wondered if other countries had to deal with these constant thieves and tricksters. Were they doing something wrong to produce so many bad eggs?

When she got serious and spoke about Kawa, though, Kai knew he fucked up. He bit his tongue for a moment, glancing over at the girl with a sigh and a look of understanding. In truth, it wasn't like he'd ever be able to truly comprehend what her time was like in Kawa. He could only compare it to the experiences of pain he'd been through- Of which only one came to mind.

"I'm glad you made it out in one piece, then. For someone who went through hell, you seem to have escaped without any physical scars." That wasn't really flirting anymore, it was a genuine compliment to the fact that she really did look rather pristine for someone who had been through such a thing. That said, Kai knew more than anyone that there was still trauma that could be unpacked, and as his Sharingan activated under the pretense that he was watching for traps, they subtly watched her movements on the side here and there, reading her body language.

"...Do you still think about it?" It was a dumb question to most. Most people thought about the bad things they'd been through. But in a selfish way, Kai was seeking validation here. Validation for his own trauma. That it was okay to let that past sit on your shoulders, even if it really wasn't.

Raika lets him go ahead and get the last word in on the topic of taking peeks, although she doesn't really have much interest in him outside of friendship or as a teammate, though he was a pretty good teammate, by her estimation. But the conversation had changed after the Kawa question, so there was no real time to revisit it after such a question that brought back so much hurt and trauma that it made her chest seize a little. Her body language, viewed through the Sharingan, would likely see more stiff body movements, like she's just going through the motions, although her eyes were still sharply watching the caravan and their surroundings.

"Hm? Oh. Yes, I think about it often. But... If I hadn't gone to Kawa, I wouldn't have become as strong as I am. Never let an opportunity to be defeated slip past you, either. It's still an opportunity for victory through growth..."

Raika frowns suddenly and rushes ahead of the lead wagon, halting it in its tracks and forcing the rest of the caravan to stop. Then the Genin pulls a kunai from her weapon pouch and throws it hard into what looks like packed earth that resembles the rest of the packed dirt path in front of them, but the kunai cuts through the fabric that had been stretched over a pit, one just tall enough that the horses would have fallen in and likely broken their legs. With the trap foiled, she watches the other bandits leap back and away from the edges of the road, but she doesn't bother chasing them; for now, with their initial plans foiled, seen through as if by some kind of magic, they appear to have lost their nerve, but Raika knows better.

"Chasing them will just end up with us no longer able to protect the caravan. We'll let them go for now, but they might show back up with a bigger force. If we're lucky, they'll be led by their leader."

She feels a little bit odd giving orders to someone with the same rank as her, but she'd also been dealing with similar bandit tactics for years in Kawa. This was one of the basic methods of taking down a cavaran quickly. Instead, Raika begins guiding the caravan wagons around the hole, with just enough space for her to put some of her muscle to good use; the cavaran wagons were just a bit too wide, and so the wheel would invariably end up getting caught in the hole, requiring Raika and a few other workers to pull up just enough to get the wheel to roll up over the edge of the pit.

[Uchiha Kai]

Idly, Kai listened to her speak about what she thought of it. Her ideas on the trauma she went through- How it made her stronger. In his mind, he correlated it automatically to his own experiences, the disaster of his previous team, and the nightmare that came with it.

Was he stronger for it? He really wondered. Growth... What did he grow into? Sure, he unlocked his clans Kekkai Genkai, but at what price...


It seemed that line of thinking would need a plug on it for now, as Raika clearly saw something. Without missing a beat, she slammed her Shuriken into the dirt before htem, letting it fall out to reveal the ravine before them.

"Not the first time I've seen one of these. Not even the first time this week..." He growled, standing up. He seemed moderately frustrated that his concentration had been thrown away, as his fingers twisted on his weapon, still stood upon the cart.

His armor was a bit more of a menacing sight when he was fully standing in it- It was made to look that way, after all, proudly showing his heritage as a Uchiha, as well as hiding most of his features beneath its plate. For all anyone watching knew, he could have been a Genin or a Jounin- All bets were off when it was tough to see the man behind the metal.

But that glare- The glare of his Sharingan from beneath his helmet- Was enough of a batch to likely scare off anyone who wasn't at least strong enough to fight a genin. The Tomoe in his eyes did not lie- Between himself and Raika, if anyone decided to attack them, there would be not a shred of mercy.

"...Hopefully so. I'm going to drag him behind the cart by his neck, and pin the rest of them to the sides." He said this loudly, very loudly, in fact. He hoped the others would hear it- And perhaps convince a few of them this juice wasn't worth the squeeze. It was one thing to face down a powerful shinobi, another thing altogether to face one who appeared to be a sadist who enjoyed torture and pain.

Raika waits until she doesn't see any of the bandits remaining before she helps the rest of the caravan past the hole those bandits had dug, so thankfully they weren't ambushed during their fording of the hole. Her Byakugan also catches sight of Kai's menacing figure above the cart, and she feels certain now that he had definitely been holding back in their spar, for her sake. She can also see the fire of chakra in his eyes as the Sharingan activates, and something tells her the bandits had seen that, too. Whether they were more terrified of the threats or interested in trying to get those infamous Sharingan eyes for themselves, it remained to be seen. She rather hoped for the latter, because combat risked losing some members of the caravan, and it would be unlikely that the bandits would get anything but death for their trouble. Instead of worrying too much about that, she smirks at Kai once they've got all the wagons past the trap.

"I'm not entirely sure merchants would much appreciate such an ugly trophy of the bandit captain's body. And I'm not sure how much they'd like armor made from corpses."

She even lets out a little giggle to show that she was joking at the thought, but she has to admit that he'd looked very heroic standing atop the wagon and throwing threats through his suit of armor like that. More than likely, the bandits really lacked much that could get through armor such as that, and if they couldn't stop or kill the Uchiha, they probably wouldn't even bother trying to attack the caravan. At least she hoped that would be the case, and it seems like it might have not even been a planned ambush on their convoy, as most of the next hour was silent.

"Over/under that we actually managed to scare them off of us?"

Kai stared out over the grounds as the bandits ran, and he slowly calmed down as he glanced over at Raika with a determined shrug.

"Unlikely. If they are desperate enough to attack this..." He tapped the supplies held in the caravan beneath him. "They are desperate enough to attack us regardless." He frowned, as his hands wrapped tightly around the grip of his weapon as he kneeled over the forward end of the cart and quietly made some preparations.

It wasn't much, just dislocating some crates to be used as Kawarimi's in the event of a fight. No point in not having back ups. As he stood up, he used his Sharingan to locate the less dense patches of forest ahead of them- These would likely be points of ambush, as these didn't seem like well organized pirates. Just desperate bandits.

With all of that in mind, however, he kept himself prepared atop the cart, pushing forward his own to lead. If they were to be attacked, they'd have to attack him at the front- And if they struck at the back, Raika would be fast enough to intercept them. It was suicide either way, unless their opponents had some sort of secret weapon to fight them, like an actual Shinobi.

Kai's thought process does not inspire confidence in a nice, quiet mission as Raika had hoped for, but she can't help but to agree that it's likely they'll just try a different strategy, likely an ambush, just not a trap. Although the next hour is quiet in regards to any attempt by the bandits in the forest for an attack, it isn't long after before the genin catches sight of a group of bandits on either side of the road, trying to keep completely still in the dense foliage; if Raika raised the alarm, they would notice and likely try to jump out at them or run away and try a completely different tactic. Even worse, the front wagon of the caravan is preparing to move to the back, one of the times that the caravan is actually the most vulnerable, since the wagon moving back ends up temporarily grouping up the caravan as much as they can be. Instead of putting out a loud alarm to alert everyone, including the bandits, she silently alerts the other guards to the bushes, without directly pointing them out, and she stops the caravan from its usual shuffle. After doing this, she moves back a bit until she's right up next to Kai's own lookout wagon.

"Do you want the left side or the right side?"

With the bandits' comparative stillness, the Uchiha might not have noticed them, and she knows the Sharingan can sometimes take its toll on the one that has it activated all the time, so she wasn't certain he was aware of the danger. Thankfully, the groups just ahead were rather small in number, but she can also see that they have at least one man with a horn on each side, and she relays this information back up to Kai.

"We're gonna want to take out the ones with the horns. They're probably the ones meant to alert the main forces of the arrival of the caravan or to call for reinforcements."

Not that she thought Kai would need this explained to him, only confirming to him that she was aware of what needed to be done. As it is, she can feel her own muscles tensing with anticipation as they start to approach the pincer formation created by the pair of four bandits on either side of the road. If Kai wasn't here with her, she'd have had a much harder time taking these bandits down.

Thankfully for the two of them, Kai was someone who spent a good amount of time training with his Sharingan active. The drain, while quite incredible on a lesser shinobi, was not quite as painful on him as it could be- Especially in its single tomoe state.

Still, Kai already had an idea sprung about in his mind, as he gently placed his weapon down, glancing over at Raika.

"Allow me." He said simply, as he began weaving a set of handseals together. Typically, one would expect him to jump into close range combat- Most of his companions had no idea he knew how to do anything else, after all- But a careful eye like Raika's would have noticed his practicing of handseals now and then, and his constant state of calm.

It was a combination one often knew as a Ninjutsu practitioner, and in this moment, he was going to use it liberally. The seventh seal held itself for a long, strong moment, as a well of flames built up in the Uchiha's lungs.

The bandits had sealed their fate by coming back. A burst of flame would release from the Uchiha's mouth, in the shape of a massive, roaring dragon. It seared down the central roadway before bursting into four split dragons- A technique that was difficult to pull off without mastery.

But Kai went beyond simple mastery. His ability to control his Chakra was something he'd trained from a very young age- The perfect encapsulation of the phrase 'Smarter, not Harder'. In this way, he was able to control the katon technique to split at just the right time- Aiming to smash through the bushes and trees and attempt to incinerate the two horn-wielding men where they stood.

Sure, the technique was only half as strong due to having to hit two targets at once, but half strength of a B-Rank jutsu from a Uchiha was still enough to put most non-shinobi into the ground. And if they fought back? Well...

As the flames parted, he'd bend over, grabbing his Glaive as he stood up and tall, watching the presumably burning forest around them.

"Let the games begin."

Raika manages to avoid jumping straight to the bandits when they start approaching their hiding spots, but Kai suggests that she allow him to give the first strike. She holds back on her desire to launch herself at the enemies on the right side of the caravan while her Byakugan keeps track of him performing handseals while also building up his chakra inside of his lungs. It's only after building up a significant amount of chakra inside that she can tell that it's going to be a Katon technique the moment before he lets loose that chakra in the form of a stream of flame that becomes a long, twisting dragon made of fire. Now she can see for certain that Kai was holding back in their spar while they were training. She watches as the dragon splits apart in order to be able to hit the two horn-bearers on either side of the road, and she considers herself lucky that the Byakugan is not so easily blinded by flames as the two hiding spots become swallowed by fire.

As Kai retrieves his glaive and stands, Raika smirks as she sees the bandits beginning to panic, and she readies herself for the combat she's about to involve herself in.

"Remind me not to piss you off."

With that, she leaps directly at the nearest bandit, trying to smash into him with a flying kick that would launch him several meters away, with her kick aimed not at the bandit himself, but at the tree behind him in order to slam him back into it and likely knock him unconscious. With Raika's weights on her ankles, such a strike would probably have such a strong effect. Her attention immediately goes to the other two bandits, who she would reach towards in an attempt to grab them by their respective faces, in order to crash them into each other, which would likely knock both out before they could even remember what their plan had originally been.

Of course, with the excitement of the attack and the gouts of flame now razing the forest, any other bandits would likely be drawn towards or start fleeing from the area, so she orders the caravan ahead; she quickly joins them, ready to fight their way through the bandits' forest or escape without ever meeting another combatant. She could hope for the latter, but she felt it was unlikely that they would all have given up.

Kai may have been holding back, but really, it was for her own safety. Again, he wasn't really wanting to crisp her during a sparring match. Better to keep her ego high then deflate it with a fireball jutsu.

Standing up straight, he'd stretch his back out, the clank of the metal armor underneath him as the Uchiha glanced towards the forest. It seems they didn't get the hint. That was fine. It just meant more bodies for him to stack up. He hopped off the cart as a pair of bandits marched for one of the supply carts.

"You should have run." He didn't really give them so much of a warning this time, instead pulling his weapon back, and swinging it forward in a heavy arc- Pulling out the Chakra flow about halfway through the swing, turning his deadly slice into a smashing hammer that aimed to crush both figures into a firey pulp.

Even if it didn't get them both, it wasn't as if he was a one trick wonder. His spin turned him completely around, which in some ways opened him up for a strike to the back- But it was a calculated risk, to keep the momentum up on his weapon as he tore into the earth beneath the remaining bandit. With his glaive wedged into the ground, the opposing man seemed to have an opening, rushing forward with his knife- Before Kai slammed into the ground, burning flames lighting the bandits clothes on fire and sending him a few feet backwards.

Pulling the glaive out of the earth, he would pull it up to the man who was now screaming in agony on the ground, before silencing him with a powerful crash of his weapon- Aiming to impale the burning man on the ground as he turned back towards Raika.

Hopefully she had been as successful with her endeavors as he had been, though, knowing her, and knowing how weak these bandits were, he had no doubt in his mind she would have no trouble cleaning up the proverbial trash, so to speak.

Raika grunts with the force she's using to slam her fists into the bandits, using her own strength and the additional weight provided by the Hung Gar rings to improve the damage she can do as her muscles flex hard with the effort of her strikes. With the bandits on her end now dead, she takes a moment to check all around them with her Byakugan, but she doesn't see any more bandits within the area, so it seems like beyond these few highwaymen, there weren't any further enemies for quite a good distance, and certainly no chakra levels nearby that were human, judging by the size and general amount of chakra she could sense. She sighs with disappointment, though. Whoever their leader was, he probably hadn't shown up at all, so they were probably not going to be harassed much more for the rest of the journey. With the bandits that they had met with now dead, the Genin chased after the caravan once more, her muscles sore from the long distance they'd already traveled.

"Well, that's a bit disappointing. But hey, I think we're getting close to the border town, so the mission is basically done."

Raika wasn't just saying it, honestly. She could see the village just around the next bend, though only just, and only because her Byakugan was still active. Her doujutsu barely registers in its drain on her chakra with the level of control she has over her own chakra pool, so she had intended on using it for the entirety of the mission. Now, though, they had gotten too close to the border town and scared off the bandits too much for them to likely try anything else, so she turns her head to look at Kai and gives him a big smile as the caravan turns the corner to see the torches lighting up the area along the road from where the forest opens up to where the town entrance is.

"That's a mission complete right there!"

Raika finally deactivates her Byakugan as the caravan rides on into town, and she tugs the Hung Gar rings off her wrists and ankles before heading off to the inn to get both of them a pair of rooms for the night. Dusk was just a little too late in her estimation, and they'd just made enemies of the bandits; they could both leave in the morning.
