As such it seemed worth celebrating, so she popped into a cafe to get a little pastry and a tasty drink, and then she spent twenty minutes chatting with the baker about whether or not his business would benefit from a shop cat before it was politely pointed out to her that she was very, very late for work. Barrelling into the classroom with a donut in her mouth, the lead instructor gave her a stern glare—luckily she’d burst in while the kids were beginning to split up for small group training, so she hadn’t interrupted anything important. "Miyake-san, you’re leading the genjutsu group today,” he said, rubbing his brow. "And please get that out of your mouth.” Mimi inhaled the rest of her donut in two big bites, and then hopped over to the genjutsu group… only to find a party of one. Yugao Uka, the sole student in this particular classroom focusing on genjutsu today. She peered around to see if any other students were going to be joining them, and when she saw nary a peep or inquisitive eye cast their way, Mimi perched her petite form on top of a nearby desk. With a deft sleight of hand trick she withdrew another donut from within her big rain jacket, offering it up to her lone trainee. "Just Uka and Mimi today, hm?” Her tail swished, her legs swinging idly. "Whatcha wanna work on? Any new genjutsu Uka wants to show off?” Yūgao Uka -- 267

She glanced up from her seated position, a subtle smile playing on her lips as Mimi offered her the extra donut. She accepted it graciously, appreciating the unexpected treat. "Thanks, Miyake-sensei. You always know how to make training more interesting," Uka remarked, her tone light-hearted. "And Momo," Uka added, pointing at the staffed toy that was used as a way to transport Uka's butterflies and moths.

Taking a thoughtful bite from her donut, Uka considered Mimi's question. "Well, there's this new illusion technique I've been practicing. It's inspired by the way the moth's wings look. I thought it might be useful for slowing down the enemy or creating some kind of diversion," she explained, her eyes gleaming with enthusiasm.

Uka stood up, gesturing for a bit of space between them. "I'd love to show it to you and get some feedback. It's a bit tricky, but I think it has potential," she added, her hands forming the needed hand seal. As she performed the technique, a group of small-sized moths flew out of Momo's mouth and flattered quite close to Mikio's eyes, techically, as the moths fluttered around, they would release a fine dust that induced a mild genjutsu upon contact with her eyes. Mikio then should perceive a temporary distortion of her vision, as if a mysterious veil has been cast over her surroundings, making it challenging to see clearly.

But it was only an E-rank jutsu, and one Uka was still perfecting so whether anything would happen or not was left up to fate.

CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED "Uka, Mimi, and Momo,” Mikio corrected herself agreeably, reaching over to give the little plushie a gentle pat on the head—but not too hard, so that she didn’t disturb the delicate insects within! Mikio wiggled back on her perch, rolling off the top of the desk and plopping into the chair tucked neatly behind it, giving Uka the space she asked for. Resting her chin in her palms, she watched with sparkling intensity as moths fluttered out of Momo’s mouth and surrounded her head. Her tail lashed erratically; one hand reached up instinctively to bat at the tiny creatures, though none came to harm. Then: dust! Mikio sneezed, delicate and adorable. When her eyes opened the world seemed unclear, distorted—like she was looking at the classroom through a gauzy curtain. "It’s pretty!” she said, looking around with open curiosity. "Hard to fight when everything’s squiggly. Can Uka-ko affect Mimi’s ears, too?” One soft, droopy ear twitched, as if to look at Uka. "Genjutsu is scary when you can’t trust your senses. Mimi has good eyes and good ears, but if both are turned off…” she shook her head, wiggled her fingers in front of her eyes, trying to discern the space between them. Uka grinned at Mikio's enthusiastic response, appreciating her sensei's willingness to engage in the training with such zeal. It did not take long for a handful of delicate Yugao butterflies to fly out from Momo. The butterflies fluttered around, their wings whispering as they landed on various surfaces.

As the butterflies landed on Mikio and fluttered around her, Uka activated the Chou no Hibiki genjutsu. The moment one of the butterflies made contact with Mikio, the illusion took hold. Suddenly, echoing footsteps surrounded Mikio, creating a phantom sensation that someone was pacing around her.

CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED Mikio blinked as her vision cleared and the moths fluttered away. Her instincts took over, unable to contain herself for a second longer, and she swiped at one of the insects, catching its furry body carefully in between her hands and cooing at it as gently as if she were holding a little baby kitten. Then: butterflies! Mikio released the moth in favor of looking at the sudden cacophony of color with round, delighted eyes; she hardly even noticed when a few alighted on her shoulders and hair, the only indication that something had changed being the sound of sudden pacing when there was no pacing to be seen. The rest of the classroom was bustling and noisy, filled with the dull thunks of wooden training swords clacking against each other and the puffs of smoke as students practiced ninjutsu techniques, but no one was immediately around them to create that particular sound. It made Mikio’s hair stand on end, soft pink fur of her tail bristiling as she tried and fail to identify a nonexistent threat. "Mimi doesn’t like it,” she said, but she said it with a bright, approving smile. "That means it works! Why doesn’t Uka-ko try both at once? Uka exclaimed, filled with confidence and vigor, and so Mikio leaned forward with her elbows dug into her knees and her chin in her hands and watched with wide golden eyes. Moths and butterflies both fluttered out of the stuffed toy on Uka’s shoulder, dancing around Mikio’s head in another hypnotic weave—but as Mikio’s keen feline eyes watched Uka try to weave the handseals, it seemed not quite as fine-tuned as before. More clumsy, and while there was definitely something happening along the smooth curve of Mikio’s brain, she didn’t think it was quite what Uka was going for. "Hmm…” Mikio tapped her chin with a finger thoughtfully. "Mimi thinks it was Uka-ko’s timing. Handseals and chakra are really important and specific to each jutsu Uka-ko uses! So trying to mix them up is just going to make a sad jumble instead of a nice song. Mimi thinks Uka-ko should try to use one genjutsu, then the other genjutsu, but both of them are in Mimi’s eyes and ears at once. Okay?” While certainly no genjutsu expert, Mikio was something of an idiot-savant when it came to the broad-strokes concepts, and it seemed quite clear and obvious to her that if one stronger technique was able to impact multiple senses, then two weaker techniques should be able to impact one sense each, separately—basic math! Simple was better, and Mikio was the simplest of creatures! She waited patiently as Uka readied herself, more than receptive to the genjutsu once it arrived. The visual distortion was not quite as off-putting as it had been the first time, and she dangled her legs, swaying lightly from side to side as she wanted for the second of Uka’s one-two punch—the much more distressing auditory illusion. But it didn’t land quite the same—Mikio scrunched up her nose, her entire face crinkling as she tried to make sense of what was happening in her brain. The sound wasn’t the subtle footstep of a pacing enemy but rather something else altogether—there was still sound, but it was annoying more than threatening. Both sensations disappeared after a moment as Uka dropped the technique and Mikio vigorously shook her head like she was trying to get water out of her ears. "Try again!” she said brightly, undeterred by this slightest of roadblocks. "Just because something didn’t work doesn’t mean it’s a bad or wrong idea, it just means it didn’t work! CONSEQUENCES BE DAMNED Uka took a deep breath in front of her and Mikio breathed in tandem, mimicking her young friend’s slow inhale and slower exhale, a sympathetic action thoughtlessly performed. She was more than happy to render herself victim to all sorts of genjutsu, and while the auditory one was upsetting and made her hairs stand on end, it was something she was willing to endure for the benefit of a sweet young student just trying to learn. Mikio’s visual perception of the world around her began to warp once again, a sensation that was now becoming banal and acceptable; less acceptable was the smooth, subtle introduction of those pacing footsteps. An unpleasant shiver ran down Mikio’s spine and to the tip of her tail, and she shook herself out to rid herself of the feeling… but it persisted for as long as Uka held her concentration. "Uka-ko did it!” Mikio hollered, a mite too loudly to compensate for the sound in her periphery, as if she could drown it out herself. "Mimi-sensei knew you could!! Good job!!” A brief moment of reprieve as Uka released the genjutsu; Mikio beamed at her, swaying happily back and forth on her perch. It was the best feeling, she thought, to be helpful! To help someone get where they needed to go! With that in mind, Mikio would gladly play victim for the remainder of the lesson time, letting Uka practice the one-two waltz-like timing of layering her techniques without so much as a peep of complaint.
