After having successfully attempted to mold Son Goku’s chakra into a shroud with Lady Shuka’s help, it was time for him to attempt to use it in actual combat. His sparring partner is the one and only Jounin Hanchou, Minamoto Mei. Perhaps it’s the fact he’s the Yuki Lady’s assistant that allows him to have these kinds of connections, or moreover it’s due to the powers that be wanting to keep a close on him so that he doesn’t destroy the village. Regardless, Kouki was excited to have a spar with one of the strongest ninja in the village. As Kouki made his way to the training grounds, Kouki was picturing himself defeating Mei and laughing tiumphantly as the Kunoichi would have her head in the snow. This daydream got him through the walk to the grounds and before he knew it, there he was. Son Goku stirred from his nap as he recognized Kouki becoming amped up. This is not uncommon per se as Kouki also gets worked up by just being excited for a good meal. It’s hard to get rest when your host is like an excited puppy. "I hope she kicks your ass…” With a grunt he closed his eyes again to get what little sleep he could before the spar would begin. A slight frown flashed on Kouki’s face after hearing Son Goku’s jeer, but he quickly rebounded as he thought about the fight ahead. He now only needed to wait for the Hanchou to appear.

Mei took in a long, slow breath as she walked down the familiar set of stairs, her exhale frosting the chill, winter air. This was not the first time she had descended into these depths; once, years ago, she had come here to help train a young woman in the use of her Bijuu’s powers, had taught the girl a measure of control when using the Yonbi’s chakra… and now, here she was, half a decade later, doing it again, with a different Jinchuriki.

Yoshioka Kouki. 19 years old. Genin. Assistant to Lady Shuka. The Yuki woman thought, one hand trailing along the perfectly smooth stone wall as she strolled down the winding staircase, ice-blue gaze distant. Kouki seemed a decent enough boy- young, eager to please, even more eager to learn, the kind of student any teacher would dream of having… but for all the boy’s file sang his praises, there were troubling parts as well. A short fuse, a hot temper, and emotional distance made for potent a combination when mixed with a normal Shinobi’s duties and power. All of that on top of the stress and intensity of being a Jinchuriki, though? It was a ticking time bomb, no matter what Lady Shuka thought. But orders were orders, and so she had agreed to train the boy- and, hopefully, teach him to control his power in a way that didn’t hurt anyone.

Which was why she had written for him to meet her here: deep beneath Castle Black, buried into the bedrock of Yuki no Kuni, was a vast, expansive cavern, the kind one might expect a monster to live in. It had long since been cleared, but the structure still had its uses. Sealing a Bijuu inside a Jinchuriki was one of them- and training said Jinchuriki was another. Here, in the depths of the earth, the young Genin could unleash his full power without fear of destroying the village in the process… and with her as his sparring partner, there was little chance of him losing so much control that he let the beast within loose. She would kill him before it came to that, no matter what the act did to her heart. There were too many lives at stake to risk anything else.

So it was that, as Mei stepped down into the dimly lit cavern, her mind cleared, thoughts steeling into resolve at the sight of the boy. He was half her age, a child in everything but name… but he was also Yuki’s weapon. A sword, pointed at the throat of any and all who would dare come to their home unwanted. He had to be strong, for that if nothing else. She would make him strong, even if she had to hammer the strength into his bones herself.

"Good morning, Yoshioka-san." Mei said as she strolled towards where the boy was standing, her face a mask of calm formality. There was little for her to say right now, but etiquette dictated she at least try to be a bit friendly with him, no matter how awkward it might be.

_❝  The boy did not have to wait long before the Hanchou herself came forward into the cavern. The energy in the cave shifted as she stepped in. What once was wonder and excitement to the upcoming spar was then intermingled with the reality of what this was all for. Kouki had never really had many encounters with Mei. Her re-appointment as the Hanchou was recent enough that the majority of Kouki’s time as Lady Shuka’s assistant was spent without Mei’s presence until now. The genin would have to get know all of the upper echelon of Yukigakure’s authority figures at some point. Son Goku stirred slightly again as the beast recognized the woman standing in front of them. "Oh...it’s her...yeah you got no shot, Squirt.” with a slight grunt the Biju curled up tighter in his cage to try and rest before he may be needed. The beast and Mei have history that is unbeknownst to Kouki, so the boy simply understood the Biju’s comment to be nothing but a jeer. Kouki made a slight jog over to the Kunoichi for a proper hello. With a quick and low bow, Kouki sprang back up with his body experiencing a stiffness that only comes when feeling awkward. "Minamoto-sensei...G’morning! Uhhh...what’s new with you?” Any sense of formality was undercut by his unsure tone in his question. The boy clearly was unsure how to initiate a conversation with such a high ranking officer he barely knows as of yet. He knew she was there for his sealing ceremony...but that really was all he knows about her. Perhaps the exchanging of jutsu and fists would help to bridge the gap.

It was strange, seeing the boy. On the one hand, he was meant to be a weapon, a tool of Yukigakure that would slay their enemies and defend their home in the most dire of times. He was a Shinobi under her command, a Genin for the time being, but still a resource, a blade waiting to be sharpened for Lady Shuka’s use. And yet… God, he looks young. She thought as the boy jogged over to her, bowing with all the eager earnestness of a child. His file said he was nineteen, but he looked closer to fifteen, all puffy cheeks and wiry limbs, lacking in any real muscle mass. She would have to fix that.

"I am well, Yoshioka-san." Mei said as the boy straightened himself out, her sky-blue gaze lifted ever so slightly to meet his own. He was taller than her, though not by much, with an easy smile that would have melted Raimaa’s already warm heart, had she been here. It was almost a shame, sticking a beast like the Yonbi in such a kind looking lad. But then again, Katsumi had been an easy-going girl as well, even well after becoming a Jinchuriki. Perhaps that was a necessary quality, a calmness of spirit to counteract the raging monster within.

"I hope you are prepared for a long day." She said after a moment, slowly stretching her arms up over her head and rolling her shoulders back and forth, loosening up her joints and limbs for the coming exertion she was about to put them through. "Lady Shuka told me you’ve only been able to tap into the Yonbi’s power with limited success. We’re going to rectify that."

It was vital that the boy be able to utilize his Jinchuriki powers; if he couldn’t maintain even the basic cloak, he would be at a massive disadvantage when he was sent out against a foreign Jinchuriki. And he would be sent out to fight one, eventually. Mei knew it in her bones. Peace could only last for so long, after all.

"You have two minutes to ready yourself and summon the Yonbi’s chakra. Then we’re going to spar. And I will not be holding back." Mei said once she was done stretching, her voice calm and cold as ice, lips pursed together in a thin, tight frown that made her face seem far more severe than normal. If Kouki wanted to walk out of the chamber under his own power, he would have to find a way to draw on the Yonbi’s power. Once he did that, she could help him to control it. But first, he had to bring it out.

The emphasis on the word ‘not’ had Kouki’s body tense up slightly. This was obviously not going to be some simple spar. She was meaning to push Kouki to his limit. It’s true that Kouki finally has been able to access the biju chakra more freely, but he can only handle a small trickle of it. The great ape himself made a loud hurumph as he stirred again, feeling the anxiety creep into Kouki and by proxy his mindscape. The beast did not have the emotional bandwidth at the time to deal with Kouki’s own emotions. "Look...lava melts ice, right? You’ll be fine...or not. Who’s to say?” "Dammit Son Goku we need to focus! Let’s just do what we did last time.” Within his mindscape, Kouki could be seen at the cage of Son Goku reaching out his right arm with a fist. The ape proceeded to loom his huge expanse of an arm over to Kouki and through the bars of his enclosure. As their fists made contact, an almost scarlet chakra began to ooze out of Son Goku’s fist and swallow Kouki. Out in the real world, it would have only looked like Kouki had closed his eyes and furrowed his brow as the scarlet chakra began to envelope his body. Kouki would need to get used to the warming sensation. It was like he could feel his blood and heart pumping much harder. Kouki’s chest visibly rose and fell with each laborious breath. It was as if he was energized and withered at the same time, a delicate balance of his will and the sheer power of the beast he had to manage without being consumed. Kouki took a widened stance with his left foot front and his right foot back. His arms raised in an almost defensive boxing position. It was almost like a high with this chakra flowing through him. Funneling the heat of this shroud of chakra to his arms and legs, the genin’s limbs began to glow with heat as they became shrouded in lava. His brow furrowed, preparing for whatever this elite jounin was about to attempt.

Despite what she had said to Kouki, Mei had no intention of going all out on the young Genin; even with his limited control over the Yonbi’s chakra, if she hit him with a full force punch it would likely snap the poor boy’s spine in several different places. So as the boy concentrated, slowly drawing out the power of the Yonbi, the white-haired Hanchou did two things; the first was to form three hand seals, coating her arms and legs in a layer of Hyouton chakra that rapidly separated into segmented plates, not unlike scales, that encased her limbs in a set of frozen claws. The second was to take a simple, open stance, left arm in front of the right, body turned slightly to the side so as to present a smaller profile for the boy to attack.

"If you insist on allowing me to take the first move…" The Yuki woman said, noting the chakra coating Kouki’s limbs in a mirror of her own technique, her ice blue gaze narrowing a fraction of an inch as she took in a single, slow breath… and exploded forwards, not at full speed but far faster than anyone the boy would have ever fought against, somewhere around high Chuunin level. Her left arm cocked back as she hurtled towards the boy, holding in a defensive position while her right coiled forward in time with her steps so that, by the time she was within striking distance, her entire frame was turning with the attack, right foot leading as she pivoted with her hips and threw a straight punch right at the boy’s open collarbone, fingers bunched together into single, spear-like missile.

If the blow hit, Kouki would find himself pierced through, the sheer strength behind the stab enough to puncture not only his skin muscle, but the bone beneath it as well; this, however, was the least of his worries, as the cold of her Hyouton chakra would be enough to inflict frostbite on contact, numbing his limbs and making it harder for him to react to any follow up strikes.

By pooling raw Hyōton chakra around their hands/feet, the user is able to form a thin but durable layer of ice that, when properly formed, takes on the appearance of a set of draconic claws. These claws can be used during Taijutsu exchanges, essentially creating two to four highly mobile, extremely sharp appendages that both extend the range of the user’s attacks (though only by a few inches), greatly enhance their deadliness, turning what would be strong blunt strike into a devastating piercing/slashing blow, and allow the user to ice over whatever area of their opponent’s body they hit, similar to a case of major frostbite.

_❝   The active focus needed to maintain the balance of the biju shroud had impacted Kouki’s perception of the world around him. With so much focus on his inward self, his senses seemed dulled...numbed slightly. This was an apparent disadvantage as an Elite Jounin was barreling towards him cloaked in ice. Using as much of his battle instinct he could muster, Kouki put his weight towards his back right leg and attempted to pivot along with his opponent in a clockwise turn. Even if successful, the turn will not be quick enough and the ice claws of the kunoichi would run across the left forearm of the boy. Like a hot stove cooking fresh food, the claws hissed as they glided across the the lava-clad arm. Even with all that heat, the claws easily retained their shape enough to sink in and rend through the boy’s arm. A solid inch deep if not moreso, blood arched like a bridge out and away from the genin. A large spurt of blood it was, and before it could hit the ground, Kouki used the force of contact from the kunoichi to speed up his turn. At the same time, he retained his left arm tucked into his torso and extended his right arm straight out in an attempt to clothesline the Elite Jonin’s back or the back of her head. The biggest damage dealer here would not be the force of the arm but the heat of the lava. Perhaps he could at least graze her, if he was lucky.

As the host of the Yonbi, Kouki has been given access to an incredibly large pool of chakra, as well as Lava release and a naturally dextrous body making his taijutsu much more formidable than other taijutsu users of his rank. His ability to delve into this chakra is very small and currently he can only utilize weaker Yoton jutsus.



Tough as Nails (Physical Durability)

Always being the one to dive head first into a fight, Kouki has had his fair share of bruises, cuts, broken bones, you name it. All this has culminated into his body becoming very durable. He can take quite the beating before his body will give out due to physical damage. He is still susceptible to damage to the mind and genjutsus.

Mei knew, in the back of her mind, that the boy would dodge; she could almost see it, could visualize the sway of his body as he twisted out of the way of her strike, pivoting on his back foot in order to maintain balance while simultaneously using the momentum of his dodge to throw a clothesline directly at her head. It was a good reaction, one that would have caught a lesser combatant clean off guard, particularly since he would take an injury doing it- but she was not a lesser combatant, and this was not a schoolyard brawl between children. She was an Elite Jounin, one of the most feared Kunoichi to ever come from the Northern Yuki Clan… and she had trained Jinchuriki before.

Moving even before Kouki could begin his attack, the white-haired woman bent backwards, hands planted on the ground, her entire body arching to avoid the Genin’s clothesline; his arm whistled past her face by a good four inches, throwing his attack completely off balance and leaving him wide open for a counter. She didn’t take it though, instead springing away in a proper back handspring, her clawed fingers coming together as she blurred through the needed hand seals before taking in a deep, powerful breath, chakra churning in her gut as she molded it into shape.

"Hyōryuton: Hyōryu no Hōkō!" She said, expelling the chakra in a burst of ice cold air that surged forwards, crossing the distance between them with ease and enveloping where Kouki stood. It wasn’t the most powerful of her Hyōton jutsu, but it was an excellent choice for this spar- the air was almost 90 degrees below zero, and would cause severe frostbite if the boy stayed within the cloud for more than a second or two. His shroud would help mitigate some of that, but if he was to be an effective tool for the village, he would need to do more than simply mitigate the pain. He would have to negate the cold entirely, push through the temperature shock and go on the offensive. He, in short, had to grow.

Because if he didn’t… well. There was a reason she had a medic on stand-by up above.

_❝   It would seem as though grazing the kunoichi with his strike was a flight of fancy. The Jounin appeared to dodge the strike with a fast and lithe back bend. Kouki only registered the moment briefly as she was there one moment and gone the next. Son Goku was looking through Kouki’s eyes and felt inconvenienced that his host could not even make contact and yet the beast was also not surprised at all. "Hmph...a looonnggg way to go...” the ape mumbled, his eyes more keen on what was happening in the outside world. The kunoichi made distance between the two as she weaved signs that allowed her to expel below freezing air at the young man. Even with the shroud, Kouki could feel the very air around him sting instantaneously upon contact. For some shinobi, this pain would cause them to stumble back, to push away from the attack. Kouki was too headsrong for his own good and felt he had something to prove. As fast as a genin could, Kouki weaved the signs necessary to form yoton into his gullet to expel forward. "Yōton: Yōgan Shōshizuku!” Kouki launched 3 globs of lava in succession right at the Jounin. Whether or not they hit the intended target was fine. The heat of the jutsu is what Kouki was hoping would help to nullify the sheer cold of the enemy’s attack. Theoretically, the lava would soak up the cold, harden, and simply turn into large hunks of rock still barreling towards the Yuki Hanchou. Kouki would simply run to close the gap again and attempt another taijutsu assault starting with a downward kick that would be started by having leaping into the hair and into one front flip to allow his right heel to come shooting down into the Jounin’s head or shoulder.

As the host of the Yonbi, Kouki has been given access to an incredibly large pool of chakra, as well as Lava release and a naturally dextrous body making his taijutsu much more formidable than other taijutsu users of his rank. His ability to delve into this chakra is very small and currently he can only utilize weaker Yoton jutsus.



Tough as Nails (Physical Durability)



Always being the one to dive head first into a fight, Kouki has had his fair share of bruises, cuts, broken bones, you name it. All this has culminated into his body becoming very durable. He can take quite the beating before his body will give out due to physical damage. He is still susceptible to damage to the mind and genjutsus.

By using the Honō Clan natural immunity to their own techniques, the user coats their shins and feet with a thin, yet burning, layer of Lava. This supplements the user's physical movements. With the lava burning away at the surface of what the user is standing on their movements increase in quickness and fluidity, they appear as if they are skating on the ground. Their speed is not highly bolstered by the technique, just an added element of quickness due to the smoothness of their motion.

Kouki reacted to her attack well, adjusting his offense by performing a few hand seals of his own. Three globs of lava flew from his mouth into her cloud of cold a moment later, rapidly cooling as they barreled towards her, stemming some of her jutsu’s bite. Some, but not all- he would be feeling the chill even through the Yoton shroud coating his body, the shivers stunting his reaction time and slowing him down, however little it might be. In a normal battle, those small advantages added up quickly, stacking together to form a clean, killing blow rather than a glancing hit or dodge- but this was a spar and, while Mei was absolutely trying to push the boy, she wasn’t trying to kill him.

Not yet anyway.

Moving in time with the Genin’s dash, the Yuki woman flowed chakra through her legs, pushing off the ground in a burst of raw speed that, at least to her opponent, would look almost like she had disappeared from view; one instant she was there, and the next she simply wasn’t, body screaming off to her left as she circled around the boy, his attempted kick meeting nothing but air. She slowed as she got close, allowing him a brief moment to react before she once again launched a perfect jab with her clawed hand, this time aiming directly for the back of the boy’s neck… Only to pull her attack back at the last second, pivoting on her front foot to rake her claw down instead, potentially scoring a series of long, deep gashes along his entire back.

If she hit him, it wouldn’t kill him… but it would hurt. It would hurt a lot. Perhaps enough to push him to draw one more of his Tailed Beast’s power- or perhaps not. Either way, he would have to do something, fast.
