[attr="class","skullbody"]With a little bit of downtime Jun does what she always does work, and in this case her area of study was a specific item she was attempting to craft a specially made blade that was covert enough to be hidden away on her person and serve a covert usage that could be use to surprise an opponent. She had drafted up the schematics but had neither the know how or the understanding of metal working and knowing what the Tantetsu focus on she had wondered if perhaps Nashida would be able to instruct her.

She had always been fascinated by the concept and wanted to learn how to do it for herself so that she would always have it at her disposal, while Jun did like to sit back and watch she'd also liked being able to put what she's learned to the test and participate. But not only that but it would also give her a chance to see Nashida in her element and observe her at work. Jun had grown fond of Nashida as a colleague but was wanted to get to the true heart of her wanting to see her at her absolute best and for Nashida this was it.

With her eager thoughts in mind, Jun would make her way over to the woman's homestead her horse galloping furiously through the snow, as they neared the edge of village. As she closed in on her home a visible heat mirage could be seen from just outside of the home as she closed in the visage of her large companion would come into view. "Good Afternoon!" she'd say as she waved over to the woman as she closed in on her home bringing her horse to a stop and stepping off before fastening him to a tree near her home.

Nashida had just started firing up the forge when she saw the growing white cloud and a black speck in the distance, the signs of someone approaching. It wasn't an uncommon sight at her home, actually; she was one of the best metal-workers in the village of Yukigakure, and she was often tasked with making weapons and armor for others, although she still wasn't comfortable with large pieces. She had also done quite a few of the more simple works that other people required, like farriery and whitesmithing. Of course, someone approaching horseback isn't likely to come to her for her work as a farrier, so that was ruled out. In any case, Nashida continues to work on firing her forge as the black speck gradually gets larger.

She had just stepped inside to collect her tools and some horse-feed, and when she came back out, she saw that it was actually Jun who had come to see her. Her cheeks flush just a little, and she knows that Jun won't believe that it's the cold of the air nor the heat of the forge that's making her cheeks turn pinkish; she rarely feels either heat nor cold, even in this temperature. Nashida stops her work and quickly approaches Jun, though she's not sure if she should hug the other woman or not. Somewhat at a loss, she at least is able to respond in kind to her greeting.

"Good afternoon, Jun. Here, I've got hay for the horse."

With that, she drops a sizeable block of hay grass next to the horse, within reach if it wants to eat, and then she gestures towards the forge as it begins to reach working temperature. Oddly enough, the forge is warmer than her own home, since the heat needed to melt steel is far greater than the heat Nashida needs in order to feel comfortable. Her smithy is often a better place to meet with friends and also potential clients and customers. As the heat from the forge grows, Nashida removes her usual blue military jacket, revealing that she's wearing a plain white tank top underneath.

"The long sleeves might catch fire if I work with metal while it's on. What brings you all the way out here?"

Nashida, as typical for the blonde, gets straight to the point. She's certain she'll hear it all from Jun anyway, but she's still always curious, and usually asks.

[attr="class","skullbody"]As the girl arrived she'd greet her friend with a hug, before allowing her a moment to head inside and bring out the feed for her horse as the heat from the forge prompted her to unzip her jacket. As she did so she'd rest it on the railing and stood before her in a purple gi and black thermal undergarments.

As she watched the girl exit her home she'd notice that her cheeks were a flush pink, "It's good to see you too, Nashida." Jun had a working theory in her head but wasn't sure that she was correct in her next assumption and opted to remain quiet and simply smiled at her, however as she noticed the girl with her materials and tools she'd wonder just what it was she was crafting, but to that same end it she would notice that the woman would remove her jacket and the girls eyes lingered on it for a moment curious, intrigued even.

"Well I actually came here looking for you...allow me to explain." the girl would remove her journal from a belt she wore that housed her schematics she had drawn up for a specialized weapon. She'd allow Nashida a moment to look it over before removing the same small dagger she had been given by her friend. The schematics in question had shown the details for a blade that would be concealed beneath a bracer and seemed to have a spring lock design that would activate once the user flexed her wrist.

"I'm in need of a weapon with a specific design, the process requires blacksmithing and I was wondering if you'd be able to teach me how to craft it." she'd say with a smile as she looked over at the woman's forge a slight blush forming on her face. But given the nature of her statement and what she was looking at it might confuse Nashida but it was actually a sign of attraction from the young woman. She had found the Tantetsu to be rather enticing and wanted to see her in her element but Jun's manner of attraction rather than appearance comes in the form of intelligence. And had found her mastery of the art of metal working fascinating and wanted her to show it to her. "I'm eager to get started, where shall we begin?" the girl would ask.

"Should I roll up my sleeves...?" she would say thinking the sleeves of her clothing may prove hazardous thankfully beneath her jacket she wore a pair of dark thermal clothes in addition to a gi that was the same shade of purple as her jacket.

Nashida gazes down at the suggested blade, and carefully considers the various small pieces that would need to fit together perfectly while still maintaining battle-ready status even in the heat of battle or in the grit of the natural elements and deems it a dainty little thing. Which is perfect for her, as her usual method of crafting involved more delicate pieces and thin, intricate jewelry work, rather than the usual Tantetsu method of crafting heavy, drastically large pieces meant to intimidate and crush. Nashida was unlike most Tantetsu she'd met, including even her own tutor, which was why her own armor was taking longer than expected, but she felt she would eventually reach a breakthrough.

In any case, the knife is well-made, though she'll have to remove the handle completely in order to fit the blade's tang into the hidden blade device. Then she notices how Jun is gazing at her forge, and she wonders for a moment if perhaps the furnace is going a bit too hot. But no, it's about the normal temperature. She hopes the other woman isn't having a heat stroke due to going straight from the freezing cold to the heat of the forge, as sometimes happens with people working the forge for the first time in a cold climate. But the chance to teach someone else how to use the forge for their own work intrigues Nashida a bit, even though it could get a bit dangerous. She considers what exactly she had learned first when it came to the forge, but that likely wouldn't be much help; she'd been something of a prodigy when it comes to using Koton, and that won't help Jun in the least bit. At least she had learned how to forge without Koton first, so although it likely wouldn't be all that interesting, it'd at least get done.

"Rolling your sleeves up doesn't help; your arms will sweat eventually, and the sweat will make the sleeves gradually unroll until you're burning."

She turns away at first, taking the knife and slipping it into a vice before tightening down on the steel blade to keep it firmly in place. Granted, this would take longer since she couldn't simply slip the tang right out of the handle without using Koton, so she figures she could have Jun do this part.

"First thing's first, removing the pommel, handle, and the crossguard from the blade so we'll just be working with the blade itself."

[attr="class","skullbody"]As the girl would be told she didn't need to worry about her sleeves since she'd be sweating anyway. she took her words to heart as she looked over at the items in question. "Do you have any-- ahh." the girl would look around and found a pair of gloves she'd slip on. She'd then take the blade and watch as she places it into the vice seeing how its locked and place, and is then told she needs to remove the pommel from the blade.

She'd look it over and the place her hand on the end of the bottom side of the blade "Am I to twist it?" the girl would ask as she attempts to turn the handle and tries to pull it free. However in doing so it was quite tough and wouldn't come apart. "Hmm...I can't seem to remove it?" she'd wonder as she tried to pull the handle free by twisting it but couldn't seem to get it to pry free.

She'd look over towards her much taller instructor wondering if she might be able to give her some assistance as she glance up towards the much taller woman who stands over her and would smile to her, she was fumbling but it was too be expected given that this was a new task but the learning process was what made it fun and she eagerly awaited Nashida's guiding hand to help her properly unfasted the handle from the blade. Her thoughts would refocus slightly as she looked back down at the blade seeing a small reflection just in the end of the weapon.

Nashida laughs a bit as she watches Jun grabbing hold of the pommel and twisting with all her strength, but she's seemingly unable to get it started. It was certainly a rare sound from the normally very stoic woman, but it reminded her of her own first time learning to unscrew a pommel. She'd determined already from holding it and flooding it with her chakra that the tang was threaded, but tightly, so it would require more strength than she could probably have mustered for it. As it is, Nashida takes out a piece of red-hot steel from the forge, gently nudging Jun aside and pressing it around and around the pommel, letting it heat and soften just a little before she quickly removes the steel again, before gripping the pommel with a cold iron pair of tongues, using the leverage granted by her tool to start the turning process.

She'd seen Jun pick up the gloves, so after the pommel begins to turn a little more easily, she removes the tongs from the piece, letting Jun get to it.

"There. Steel becomes softer when it's hot like that, but it also stays hot for a long time. I've only heated the pommel, since we won't need it with the weapon we're making, so it should turn much more easily and slip off the threading without damaging the tang."

With that, she sets aside the tongs, then checks to make sure that the rest of her workplace has enough materials for the vambrace as well as the more fine metallic filaments and fittings that should keep the blade hidden until it needs to be deployed. Another danger of course would be the possibility of it cutting the woman on the way out, so it would need a kind of "safety" trigger as well, to ensure doing handseals won't make the blade shoot out.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Jun was somewhat familiar with the manner in which she was describing the blade but there were some of the more intricate parts she wasn't entirely familiar with. She watched as the woman manned the forge and took part in each aspect of putting it together giving her an explanation on how the process worked.

"So by heating the pommel it allows for easier removal of said part?" the woman would ask making sure she understood the process. As this went on Nashida would laugh not something she'd normally hear from the woman but something that she was happy to have heard the mirth in her voice brought a smile to the woman's face.

"What's so funny." the girl would say as she motioned towards the weapon and would slowly remove the pommel now finally able to do so her hands feeling the heat from the scorching metal in front of her after a few swift turns of the parts she was able to remove the pommel proper. "Haha there we are checkmate!" the girl would say as she removed the pommel from the weapon and set it aside gleefully, looking towards Nashida now that her part is complete "Good, so now what's next?" she'd ask enjoying her current instruction.

Seeing this process made her wonder just what other sorts of things she'd be able to do once she had more time working the forge, while she was making a weapon there was still artistry to it which she appreciated.

Nashida smiles when Jun seems to understand that heating the pommel made it easier to remove, and then puts that new knowledge to practice when she unscrews the pommel from the bottom of the tang herself, and she nods when she hears the satisfying ping of the pommel being set aside on one of Nashida's multiple workbenches, which are already somewhat stacked with blades of varying types, sizes, and profiles. Some are finished, missing only the fittings and the usual final polish, and some are practically no better than scrap metal, only good for making something far superior from what they themselves are. Nashida can somewhat see the similarities between forging a knife and forging a blacksmith now.

"Next the handle and the guard. Both should slide right up off the tang; the pommel is usually what keeps the whole thing firmly locked in place, which is why the pommel had to be so tight on the end of the tang as to be nearly impossible for a human to remove it."

As she speaks, Nashida is busy looking through what tools she has until she finds a more blocky piece of steel, looking more like an ingot or a brick. With a few handseals, she's able to focus her chakra into the metal, using her Koton chakra to gradually tear a much thinner slab from the piece of steel, then gradually thinning it more and more until it's a slim piece, about twice as thick as the thickest point of the dagger. Such a process would have taken several hours at the forge, but this was far faster and quite a bit simpler.

[attr="class","skullbody"]With the instruction she was given the girl would take the handle and slide them off making sure to steer clear of the fire. "So the pommel is meant to keep the weapon secure and hold the hilt and handle in place?" she'd say following her teachers instruction. In doing so the girl would see the many workbenches that are filled to the brim with products that Nashida had created. Oh the stories of trail and error each of those items were able to tell, just who knows how much time and toil had went into the actual crafting process of making each one of these instruments unfinished or not.

With this Jun realizes that Nashida much like her is also a student of her own art much like how Jun is a student of fuinjutsu and calligraphy, Nashida is a student of blacksmithing. "Those pieces of hers...they look very evolutionary..." the girl would think as she examined each piece. "Some look nearly complete while the others look like the product of a fruitless but non the less worthwhile effort." there were those that had polish and those that looked somewhat incomplete but the effort was apparent.

"But I can tell you she worked tirelessly on each one..." such a display of mental fortitude put on display by her efforts would prompt her to keep her eye lingering on the girl for a slightly longer moment than usual a mirthful smile escapes her as she glances towards "I'm ready for the next step Nashida-sensei." she had other questions about her craft but felt those could wait until after the lesson was over.

Nashida momentarily puts aside the steel piece that will be used to hold the blade in place when she hears Jun call for her, feeling a bit of a blush color her cheeks again when the other woman call her "sensei". It wasn't something she was really used to, and she felt a bit of pride welling up inside of her, but she puts that aside for now. She should focus on the job, not on whatever feelings she might have when she's around Jun. She deftly loosens the vice, letting the blade free where Nashida catches the tang, then brings it up to the firelight to inspect it herself. She's not seeing a lot of imperfections; whoever had made the blade had been pretty good. She then tests the size of the piece she'd managed to tear off from the block of steel, and finds that the blade and the sheathe were very close as far as dimensions were concerned, which is more than good enough for her.

"Good work, Jun. Okay, the next step..."

With this, Nashida carefully measures the tang down to the shoulder, then, with a lot of chakra pressed into the tang, she uses her fingernail to make a little divot into the steel, not quite halfway deep before she slips the tang into the furnace as well, watching as it gradually heats, though she's careful to avoid putting it in deep enough to heat the blade itself.

"The plan I have in mind, the tang will just end up getting in the way, so you're going to knock it off the blade. You just have to be careful not to smash the shoulders, which widen into the actual blade. We're going to use ball bearings on either side of the blade so it can roll freely in this contraption."

Here, Nashida brings out the sheathe in progress, a steel piece with only a little space on either side where the blade would rest.

"It'll have a catch that keeps the blade from simply falling again when there's any pressure against it. The schematics you showed me didn't have this, but it's going to be necessary for you to reset it as well, so this catch is going to be retractable with a different kind of motion..."

"Much appreciated, I learned from the best." she'd cheerily remark. As she finished, the woman would remark to her that for the next portion of their work they'll be attempting to remove the tang which is the metal portion of the blade now visible from having remove the hilt of the blade.

"Yes Ma'm." with that she would take a hammer that she had found situated nearby and would look down at it, still not sure if she might've been jumping the gun but waited patiently for confirmation.

"I assume this is the part where we start hammering?" she'd say as she looked towards the taller woman, with a smile excited to begin this part of the process very physical. She would explain the other parts of the process so that it'd be able to move properly inside of the device. "I see...when you say move freely that's referring to when the device is in use correct, to prevent issues while in use?" she'd say wanting to have a better understanding of the process and how the weapon itself will work.

As she awaited instruction on what steps she would need to say next, She would ask her questions wanting to hear her speak more, to teach her, guide her, allow her to see more of her mastery.

Nashida smiles at Jun as she mentions the hammering, seeing her grab hold of a blacksmith's hammer in preparation for the job of splitting the tang from the rest of the blade. The blonde woman gives the snow-haired Genin a single, quick nod as she explains what they're going to be doing in more detail.

"That's right. You're going to hammer the end of the tang over the edge of the anvil here, but we're going to need to hammer it back and forth to loosen the iron bonds until the tang falls off. So you'll strike it once, I'll flip it over, and you strike it again. If we do that enough times, the tang will drop to the floor."

It seems she'll need to explain the way the fumei ha works in more detail to Jun, but she can see that the steel of the blade is already red-hot at the point where the tang widens sharply into the shoulder, so she grabs the tongs and drags the knife blade out so she can rest it on the anvil, with the tang jutting out over the edge to provide a fairly easy target to crash the hammer onto.

"I'll explain in more detail once we've got the tang off, but for now, we need to get hammering right away, while the metal's hot like this. I've already ruined the previous heat-treating, so all the metal is going to be soft; if you strike it after it's cooled, it'll shatter the blade instead."

Nashida would give more instructions on what she would be doing for her part and once everything had been doled out, the girl would ready herself but not before she had her question answered in regards to the the process of the usage of the weapon she would tell her she would explain that she'd answer those questions later.

Jun seemed a bit bashful about interrupting the process and would sheepishly blush, admittedly still curious but didn't want to interrupt her teachers process. "Yes sensei, I'll save my questions to the end...now then."

She'd hone in on the weapon itself raising her hammer and clanging it with her tool with a hearty smash she'd then wait for Nashida to turn it over and have her take her turn before she herself would strike down and the process would repeat, the clanging and smashing was exhilaration giving a degree of physicality to the effort, truly adding the sweat of the crafter into the process in of itself and bringing a smile to the girls face.

The sound of her hammer smashing was accompanied by grunts of effort as she did her best to try and break the piece off as the metal would hopefully bend an crack underneath her hefty strikes. She certainly wasn't as physically imposing as Nashida was but she wasn't exactly dainty either, as evidenced by the force with which she applied her blows.

Nashida is thankful that her student is just as swift as she is, though she's not as strong as the blonde woman herself. It's strong enough, especially since she can see that the tang is beginning to bend back and forth as she switches between one side and the other. The tang gradually begins shifting more and more between each side every time Nashida turns the blade over to the opposite side, until the tang clatters to the floor. Nashida has barely even worked up a sweat, but she can see that Jun has given it a lot of effort, so she stops where they are, just for the moment, to get a bit of rest.

"This is a good place for a stopping point for now. I'll help to better explain what I'm planning on doing."

With this, she brings back out Jun's notebook, with its intricate drawings of what she plans to have for the blade, and Nashida pulls down a scrap of cloth, using her own dark charcoal to make some marks on the cloth to show her own design. It includes ball bearings on either side of the extending portion, so that neither side of the blade is directly touching any hard metallic surface, save for the ball bearings themselves. It also includes a strong metal latch that extends once the blade is fully out of its slide, ensuring that no matter how hard she might press down with the blade, it won't end up just slipping back inside uselessly. It's also spring-loaded, allowing it to keep that energy built up until it's ready to fire out, although there's a small note she's written explaining that the spring will need to be changed out regularly to ensure consistency.

"These are what I've got in mind. With these, it won't slide metal on metal, which causes a lot of mechanical friction. That would cause an immense amount of wear on the internal mechanisms, and cause it to fail hard if you use it more than a few times."

[attr="class","skullbody"]As the girl would keep pounding away at the metal with her instructor the tang would eventually break off from where it lay and Jun would hear the clang of it landing on the ground and would smile gleefully, Nashida then takes pause saying that this was a good point to stop for now. She then Takes Jun's notebook and looks over her plans for the schematics and marks up the cloth, slightly worried it might damage some of the pages or other pieces of art behind it, but she trusted Nashida to be gentle.

"Oh are you adding something...?" after a moment she would show her some small edits she has made showcasing the ball bearings as means of making so that the blade doesn't come into contact with any other metallic surfaces. There was also a metal latch that ensured that once it was out that it wouldn't just slide directly back inside. She would even notice a small note that states that the spring within it will need to be changed out in order to ensure it continues to function.

"I would've never thought of that." the girl would say as she looked over the drawing schematic, Nashida was the professional in this given situation and she was delighted that she had someone so knowledgeable. "I knew I'd picked the right person for the job." she'd look over towards the forge watching the fire burn.
