Hisao stood patiently waiting at the entrance to the Hospital, absentmindedly fiddling with the slowly unravelling edge of his scarf as he looked around.
He’d been assigned to do some teamwork training with a ‘Gurē Ren’ today, by some higher-ups in the Medical Corps. He’d never worked with Ren specifically before, but Hisao had met another Gurē before and hoped that would at least prepare him somewhat for what the day was to bring. At least if the Gurē were anything like the Kuronmeru, once you’d met one you sort of knew the general character you were in for. Hisao was still sore from training with that one.. Mentally and physically..
He thought back to the kindness that had almost radiated from Gurē An and hoped wistfully that it was a family trait.

The footsteps and muttering of those who worked here and those in need of assistance had filled the air and Hisao felt the need to force himself to stay put. He’d been instructed where to meet Gurē Ren and he had absolutely shown up much earlier than originally planned. He’d thought it best not to be tardy, especially for a first meeting like this. He’d prepared his clothes neat and tiny, and his hair tied back in a braid as best he could. He’d filled his pockets with some extra bandages and made sure to double-check he had his usual gear, ready for whatever tasks he might be challenged with today. He was gonna give himself the best chance to succeed no matter what!

Anxiety was starting to take hold of him, crawling just beneath his skin like an itch he couldn't or rather wouldn't quite scratch and he kept looking from the entrance door to the hallway, sometimes catching the pitying glance from the receptionist who’d seen him stand stiff as a board for half an hour now without talking to anyone. He’d cooled his expression into one of mild annoyance if anything, trying to signal for people not to talk to him. He just had to keep an eye out for a tall medic-nin with blond hair and not be too much in the way of the people working here while he did so..

”Organ transplant on the field??” Ren read out loud leaning up from a journal in his hand. The blonde doctor had been a fan of any and all new research and articles in the medical (as well medical ninja) field and there was now an article on performing organ transplantation surgery on the field. Apparently this had happened out of necessity to save someone who the shinobi were escorting and, as luck would have it, they had been a match for one of the shinobi with them. ”Hold up… someone gave up an organ for the guy they were escorting?” Ren opened the magazine wider and showed it to the nurse he had been chatting with while glancing over the titles.

It had been a pretty calm day - most of Ren's day had been spent doing paperwork and going over new research that might prove useful for the hospital. He didn't hold a high rank in the building but would help with research regularly - mainly because he was addicted to the art and science of medicine.

Having already changed clothes from his medic uniform to a pair of black slacks, dark green turtleneck and a black wool-lined leather jacket (it was winter, after all), Ren exchanged pleasantries with the nurse next to him. The girl had brown, wavy hair and big brown eyes - she was cute and was easy to chat to. She also had a tiny crush on Ren so he enjoyed spending time with her. There was something about affection that was also addictive. He mused it must do with the chemicals romantic attention creates in a brain. Never having found someone to truly love, the young man would coast on flirting and soaking up attention as much as he could before his looks changed for the worse.

*I guess it's about time* he thought as he'd take one last sip of the tea in front of him. The blonde had to go train with another medic and, while he found this to be a good opportunity, he had also clocked the guy twenty minutes earlier when he had finished changing. To Ren's eyes Hisao looked uptight and a bit awkward so he was in no rush to start early. Instead, he had chosen to have a quick cup of tea in the hospital cafe with a cute nurse.

Eventually, Ren would emerge in the lobby and calmly walk over to Hisao: ”Sourei Hisao-kun?” he asked in a warm tone. Ren offered a friendly smile and he had always had a "kind” face so he came across as very approachable. ”My name is Ren - good afternoon.” he lifted a hand to emphasize the greeting. The blonde mednin had shinobi boots on and his headband was tied around his forehead - most of it was obstructed by his blonde locks, however. All of his tools were placed in a shoulder bag he carried. If it wasn't for the shoes and headband, he would look like a civilian.

Hisao saw the white-haired man almost immediately as he entered the lobby but had to double back and look at him again when he heard his name being called out. Was this Ren? Hisao had expected him to be dressed more.. professionally? This seemed almost too casual, but the last thing Hisao wanted to do was insult the guy so he dismissed the thought and quickly took a step forward, bowing his head in greeting. He raised his head again and made direct, if a little forced, eye contact with him as he spoke up.

"I bid you good day Ren-Sensei. I am Sourei Hisao, genin of the Medical Corps.
I will be under your care and instruction this day.”

He spoke in a clear but stiff manner, almost as if he’d been practising the line in his head for the past hour or so.. Ren’s charming nature seemed to go mostly over Hisao’s head, almost as if he had built an invisible sphere around himself of high-strung decorum and social anxiety, where any subtle vocal tints or hints would either not be commented on or not have been understood in the first place.
Hisao too had bundled up, although it was with multiple thinner layers so he didn’t look much different than usual, if perhaps by close inspection a bit bulkier than normal. His dark brown scarf had been pulled down a little, seeing as he’d been inside for a while now, showing layers going all the way up his neck too. He wore thicker boots to match and had his headband tied to one of the belt hoops on his waist.

"I look forward to learning all you may share this day and hope to be deserving of your time and patience.”

Hisao looked like he meant it too - he had respect for those who ranked above him. He had much to learn if he wanted to be a better medic-nin and so he was eagerly going to take the chance to learn as much as he could.

”Indeed.” Ren couldn’t help but marvel at how uptight Hisao was. However, ‘Ren-sensei’ had a nice ring to it and stroked his ego. This was enough to make Ren warm to the boy in front of him. The master was ready to conduct some training. Actually, he had no idea what to do with him at first and was going to go out and brave the conditions for some in-field practice but now, feeling a bit more adventurous, Ren changed his mind.

”Hai, hai, I look forward to teaching you, my dear Hisao.” he said sweetly with a mischievous look in his eye. Like a snake, he’d wrap an arm around Hisao’s shoulder and would guide him back into the hospital. The two would walk down some halls and arrive at a quiet laboratory.

”So, you’re from the Sourei clan. That’s one of the wealthiest families in Kirigakure. What’s your relation to the clan head?” Ren inquired. Coming from wealth of his mother’s aunt (Sho and An’s grandparents) who owned an successful corporation, and having his own business run in Kiri and Mizu no Kuni, the blonde was always curious about the wealth of the other families. After all, he believed he should marry rich one day and cultivate more influence. Marrying rich would suit him well. Think of all the clothes and instruments he could buy with no worry... not that he didn’t already.

The young man would walk further into the lab and open one of the refrigerators to withdraw some vials. He sat down at the long laboratory island and opened one of the vials. ”Let’s play a game, Hisao-kun. I’ll get poisoned,” he said before chugging the vial’s contents, ”and you save me.” he smiled as he set the empty vial down. He removed the label from it and rolled the thing towards Hisao on the table. ”Tick, tock...” he mimicked the arm of a clock with his finger.

Hisao instantly tensed up, as Ren slung his arm around the younger boy. The man might as well have held a knife against his throat with the way Hisao had reacted to the touch. The casualness of Ren’s words and the swift, easy way in which he caged him in and moved him to an isolated area unnerved Hisao. Intentionally or not, Hisao felt as if he had stepped right into the lion’s den and the feeling only intensified as Ren asked about his family relations..
Hisao hesitated before speaking, minding his words so as to not offend his teacher for the day. He hoped by being somewhat dismissing of the entire thing that Ren might leave it at that and not ask any further.. Hisao was not sure what he would say, if he kept pushing.

"I must apologise, Ren-Sensei, but I do not believe I have much to say on matters such as the Sourei family’s finances.”

He relaxed a bit as Ren had let go and moved further into the laboratory. Hisao dared a look around the room before looking back at Ren as he heard him retrieve something. He watched him intently, trying to figure out the intentions of this odd man before him, his eyes widening a fraction as he heard his words and saw him chug the contents of the vial. Hisao barely stopped his jaw from falling and composed himself long enough to take the last few steps up to the desk and picking up the vial, now with a visible frown on his face.

"Gure Ren-Sensai, I mean no disrespect but you are aware that I am not trained in any poison removing jutsu, correct?”

He asked the other with perhaps a strange calm and neutrality. Hisao smelled the vial, trying to figure out what components might have been part of it. Perhaps he might recognise any? He had.. Some experience with poisons after all, but likely not nearly enough that this would not prove difficult to solve.
Hisao doubted the more experienced Medic-nin would truly risk his life like this, but even so, it was perhaps for the best to take the moment as seriously as if it had been out in the fields. Hisao could not be held responsible should the older, more experienced Medic-nin take any damage from this lesson... would he?? Oh no what if the Gure clan decided Hisao was to take responsibility and Kobashi found out?? What shame it would bring on him. Hisao's eyes went from the vial in his hand and back at Ren, now with a certain look of determination or anger that had not been there before.

Ren watched Hisao’s face as the younger boy came over to inspect the vile. The blonde chuunin lingered in his seat a little and gleefully watched the panic and determination become evident on Hisao’s face. It was fun to see this range of emotion. Ren had always been playful and a bit of a sadist when he controlled the environment so he found this type of training amusing. He had, in fact, injested real poison so, for the sake of the training, the now grinning man advised: ”I think I have about two hours before things get bad so please do hurry.”

He spoke very calmly for a potentially dying man and stood up to walk to the end of the island and retrieve something from the cupboards underneath. He crouched down to get it and when he resurfaced he was holding two large and thick books. Both were wide and easily more than a thousand pages thick. He walked over to Hisao and sat them on the work surface in front of him. ”There. The top one is a catalogue of poisonous plants and their counterparts and the other is a catalogue of poisons we know of and how to make their antidotes. Bare in mind that some antidotes do have side-effects when used with the wrong poison. And have fun.”

Ren would retreat a bit further and pick up a medical journal from the top of a stack on the table nearby and sit down to lazily flick through it. ”Of course, use any equipment you’d like in here.”

Hisao ran his hand over the cover of the second book which focused primarily on what they knew and the making of antidotes. He had felt increasingly frustrated at his teacher for the day, finding that clearly, not all of the Guré clan are as alike as he had originally hoped…While he had not felt disrespected by his question not being answered, he was also not terribly surprised by the outcome. Hisao had gotten somewhat used to unconventional training lessons and being left to figure things out on his own. Even then..

Hisao gave a last look at Ren, before opening the book and browsing through its contents. While he had not read this specific book before, he had read many smaller collections on the poisons and toxins they knew of before as he had been so clearly instructed in the past, it was always good to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Hisao might not be the best genin on the battlefield when it came to physical fighting abilities, but he had spent many years burrowed in books and felt confident in his ability to quickly and competently find what he was looking for within the pages of these books, should the answer be there. For now, he was simply being forced to use his ordinarily dismissed skills and knowledge under some.. duress.

"Guré Ren-Sensei, will you be informing me of any negative side effects you may currently or subsequently feel? Such as feelings of disorientation, faintness, nausea or trouble breathing?”

While Hisao asked, his eyes were glued to the book, going directly for any poisons that needed to be ingested and could be contained in liquid form at a colder temperature, essentially working with the facts he had available for now. The vial had not smelled of almonds and Ren had not been instantly foaming at the mouth, meaning it was a slower poison. Two hours he’d been informed and so he let the information he had sink in and if given any other clues from the poisoned man, would add them to his mental notes. Hopefully he would have enough time to figure this out before any of the more serious side effects kicked in..

Ren was, most definitely, enjoying the struggle. He might truly be a sadist. That being said, his heart rate had quickened slightly from the stress he was putting himself through. Not that anyone would ever know.

Nonchalantly flicking through page after page of a journal, the man did not respond straight away. He turned another page... and then spoke:

”I’ll tell you when I develop symptoms.” he spoke without looking up from his reading. ”If you run out of time, I’ll die... probably.” he yawned and flicked a page.

It would be easy to explain why Ren was putting the boy through this but where was the fun in that? Instead, Ren would teach him something about calling decisions under pressure. There would be situations where an extreme case would come in or someone might get ill during a mission. It was the medic’s job to act with a cool head and do their most to save people in front of them and there were no warnings beforehand and no failsafe.

Of course, Ren didn’t plan to actually die for teaching a younger medic a lesson. However, he wouldn’t tell that to Hisao. This was productive for both of them.

”In two hours I’ll begin forming irreparable kidney damage. My body temperature is starting to increase now.” he spoke and flicked another page while crossing his legs and leaning back in his chair.

”Oooooh, interesting, interesting...” he muttered to himself while reading yet another medical article.

Hisao pulled out a nice leatherbound notebook and some pens from his bag. He then let his bag drop by the table and gently pushed it beneath so it would be out of the way. He had just finished going over the index when Ren spoke up. Hisao looked up at him, primarily as a sign of respect, more than anything else and gave a nod, even whilst knowing the other would not see it. He had then skipped to a page near the middle of the book and started reading, a finger brushing over the page absentmindedly as he skimmed, searching.
It was unlikely a basic toxin neutraliser would do much, but it might buy him some time, should he end up needing it. He was looking at the different neutralising agents, seeing which worked on which poisons and trying to sort them into the potential side effects. He could now strike out anything that worked quickly, meaning within a few minutes and, with the new clue, anything that did not affect the kidneys. The book on poisonous plants could have been a red herring but Hisao doubted even Ren, with his chaotic energy, would risk the timewaster that could have been. All in all, it certainly was a start.

After twenty minutes or so of reading, Hisao suddenly stood up straight, having been hunched somewhat over the book as he had not originally grabbed a chair to sit and jumped straight into it instead. He looked around and tugged a stray piece of rough-cut, straight white hair behind an ear. He then briskly walked around the room, not paying much attention to Ren but also avoiding entirely leaving his back towards him if he could avoid it. He was clearly looking for something but said nothing. Once Hisao found it, he stopped and opened the cabinet, taking out some glass beakers, volumetric flasks, empty vials and stands. He placed them all at a nearby empty table and went about gathering more equipment. When he'd set up he went back to the cabinets by the very end of the room and started collecting some chemical components, taking some time to read them over and fill out a tray before bringing them over to the setup. He then went back to the book and read over a few lines again, before he copied the text over onto one of the pages in the notebook. He tapped the end of the pen against his chin before reaching over and picking up the book which catalogued poisonous plants. He dived back into reading, staying quiet and while he was not paying obvious outwards attention to Ren, the genin was not being inattentive to him. An attentive eye might notice how Hisao noted any shift of movement or sound coming from his direction, always prepared for.. something, even if he did not actively react to it.

It was quiet. Very quiet at that. Nothing could be heard for about twenty minutes besides some steps, breathing, page turning and the occasional rustle. Hisao getting up to retrieve some dishes was the most exciting thing the room noise had had since they began the exercise.

Ren flicked through the last few pages of the journal he was reading but was not excited. The chuunin medic spent most of his time studying obsessively. If it wasn’t about medicine, science or music, he wasn’t interested. Ren would spend his free time frequenting the theatre, shopping, checking in on his business (with the help of his family, he had opened a small chain of fungal remedy stores across Mizu no Kuni), performing music for an audience or on a date somewhere with one to many young women. The boy grew bored easily so he wasn’t good at sitting still. Besides, his obsessive personality was a good fit for being either a music nerd or a medicine one.

Noticing that the volumes in the room were ones he had read already, the man sighed and dramatically threw his arms back over his head. He hung his head back over the backrest of the chair and contemplated the insufferable boredom that he had to endure for seconds now. How ever would he save himself?

”Oh death~
Oh death rock me to sleep~
Bring me the quiet rest;
Let pass my weary guiltless ghost
Out of my careful breast:

Toll on the passing bell,
Ring out the doleful knell,
Let thy sound my death tell,
Death doth draw nigh;
There is no remedy.

My pains~
My pains who can express?
Alas! they are so strong,
My dolour will not suffer strength
My life for to prolong:

Toll on, thou passing bell,
Ring out my doleful knell,
Let thy sound my death tell,
Death doth draw nigh;
There is no remedy.

Alone~
Alone in prison strong~
I wait my destiny,
Woe worth this cruel hap that I
Should taste this misery?

Toll on, thou passing bell,
Let thy sound my death tell,
Death doth draw nigh,
There is no remedy.

Farewell~
Farewell my pleasures past,
Welcome my present pain!
I feel my torments so increase
That life cannot remain.

Cease now,thou passing bell;
Rung is my doleful knell,
For the sound my death doth tell,
Death doth draw nigh,
There is no remedy~”

This time Ren sang a song he had heard from a foreigner and not one passed down to him by a family member or a local - or even written by himself. The man’s voice was smooth and clear. It sounded sincere and he sang in a minor key so the song sounded final. It was actually kind of funny to him. Eagerly, he looked over to Hisao to see if he would freak out or not.

After a minute, however, he got up and stumbled to a nearby sink. ”I’m nauseous now.” and gracefully threw up in the sink.

While Hisao had not visibly ‘freaked out’ at Guré Ren’s sudden musical outburst, he had been caught off guard. He had raised a brow and turned his attention towards him but after the first few lines, his eyes had darted back to the books. However the lyrics had caught his attention and while he looked as if to still be reading, his mind was somewhere else completely.

Death and solitude. Those were things he knew of intimately and hearing someone so casually sing about it out of nowhere made Hisao wonder if perhaps the medic had more depth to him than he had assumed.. Perhaps he too sometimes found himself wishing he did not awake in the morning, perhaps he too was haunted by thoughts that things would be better if he had not been born, perhaps-.. Or perhaps it truly was just the need for attention and dramatic flair - a thought strengthened as the song came to an end and the man had gotten up to gracefully throw up in a nearby sink. Hisao sighed quietly and stood, gathering some napkins and offering them over to the man.

"I will have the first neutraliser ready in a moment, Guré Ren-Sensei. Please stay here and I will fetch you a chair”

Hisao said, tone polite and emotional. It seemed the more Ren acted chaotically the more Hisao had to act professionally to get through this. This morning he had been nervous but excited for today's training opportunity but now he dreaded every minute and simply wanted it all to be over with already. Having this man, whose name was respected in many circles, act so childishly and recklessly, bothered Hisao immensely. He had almost wanted to ask the man his thoughts on death, why that song and why now, but found that he would was likely he would not like the answer, as the chance it would be given jovially seemed much too great for Hisao to even bother. He willed himself not to fluster or act out in aggression and simply put any energy he had into getting the job done.

Hisao would have done as he said he would and after handing the man the napkins, had gone to gather a chair and brought it over by the sink. Assuming Ren could still sit or decide to stay standing by his own will, Hisao went into actually making the neutralising mixture. He brought his notes over to the setup from earlier and got straight into measuring and mixing, double and sometimes triple-checking his measurements and calculations. After a couple of minutes, he would have brought back a vial, containing an almost clear liquid.

"This is likely not a complete cure, but it should slow the effects and mitigate most of the nausea you are experiencing. I have a few alternatives on antidotes, but some of them have.. Unpleasant side effects. I shall strive to narrow the options as quickly as possible”

Hisao explained, neutrally while looking directly at Ren and handing him the vial. While Hisao still intended to act both politely and professionally, he also looked ready to turn and go back to his notes if Ren did not try to stop him.

Ren would plop down on the chair and cough into the sink a few more times before wiping his face with the provided napkins and looking up at Hisao. His gaze was unlike all the ones before. The blonde’s green eyes were piercing and cold stabbing at the younger man from under his golden locks. It was like Ren was looking through the man and witnessing his soul bare. The air grew thick with intimidation and there was a chill in the atmosphere. However, that would pass quickly and he’d offer a grin and would wave Hisao back to his book: ”I’m counting on you, Hisao-kun.”

There were multiple reasons why Ren wanted to test Hisao in such a brutal way. It seemed that his singing had eased the tension in the room but the man had done it for the diversity and not to necessarily ease Hisao. The truth of the situation was that Ren was, in fact, dying and he did not want to see someone take the situation lightly just because of some theatrics. It was not a joke and if Ren saw it treated like one, he would come up with even more colourful lessons for Hisao in the future… the man was, after all, a bit of a sadist.

Not everyone could be as gifted and immersed in medicine as Ren so he had expected some progress a bit sooner but receiving a neutraliser was a good start. The blonde doctor had seen what Hisao was mixing and he noted the remeasuring. The end result was almost perfect, by his estimation, and would help a little. The colour was a little off but Ren didn’t let the kid see him expect it. Instead, he chugged it as soon as Hisao gave it to him. This was done to emphasise that all the big decisions would be Hisao’s in these situations. Of course, Ren could have said this out loud but there was no real merit in that - medical shinobi had to read between the lines and understand situations by themselves.

”Choose wisely.” he said in regards to the antidotes. It sounded quite grim, actually, yet he still smiled and offered a cheerful wave.

Hisao watched Ren quickly chug it down with seemingly little to no concern. He had not been surprised by this, easily believing Ren to run directly into something that could kill him for the mere spectacle of it.
He watched him for any immediate reactions and when none occurred he started to stand and get ready to turn and go back to work.

Hisao had bristled slightly at Ren’s comment to choose wisely. He did not want to be snarky towards his teacher but did the man have no self-preservation? Was he not at all affected by the entire situation going on?? He pushed the feeling down and continued to work diligently. He knew he had terrible bedside manners and was actively trying to work on being better at it, but moments like these made him wish he could simply work behind the scenes and improve himself without needing to emotionally tend to the patients as well. He knew it was an important part of being in the healthcare profession and he would never openly complain but sometimes he inadvertently fondly thought back to before he had to deal with so many eccentric characters.. If anyone knew and pushed him on the subject, he would have not gone back to the time before but even then he privately let himself get annoyed even so.

Wordlessly Hisao buried himself back in his work, crossing out note after note, eliminating toxin after toxin until he was down to two options. He studied both carefully and strode over to his setup, measuring and mixing. There were only minute differences between the two and he made sure to label everything very carefully. His teacher had yet to pass out or start foaming at the mouth so while he felt somewhat rushed it was not enough for him to behave erratically or be willing to try and take shortcuts for time. Once done with both antidotes he would walk back over to Ren, explaining what he put into each and why as he walked.

"- Therefore if your vision is starting to get blurry, please drink this. If not, please try this instead. While I am certain it is one of these two, it depends on the symptoms and whether or not they have developed yet. I thought it appropriate to make both, just in case.”

Hisao said neutrally, his expression a little tense if anything. He had double and triple-checked that ingesting both would not have any harmful consequences, besides the potential of nausea, something the man was already suffering from so it was a downside Hisao was willing to take.

"While you sing of death so carelessly, I would prefer it not happen while on my watch if you do not mind, Guré Ren-Sensei”

He added, quietly, his voice moving away from the neutral factual tone he had used before and turning more sour, almost scolding if not for the quiet way in which they were muttered.

”Oh?” Ren perked up at the last comment. He raised a brow and glanced up at Hisao through a clouded gaze. ”I’m a patient right now, twerp. You can’t tell a dying man what to do. Just deal with the situation in front of you without your ego. Otherwise, what kind of a shitty medic do you want to be?” there was no pulling punches. Ren understood the frustration and he was having fun with it a little while, technically, dying but he had not noticed that Hisao was missing something.

The blonde pushed up to his feet and walked forward to look at the kid who only came up to his chin. ”I’m not the only one in this room losing vision. Are you so upset about how I teach that you don’t see the opportunity to practise multiple things at once? I thought this was obvious but I guess I’ll have to spoon feed you how it works in cases like these. You know nothing and the patient is chaotic or unconscious. You already have multiple crutches. I’m being gentle in comparison.” he said as he coughed up some red stomach contents a little.

”That cure will make me blind and the other will enhance my kidney degeneration. Think outside of the box, twerp-kun. Thirty minutes left…” he waved his hand at him and slumped back down on his chair and opened the tap in the sink in front of him. In the meantime he was drinking a lot of water. No more obvious explanations. Hisao was supposed to notice Ren’s dehydration and the effects of perhaps two poisons mixed in one.

Just to mess with him and acting petty because the white haired genin had the audacity to lecture Ren, the blonde opened up in another song - this one jolly in tune:

”Three murderers, three professors,
Around my bed they stand~
Three murderers, three doctorers,
Around my bed they stand~

A babe my mother in my crib,
Says a tailor great to be!
A babe my mother in my crib,
Says a tailor great to be~

When I was once grown up to man,
They send me off to learn!
When I was once grown up to man,
They send me off to learn~

With labour’s scorn and iron hot
The boy is wounded dire!
With labour’s scorn and iron hot
The boy is wounded dire~

Goodbye my love, my heart’s desire,
Goodbye the world I ‘dore!
Goodbye my love, my heart’s desire,
Goodbye the world I ‘dore~”
he sang it like a drunkard song, clearly only doing it to further get under Hisao’s skin. If the kid could take this as a learning opportunity, it would be good for him. Limits were meant to be pushed, after all.

Damh you, it was not about his own ego but about the man’s carelessness! he thought. How Ren could so easily toy with death was beyond Hisao. He had stared death in the face on multiple occasions and he would never willingly want to waltz with it, especially for such low stakes! He bit back a scowl and lowered his head as Ren harshly scolded him. Hisao did learn something from this but perhaps not what Ren might have wanted - Hisao was from here on out going to stay as quiet as he could get away with and if Ren died from this foolishness it would be his own dang fault if he could not cure himself in time..

As Hisao internally promised himself to avoid the man for the rest of his life, his train of thought got cut short as he realised something. What did he mean by practising multiple things at once? And what was that about making him blind, that would only be true if- but he only drank the one vial? It should only cause that effect if mixed with- but that- no.. Oh but what if-

The anger and annoyance left Hisao and a spark of something new took root. Intrigue. He turned sharply and all but jumped back to the books, quickly flicking through one of them. He only looked up again when he heard the sound of water splashing, narrowing his eyes at the man, his eyes calculating as he watched him. Noticing the third glass of water, something clicked behind Hisao’s eyes, like a puzzle piece falling into place. His strict upbringing kept him from loudly smacking his forehead against the table in frustration at his own show of incompetence. While he did not think he deserved quite that harsh of a scolding, Ren had been correct in that Hisao had wrongfully assumed this would have been easy. That a man willing to poison himself wouldn’t also trick him off track.

Hisao ran through his notes again, crossing things out and quickly scribbling in new notes. He seemed frustrated at something. The first antidote one would have led to blindness meaning the side component would have reacted negatively with the toxin, but since the secondary was a similar recipe, he only had to figure out which components were causing which reaction. That was the easy part, but now he had to figure out what was in the toxin.. Or toxins? He almost had it but there was a side effect he couldn’t quite figure out how to combat. If he had realised this from the start maybe he could have through some trial and error or simply have had more time to research but time was running out and quickly. He was spending far too long trying to find a solution before suddenly something clicked. He quickly got up and looked around the room.

Spotting what he searched for he ran to the cabinet, almost flinging it open in his haste and taking a bottle of black pills from within. He brought it over to the lab setup and got to measuring and mixing again, now from the new notes. Blindness, dehydration, nausea- his inner dialogue going over and over with the names of components and their effects. Nearing the end he took two of the small black pills and crushed them, mixing them into the liquid before pouring it into a vial.

There. If this did not work, Hisao wouldn’t know what would and with only minutes to spare from Ren’s estimated thirty minutes, he strode over to the man and held out the vial to him. This time he did not offer to tell him what was in it, the teacher would have to ask before Hisao would dare open his mouth again. Hisao had also carried the notebook over, which contained a detailed list of everything in the vial and the exact measurements thereof. He had managed to ignore the man's singing and comments too far in complete silence and he was going to keep it up if he could, as Ren could not punish him for words he had not uttered after all. Mock him, yes, but could not twist them or use them against him.
